J1 Printing 2, AFA #P1.2, AFA Plate II (second printing) [1902 1 cent Postage Due] NEVER HINGED XF-Superb lower left corner margin 4-block. Printing / Plate confirmed by both color and cliche types (left side type 1, right side type 2) per DuBois (unpublished 1997). [In early philatelic literature, both AFA Plates I and II were described as "Plate I", with a small dot above the I of DIEN.] The perforations are all present and excellent, but many holes are debris-filled as typical for this printing (thus I did not clean out the holes); this is an important point of identification. Blocks of this printing / plate are quite unusual, especially corner margin blocks. I believe that this is the first block of this printing / plate that I have been able to offer in 50 years! This block shows further "flyspeck" varieties for these positions (and possibly these types with further confirmation of consistency across all positions of the types) which could be added to the listing by DuBois. A beautiful example of a scarce multiple and also a philatelically important item. Upon request at time of purchase, the purchaser may receive a draft copy of the 1997 unpublished research paper by DuBois. This is free, but may not be reproduced or distributed in any form whatsoever without my permission. I am the copyright holder.

J1 Printing 4, AFA #P1.4, AFA Plate IIIb (fourth printing) [1902 1 cent Postage Due] NEVER HINGED VF/F-VF vertical 6-block. Printing / Plate confirmed by color and paper. Cliche types (left side type 3, right side type 4) per DuBois (unpublished 1997). [In early philatelic literature, both AFA Plates III/IIIa and III/IV were described as "Plate II", without a small dot above the I of DIEN.] Wonderfully fresh and bright with perfect perforations. Blocks of this printing / plate are quite unusual. Of the Cents postage dues, this printing / plate is one for which no sheet is in the postal museum and a sheet is otherwise not recorded to exist. (Thus blocks are important to determine the location of cliche varieties.) I believe that this is the first block of this printing / plate that I have been able to offer in 50 years! This block shows further "flyspeck" varieties for these positions (and possibly these types with further confirmation of consistency across all positions of the types) which could be added to the listing by DuBois. Specifically, in addition to all six stamps showing small undescribed type differences, the lower right stamp shows a prominent vertical plate scratch from the inner circle above the N of DANSK, down through the outer circle below the OR of PORTO. A beautiful example of a scarce multiple and also a philatelically important item. J1 Printing 3, AFA #P1.3, AFA Plate IIIa (third printing) [1902 1 cent Postage Due] NEVER HINGED XF/VF/F-VF vertical upper right corner margin 10-block. Printing / Plate confirmed by color and paper. This printing exists with a light to dark range of color shades; this example is at the light end of that spectrum. Cliche types (left side type 4, right side type 5) per DuBois (unpublished 1997). [In early philatelic literature, both AFA Plates III/IIIa and III/IV were described as "Plate II", without a small dot above the I of DIEN.] Very fresh and bright appearance, with perfect perforations, however, four stamps show small age spots on the reverse. Blocks of this printing / plate are quite unusual, especially marginal blocks. Of the Cents postage dues, this printing / plate is one for which no sheet is in the postal museum and a sheet is otherwise not recorded to exist. (Thus blocks are important to determine the location of cliche varieties.) I believe that this and three other blocks of this printing / plate are the first that I have been able to offer in 50 years! This block shows further "flyspeck" varieties for these positions (and possibly these types with further confirmation of consistency across all positions of the types) which could be added to the listing by DuBois. Specifically, in addition to all ten stamps showing small undescribed type differences, the plate positions 19 and 20 stamps (second row of this block) shows a prominent "spray" of color dots around the CENTS. A beautiful example of a scarce multiple and also a philatelically important item. This printing exists with a light to dark range of color shades; this example is at the dark end of that spectrum with smooth ink coverage. [In early philatelic literature, both AFA Plates III/IIIa and III/IV were described as "Plate II", without a small dot above the I of DIEN.] Very fresh and bright appearance, with perfect perforations, some separation and bends in the selvage. J1 Printing 3, AFA #P1.3, AFA Plate IIIa (third printing) [1902 1 cent Postage Due] NEVER HINGED F-VF/Fine horizontal bottom margin 14-block. Printing / Plate confirmed by color and paper. This printing exists with a light to dark range of color shades; this example is at the light end of that spectrum. Cliche types (from left to right: 4,5,1,2,3,4,5) per DuBois (unpublished 1997). [In early philatelic literature, both AFA Plates III/IIIa and III/IV were described as "Plate II", without a small dot above the I of DIEN.] Very fresh and bright appearance, though some minor separations and lower right stamp with a spot. Blocks of this printing / plate are quite unusual, especially marginal blocks. Because the denominations were individually added to a 5-strip on an intermediate lithographic stone that was then reproduced to make the full plate/stone -- as demonstrated by the 4 Cent denomination with five vastly different figures of "4" -- 5-strip examples, showing types 1-5, of all the denominations, are very much sought after. 9a [1874 (first printing) 7 cent Lilac and Dark Yellow Bicolor, Perf 14 x 13.5, Normal Frame] Used with typical Average centering, but one shorter perforation tooth and faint corner crease. Neat, light 5-ring-dot cancellation, and faint part of blue transit cancel (usually only seen on covers transiting the French-area mail systems). This example has strong color for this issue. This stamp normally has poor centering, but this is a nice looking example. A very inexpensive example. (Scott 2024 $130.)

There are some slightly blunted perforation tips, but the color is very strong and the cancellation is very light. This stamp was printed on extremely thin paper, thus undamaged examples -- especially of the inverted frame positions an most especially in USED condition -- are quite hard to find. J7 [1905 30 bit Postage Due] (Mint) Uncanceled / Unused with VF+ centering. Either Mint no gum or Used without cancellation. A large percentage of these postage due stamps were used on envelopes containing incoming shipping documents (posted from ships in the harbor to local merchants) and those envelopes were very often not canceled. The stamps are perfectly fine, but cannot really be called Mint or Used. I price such no-gum DWI postage due stamps at a fraction of the (lower) Mint value. If Hint Hinged with gum this centering would be $14 and if Used with proper cancellations it would be $25. Very fresh and attractive.

J8a (Facit #L8C2) [1913 50 bit Postage Due, Perforation 14 x 14.5] NEVER HINGED with Just-Fine centering (the perforations do NOT touch the design), but with the stress crease (not visible from the front) typically seen on this particular issue/printing. 2 Dark Rose [1866 3 cent rose to carmine, Imperforate] Used XF with four full to large margins and almost perfectly centered 5-ring-plus-dot cancellation. While this cancellation was in normal use at all three primary post offices at this time, nice examples, especially so complete and well-centered, are hard to find. Scott #1a, Facit #1b, AFA #1B [1855 3 cent Carmine with YELLOW GUM] Used with VF centering; three full to large margins and one close but clear margin. Extremely lightly canceled with small VIOLET line of a type I have not previously seen. However the yellow gum stamps are known to have more colored cancellations (I had a wonderful blue ring cancellation about ten years ago) than the other gum types. The clean and crisp Carmine color of this stamp is the original gum as they were printed -- you would never know that by looking at a Scott #1 brown gum stamp. This is a #1a: The burelage I/A (lines upper left to lower right) are visible (a 10x magnifier is always needed on these) in the lower left corner. Furthermore, the stamp has VIRTUALLY FULL GUM; it had been adhered to an envelope and was removed without soaking, leaving a very small amount of paper adhered, but mostly full YELLOW gum. An outstanding and unquestionable example of a scarce stamp!

7 [1873 (1878 printing) 4 cent Bicolor, Perf 14 x 13.5, Normal Frame] Mint, very lightly hinged, with XF centering. However, has an inclusion in the gum (in the top margin) that appears to be "natural" in the gum at the time of application. When the stamp is on a light background, from the front you can just barely see the inclusion. However, when the stamp is on a dark background, such as in a black stamp mount, the inclusion is NOT visible from the front. This example has exceptionally nice centering and perforations. Nice looking mint examples of this workhorse stamp are quite hard to find. Very low price for this wonderful appearance; this would otherwise be $38 for this quality.

15 [1895 "10 CENTS 1895" Surcharge on 50 cent Bicolor] Mint, lightly hinged, with F-VF centering, great color, and perfect perforations. It is quite hard to find such nice examples of this stamps which was printed on thin paper and is often found damaged. The locally-applied overprint was printed with a plate of only 50 positions, struck twice on the sheet. There are many variations in the overprint characters from stamp to stamp. This example shows the "1" of 1895 to be bent and without serifs; the "8" is flattened on the left side and looks odd. Examples of this stamp in such attractive and fresh quality are a pleasure to see. Priced as a normal Mint F-VF example.

14b [1887 "1 CENT" surcharge on 7 cent violet and yellow (Print 1) Bicolor] Mint with full original gum, very lightly hinged, with F-VF+ centering. There are faint hints of aging on a couple of perforation tips and a tiny natural inclusion (bit of tree fiber) in the right margin, but most people would consider this to be a VF example. Extraordinary excellent perforations for this Print 1 stamp. Most examples on the market of Scott #14b are damaged and/or without gum; very few are this nice! Because most examples on the market seem to be in sub-standard quality (and many not described as such), I believe that this has led #14b to be undervalued in the catalogs. This is a very nice example of a scarce stamp. Of this printing, Facit says "at most 10,000" examples were printed, but only a small fraction of that have survived in Mint and in such nice quality.

[1876 (1888 Print 6) 10 cent Bicolor, Normal Frame, Perf 14 x 13.5] Mint, without gum as usual, BLOCK OF FOUR with VF-XF centering. Due to seawater leakage damaging the entire Print 6 shipment from Denmark to DWI, Print 6 is rare with original gum (as noted by Facit and in the literature). The only with-gum examples are likely to have come from the Hagemann research holding from the postal archives. The catalog values of this printing are for without-gum examples. This block is from positions 25-26/35-36 (detailed plating information is included). AFA-listed PLATE VARIETY 11w (+DKK 150) in Position 35: Large white spot on lower left foot of R in ØER. Facit 2024 value for singles is SEK 900 and for a normal-centered 4-block SEK 4000 (7/2023 about US$ 400). This example has centering that is tremendously better than usually seen on Print 6 -- and any blocks of Print 6 are scarce. Priced below break-up value!

10 Grayish Blue and Blackish Brown, Print 6. Facit #10f. AFA #11b-6. [1876 (1888 Print 6) 10 cent Bicolor, Normal Frame, Perf 14 x 13.5] Mint with F-VF+ centering, but WITH GUM that is either regummed or disturbed original gum. It is perhaps possible that this is disturbed original gum or locally applied regumming for postal use, but either way, it is not undisturbed original gum. Due to seawater leakage damaging the entire Print 6 shipment from Denmark to DWI, Print 6 is rare with original gum (as noted by Facit and in the literature). The only fully-with-gum examples are likely to have come from the Hagemann research holding from the postal archives. The catalog values of this printing are for without-gum examples. Facit 2024 value for without-gum singles is SEK 900 (7/2023 about $90). This is an unusual case in that even if this example is philatelically regummed, the gum could be soaked off it without diminishing the catalog value. This example has centering that is much nicer than is usually seen on Print 6. Very attractive example.

20 Plate Variety [1901 10 cent Bicolor, Perf 12.75] Mint, extremely lightly hinged, with F-VF+ centering (which most people might call VF). Catalog-listed PLATE VARIETY AFA #11Bv and Facit #18v16 (+ SEK 350): White line extending to the right from the base of E of VEST. Though it does not change the financial value, this also has a WATERMARK VARIETY; the crown watermark is evenly split with 50% of the watermark to the left and to the right. Wonderfully fresh with perfect perforations and bright colors. Such nice examples are hard to find. A key stamp, even without the variety, that is missing from most collections.

27 Plate Variety [1902 2 on 3 cent Bicolor Bold Surcharge, Inverted Frame] Mint, extremely lightly hinged, with F-VF centering. PLATE VARIETY from Position 31 of this printing, but despite being at least as obvious as some of the other varieties, it is not (yet) catalog listed: White hook on the underside of the D of DISKE and white spot to upper left of large 3. This variety is clearly documented in the Lasse Nielsen Bicolor handbook (in Volume 3) as variety OF 9. With only 350 sheets printed with this overprint, only 350 examples of this plate variety originally existed with this overprint. This particular stamp seemed to have been more subject than usual to high losses due to tropical staining, perhaps due to postal storage methods. Thus I suspect that, at most, less than 150-200 examples of this stamp can still exist today; and probably only, at most, half that number in Mint (or NH) condition still exist. Because this variety has not been well-cataloged, the quantity of surviving examples could be much smaller.

9b [1878 7 cent Red Lilac and Orange, Print 2, Bicolor, INVERTED FRAME] Used with Fine centering, but with tiny defects and tiny repairs. Exceptionally strong color -- rarely seen with such nice color. The cancellation, which is sans-serif and shows "...SSTED", is Christianssted (misspelled with SS); the final digit of the year date is 0, probably 1890. This cancellation device was in use from 1888 onward and is quite scarce (Daka 1997 gives it a DKK 400 premium). Because the 7 cent Print 2 stamps did not have a lot of postal uses, they were available in the post offices for quite some period of time, thus an apparent 1890 use is not that unusual. Used examples of this inverted frame stamp are quite hard to find and when found are often defective. This would otherwise be $135. This example is offered at a very low price.

With the correct, neat, light, 5-ring-dot mute cancellation. This stamp issue was printed with extremely narrow margins and very crude perforations, thus the appearance of this is typical. 2 PRIVATELY ROULETTED????? [1866 3 cent Rose, Imperforate?] Mint, without gum, F-VF with three margins, but with internal paper break in the back of the stamp (a lateral tear within the plane of the paper). This example appears to be rouletted, and AFA and DAKA do list two different private roulettes (4.5 and 9.5), but only in Used condition and on cover. Because it would be relatively easy to alter a normal imperforate example to look like a rouletted example, I cannot state definitively that this is a genuine private roulette -- however, I also cannot state that it is a fake roulette. This could be the real thing and if so, it would be quite rare and valuable, especially since Mint examples do not seem to have been recorded. (I obtained it in a group of DWI duplicates, not recognized for what it may be, from a collector who obtained it in a group of stamps also not recognized for what it might be.) This example may not be genuine rouletted stamp, thus it can only be offered AS-IS. Do you feel lucky?

Great Britain Scott #43a 4d Dull Vermillion Plate 7 (1865 issue) F-VF stamp (one short perf) with nicely centered and VF VERTICAL OVAL "C51" cancellation used at St. Thomas (Scott Classic #A13 + plate 7). 18b INVERTED FRAME, Facit #16bv2, AFA 2016 Specialized #7By Print 4, Positions 91-100, Brownish Yellow and Clear Blue [1901 4 Cent Bicolor, Perf 12.75, Inverted Frame, the 1902 second printing of this perforation] Used with Fine centering and neat cancellation. An attractive example with excellent perforations and clearly visible inverted frame. THIS stamp is from the second of the two printings of the Perf 12.75 4-cent stamps (the 4th overall printing of all the 4 cent Bicolors, counting both perforations). Inverted frame stamps exist from both of the Perf 12.75 printings. In the first Perf 12.75 printing, the inverted frame exists ONLY from position 51 and has visible characteristics (in addition to color) that separate it from the position 51 inverted frame stamps that exist in the second Perf 12.75 printing (clear blue center color). THIS STAMP with inverted frame is from the latter printing, from sheet positions 91-100, those being the more "common" (but still quite hard to find) 4 cent inverted frames (and correspond to what Scott lists as #18b). The Facit 2022 value is SEK 1200 for Used. A nice example of a stamp missing from most collections.

J4 Printing 1, Plate I [1902 10 cent blue Postage Due] Used appearance with VF centering and perfect perforations, but I am not able to confirm that the cancellation is correct and proper, thus as a starting point, I have to value this as less than the much lower-priced Mint value. The cancellation may be okay, but I just cannot confirm that. AFA Plates I and II both have the "small dot over I of DIEN"; elsewhere all "small dot" stamps are often described as Plate I). Only 10,000 of the 50,000 10 Cent stamps are from Printing 1, but the modest difference in the catalog values of the different printings do not properly represent this scarcity. Attractive and genuine stamp (with questionable cancellation) offered at a very low price.

J8a [1915 50 bit Postage Due, Perforation 14 x 14.25] February 1916 printing with small perforation holes. Mint, lightly hinged, with F-VF+ centering. This is a seldom-offered stamp in any condition or centering, however, this is unusually nice centering for this scarce stamp. This one is missing from most collections. [ Additional background information: Though for all to see there are details on this stamp in "DWI Mails" Volume 2, and a listing in the 2016 AFA Specialized Catalog, "virtually nobody" seems to be aware that the stamp with this perforation had two printings: March 1915 VS February 1916. The information in "DWI Mails" dates from 1981 but is fairly extensive, while the 2016 AFA Specialized may (?) be more up-to-date, but lacks detail and context. AFA mentions the perforation hole size are large vs small, while "DWI Mails" states that the March 1915 printing "has slightly larger holes than [the next] printing because the perforating was done by a new machine put in use in 1913. Only "DWI Mails" mentions the shipwreck damaging the March 1915 stamps. Both mention the colors under daylight, but with somewhat different color naming ("DWI Mails" color names given below). Only "DWI Mails" mentions the gum characteristics or the colors under UV light. The sum of the information appears to be: March 1915 Printing 3 (of all 50 bit stamps); light yellowish-gray (under UV: light violet-gray) and deep orange-red. Crackly white gum with larger perforation holes. 5,000 printed, but the ship "ran aground badly water-damaging the stamps". Of those 50 (mostly?) damaged sheets of stamps, 20 sheets are in the Danish postal archives "wrinkled and without gum from the mentioned water damage". That leaves no more than 3,000 of the March 1915 printing, but "It is not known how many ... were used at DWI or discarded ... but they must be considered rare, especially if they still have their original crackly white gum." February 1916 Printing 4 (of all 50 bit stamps); medium gray and medium orange-red (under UV: dark gray-violet center and strong red-lilac frame). Smooth yellowish gum with smaller perforation holes. (In my experience, the perforation hole size may NOT always be the best identifier.) 15,000 printed. "DWI Mails" states that in 1957 3,000 50 bit stamps were destroyed by burning [by the Danish authorities], but apparently it is not known from which printing(s) those stamps came. Because the third and fourth printings appear to have been made out of necessity because apparently the earlier printings had been consumed, it would be a reasonable assumption that excess stamps remained only from the fourth (February 1916) printing, thus lowering that issue quantity to a net of 12,000. I have never seen a collection that contained both printings, or that even mentioned that there were two printings! The March 1915 printing is "rarely" offered (and should be expertized). I have only recorded having a single example and it is certainly tremendously scarcer than the one-quarter of the issue quantity which AFA states -- I suspect that no more than a couple or few hundred examples survived. The information in Facit is very limited: Facit does not list any of the printings on the 1905-1916 postage dues, they give an issue date for this stamp as 1913, and they state a total quantity of 15,400. I have suggested to Facit that they take a closer look at this whole 1905-1916 postage due issue.]

This third and final printing (Plate III) of the 10 cent is Blue on White Paper, without that "small dot". However, this example has a remarkable variety which I have not previously seen: a very large color spot above/between DI. This is certainly only from one position in the sheet of 100. This first printing (Plate I) is Dark Indigo Blue on Bright White Paper. (The second printing of this stamp, AFA Plate II, also with the dot, is Dark Grayish Blue on paper that is usually cream or grayish.) Most use of these stamps was on the back of envelopes, without cancellation; canceled examples are much scarcer than uncanceled (no gum). Only 10,000 of the 70,300 1 Cent stamps are from Printing 1, but the catalog values do not properly represent the scarcity. Furthermore, the catalog values do not properly reflect the value of ordinary postmarked examples ... the ST. JAN cancel is VERY scarce. Such attractive examples are hard to find.

Great Britain Scott #55a (SG #120) [1867 2s PALE BLUE Plate 1] F-VF stamp with VF vertical barred-oval "C51" cancellation used abroad at St. Thomas (Danish West Indies), on small piece. The postmark is bold and virtually complete. The stamp has wonderful color, excellent perforations, and normal centering for this issue. The Scott Classic listing for this cancellation only shows the cancel on #55 (blue instead of this pale blue). The 2 shilling is very scarce used at St. Thomas; this is the first 2 shilling I have recorded having in 48 years -- and it is even scarcer with the pale blue color. The Scott Classic 2022 pricing has an error because the Used Abroad at St. Thomas price (in the DWI listings) of #55 used at DWI is $150 whereas the basic Used price for this stamp in the GB listings is $200 for #55 blue (and $240 for this #55a pale blue). [I have reported this problem and similar problems to Scott; they need to have a better procedure to keep these Used Abroad prices in sync with the normal stamp prices.] A more appropriate Scott value for a regular #55 blue with C51 cancellation would be $260 and the much scarcer #55a pale blue at $300. Note that Scott specifically states that their values for these stamps are for F-VF centering. Provenance: From the J.A. Farrington collection.

Wonderfully fresh appearance with great color and excellent perforations. Examples, with or without gum, with such nice color are hard to find. Scott #5e Print 9, Facit #5i, AFA 5.9 Yellow Green and Red Brown on "Thick" Paper [1873 (1895 printing) 1 cent Bicolor, Perf 14 x 13.5, INVERTED FRAME] Mint, very lightly hinged, with Superb centering. Wonderfully fresh appearance with great color and excellent perforations. Such well-centered and lightly hinged examples are seldom available and are much harder to find than the catalog values suggest. All but one position (91) of the Print 9 sheet are Inverted Frames. The only normally-produced inverted frame stamps are the Print 7 stamps (all positions of which have inverted frames).

14b [1887 "1 CENT" surcharge on 7 cent violet and yellow (Print 1) Bicolor] Mint with full original gum, but hinge remnant, with F-VF centering. Excellent perforations for this Print 1 stamp. NO defects -- most examples of Scott #14b are damaged and/or without gum. Because most examples on the market seem to be in sub-standard quality (and many not described as such), I believe that this has led #14b to be undervalued in the catalogs. This is a very nice example of a scarce stamp. Of this printing, Facit says "at most 10,000" examples were printed.

18, Facit 16a, Yellow-Brown and Greenish Blue [1901 4 Cent Bicolor, Perf 12.75, Normal Frame] Used horizontal PAIR with VF centering (right stamp with rounded corner perf) and nearly complete CHRISTIANSTED 6 July 1905 cancellation. On small piece with left stamp "marked off" by red crayon. This type of marking-off is usually seen when an invalid stamp has been used (such as an obsolete / demonetized stamp, foreign stamp, charity label, or a re-used stamp). In this case, the stamps were valid postage -- I can only guess that the marked-off stamp was considered excess (overpaid) and the postal clerk was "preserving" it for future use by marking it off. I do not recall previously seeing this type of situation from DWI or any country [I welcome further information]. Very attractive and interesting!

1a [1856 3 cent Dark Carmine with Yellow Gum] Used VF (4 margins, close but clear at lower left) with virtually all of full yellow gum still intact. A very nice example, with none of the typical discoloration. (Keep in mind that the #1a yellow gum and #1 brown gum were official regumming because the original shipment #1b with white gum was damaged by sea water. Some minor discoloration is typical and expected.) That this example has virtually full gum is a little unusual, but it was properly used -- the gum did not stick very well if not heavily moistened, so stamps fairly easily popped off the envelope. Very fresh and bright example with light cancellation. Facit 2020 value SEK 3800 or about $495 (5/2021).
