Poultry Exhibitions 1906-1928 "Complete" Collection of normal issues, plus imperforates, part-perforates, and proofs. A total of 31 items. These unusual-looking advertising labels (poster stamps) titled "Fjerkræ Udstilling" (Poultry Exhibition) were issued annually starting in 1906 and running through 1928, except there are no known issues for 1918 (due to WWI) and 1925 (for reasons unknown to me). In 1919 instead issuing a "new" label, the 1917 label was overprinted; three overprint styles exist -- two are included in this collection, the third is "rare"). The best documentation of these that I am aware of is here on the Denmark Cinderellas website. A comparison shows that this collection includes single examples of virtually all the items shown on that website. The condition in this group is Mint, with most NH (the imperforates and proofs usually only exist without gum). A couple are in lesser quality, but they are in the "very scarce" category. These issues show the same pattern that is often seen in early poster stamps: the earlier issues tend to be more easily found than the later issues. While this is a terrific and virtually complete collection, there is still plenty of room to further build this collection. You can work on expanding it by adding more imperforates / proofs, blocks, printing varieties, perforation varieties, paper varieties, a wide range of colors/shades (for some years), as well as finding examples that were applied on covers. While these some of the items in this collection are (only) in the "unusual" category, some do range all the way up to "very scarce". That being said, I suspect that 99.5% of Danish stamp collectors -- even those in Denmark -- have never seen a single example of any of these handsome roosters! Prior to this collection, in 50 years, I had only had perhaps one or two example each of only four or five of these items; and had never in-person seen any of the others! As a collection, this is priced at a fraction of the total of their individual prices!

330-1 [1951 set 100th Anniversary of First Danish Stamps] Used VF set on 1 April 1951 FIRST DAY COVER for this issue, plus franked with Scott #327-8 [1951 set Naval Officers Academy] to the U.S., with "KØBENHAVN LUFTPOST" (airplane pictorial) airmail cancellations. At the same time, this is a First Mail Carrying Danish Helicopter Post cover with red post office handstamped postmark. While generic examples of the Helicopter cover are not scarce, this is the first I can recall having with this airmail cancellation, and with additional stamps, and send to another country. A fun item!

Scott #382, 384, 387 FLUORESCENT; AFA #413F, 414F, 415F [16 April 1963 15 øre Wavy-Lines, 25 øre brown and 35 øre red King Frederik IX; fluorescent paper] (VF) on cacheted FDC canceled at ÅRHUS. This definitive issue did not have an official FD release or special cancellation. Only careful observers were able to make FDCs! This date is listed as the first day by AFA in their "unofficial first day cover" listing. Generic cachet (since there was no time to prepare special cachets) with lightly pencilled address (such covers are very scarce in unaddressed condition). Fairly scarce!

Scott #26 COLOR PROOF Gray and Ultramarine [1875 4 øre Bicolor, Normal Frame]. VF centering and wonderful quality, with full margins as printed. Color proof on stamp-like paper, but imperforate and without watermark or gum (all these color proofs were ungummed). Accompanied by a Lasse Nielsen (the acknowledged premier expert on the Bicolors) 1987 color photo certificate which translates to "Proof print of 4 øre ultramarine / gray with normal frame, in same color shade as was used for the first printing of the 4 øre. Without watermark. Imperforate and without gum. Genuine and without repairs. A very good example." This is not a "plate" proof because the top and bottom margins are huge, demonstrating that this was not printed as part of a normal sheet. AFA Specialized Catalog 2016 [most recent edition] #P23Aa/b [AFA does not explain their intended difference between a and b]. P23A proofs were printed in a horizontal strip of 10; the left-most stamp with Frame Type 2 with Matrix Flaw 2B, and the other nine stamps with Frame Type 3. Frame Types 2 and 3 can be hard to distinguish (depending upon the impression strength); Nielsen did not state which this is. This does not have Matrix Flaw 2B, thus is Frame Type 3. The AFA Specialized 2016 [most recent] value is DKK 3000 (4/2024 about $450). These early proofs are much scarcer than even that catalog value suggests. An outstanding example that would be an important addition to a collection of the early øre Bicolors. From the J.A. Farrington collection.

1968 Slania-engraved Grundtvig Cathedral test stamp. "Normal" color combination: Light Green Tree, Brown Cathedral, Blue Sky. Non-Fluorescent Paper. NH VF / F-VF FULL SHEET with plate number "F 312" at top and "H 224" at bottom. The centering always varies in these stamps; it can be seen from this sheet that the positioning of the perforation rows and columns does not quite correspond to the spacing of the stamp designs on the printing plate. [I do not know the reason for the two different plate numbers on the same sheet unless the reason is that the "F" number was intentionally included and that the "H" number was simply left in place from a previous printing plate set-up. "H" numbers were traditionally used for printing special-format booklet-making sheets and were not normally seen by the public. "F" could be the abbreviation for "Forsøg" (verb: test; noun: try, trial, attempt, experiment).] Full sheets of Danish test stamps are rarely seen and to my knowledge they were not normally released or sold in sheets. An important item for a Slania-engraved collection or a Danish test stamp collection. Individual examples of this stamp sell for $26 EACH (thus $1300 for 50 stamps!). This is priced very low due to its esoteric nature, but it is much more rare than my price suggests. This is only the second example of such a sheet that I have been able to offer in 50 years!

ESSAYS: Set of two ca.1912 Alfred Jacobsen color prints of the 1902 Harald Slott-Møller essays for new 5 øre Danish definitive stamps. Printed by Jacobsen only in Carmine and in Dark Ultramarine on white, coated paper, without watermark or gum. Listed by Benfield and Nørdam in Volume 1, on pages 271-272 (2016 edition), with catalog numbers: Red "{[*1902C-E(03a)]-WPP(1b)}-R(13a)" and "Blue" (Dark Ultramarine) "{[*1902C-E(03a)]-WPP(1b)}-R(13b)" (with author apologies for the strange numbering because they are "reprints of a working plate proof of an essay"). To the best of my knowledge, Benfield and Nørdam are the only authors to have properly shown the origin of this set of essays, but in a handbook that has had extremely little distribution. This set is quite scarce; I believe I have only previously had one other set in 50 years. NH Superb examples.

1958 "Butterflies" 25 øre ULTRAMARINE Ferie (Vacation) Savings Stamp. NEVER HINGED BLOCK OF FOUR with VF centering. The upper left stamp has a bend and the lower right stamp has some blunted perforations. However, the other two stamps are VF-XF or XF! This design is sought by topical collectors. As of 26 December 2023, in 50 years I had only recorded having 10 single examples (1 NH VF, 1 NH F-VF, 1 Mint VF, 2 Mint F-VF, and 5 Mint with small faults) and this 4-block of this 25 øre stamp. In my experience, blocks of any of the Ferie stamps are at least "very scarce". This is the only example of ANY Ferie stamp that I have been able to offer in a block in 50 years! Priced at only the break-up value of the four stamps, taking into account the two stamps with small problems. An outstanding item that would be a highlight of a Butterfly stamp collection or a Danish Ferie stamp collection.

1976 "HAFNIA 76" Czeslaw SLANIA "signing card" souvenir card. The outside of the folded card bears only, on the front, the "HAFNIA 76 / DANMARK" stamp show logo. The left inside panel has a picture of Slania engraving the 1976 Postal Horses souvenir sheet of the design related to this item; SLANIA HAS HAND-SIGNED BELOW THE PICTURE. The right inside panel has placement marks indicating that the aforementioned souvenir sheet was expected to be affixed. Instead, the single regular sheet stamp of same issue [Scott #590] has been affixed and canceled with the daily show cancellation for 27 August 1976, picturing a butterfly (relating to topical stamp collecting). This is the only example of this item (in any form) that I have seen in 50 years. While it was surely obtained by many collectors who observed Slania doing demonstrations at the stamp show, if I have not previously seen another example -- and I have purchased extensive collections of Hafnia 76 souvenirs -- it must be "fairly scarce".

(Aalborg) Dansk Circular Ekspedition DAKA (1996) #7. An extremely scarce local post stamp. Neither this post nor this stamp were mentioned by Christensen and Ringstrom; it has only been listed in the DAKA 1996 Danish Locals Catalog. This stamp has both a very unusual purpose and format. It is perforated 13 all around and is quite large for a stamp at 130 x 73 mm. #7 has the denomination area on the left (and #6 on the right). This seems to have been a cooperative venture between the local post and an organization for Aalborg school teachers -- it is not clear to me if the teachers sold the stamps/service and/or if the teachers actually delivered the letters. This is the only example I have had in 50 years and I do not recall seeing mention of it in any of the philatelic literature. Daka was not even able to illustrate an example. I believe that the Daka price of DKK 800 (in 1999) was a "dealer buying price", not a selling price -- the owner of Daka seemed to have a habit of pricing low scarce items he wanted to buy. By the way, the word "ekspedition" or "expedition" in this context refers to expediting -- as in fast delivery -- not taking a trip. The frame and main text are printed in black on a light grayish-green background pattern. The postage "shield" at left has red details. Printed diagonally across the stamp, from lower left to upper right, is "hand script" text in brown "Annülllert Prøvmarke." (canceled proof) -- I believe that this represents what we would today describe as a "specimen" that the teachers were to use to demonstrate and sell the service. All elements are lithographed (offset printed), with printer imprint at bottom right: "N.C. Roms Bog- & Stentrykkeri. Kiobenhavn." (N.C. Roms Book and Lithographic Printing. København). The text reads "OMDELES VED LÆRERE TIL FORDEL FOR LÆRERENKER." (Distributed by teachers in favor or teacher ranks.) "ENEFORHANDLER: DANSK CIRKULÆREEKSPEDITION, AALBORG." (Exclusive dealer: Danish Circular Expediting, Aalborg.) "Autoriseret af DANMARKS LÆRERFORENINGS Bestyrelse." (Authorized by the Danish Teachers Association Board of Directors.) This example has no gum and looks like it may never have been gummed, but I cannot be sure. Wonderful quality. If I have not previously seen an example of something like this in 50 years, it is SCARCE!

Boom #3.122L Type I, Facit #H39 Variety, AFA #2kr-32 Variety NEVER FOLDED BOOKLET COVER PRINTING ERROR. Almost all Danish booklets have an "edition" number (the equivalent of a plate number for booklet covers) printed on the booklet cover. This 1963 booklet cover was supposed to be printed with "H 122 L", however it was accidentally printed as "H 121 L". To correct this, rather than discard the covers, the second "1" was overprinted with a "2". (Then more covers were correctly printed with "122".) This is an unfolded booklet cover -- never made into a booklet. In perfect condition (NH XF). Complete, fully made, booklets do exist both ways, but the overprinted version is very hard to find. To the best of my knowledge, this is the only example of a Danish printing error of this nature. Also, I cannot recall ever seeing or having any other Danish booklet covers that were unfolded / never made into booklets. The Boom "Denmark Stamp Booklets Catalogue" (final edition/printing 1977 -- quite hard to find) does list the complete and fully-made booklets, but NO catalog or reference (that I have seen) mentions or lists this UNFOLDED booklet cover that was never made into a booklet. A wonderful and extremely scarce item to accent a Danish / booklet collection!

Boom #1.7 VARIETY 2, Facit #H6 variety, AFA #HD1y variety, MOUNTED BY TOP MARGINS (UPRIGHT) [1929 semi-postal Cancer; contains panes Scott #B3a 2x VF/F-VF; B4a x2 VF/F-VF; B5a XF-Superb] NH VF complete booklet in excellent quality. As usual, the gum of the panes is slightly aged from being against the interleaving, but that is completely typical. Interestingly, neither AFA nor Facit list even mention that this booklet exists mounted by top vs bottom margins; while the quantities produced were probably about equal (and Boom prices them equally), in my experience, the type mounted by bottom margins is less often seen. The blue 25 øre pane includes the AFA-listed plate variety "white spot in bend of snake" (AFA #180y; as a single NH stamp AFA value is DKK 900!). Both Boom and AFA list and price the booklet with this plate variety; AFA Specialized 2016 (most recent edition) DKK 2000 (approx US$300 6/2023). [Both the AFA #180x and #180y plate varieties exist only in the top row of the sheet, in positions 4 and 6 respectively, thus in booklets is only found in top-margin-mounted booklets.] An attractive example with the gold on dark red leather-like cover -- certainly an unusual production for a stamp booklet in 1929! Excellent with wonderful centering of the scarcest pane -- that also includes the variety!

3-6 [2, 4, 8, 16 1854-57 Dotted Spandrels] The complete set of four official reprints of the Dotted Spandrel designs. The 2 sk and 16 sk are the 1885 reprints (the only reprints made of these two stamps) and the 4 sk and 8 sk are the VERY SCARCE 1924 reprints (again, the only reprints of these two stamps). The 2 sk and 16 sk were issued without gum; these two examples have been privately gummed. The 4 sk and 8 sk were issued gummed; these are original gum examples. The 1924 4 sk and 8 sk reprints are remarkably scarce, especially still with gum; they are seldom offered in any condition. Mint VF hinged. The stamps are neatly and correctly mounted in black split-back mounts. Classic treatment, mounted on beautiful hand-lettered piece of album page from the Paul and Irene Carlton collection. The Carltons stated that the reprints were from the famous Hans Lagerloef collection. I purchased the Carlton collection; I sold this set to Holcomb and I have now purchased the Holcomb collection. Stunning!

1985 Slania-engraved Horse Statue test stamp. JSA #"1985-B" NEW DISCOVERY as of August 2021 -- ONLY THE SECOND FULL-COLOR VARIATION (different from the issued stamp) OF THE 1985 DESIGN / PRINTING THAT I HAVE RECORDED. After the 1980 printings, the die and plate were apparently lost or destroyed, thus a completely new engraving had to be made. There are many design differences between the original 1980 engraving and the 1985 engraving; this is the 1985 engraving. This previously unrecorded variety is probably a "real" test stamp, that was actually used for testing, from the 1985 engraving (it is different from the large quantity specially printed for distribution to collectors). Initially, it appears similar to both the previously known "1985-A" variety and the issued 1985 stamp. As with the "1985-A" variety, the colors are less vibrant, with much lighter yellow, but on "1985-B" the "PRØVE" is printed in blue, magenta, and yellow (not only blue as on "1985-A"). This variety is printed on off-white paper (as is "1985-A"), BUT WITH BLUISH-WHITE FLUORESCENCE (instead of either the bright yellowish-white fluorescence of "1985-A" or the bright white paper with very strong dark yellow fluorescence of the issued stamp). As with the issued 1985 stamps and all known 1985 variations, the "PRØVE" is NOT engraved. This is only the second full-color 1985 variation that I have recorded with a paper or color difference. I first discovered this variation in August 2021, 36 years after the stamps were printed. This stamp is RARE; I have only recorded two examples. (More examples may yet be discovered.) This example was found in a small group of stamps that I am told came directly from a family member of a retired employee of the printing press manufacturer. NH VF single. I cannot overemphasize the importance of this stamp; this variation of the 1985 engraving was not discovered until 36 years after it was printed!

1985 Slania-engraved Horse Statue test stamp. ENGRAVED ONLY, IN BLACK. JSA #"1985-Z" NEW DISCOVERY as of August 2021 -- THE FIRST AND ONLY SINGLE-COLOR, ENGRAVED-PRINTING-ONLY VERSION OF THE 1985 DESIGN / PRINTING THAT I HAVE RECORDED. While single-color and multiple-color engraved-only versions of the 1980 design are known and available, this is the first and only example of such a 1985 design stamp that I have ever seen or heard of. This variety is printed on off-white paper (as are the other 1985 varieties other than the issued stamp), but WITH BLUISH-WHITE FLUORESCENCE (as has the "1985-B" variety, but unlike either the bright yellowish-white fluorescence of "1985-A" variety or the bright white paper with very strong dark yellow fluorescence of the issued stamp). The "PRØVE" text is not present because it was not part of the engraved portion of the 1985 design. I discovered this example in August 2021, 36 years after the stamps were printed. This stamp is RARE; I have only recorded two examples. (More examples may yet be discovered.) This example was found in a small group of stamps that I am told came directly from a family member of a retired employee of the printing press manufacturer. NH VF single. 1985 Slania-engraved Horse Statue test stamp. COMPLETE DESIGN OFFSET-PRINTED ONLY (INCLUDING THE USUALLY-ENGRAVED PORTIONS). JSA #"1985-offset-A". A SPECTACULAR AND COMPLETELY UNEXPECTED NEW DISCOVERY as of August 2021 -- THE FIRST AND ONLY EXAMPLE OF THE COMPLETE 1985 DESIGN / PRINTING, PRINTED ONLY BY OFFSET / LITHOGRAPHY, THAT I HAVE RECORDED. After the 1980 printings, the die and plate were apparently lost or destroyed, thus a completely new engraving had to be made. There are many design differences between the original 1980 engraving and the 1985 engraving, both had major parts of the design engraved. This example has offset printing of the colored areas as usual for the 1985 design, but the black portions (frame line, many parts of the design, the date, and the Slania name) have also all been printed in black by offset press (lithography), without half-toning. Examination under high magnification indicates that an offset (lithographic) plate was made from by photographing an engraved-printed (i.e. "recess" printed) impression of only the engraved portions of the design. This might explain the existence of black-only (other colors exist as well) engraved-only-portions versions of the stamp. Extremely small design details from the engraved version are faithfully represented in this offset-printed version. The rest of the usual colored offset-printed areas of the design are printed as normal, using the full CMY(K) half-tone process (with only cyan [blue], magenta, yellow, and NOT K/black because the black is printed by a non-halftone plate, as normal, but normally an engraved plate). The colors of this stamp are more muted than the issued stamp, less green and blue, with more yellowish-green areas. This type of printing is very complex and required the use of an engraved-portions-only die print to create the offset-press black plate. This is NOT a "reproduction" and it is certainly not a forgery. This is a very real test of what the stamp would have actually looked like if it was entirely printed by offset press (which would have been cheaper than if the black plate was engraved). All these tests were carried out by the manufacturer of the printing press and thus they would have wanted to show the post office what level of quality could be produced by starting with an engraved die, using a print from the engraved die as the image source for an offset-printed stamp. The result of this test is quite good, but the black printing is not as fine, crisp, delicate, or dark as the normal engraved versions. This is a previously unrecorded type of very "real" test stamp, that was actually used for testing, from the 1985 engraving. This version is printed on off-white paper (as are the other 1985 varieties, other than the issued stamp), but WITH BLUISH-WHITE FLUORESCENCE (as has the "1985-B" variety, but unlike either the bright yellowish-white fluorescence of the "1985-A" variety or the bright white paper with very strong dark yellow fluorescence of the issued stamp). I discovered this example in August 2021, 36 years after the stamps were printed. This stamp is RARE; I have only recorded a single example. (More examples may yet be discovered.) This example was found in a small group of stamps that I am told came directly from a family member of a retired employee of the printing press manufacturer. NH VF single. I cannot overemphasize the importance of this stamp -- a completely new type or version of this famous test stamp! [Price Protection Guarantee: If more examples of this variety are discovered and if thus my price for similar examples declines to the level of other major varieties that I offer, I will refund the difference in price upon request. 1980 Slania-engraved Horse Statue test stamp. JSA Color "W": BLACK COMPLETE ENGRAVED DESIGN, including in the PRØVE, WITHOUT ANY OFFSET-PRINTED COLOR. THE ORIGINAL ENGRAVING with much greater detail and "PRØVE" engraved. This is a completely different Slania engraving from the commonly seen 1985 DFF multi-colored printing. Distinctly cream-colored paper with white fluorescence, invisible gum. This elegant engraving is apparently RARE with only 2 examples with this color on any paper recorded by me (as of 30 April 2022). NH XF centered single. Very dramatic appearance. Danish 1921 official national Christmas Seal. Design with GREENLAND THEME: Greenlandic Girl in traditional clothing, against snowy mountain background, Greenland POLAR BEAR coat of arms, Danish three lions coat of arms. FULL SHEET of 50 in wonderful quality. The sheet is extremely fresh and bright, with strong perforations without any separations and has never been folded. The gum is perfect except for four hinge marks, two in the top margin (selvage) and two on seals in the bottom row. (I have never seen a completely NH example of this sheet.) In the bottom margin (selvage) at the right, three of the selvage tabs have some excess adhesive on their fronts, likely from the production process -- most people would not notice it if it were not pointed out. The centering is generally F-VF (which very typical for the 1921 seals), however there are 17 seals that are VF or better, with a few in the XF or Superb range. This is the only example of a full sheet of the 1921 seal that I have actually recorded having in the last 48 years, but I have a vague memory of having one or two other examples back in the 1970s. Also, quite notably, while I have quantity stock of most 1910s-1920s seals, I have no backup stock of this year and when I purchased the remains of the huge A.E. Pade (famous Danish stamp dealer who moved his business to the U.S. in the 1930s) Christmas Seal stock back in the 1970s, there were virtually no examples of this year in his stock. I do not know if this year was printed in panes of 50 or if it was printed in larger sheets that were divided into panes of 50. However, due to the printing method (typography) and the method of production, tiny (flyspeck) differences can be found for most or all positions... thus this sheet (pane) could be used as the basis of plating this issue if one were so inclined. A "rare" and beautiful item that would be very important for a Danish Christmas Seal collection and a crowning piece for a Greenlandic Christmas Seal collection. The AFA 2021 catalog value for a NH perfect sheet is DKK 4500 (about US$675 [4/2022]). That value seems quite low to me considering the rarity! AFA also gives a value of DKK 2000 for a sheet that has been folded and/or with separations and/or hinged, etc. The break-up value of this sheet is over $500. This is much, much nicer than that! It is not often that I can offer such a beautiful item!

1980 Slania-engraved Horse Statue test stamp. JSA Color "AF". Engraved-only including all engraved design elements except the building at right is albino: all in brown except horse and tops of three items in dark green; building at right is impressed, but without inking. The paper is white with white fluorescence. NH with F-VF centering, but with pre-printing diagonal (like a lightning bolt) paper fold. This is the first example of any of this test stamp design that I have seen with a pre-printing paper fold. (On an inexpensive stamp, such a pre-printing paper fold would increase the value, but in this case, I feel it reduces the price. This would otherwise be $325 due to its rarity.) This example, offered to me in November 2021, is one of only two examples of this color combination that I have recorded; the other example is part of a progressive color set. This is the ORIGINAL 1980 ENGRAVING with much greater detail and with "PRØVE" engraved. This is the only example of this unusual stamp club souvenir card that I have recorded having in 48 years. Likewise, it is the only example of the marginal-imprinted stamp that I can recall seeing. This booklet contains panes of Scott #B6-8, with accompanying one-each per pane 223a (two 223d panes), 229 (one 229b pane), and 238A Small Pearls (one 238Al pane). This is the only source for Scott #223a (the Gray Green 5 øre Numeral stamp). Just the in-demand two #223a and the one #238 Small Pearls stamps have a total actual selling price of $175! The 2021 AFA value for the booklet is DKK 1700 = about US$270 (12/2021). This booklets is often "well handled" but this example is very fresh. The panes in this example are all VF or better.

A SPECTACULAR AND COMPLETELY UNEXPECTED NEW DISCOVERY made in August 2021 -- THE FIRST AND ONLY VERSION OF THE COMPLETE 1985 DESIGN / PRINTING, PRINTED ONLY BY OFFSET / LITHOGRAPHY, THAT I HAVE RECORDED. This stamp is RARE; I have only recorded two examples. (More examples may yet be discovered.) This example was found in a small group of stamps that I am told came directly from a family member of a retired employee of the printing press manufacturer. NH VF single. Guarantee valid for the lifetime of Jay Smith.]

1980 Slania-engraved Horse Statue test stamp PROGRESSIVE COLOR PROOF SET OF 9 showing progression of adding the elements / colors. This elegant set is apparently VERY RARE; except for one additional example each of two singles (AG and AI), the individual items in this set are the ONLY EXAMPLES I HAVE RECORDED, thus this set is the only set one recorded by me (as of 8 August 2021). I have not seen or heard of any other even remotely similar types of sets. This is the only progressive set of any type of these Slania-engraved test stamps that I have recorded that includes more than two or three members. For completeness of documentation and in case any singles from this set are later found, I have assigned them JSA Colors "AA" through "AI", as follows... All are engraved-only except for AH and thus AI. AA: dark green horse and tops of 3 items. AB: red violet building at right. AC: AA + AB. AD: brown, without inking of features in AA and AB, with uninked gap at right for building. AE: AD + AB. AF: AD + AA. AG: AF + AB. AH: offset printing only, orangish brown, tree tops and monument base, but does not have clouds (which are on the issued stamp). AI: AG + AH. The paper is white with white fluorescence. All engraved elements are present, but if not inked, they are present in albino form. AA-AC are all centered very low. NH VF set of 9. This is a major new discovery; I have not seen anything like this for any Scandinavian test stamp or any Slania-engraved test stamp. Except for one additional example each of AG and AI, only one example of each single item is known to me, thus only this one set, is known to me. (Progressive color proofs are known for Slania-engraved Monaco postage stamps.) THE ORIGINAL 1980 ENGRAVING with much greater detail and with "PRØVE" engraved. This is a completely different Slania engraving from the commonly seen 1985 DFF multi-colored printing. An extraordinary showpiece! (Newly discovered individual examples of varieties the 1980 test stamp of which only one or two examples are recorded by me have been priced -- and have quickly sold -- at $325. On that basis, the price of this set of nine would thus total $2925.)

1980 Slania-engraved Horse Statue test stamp. JSA Color "X": Yellow and Magenta OFFSET-PRINTED COLORS ONLY, including the PRØVE. No engraved areas present. From the original color trial and progressive proofing process. No such offset-only examples are recorded from the from the later 1985 DFF multi-colored printing. White, white fluorescent paper, with invisible gum. This stamp is RARE; I have only recorded THIS SINGLE EXAMPLE, which I am told came from the estate of one of the employees of the printing press manufacturer. NH VF single. Very dramatic appearance.
Danish 1923 official national Christmas Seal. Design with Faroe theme: Faroese provincial coat of arms at the time; scene of 10 rowers rowing an ocean-going rowboat by the name of THORSHAVN, with background of dramatic islands. The rowboat appears to represent the boats that were used for the "skyds system" of mail delivery and transportation of governmental and church officials. Used F-VF+ with partial cancellation that starts with "TH...". The appearance is right for the cancel to be THORSHAVN in the Faroes, but I am not able to positively prove that, thus I have to assume it is a normal Danish town cancel.

1968 "DANIA 68" stamp show souvenir card reproducing four essays (unapproved stamp designs) for modern Danish stamp issues, against a background image of the early København central city (celebrating 800th anniversary of the city founding). The show was "under the protection of" Prince Henrik; the card bears his silhouette image and a blue facsimile of his signature at upper left. According to text printed on the back of card, the essays were designed by the Danish stamp designer, then at the United Nations, Olav S. Mathiesen; his signature usually appears at the bottom. Though I have never seen them listed or cataloged anywhere, there are multiple versions of the card: 1) The Mathiesen signature may be a printed facsimile in blue (thin lines); or may be hand-signed (thicker lines), in at least two styles; or perhaps (?) signature not present at all, though the text on the back of the card states that all cards are "signed by hand by the artist himself" (certainly not always true). 2) The card exists without serial number; or with serial number in blue (I have seen a picture, but have not had in 46 years); or with serial number in green (seems to be scarce); or with serial number in black; or with serial number in red (probably very scarce; I have only seen one in 46 years). All numbered examples I have seen have the number in the lower left corner. The only unnumbered examples that I have recorded all also have the Mathiesen printed facsimile signature. In my experience, all versions are surprisingly hard to find. This card version is with Mathiesen printed facsimile signature and without a serial number.

1976 (?) Souvenir Card reproducing the classic essay portrait of Frederick VII, originally engraved by M.W. Ferslew ca.1850 as a partial design proposal for the first Danish stamp issue. Printed by typography in blue on thin, watermarked paper, by the modern-day Ferslew firm. I suspect that this was created for distribution at or in conjunction with the Hafnia 1976 stamp show (because it was found among other Hafnia 76 items). However, this is the only example I have seen in 46 years and I do not have any supporting documentation or references; my Internet searches have not found any images of this particular item. 1957 NH VF-XF with top and side margins -- the stamp margins of this example are huge. As of May 2020, I have recorded having only 10 examples, 8 from the same block, and regardless of condition / quality, in 46 years. Despite the strong showing of examples at this moment, this is an extremely scarce item! 1957 was the final year issued.

Essay designs for the issue that became Scott #371-3 [1960 Danish Agriculture] by artist Dan Sterup-Hansen, the third place winner in the competition for this stamp issue. The original artwork and large photographic models are only known to exist in the postal museum. The printed essay designs, all 30 øre, are only known to exist each in these single colors, on white ungummed paper: Horses Plowing (red), Milking Cows (red-violet; Benfield called it purple), and Planting (blue). They are known to have been printed in horizontal 3-strips containing all three designs per strip. Benfield/Nørdam numbers: 404/406-E (7a, 8b, 9c). Their reference indicates that these essays are "often difficult to find", with a rarity factor of S3 (valued $50 to $100 per item). To say "often difficult to find" is an understatement in my opinion; other than the pictures in the book, these are the only examples or pictures of examples that I can recall seeing in 46 years. Given the rarity and topicality, they certainly deserve a valuation at the top end of the scale. From an artistic standpoint, these are very free-flowing and modern for stamp designs of the era.

"BAGSVÆRD ASYL" 2 øre Charity Seal. Mint, F-VF, with hinge remnant. Gray frame, with brown center picturing group of children. I have found one reference indicating that this was issued in 1912. Bagsværd is now a suburb of København. In 1861, a local person started the first nursery or cresh for the children of working class families; it eventually also included what we would now call a kindergarten. It was taken over by the municipality in 1935. During the years of private operation, families paid what they could, but most of the funding came from donations and the sale of seals such as this. Information from this website (Tip: Paste this link into https://translate.google.com and set the languages from Danish to the language of your choice.) This seal is fairly scarce; this is the only example of this seal that I have had in 46 years.

1980 Slania-engraved Horse Statue test stamp. JSA Color "U": Black complete engraved design with two offset-printed colors: Orange Brown in various locations (mostly trees and pedestal) including in the PRØVE; Violet in various locations (mostly sky, horse, and pedestal) including in the PRØVE. THE ORIGINAL ENGRAVING with much greater detail and "PRØVE" engraved. This is a completely different Slania engraving from the commonly seen 1985 DFF multi-colored printing. White, white fluorescent paper, with invisible gum. This elegant engraving is RARE. I have recorded only a single example -- it came to me from a source other than directly from the original discovery (though it may have originally been from the original discovery and just not properly documented). NH VF single with bottom selvage. Very dramatic appearance, quite unlike the final colors.

This is only the second Kolding item that I have had bearing the printer imprint. An outstanding and important position piece.

The middle scarcity of the four known Kolding cancellations. This may be the only used example of stamp #2 that I have had in 46 years.

Kolding CR #3 [1888 3 øre rose Castle] Red color shade, seldom offered. USED VF with neat violet cancellation, on small piece. The cancellation appears to extremely faintly tie the stamp to the piece, but the tie is so faint that I am not able to guarantee it. If this is tied to the piece, it is the only Kolding local post stamp I have ever had in 46 years on piece (or on anything). CR cancel #2: not in oval, with curved Kolding and small K (2.5 - 3 mm). The middle scarcity of the four known Kolding cancellations. A very nice item!

Kolding CR #5I IMPERFORATE [1889 3 øre purple-brown Castle] Mint Superb top margin PAIR, with margins out to the dividing lines on all four sides, plus top margin, without gum as typical. Kolding CR #5I IMPERFORATE with EXTREMELY DARK COLOR on EXTREMELY THIN PAPER [1889 3 øre purple-brown Castle] Mint Superb PAIR, with margins out to the dividing lines on all four sides, without gum as typical. This 1889 issue is known to have been printed locally by a firm in Kolding and has small design difference from previous and has dividing lines between the stamps (unlike previous). I have never seen this imperforate with gum. Due to the different color and different paper, I suspect that this is actually a proof; no such proof has been cataloged either by CR or Daka. This is the only example of this color and/or this paper that I have recorded for this stamp, either imperforate or perforated. Outstanding item!

Aalborg CR #41 [October 1887 25 øre Three Towers and Posthorns] Mint VF, ORIGINAL GUM, 4-BLOCK. Attractive bicolored stamp. This stamp is very scarce with gum! The "5" of "25" exists in two major types, short flag and long flag, though the long flag has sub-types. All for of these stamps are long flag, but the left stamps have no hook on the end of the flag whereas the right stamps do have a hook.

Boom #3.12cj, Facit #H9, AFA #2kr-2 [1935 H.C. Andersen] NH VF complete booklet in wonderful, fresh quality. The cover has never been bent/creased. This example features: Sommerfuglen (The Butterfly) story on the interleaves; "Succes" (chocolate) back cover; and yellow rouletted coupon. The Sommerfuglen story is the most sought after by thematic collectors. The 2018 AFA value for the booklet is DKK 3500 = US$575. The booklets of this issue are often "well handled" but this example is very fresh.

ca.1933-1936 "Christian IV in Armour" engraved by Johannes Britze ("J-BRITZE" appears below the design), in BLACK on UNGUMMED WHITE PAPER. Design size 20 x 37 mm on paper roughly 40 x 58 mm. Listed by Benfield (Danish Essays, volume 2, on page 368 in the Test Stamp appendix) as a test stamp, known in "at least seven colors on white, wove, gummed paper without watermark". I have personally recorded one each gummed and ungummed examples, both in black. Presumed to be copper plate impressions from a hand press. The Danish Postal Museum has examples which appear to have been used for color samples of Sadolin and Holmblad inks. Johannes Britze engraved all the Danish (engraved) postage stamps from 1933 to 1944. Not listed by AFA (which does list other test stamps) presumably because this and some other designs do not quite resemble postage stamps, though they were prepared for postal testing purposes. The items in this era that AFA does list, also engraved by Britze, are listed with values ranging from DKK 1500 to 3000. I have only recorded having two examples of this design in 45 years. Very scarce and beautiful! I believe that fewer than ten examples exist in private collections.

1985 Slania-engraved Horse Statue test stamp. JSA #"1985-A" (was [1980] "D") NEW DISCOVERY as of September 2012 -- THE ONLY VARIATION (up to September 2012) OF THE 1985 PRINTING THAT I HAD RECORDED. After the 1980 printings, the die and plate were apparently lost or destroyed, thus a completely new engraving had to be made. There are many design differences between the original 1980 engraving and the 1985 engraving; this is the 1985 engraving. This previously unrecorded stamp is probably a "real" test stamp, that was actually used for testing, from the 1985 engraving (it is different from the large quantity specially printed for distribution to collectors). It appears very similar to the issued 1985 stamp except that the colors are less vibrant, with much lighter yellow, the PRØVE looks Blue, and it is printed on off-white paper with BRIGHT YELLOWISH-WHITE FLUORESCENCE (instead of bright white paper with very strong dark yellow fluorescence of the issued stamp). This was the first 1985 printing I had recorded with a paper or color difference. As with the issued 1985 stamps, the PRØVE is not engraved. This stamp is RARE with only about 24 examples recorded from the original discovery. NH VF single. I cannot overemphasize the importance of this stamp; this variation of the 1985 engraving was not discovered until about 25 years after it was printed!
