C8 Pair [1963 0.45 mk Airmail] (VF) on 3 March 1969 airmail 10 gram cover from "HELSINKI 10", to the U.S., correctly paying the 0.90 mk rate (0.40 mk first 20 grams surface rate, 1 Jan 1963 - 31 Dec 1969; 0.25 mk per 5 grams airmail surcharge to Zone 3, 1 Nov 1967 - 31 Dec 1973). This total rate was only effective for about two years: 1 Nov 1967 - 31 Dec 1969.

WWII Era Stampless Soldiers Mail. ULTRAMARINE KENTTÄPOSTIA (field post / military mail) boxed handstamp (typical of one of the many styles) and January 1941 dated town postmark of KALLIOKOSKI (located halfway between the Karelian peninsula and Helsinki). TAPANILA / MOSABACKA (Finnish / Swedish language) bilingual 29 January 1941 receiving postmark on reverse. Mailed in the period between the Winter War and the Continuation War. The sender name and unit number are on the reverse. The amount of Kenttäpostia mail between the wars was lessened and examples in that period are more likely to also bear a "normal" town postmark in addition to the military marking. Ultramarine handstamps are much scarcer. Very fresh and attractive.

1932 4.50 mk METER IMPRINT from machine #444 with "GRONBLOM" company meter slogan. Sent AIRMAIL, 9 November 1932 from HELSINKI, with machine cancellation, to Birmingham, England. Bluish Finnish airmail label. Such metered covers from this period, especially to other countries, are surprisingly scarce -- they were not saved in the same quantities that stamped covers were saved. Finnish airmail covers from this era are at least "uncommon". Commercial mail with typical minor wear, but a very nice example.

132a, 149 Pair [1926 50 p M-17 Saarinen Lion perf 14.25 x 14.75; 1927 3 mk M-17 Saarinen Lion perf 14.25 x 14.75] (F-VF, VF) on March 1928 registered parcel card. UNUSUAL SENDING / RECEIVING PAIRING: Karelian Lost Territories "VIIPURI 2" [Viborg/Wiborg] (posthorn at bottom) to Arctic / Lapland ROVANIEMI (posthorn at bottom) receiver cancellation on reverse. The watermark is visible (at extreme oblique angle) on the #132a. The watermark is not visible on the #149 pair, however, the perforation 14.25 x 14.75 does not exist unwatermarked and while the swastika watermark (Scott 137) does exist on this perforation, it can usually be detected, thus I believe it to be 149 (the posthorn watermark is extremely difficult to see on cover). Registered parcel cards are scarce! While parcel cards from/within EITHER the Lost Territories or Lapland are not unusual, cards going from one to the other are unusual and add "spice" to a collection.

Finland Scott #176D [1945 5 mk blue M-30 Lion] (VF) on 8 January 1946 cover from MARIEHAMN to Stockholm, Sweden. Censored with Finnish #63 violet censor handstamp. The Nordic 20 gram letter rate of 5.00 mk was in use for only a short time: 1 July 1945 through 15 January 1946. Post-WWII Åland censored covers are scarce -- this may be the latest example I have seen. A very nice cover.

1841 complete folded letter, with contents, from Tammerfors to Åbo, delivered by PERSONAL MESSENGER, with fee paid by sender. From "S. Kuhlberg" to the company "Eschner and Dahlström", sent 22 June. The line below the address translates to "umbrella accompanies". The diagonal writing and the (originally, since flattened out) folded corner is a tradition held over from earlier times. The fold creates a sealing-wax point that allows use of less paper (which was costly both in terms of material and transport). INCLUDES TRANSLATION of brief message, asking the recipient to release to the messenger a shipment of paper and noting that the umbrella that the sender had borrowed is being returned my the messenger. Umbrellas are a active topical collecting subject. While this item does not have a postal aspect of umbrellas, this is an exceptional and extremely scarce item for a broader social/display exhibit of umbrellas. Wonderfully fresh quality with beautiful script. Very little privately carried mail has been preserved outside of official archives and is seldom offered! A very nice example of activity in the broader communication system.

1851 envelope (no contents), from HELSINGFORS, with 30 September 1851 low-box postmark, to Borgå. A previous collector noted that the cancellation was Ossa Type 3, however the Gummesson - Ossa - Stenberg book indicates that only one device was used 1847-1851 even though it incurred very heavy wear. The envelope appears to have been handmade -- envelopes were scarce this early in Finland. Wonderful and ornate, intact, red wax seal. Attractive.

1853 folded letter (no contents), from HELSINGFORS, with high-box postmark, to Jacobstad. This postmark type has extremely small month/day numerals; I am guessing they are 13 and 6, for 13 June. On an inside flap, the recipient recorded arrival on 17 June. Wonderfully sharp postmark strike. Very attractive.

Russia Used in Åland: Facit #R7P2 [10 kopek, vertically laid paper] (damaged from placement over edge of card) on 8 March 1906 picture post card (fancy embossed design). This divided address-side card was used in 1906 before this format was approved in late 1907 for general use between UPU countries; in 1906 divided address-side cards were only being used domestically in some countries, or by agreement between a few countries. Mailed at JERSÖ (no post office) and picked up by a rural carrier using RURAL LETTER CARRIER #939 NUMERAL CANCELLATION; This rural route was established 1 February 1905 -- this is early use. Date canceled at MARIEHAMN (bilingual postmark) to the U.S. In this period, Russian stamps were required on mail to other countries, however examples from Åland are hard to find. Even domestic covers within Åland or from Åland to Finland are scarce with numeral cancellations. However, examples to other countries are extremely scarce. Despite the damage to the stamp, this card is very attractive -- and extremely scarce!

Russia Used in Finland: 1917 1 kopek Orange and 3 kopek Carmine, 5 kopek Brownish Lilac, and 1 rubel Brown and Orange IMPERFORATE Russian 1909-design stamps, Facit #RM30 3-strip, #RM32 pair, #RM34 pair, and sheet margin single of #RM37. All VF on 12 December 1917 REGISTERED cover from "HELSINKI H:o.I" to Sweden, with Helsinki processing postmark on reverse. (Sweden often did not backstamp registered mail at this time.) This WWI-ear cover bears a tri-lingual censor tape and a red censor handstamp on reverse. These stamps are "co-runners", Russian stamps that were not distributed in Finland, but were valid in Finland (they were usually carried in by travelers or obtained by philatelists), thus uses are usually very scarce. This is only the second Finnish on-cover use of these IMPERFORATE 1917 stamps that I have had in 46 years -- despite relatively modest catalog values, they are rarely offered in any Finnish-used form, not even as single used stamps. The 1 rubel stamp is extremely scarce Facit 2020 prices a used example at SEK 1600 but is unable to price any of these higher denominations on cover due to lack of sales information -- examples are that rare. While a high-franking cover such as this may presumed to be philatelic (but is still rare), but since it did go through censorship (and Sweden often did not backstamp registered mail at this time), it is NOT a "hand back" cover. This actually passed through the mail to Sweden. A very special item! I am not prepared to say that the imperforate 1 rubel on cover is unique, but it is certainly rare on or off cover (used in Finland). Despite the modest catalog values for the lower denominations (these imperforates are very scarce used in Finland), the Finnish-canceled stamps on this cover would, if removed from the cover, fetch at least $350. A spectacular Russification of Finland cover!

Clear Russian receiver on reverse show the cover being received (27 February) "before" it was mailed due to the Russian use of the Julian calendar. Mounting tape mark on back just barely shows through to front. Addressed to a museum; additional specific addressing added upon arrival. An attractive classic cover! 2020 Facit value SEK 2500.

Åland Frama 1984 (First Design): .10, 1.10, 1.40, 2.00 plus Åland 1.40 1984 Flag stamp and Finland 1982 2.40 Parliament stamp, total franking 8.40, on 11 December 1984 10 gram REGISTERED cover from HAMMARLAND to HELSINKI (with receiver on reverse). The registry label has handwritten "Hammarland" town name. At this time, Åland and Finland stamps were both valid in Åland. The Frama stamps represent the original three pre-set values, plus an ad-hoc .10 value. Quite interesting and unusual in several regards.

Finland #168 [1932 1.25 mark yellow M-30 Lion] (VF) on 6 June 1933 picture post card to Borgå (Finland) with MARIEHAMN (Åland) cancellation. The card was at least sold (and may have been produced) in Åland and is a nice lithographed photo of a farm fields in the Kirkeby area near Eckerö.

Finland #213 [1937 2 mark Field-Marshal Gustaf Mannerheim] (F-VF) on 20 July 1937 (the stamp was issued 4 June) letter card ("KORT-BREV / ÅLANDSPOST" with MARIEHAMN (Åland) bi-lingual cancellation, to KARIS, Finland, with a faint but clear 21 July 1937 bi-lingual receiver on reverse. The letter card (which originally had a sealing margin that was to be torn off to open it; there is a minor rounding at lower left) contains an extensive message and is completely non-philatelic. I have never before had (and I do not recall previously seeing) an example of an "ÅLANDSPOST" letter card. The card branding was presumably the invention of a local stationery supplier; I would be interested to know more about it. This stamp on cover (even when normally used from a mainland Finnish town) is quite sought after; Mannerheim was an important figure in the history of Finland.

Finland #38 x10 [1890 2 penni 3-Numeral] (F-VF) on 13 June 1891cover from ÅBO (Finland) with circle-of-dots "ÅBO-FINLAND" Finland-style cancellations, to GETA, ÅLAND, with a multiple 14 June 1891 MARIEHAMN 2-ring style receivers on the front. The ten 2 penni stamps correctly pay the 20 penni domestic letter rate to 15 grams. However, this franking is quite unusual and is very dramatic. That is was used on a cover to Åland is all the better! Slightly roughly opened at bottom, but looks great!

33 [1885 20 penni 4-Numeral, Orange, Perf 12.5] (F-VF) tied on very neat 22 May 1886 cover by carved "cork" grid cancellation and JOENSUU 2-ring dated side town cancellation. Joensuu had several similar style postmarks. Customary "ANK 25/5" (receiving) postmark. All such carved postmarks are at least scarce, and often rare, on cover -- especially examples this nice!

Correct violet illustrated (zeppelin) "SUOMI / FINLAND" postmark and correct Friedrichshafen, Germany, receiving postmark. A single stamp was required for post cards. Wonderful quality. The used stamp alone sells for $290 in this quality!

M9 (M8 with 1983 overprint), Facit #F9 [1983 Military overprint] (VF) on very fresh and attractive cover from PADASJOKI with 25 April 1983 proper cancellations. The stamp was valid from 20 April until the end of the military exercises, around 30 April. With proper military receiving cancellation on reverse. Only 11,600 letters were sent bearing this stamp (per Facit). M9 covers are often on larger envelopes or are not attractive; this example is especially nice. Priced not much more than a single used stamp.

This stamp is scarce as a solo franking on an ENVELOPE (usually they were used either with other stamps or on parcel cards). Very nice early post-war item.

Foreign printed matter rate of 10 mk and airmail surcharge for printed matter of 22 mk. An unusual rate combination that only existed 1 October 1957 through 31 July 1958 and is seldom seen (printed matter rate items were not often sent by air). Popular thematic.

Russification (End of Validity) of Finnish Stamp Designs. Mint VF picture post card illustrating the last four Finnish-design stamps produced (the four 3-Numeral Perf 14 x 13 issues). The upper stamp image is "canceled" 14.VIII.1900, when use on mail abroad (other than Russia, which was already forbidden in 1892) was forbidden. The three lower stamps are "canceled" 14.1.1901, when use within Finland (and thus everywhere) was forbidden. The stamp images are overlaid on two flags that never officially existed (white strip over blue stripe in the usual Finnish colors; yellow stripe over red stripe, colors sometimes used by Finnish patriotic groups during the Russification era). Public use of either flag was likely to get one into serious trouble (Russia of that day is not much different than Russia today when it comes to suppression of free speech.) This is a genuine ca 1900 picture post card, not a replica. Quite scarce! Wonderfully fresh quality.

B31-3 [1938 Skiing Competition semi-postal] VF registered FDC to Sweden. Crease between the stamps; not affecting the stamps and not obvious. The Swedes often did not backstamp registered mail such as this, but the violet "Aviserad" postal stamps on the front indicates that the local Swedish post office notified the recipient that they had mail to pick up; the marking is actually very scarce. Nice round stamp dealer advertising label on reverse. I have only had a few examples of this scarce FDC in 43 years.

M8, Facit #F8 [1963 Military stamp] Superbly centered, on cover from TAMPERE with 1 October 1963 proper machine cancellation (the stamp was valid from 26 September through 5 October) and with proper military receiving cancellation on reverse. The envelope is remarkably neat and tidy. M8 covers are often on larger envelopes or are not attractive; this example is especially nice. This example is priced not much more than a single used stamp!

The return address is commercial firm in Hamburg, German, and the address includes "Finnland", both indicating that the cover originated outside of Finland and carried outside of the mails via a forwarder who placed it in the mails at the Åbo port. The 2012 Facit value for a full cover of Roulette II is SEK 7500 = $1125! This very fresh and attractive piece looks like a full cover, but is priced much, much lower, of course.
