1948 German Olympic fundraising and promotional label for German participation in the 1952 HELSINKI, FINLAND OLYMPICS. Dark green on white paper. Design and text in reverse (white): hand holding Olympic Torch. Due to plate layout vs perforation machine layout, the centering varies a lot and VF centering is quite hard to find. No-gum (and damaged) examples are fairly easy to find, but NH examples seem to be hard to find. The lowest cost NH example I have recently seen offered was $14. NH VF Single.

Advertising Label: Pre-WWI issued by F.Å.A. [Finska Ångfartygs Aktiebolaget -- Finnish Steamship (Stock) Company]. Very attractive multi-colored life-saving-ring design -- including "gold" -- and listing the various steamship routes and names of ships operated by the company. This company surely carried a lot of mail -- it would be interesting to display this label with a piece of mail carried by this company. Rarely offered. All the examples I have ever seen had the same rough perforation. NEVER HINGED with VF centering.

1961 Europa (1960) Souvenir Card (looks more like a souvenir sheet). This souvenir card/sheet was distributed by Thomas De La Rue stamp printers at Stampex 1961 stamp show and pictures four proposed, unadopted designs (i.e. essays) for the 1960 Europa issue, along with an image of the approved design (lower right) in single-color gray (not one of the colors of the two issued bi-color stamps, thus making this design an essay as well). Designer names are in small text in the bottom margin of each stamp image. The approved design, by a Finnish designer, was used for all the Europa countries in 1960. Though it is gummed, this item was not valid for postage (the approved design has a thin white line through the denomination). The backside bears additional text and a serial number (different number on each). There was a time when these were regularly seen, but they are now only occasionally found. NH VF, perfect condition.

Mourning Stamp design printed on Christmas 1901 / New Years 1902 greeting card also bearing images of eight values of the 3-Numeral Finnish stamp issue and the Finnish coat of arms. In 1923 somebody wrote an explanation of the card on the backside. The text on the front is a protest statement. On the reverse is a printed holiday greeting . Interestingly, this card seems to have been printed in the U.S. and on the front bears the statement "COPYRIGHT 1901, / FINNISH LUTH. [LUTHERAN] BOOK CONCERN, HANCOCK, MICH." This appears to have been intended for sale to the Finnish community in the U.S., but it was produced in 1901. The card is a greeting card to be placed inside an envelope when sent to Finland, not a post card -- the Finnish post office rejected or destroyed post cards and envelopes bearing Mourning Stamps or such images or similar protest statements sent from abroad. Examples of items intended to be sent to Finland from abroad are extremely unusual.

1999 Finnish Roads officially issued combination postal cards / maximum cards set of four. Maximum card official #42-45. The maximum (picture) card side exists with either perforation 14 stamps or the very scarce perforation 12.75 stamps. The perforation 12.75 stamps were "accidentally" created by the stamp printer who was also the manufacturer of the first day covers, maximum cards, and other such philatelic products; they were not specified by the postal authorities -- the decision was made by the stamp printer. Because the vast majority of the perforation 12.75 stamps were used on canceled philatelic products, and were not generally sold in mint condition, they are very rare in mint. [The Scott catalog value for mint (or used) perforation 12.75 stamps is impossibly low; the 2012 Facit value is SEK 2400 (US$340) for mint set or pane or for a canceled complete pane -- even so, they are "impossible" to obtain.] To the best of my knowledge, virtually all the canceled single perforation 12.75 stamps come from FDCs or maximum cards -- supplies of those are extremely limited. When the maximum card sets were made, the set components were handled randomly, with the result that most sets seem to contain a MIX of perf 14 and perf 12.75 stamps. This MINT POSTAL CARD SET bears the perforation 12.75 Scott #1104a-1170b COMPLETE SET of single canceled stamps on the maximum card side. This is "rare" as a complete set.

It appears that a registry label, which had been at lower left, has been removed (not enough postage for foreign registered). Scarce and sought after by thematic collectors.
