VF: Julemanden 1952 TB Christmas Seal SINGLE. An unusual type of Christmas seals, that had different designs in 1951-1955, which are avidly sought by collectors of Greenland. Listed in the DAKA GF 7 Greenland Cinderella Catalog 1999 (most recent edition). Daka states that the idea for the seals was British; they were issued by the Anglo Danish [Sanatorium] Scheme for British Children jointly by the Anglo Danish Society and the NAPT, the National Association for the Prevention of Tuberculosis in England. The seals were to be affixed to letters with Christmas wishes addressed to Santa Claus, the North Pole. Under the arrangement, such mail was to be sent to Greenland! "Julemanden" [the Yule Man or the Christmas Man] is a reference to Santa Claus. Singles are "scarce" -- I am only rarely able to offer examples of these seals.

1939 Large-Numeral Postal Savings Stamp: 25 øre Clear Dark Ultramarine with black 1-line "Udstedet Akugd(lit)" village cancellation. This is a VERY SCARCE CANCELLATION that as of the Wowern 1988 GF1 Pakke-Porto catalog, NO postal uses (for parcel post instead of for savings) had been recorded to exist AND WOWERN DID NOT HAVE AN EXAMPLE OF THE CANCELLATION (even on a savings stamp) TO ILLUSTRATE IN THAT CATALOG! I am not aware of any postal-use discoveries since that time. The part of the cancellation that is on the stamp is quite clear and is the only possible village name per the Wowern listing. Used examples of these stamps came onto the market only around or after 2000. Prior to my examination of this style of savings stamp, it had not been recorded that at least two colors of the 25 øre exist (also Dark Blue). Used with XF centering and with excellent perforations for this issue, but with a crease that is only visible from the reverse. Used examples of these savings stamps are quite scarce, even with a "normal" cancellation.

1939 Large-Numeral Postal Savings Stamp: 25 øre Dark Blue with violet double-oval-crown "UDSTEDET RODEBAY" village cancellation. This is a very scarce cancellation in any type of use. This and one other that I obtained at the same time are the first uses of this Dark Blue color stamp with a village cancellation -- i.e. other than an Avane number cancellation! Used examples of these stamps came onto the market only around or after 2000. Prior to my examination of this style of savings stamp, it had not been recorded that at least two colors of the 25 øre exist (also Clear Dark Ultramarine). Used with XF centering and with excellent perforations for this issue, and NO defects. Used examples of these savings stamps are quite scarce, even with a "normal" cancellation.

1945-1955 Special Fee Stamp created using a special cancellation on postage stamp Scott #2 [5 øre King]. Only this postage stamp was used for this purpose, with a straight-line cancellation or an oval cancellation. Of straight-line cancellations, I have only recorded "GODTHAAB", though perhaps other towns exist. An extremely nice example, Stamp Type I, F-VF+ centered stamp, with nearly complete "GODTHAA(B)" well-placed on the stamp. Examples of this "special stamp" are seldom offered. Because the stamps were applied to payment transfer forms (similar to postal money orders), when the forms were redeemed for cash, the forms, with the stamps attached, were normally retained by the post office as their receipt for the completed transaction... thus examples of these specially canceled stamps are quite scarce.
Thule Local Post complete set of 5 IMPERFORATE REPRINTS in compact pairs (vertical pairs of the horizontal format stamps; horizontal pairs of the vertical format stamps). Ungummed, as issued, on bright white paper. These reprints were printed by typography (as were the originals) using original cliches. The cliches had been located in the Royal Greenland Trade Department (KGH) archives while the 1979 Red Cross Thule souvenir sheets and Thule souvenir cards were being developed (both also included reprints using original cliches). DAKA GF5 1999 states that these imperforate reprints appeared in 1995-96, but my database shows that I first obtained some in early 1993 (and they could have been available for some time before that). I recall that, at the time, Eric von Wowern indicated to me that they had been produced with supervision and knowledge of the Royal Greenland Trade Department (KGH) and for their benefit and/or charity fundraising. Other than what I purchased at the time, I have seen only a few sets of pairs, one set of 20-blocks (which quickly sold), and one set of sheets (which also quickly sold). They do not seem to have been distributed in large quantity or very widely. In my experience they are scarce. With VF full margins and in pristine condition!

Danish 1921 official national Christmas Seal. Design with GREENLAND THEME: Greenlandic Girl in traditional clothing, against snowy mountain background, Greenland POLAR BEAR coat of arms, Danish three lions coat of arms. FULL SHEET of 50 in wonderful quality. The sheet is extremely fresh and bright, with strong perforations without any separations and has never been folded. The gum is perfect except for four hinge marks, two in the top margin (selvage) and two on seals in the bottom row. (I have never seen a completely NH example of this sheet.) In the bottom margin (selvage) at the right, three of the selvage tabs have some excess adhesive on their fronts, likely from the production process -- most people would not notice it if it were not pointed out. The centering is generally F-VF (which very typical for the 1921 seals), however there are 17 seals that are VF or better, with a few in the XF or Superb range. This is the only example of a full sheet of the 1921 seal that I have actually recorded having in the last 48 years, but I have a vague memory of having one or two other examples back in the 1970s. Also, quite notably, while I have quantity stock of most 1910s-1920s seals, I have no backup stock of this year and when I purchased the remains of the huge A.E. Pade (famous Danish stamp dealer who moved his business to the U.S. in the 1930s) Christmas Seal stock back in the 1970s, there were virtually no examples of this year in his stock. I do not know if this year was printed in panes of 50 or if it was printed in larger sheets that were divided into panes of 50. However, due to the printing method (typography) and the method of production, tiny (flyspeck) differences can be found for most or all positions... thus this sheet (pane) could be used as the basis of plating this issue if one were so inclined. A "rare" and beautiful item that would be very important for a Danish Christmas Seal collection and a crowning piece for a Greenlandic Christmas Seal collection. The AFA 2021 catalog value for a NH perfect sheet is DKK 4500 (about US$675 [4/2022]). That value seems quite low to me considering the rarity! AFA also gives a value of DKK 2000 for a sheet that has been folded and/or with separations and/or hinged, etc. The break-up value of this sheet is over $500. This is much, much nicer than that! It is not often that I can offer such a beautiful item!

While the engraving of the blackprint is the same for the three countries, the penciled notations are different. All three are signed by the artist Mikael Melbye and the engraver Martin Mörck. Denmark has X/1500 and DK notation. Faroe with X/700 notation. Greenland with only the signatures. 1939 Large-Numeral Postal Savings Stamp: 1 Krone Orange 4-BLOCK with VF Crown and "Kolonien / Umanak" village postal cancellations. Used examples of the 1 Krone value are extremely scarce and blocks are rare; this is the first used block I have had in 37 years and only the second I can recall seeing. Used with VF/F-VF centering with extremely good perforations. Beautiful and rare, but priced as singles!

1939 Large-Numeral Postal Savings Stamp: 25 øre Dark Blue NEVER HINGED lower left corner margin 4-block. NH examples are extremely scarce and are seldom offered; blocks are much scarcer. Centering F-VF/Fine with typical variance. The narrow bottom margin is exactly the same as all other bottom margin examples I have ever seen. Interesting variety (does not add to price) showing a diagonal blue plate scratch that on the upper right stamp extends from betweet "it" of "sitdlimat" down through the "Ø" of "ØRE" and then into the lower stamp between the "dl" and down through the "R" of "ØRE". Such fresh quality is rare.
