U.S. Scott #300 [1903 1c Franklin] (VF) on 1907 attractive and very fancy (including gold coloring) embossed, color picture post card from Johnstown, New York, to Canada. The use to Canada is slightly unusual and the full-back (pre-1907, pre-divided-back) style is unusual. However, the key feature of this card is that it pictures American and Swedish flags, but the Swedish flag is a very unusual version, called a "pilot flag" or "diplomatic flag" or "Swedish civil ensign with the union mark in the canton", used for certain purposes 1844-1905. The card is American made and the artists did not get the Swedish flag details exactly correct, but this is the only example I can remember seeing in 50 years of this particular style flag on a picture post card. Swedish flag picture post cards are "fairly unusual", with 90% of them being one of a half-dozen designs. Anything beyond that limited group of designs is "extremely unusual".

1234 Brown [11 April 1978 Brown Bear (brown 1978 printing); engraved by SLANIA] (VF) with VF BJURSÅS cancellation, on 5 May 1978 picture post card [Bjursås village scene], used domestically. An exceptionally nice example with cancellation matching the card. This stamp had multiple possible postal rate solo uses, but was issued after the first rates first started: 1) Domestic post card rate 1 Feb 1978 thru 15 June 1980. 2) Same for Nordic post card rate. 3) Domestic "A" printed matter rate to 20 grams 1 Feb 1978 thru 15 June 1980 (scarce). 4) Same for Nordic "A" printed matter. 5) Domestic "B" printed matter rate to 20 grams 16 June 1980 thru 13 May 1981 when the domestic and Nordic printed matter rate categories ceased (scarce). 6) Same for Nordic "B" printed matter. The stamp was reprinted in 1997 in red-brown color, but it is unclear for what postage rate that was intended, other than as a make-up value.

1234 Brown [11 April 1978 Brown Bear (brown 1978 printing); engraved by SLANIA] (VF) with VF 28 April 1981 "STOCKHOLM BAN / E" machine cancellation, on UNSEALED "B" printed matter envelope, used domestically. This example shows a SORTER MARKING consisting of white vertical bars over the address area; these fluoresce yellow under long-wave UV light and are only found on some mail from the largest cities, and only for a few years. An excellent example. Kumla #1-2 [1945 4 and 8 öre] (VF) on 16 April 1945 unaddressed first day cover bearing both round and oval style cancellations, one on each of the two stamps. This is also the first day of the local post operation. The dual canceling of this FDC is quite unusual in philately: One stamp was applied and canceled with the oval cancellation, then the decision was made to add the other stamp and cancel it, but using the round cancellation (thus sometimes the second stamp is slightly on top of the first/oval cancellation!). Mix of "B" and/or "D" straight edges (side and/or corner positions). Postally used singles of these two stamps sell for around $30 PER STAMP! Despite the modest value of the FDC, examples are seldom offered!

Sweden Ring-Type Covers to Foreign Countries: Collection of 17, 1872-1891: A remarkably unusual (as a collection) offering of RING-TYPE (the stamp designs in Scott #17-49) stamps on covers mailed to foreign destinations. All of the covers are somewhat worse for wear, but this is quite typical for covers to other countries from 120-150 years ago! There are a total of 17 covers to 6 different destination countries, as follows: Denmark x1 with a Superb Scott #22 with a superb 1872 (first year of issue) cancellation. England x3 including a Scott #23. Wales x1 (which from a postal history standpoint is tremendously scarcer from Sweden than the rest of the UK; sent to the Swedish Consulate in Cardiff). Germany x7 with a variety of different stamps and manners of use; one has a Swedish Royal Family seal on the reverse. Norway x2, both 1876 with 12 öre stamps in different color shades, one with plate varieties. USA x3, to unusual destinations of California, South Carolina, and Oregon. Again, all of these covers have various types of heavy wear or defects, but the stamps are mostly okay. They are on a collectors album pages with additional annotations and illustrations of the postmarks, but because of how the pages were stored, I suggest moving them to your own album pages (you can clip out and mount the postmark illustrations). If all these covers were in much better (but still not perfect) quality, the would have a total individual retail value of about $950 -- there are some quite unusual covers in this group. However, in the quality they are in, their individual retail values totals about $245. I am offering them as a collection, further discounted! This would be a great way to spice up your stamp collection and/or to start exploring early Swedish covers. Shipping cost is additional for this item.

"NYKÖPING / FrBr" Free Letter (official mail) to Fahlun (Falun) semi-circular cancellation; a beautiful strike on a superb folded cover (no contents). Facit Postal X (page 71) indicates this postmark was in use 1823-1853, however, a strike this nice must have been from the early years before the device became worn. This is one of the more interesting looking Swedish postmark designs from this era. One could not ask for a nicer looking example!

SKÖFDE straight-line cancel, used 1819-1830, (VF) on very attractive official mail "Fr.Br." folded cover, no contents, to Mariestad. The handwritten "4" is the "charta" number; the recording serial number for the contents of the mailbag. A nice red wax seal with an adjacent signature. (Because the wax seal, in this case, was a private seal, not an official office seal, I believe the sender had to sign the cover to announce their authority to send this as free official mail.) Excellent quality. Facit Postal X value SEK 400, but this is more attractive than usual.

STOCKHOLM 10 July 1849 circular cancellation on complete folded letter with contents, to London, via HAMBURG. With double-ring circular transit postmark on reverse of "KS&NPA / HAMBURG" [Royal Swedish and Norwegian Post Office in Hamburg]. The postmark is on top of the red London postmark. Designated "K15" (and valued at $50-100 in 1999) by Hughmark and Halpern, it was in regular use 1848 through 1856 -- this is relatively early use when the device was still in good condition. Also present are a Hamburg postmark, and a London receiver, with various rate markings, including being re-rated. The contents are in English; a letter discussing payment for insurance on a shipment from Sweden to New York, and accounting for various other payments. (It is amazing that all parties were able to keep straight all these details.) An attractive early cover in excellent condition.

96 x5 [1911 2 öre Arms, Wavy-Lines Watermark] (Fine) on 10 February 1912 picture post card sent from MALMÖ to "EMPIRE, CANAL ZONE, PANAMA, CENTRAL AMERICA". The town of Empire was located in the eastern third of the Zone. While it is not, by that name, on current maps, I found it on a 1920 map at images.google.com. Panama joined the UPU in 1904, thus this is a standard 10 öre foreign post card rate. The stamps have tropical aging as expected for mail to Panama. The card itself is a "Helsning Från Malmö" (i.e. Greetings From, or Grüsse Aus) pre-1907 (undivided back), probably ca.1904. There is no receiving postmark, but one is not expected on such a post card to Panama. The card, addressed to "Miss Minnie Briggs" has an extensive message (on the picture side) and is clearly part of a continuing correspondence. The card is in generally good quality with only rounded corners; the aging is restricted to the stamps because the stamp adhesive was more vulnerable to the Panama climate. Panama is a rare destination for Swedish mail in this time period. The 2015 Facit Postal IX -- this information is not in the more recent Postal X -- states that covers to Panama are unknown through 1891, the end of Ringtype stamp period; then 2-3 covers known with Oscar II stamps 1891-1911; then ***UNKNOWN*** again with Gustaf V or Arms stamps 1910-1920 [THIS PERIOD]; then 2-3 covers known in the 1920-1938 period. While other covers/cards may exist that have not been recorded, it is clear that is quite rare; and may be the only now-recorded cover. I have reported it to Facit. An important cover (card) for an "Arms issue" collection or a foreign destinations collection.

O17b Rose (Type I), Facit #TJ16Ac, Rose Carmine [1885 10 öre large-format Official, Perf 13, Plate Type I, Rose Carmine] (VF+) PAIR on 25 July 1885 royal decree (partial contents), sent from SÄMB (very scarce cancel; Facit Postal 2015 rarity factor 100) to the small village of Länghem. The address is written diagonally in the archaic custom because early Swedish official mail was folded into a triangle (to make it more obvious that it was important, official mail), and thus this is how it would look when unfolded. The 20 öre franking most likely indicates a 15-125 gram weight as a letter. The printers legend on the backside indicates that the item has 3 "ark" (sheets), but this object is the outer cover of that booklet of royal decrees; the other decrees are no longer present (this is very typical of such mail artifacts). This decree provides import taxation details for "vin" (wine), with rates up to 21% alcohol, 21-25%, noting that above 25% taxation is as liquor. That is some heavy duty "wine"! There is a paper loss in the center of the text. The decree is signed in the name of OSCAR (Oscar II, reign 1872-1908). An excellent example of the 10 öre Type I stamps on cover -- examples with more than one stamp are seldom offered; and an extremely nice use of the SÄMB cancellation. Also a nice WINE TOPIC item! [Sämb was so small that it essentially does not exist today and is very difficult to find on a map (at southern Norwegian border). I would like to learn why a decree printed in Stockholm was mailed from Sämb to a small village in inland Sweden.]

O20 [1891 20 öre BLUE large-format Official, Perf 13] (Fine+) solo use on 25 June 1900 ROYAL HIGH COURT in STOCKHOLM, an order sent to the Magistrate in Falun, with rough translation included. To the Falun Town Council: Ordering and naming the temporary replacement of the town mayor due to the leave of absence. The letter is sealed with a separate star-shaped impressed paper wafer. The paper is an extremely heavy two-pane full-folio size, with ornate watermarks: SVERIGE STATEN on one pane and a large crowned 3-crown shield coat of arms on the other pane. The paper results in requiring 20 öre postage for 15 to 125 grams. While quite an ordinary-purpose document, the form of the document, the extremely costly paper, etc., illustrates the large and obvious role that the royal establishment played in local community affairs. While this stamp on cover is not unusual, a nice high court document is very unusual. It would seem to me that the city of Falun or its historical society should purchase this document.

"SVENSKA BATALJONEN / SAAR" 1 February 1935 postmarks on Scott #239 4-block, 244 [1935 5 öre sheet/bklt stamp and 15 öre coil Riksdagen (Parliament) 500th] (F-VF) on REGISTERED COVER. CORRECT POSTAGE RATE (15 öre domestic letter to 20 grams plus 20 öre registry fee). With correct rate, stamps just issued 20 days before, etc., this looks like it could be non-philatelic use. A simple, clean, correct-looking cover. The Swedish Saar Battalion was part of an international peacekeeping force during the Saar Plebiscite, deciding if the Saar area would become part of France or Germany. With only 261 battalion members and less than two months deployed (23 December 1934 through 17 February 1935), any examples are unusual. Very attractive!

"SVENSKA BATALJONEN / SAAR" 9 February 1935 postmark on Scott #241 [1935 15 öre sheet/bklt stamp Riksdagen (Parliament) 500th] (F-VF) on attractive cover with CORRECT POSTAGE RATE (15 öre domestic letter to 20 grams). Bears very clear violet, 2-line handstamp "Zur Erinnerung an Die Abftimmung / im Saargebiet am 13. Januar 1935" (A reminder of the vote in the Saar region on 13 January 1935). I have not previously seen an example of this handstamp and I am not sure why this handstamp would be on a February cover, but it does make it a very special cover. With correct rate, stamp just issued 30 days before, addressed to a woman, etc., this looks like it could be non-philatelic use. A simple, clean, correct-looking cover. "SVENSKA BATALJONEN / SAAR" 16 February 1935 postmark on Scott #244 [1935 15 öre coil Riksdagen (Parliament) 500th] (F-VF) on attractive Saar picture post card ("Saarbrucken Winterbergdenkmal"). The 15 öre franking overpays the applicable domestic rate (10 öre domestic post card), but is the correct rate for a foreign post card, which the sender may have had in mind. The card has a simple one-word message (Greetings) and could certainly be non-philatelic use. Canceled on the penultimate day of this postal service. "SVENSKA BATALJONEN / SAAR" 13 January 1935 postmark on Scott #239-247 COMPLETE SET [1935 Riksdagen (Parliament) 500th complete set] (Fine, F-VF, VF) on attractive cover. It should be noted that 13 January covers exist with a backdated cancellation, but those have a straight-top "3" of 13 in the day -- this has the correct rounded-top "3" of 13 in the day. While there is certainly no doubt that this is a philatelic use, it is possible that this is actually a first day use of this set of stamps in Saar -- it likely took that long for the stamps to reach these soldiers. These stamps were issued on 10 January in Sweden -- I have not recorded use of this stamp issue earlier than 13 January in Saar; please let me know if you are aware of any earlier uses. The fact that an entire set was used supports the idea that this may be a Saar-use FDC. The Swedish Saar Battalion was part of an international peacekeeping force during the Saar Plebiscite, deciding if the Saar area would become part of France or Germany. "SVENSKA BATALJONEN / SAAR" 18 January 1935 postmark on an unusual combination of 10 stamps including the watermarked Scott #212 with a SUPERBLY CENTERED CANCELLATION, from six different issues, on attractive cover. The watermark of the UPU Kongress 10 öre, Scott #212, can be seen by holding the cover up to a strong light while looking through from the inside to the front -- it is very clear. This watermarked stamp in this centering (with a normal cancel) would be about $50 off-cover, but with a Superb cancel about $100, and with a Superb SAAR cancellation, who knows what it could achieve! The price of this cover is essentially the price of this single, off-cover stamp with this cancellation. Either this was philatelic or the sender was just having fun. The Swedish Saar Battalion was part of an international peacekeeping force during the Saar Plebiscite, deciding if the Saar area would become part of France or Germany. "SVENSKA BATALJONEN / SAAR" 16 February 1935 postmark directly on the cover (not on any stamps), with 8 different 1927//1934 SAAR STAMPS in the range Scott #120//144. The Saar stamps are canceled two days later on 18 February at "MERZIG (SAAR)" with tourism-promotion cancellation pitching "Romantic Saar". I guess with the civil strife settled down a bit and the next war still a couple years away, it was time to go to a nice bed and breakfast place in Saarland. 17 February was the last day of the Swedish postal operations in Saar. I am not sure why this had the Swedish postal marking, but no Swedish stamps, and then two days later received the Saar postal markings on Saar stamps. This is the only example I can recall seeing in 46 years of a Swedish Saar Battalion postal marking on a cover that was actually apparently carried out via the Saar postal service instead of the Swedish military postal service. The cover is a bit wrinkled if you look closely, as if somebody was carrying it in their rucksack. I cannot prove anything, but my sense of it is that this is a genuine non-philatelic use -- however I could be very wrong. The Swedish Saar Battalion was part of an international peacekeeping force during the Saar Plebiscite, deciding if the Saar area would become part of France or Germany. 13 Light Yellowish Brown [1862 3 öre Lion, Type II (1863)] SUPERB PAIR on 8 July 1872 PRINTED MATTER rate folded letter front-only. Archival crease, not affecting the stamps. The stamps are of an unusual color and Superb centering is really quite scarce for this issue. Off cover, the Superb pair of this color would sell for $50. (Note that this is just a front, not the full cover.) Priced only as the used pair of stamps! Beautiful.

58 [1891 10 öre Engraved Oscar] (VF) on 14 August 1908 picture post card (photo scene from town of Säfsjö) to the U.S., with RAILWAY cancellation "PKXP. No 2 A. INR. U.", Danish transit postmark (unusual on mail to the U.S.), and red U.S. New York "DEFICIENCY / IN / ADDRESS / SUPPLIED / BY / NYPO - I.D." handstamp. The so-called deficiency is that somebody could not read "Mass" as the state, even though it was right there. What makes this card especially interesting is that it is a HAND-DRAWN DIVIDED BACK card. Prior to 1 October 1907 divided back cards to the U.S. were charged at the letter rate. This sender was utilizing an earlier undivided-back card, dividing the back so that a message could be written without obscuring the picture on the other side. I do not recall previously seeing a Swedish hand-drawn divided-back card. This is an important type of item in the time line of the postal history of Swedish post cards.

LAHOLM straight-line F-VF postmark on 14 January 1830 folded letter, complete with contents, to Warberg. This postmark is always faint. The very thin paper results in the interior writing showing through. A very scarce postmark; Facit Postal VIII 2009 value SEK 1800 = $270!

J15 [1922 10 øre Green Postage Due] (VF) tied by 26 July 1922 KJØBENHAVN cancellation on 24 July picture post card posted aboard the Swedish naval ship H.M.S. SVERIGE (apparently near Båstad, Sweden, at the time). There appears to have been a stamp affixed and canceled at lower right, but it must have quickly come off; there is a Swedish octagonal-boxed "T." handstamp, a blue manuscript Danish "10", and the Danish postage due stamp. If there had been a stamp that had fallen off, this should not have been rated as postage due.

J18 [1930 20 øre Gray Postage Due] (VF) tied by 31 August 1932 KØGE cancellation on 31 July seemingly unpaid (a stamp could have fallen off) picture post card (Kärnan tower in Hälsingborg, Sweden). No Swedish postage due markings, thus was probably mailed on the ferry or train between Hälsingborg, Sweden, and Helsingør, Denmark. Blue manuscript Danish "20 T", and the Danish postage due stamp.

Iceland #117 [1920 15 aur Christian X, still in active use at the time] (F-VF) on 7 July 1934 Icelandic picture post card (real photo of Leif Ericsson statue) mailed aboard and WITHIN the SWEDISH cruise ship M/S Kungsholm, as it crossed the Arctic Circle, presumably after most recently having visited Iceland. Small spot near top. Canceled and handstamped with the seemingly full range (five different) of the official postal cancellations and handstamps available in the ship post office. Though I have handled hundreds of Kungsholm covers mailed at sea around the world, this is the first in 38 years that I can recall being mailed WITHIN the ship and probably one of less than five that have borne Icelandic stamps or markings.
