Newspaper Tax (Tidnings Stämpel): Type XI, 7/10 öre red revenue handstamp on the front cover of a 1870 medical journal. An excellent example, about as clear and neat as these are found. Type XI was (in the 1952 listing) know in eight denominations, ranging from 2/10 through 9/10. [Newspapers, magazines, almanacs, etc. were subject to taxation and from 1824-1872 revenue handstamps were used to show payment of the tax. Part of the tax was for general revenue and part was reimbursed to the post to cover delivery expenses; thus these markings are both revenue and postage at the same time. In larger publications, the handstamps may have been applied several times in the publication, depending upon the tax rate. The types are illustrated in the 1952 Swedish cancellation handbook on page 211. I sometimes have this book available for sale.] Only the front cover. Such nice examples are seldom seen.

1972 "Diplom" (award certificate) "souvenir page" for the Most Beautiful Swedish Stamp of 1971. Awarded in May 1972 as a prize for being among those who selected the particular stamp design: The center stamp (crown on blue background) of the 1971 Crown Regalia stamp issue [Scott #899-903, printed by photogravure, but designed by SLANIA]. A strip of five uncanceled stamps is affixed to the certificate. Yellowish laid paper, 210 x 296 mm. My recollection is that only 100 people received this certificate; this is only the second example I have recording seeing or having. [Included are a ca.1950s-1960s color Swedish map and a 1968 folder picturing and describing in Swedish the Stockholm Castle; these were in the package with the "Diplom", but I cannot be sure that they were received as part of the prize.]

"PS" Internal Post Office Postal Stationery: Large 322 x 228 mm card-stock envelope. White card-stock with all-over bright blue printing (text and images in reverse, white). "PS" [and crown] indicia in upper right. "Postpost" vertically at right, with return address of "Poststyrelsens PR-Avdelning 10500 Stockholm" (the post office public relations department). This dates from 1972 or before. There are no postal markings, but it was used in May 1972, sent to a person in Sweden who was one of the winners of the 1971 Most Beautiful Stamp contest. Has the expected bends and spots from going through the mail, and a tape closure mark on the backside -- it is in remarkably nice quality for this type of large item. This category of item is considered to be postal stationery, but very few such items have actually been systematically cataloged. (A few items from the 1920s-1960s are listed in the Facit SVERIGE 2023, but that hardly scratches the surface of what exists.) Because these items did not bear stamps nor does the indicia look like traditional postal stationery, the vast majority (probably 99.9%) of examples were discarded. While extant examples may not have a lot of financial value, most are likely "quite scarce" or even "rare". Collecting such postal stationery (from any country) can be an inexpensive and fun challenge. It would be great if collectors could gather and develop an online census of the Swedish "PS" items that are known to exist. [Because of the size and the low price, shipping / handling is additional.] Shipping cost is additional for this item.

Kumla #1-2 [1945 4 and 8 öre] (VF) on 16 April 1945 unaddressed first day cover bearing both round and oval style cancellations, one on each of the two stamps. This is also the first day of the local post operation. The dual canceling of this FDC is quite unusual in philately: One stamp was applied and canceled with the oval cancellation, then the decision was made to add the other stamp and cancel it, but using the round cancellation (thus sometimes the second stamp is slightly on top of the first/oval cancellation!). Mix of "B" and/or "D" straight edges (side and/or corner positions). Postally used singles of these two stamps sell for around $30 PER STAMP! Despite the modest value of the FDC, examples are seldom offered!

Scott #294 [1939 15 öre Carl von Linne (or Linneaus), Coil] F-VF stamp on face of VF real-photo picture post card of a Linne portrait engraving. Canceled at DIÖ -- the birthplace of Linne -- on 30 April 1947. Linne was born 23 May 1707, thus this card may have been prepared in advance of a 240th birth anniversary celebration. While this postmark is not "scarce" according to the Facit Postal (cancellation catalog), I cannot recall previously having an example of a Diö cancellation -- this is a very small place with a current population of only about 900 people. Linne is a very important topical subject for anybody interested in natural history, botany, biology, zoology, taxonomy (the naming and organization) of all plants and animals, etc. Interesting philatelic Linne-related items such as this are extremely unusual, especially items from before the 1970s. This is the only example of this maximum card that I have recorded having in 50 years.

Scott #329 [1942 20 öre red King Gustav (Gustavus) III (1746-1792), from Booklet] VF stamp on face of VF real-photo picture post card of a Gustav III painting portrait. Canceled STOCKHOLM ca.1948. Gustav III had a remarkable history in short reign, starting with his 1772 takeover the Swedish crown in a coup and ending with his assassination in 1792. In the years between he made massive changes to Swedish government, culture, and the arts. One of his many and wide-ranging reforms was to legalize Catholic and Jewish presence in Sweden. His Wikipedia article is very much worth a read. Due to his many accomplishments, Gustav III deserves a place in many types of philatelic topical collections. This is the only example of this maximum card that I have recorded having in 50 years. Swedish maximum cards from this era are scarce.

Scott #382 [1946 20 öre red Alfred Nobel, from Booklet] VF stamp on face of VF picture post card of a Nobel portrait. Canceled STOCKHOLM 28 June 1947. From Wikipedia: "Alfred Bernhard Nobel was a Swedish chemist, engineer, inventor, businessman, and philanthropist. He is known for creating dynamite [and the blasting cap] as well as having bequeathed his fortune to establish the Nobel Prize. He also made several important contributions to science, holding 355 patents in his lifetime." Due to his many accomplishments, Nobel deserves a place in many types of philatelic topical collections, beyond the expected Nobel Prize collections. This is the only the second or third example of this maximum card that I have recorded having in 50 years. Swedish maximum cards from this era are scarce.

Scott #386 [1947 10 öre violet King Gustav V, Coil] XF stamp on face of VF picture post card of a Gustav V portrait, printed in blue. Canceled with the official STOCKHOLM 8 December 1947 FIRST DAY cancellation. I believe that this is the only the second example of this maximum card that I have had in 50 years. This maximum card meets the most pure definition for a "maximum" card: Picture post card design similar to the stamp but not a picture of the stamp and canceled with a first day cancellation of the stamp. Swedish maximum cards from this era are scarce.

International Reply Coupon (IRC): SFF Catalog 1988-89 #11a. 1964 Type (Wien / Vienna UPU Congress 1964). "SUEDE - SVERIGE" printed in red and denomination "1,25 Skr" printed in blue. This type/denomination in use 1 July 1972 until replaced in 1975 with a new type, but same denomination. There were two sub-types of this design/denomination: This is sub-type "a" with Watermark III (small, many-repeated "UPU") and German text on back includes "...der Taxe...". [Sub-type "b" has watermark II (a single large double-lined "UPU") and the German text on back instead includes "der Gebühr...".] This example is completely uncanceled. While most selling countries did apply their postmark in the top or left position, the UPU did not require that the selling post office apply a postmark. Almost all Swedish IRCs that I have seen did bear a Swedish postmark. This is in 100% Mint (NH) VF condition and was never redeemed for stamps to mail a letter. Though from the "modern era", this is quite unusual without a Swedish postmark.

International Reply Coupon (IRC): SFF Catalog 1988-89 #7b. 1929 Type (London UPU Congress 1929). "SUEDE - SVERIGE" printed in blue and denomination "70 ÖRE" printed in blue. This type/denomination in use 1 April 1959 until replaced in 1963 with a new denomination. There were two sub-types of this design/denomination: This is sub-type "b" with "C22" at top right. [Sub-type "a" has "FORMULE C22" at top right.] This example was sold and postmarked on left side at "SOLVESBORG C" 3 August 1960. This is in "Mint" (NH) Postmarked VF condition and was never redeemed for stamps to mail a letter. (If it had been redeemed to mail a letter -- thus "Used" -- there would be another postmark, on the right side.) Swedish examples of the 1929 Type are remarkably hard to find!

International Reply Coupon (IRC): SFF Catalog 1988-89 #5a. 1929 Type (London UPU Congress 1929). "SUEDE - SVERIGE" printed in blue and denomination "40 ÖRE" printed in blue and overprinted "50 [solid square]" in violet. This type/denomination / overprint was in use 1 November 1949 until replaced soon after with a printed 50 öre denomination. The underlying 40 öre version had 9 different versions (plus an overprint on 30 öre), but this overprint was only on the last version SFF #4j. This example was sold and postmarked on left side at "TRELLEBORG C" 5 March 1950. This is in "Mint" (NH) Postmarked VF condition and was never redeemed for stamps to mail a letter. (If it had been redeemed to mail a letter -- thus "Used" -- there would be another postmark, on the right side.) Swedish examples of the 1929 Type are remarkably hard to find, especially the early denominations and most especially the overprints. 1978 Stamp Day: 1903 Stockholm General Post Office (Scott #66) in blue on heavy cream-colored paper, with all-over-printed grayish-blue background; all printing by offset in the form of halftone dots but very accurate image of stamp. Imperforate; overall measurement 105 x 150 mm. Backside of stamp with black "FRIMÄRKETS / DAG / 1976". Watermarked vertically (base of lettering to the right side when viewed from the front) in large outline lettering "NORMAL 1 ... UK" / "SVEN...". [I have only ever seen (or heard of) one example which I found in 2022, nor have I found any images of this item on the Internet. Other than being a production of the annual Stamp Day events, which were organized and produced by the post office, I do not have any further information about this item. Scott #1 Private Reprint souvenir sheet for the "Salon der Philatelie / zum XIX. Weltpostkongress / Hamburg 1984" stamp show. Perforated reproduction of the first Swedish stamp in green on a stamp-size cream-colored background, on white paper with a strong wavy-line watermark. All-over light gray diagonal text backprint on reverse. Overall souvenir sheet dimensions 60 x 80 mm. Appears to have been issued or at least partially distributed with the souvenir sheet in a stamp mount on a while card stock page measuring 185 mm x 210 mm, perhaps was one of a series. The text on the page includes the reproduction of manuscript "Pour la Suéde" and reproduction signature of Adolf Wilhelm Roos, Swedish Postmaster General 1867-1889 (who is pictured on Sweden Scott #259). [As of June 2022, I have only seen two examples of this small souvenir sheet, only one of which was on the full page. More information about this item is welcomed.] Example of the souvenir sheet on the full page.

Swedish Postman test stamp distributed in conjunction with the 14 June 1983 inauguration of the PFAs (Swedish Post) new printing press which was manufactured by the (now defunct) Maschinenfabrik GOEBEL GmbH i Darmstadt (Germany). The press could print three steel-engraved (recess) colors and four offset (lithographed) colors at one time. Engraved by Lars Sjööblom from the Carl Wilhelmson painting in the Stockholm Central Post Office building; with additional color lithographed printing on all but the top row. This test sheet was given (in a folder) to dignitaries and attendees at the inauguration ceremony. I am not aware of any other distribution and it was not sold by the post office. Supplies on the market are very limited; sheets generally sell for a few hundred dollars. I am only aware of this test stamp being distributed in a sheet of 40 consisting of 8 columns by 5 rows. However, some sheets have been broken up, thus singles and other units are seen. The perforating of the sheet was designed to be cut for placement in a booklet (two stamps wide); the outer left and right sheet margins are straight edges, while every other vertical column between stamps is imperforate (where they would be cut to make booklet panes). Thus one can have torn-out-of-sheet horizontal pairs perforated around the outside and imperforate between the columns of stamps OR manually-cut horizontal pairs that are imperforate on the left and right (and perforated between the columns of stamps), like traditional Swedish booklet panes and pairs. (I have seen images of items claimed to be booklet panes, but I do not know if they were hand-cut or removed from actual booklets. I have yet to see any intact booklets containing stamps from these sheets, but they may exist.) The "issued" sheet has blue text in the top margin; the upper right corner (including only two stamps of the sheet) bears a replica "STOCKHOLM / PFA" 14.06.83 black printed postmark. An "unissued" version of the sheet exists without the usual printing at top, but with color registration bars. All 40 stamps in the sheet were printed with the engraved portion of the design (text and lines of portrait) in bluish gray. The top row does not have any additional printing. The next three rows each have a single color added by offset (lithography): yellow, magenta, cyan (blue). The final (fifth) row combines all three offset colors (and the engraved color) to create a full, real-color design. This example consists of columns 6-7 from the sheet, imperforate vertically between the columns of stamps, and thus showing the left half of the replica postmark.

518/520 and 521/523 [1958 30 öre Helicopter Mail, engraved by Sven Ewert; 15 öre Ship (Transatlantic) Mail, engraved by Arne Wallhorn] Publicity proof typographed (without a lot of detail in the stamps) in black on uncoated yellowish card stock. [The card stock may originally have been whiter, but all examples I have seen are this yellowish color.] 147 x 105 mm. The two stamp issues had the same issue date, 10 February 1958 shown at top. This is the only issue-example of this particular style of publicity proof that I can recall seeing. All such Swedish publicity proofs are scarce, but publicity proofs this early are rarely offered. I only started in 1990 formally recording what I have had of these items, but since 1973 I have seen less four or less examples of this item. Very minor bend at top center, but still may be the best quality example I have had.

Sweden / Åland: An unusual form of Swedish "postal stationery" (listed by Facit under Swedish military postal stationery), a coupon used to obtain stamps for the Swedish soldiers stationed in Åland in 1918 -- only used for Swedish soldiers in Åland. There are two types listed by Facit. This is Type A, used to obtain official mail stamps. (Type B was used to obtain official mail postal stationery envelopes; extremely rare, Facit indicates one example known.) Mint VF in perfect condition. The only time I have been able to obtain any of these was a small group of 6-8 examples that I found in an old dealer stock in Sweden in 1995; I have not seen any before or since. Twenty-five years later I just found the group again, misplaced in our stock. [Includes a photocopy of listing from Facit Catalog.]

Lower left corner perforation tooth rounded and two very slightly shorter perforation teeth. This is Type "g" (of the nine types of the 4 sk reprints). There were two reprintings in 1868; they differ only very slightly in appearance and are hard to separate. Between the two printings, a total of 1885 reprints were printed, of those only 209 were Type "g". Assuming the more common of the two 1868 reprintings, the Facit 2020 value is SEK 4000! 1912 Stockholm Olympic Games label (poster stamp) with SWEDISH TEXT ("OLYMPISKA SPELEN"). NH with VF centering, but typical short perforations. Unusual variety: The beige ink of the skin areas is instead brown. This was likely either contamination of the ink on the press or poorly mixed ink. I have not previously encountered and example of this color variation. While Swedish is one of the more common languages (English and German are the most common), the color variety is quite exceptional.

I have never seen this before (on any language of label), but with a sheet size of 81, I probably have not seen enough examples. While this is supposedly not a scarce language, I have only seen a couple Portuguese examples in the last 46 years.

1941 Sancta Birgitta / St. Bridget Test Stamp: Defaced "mother die" showing complete design as issued except the denomination area is a white square and a large X has been engraved over the center of the stamp. I have only recorded in the brown issued stamp color and only on booklet stamps. Believed to have been used as a test stamp to perfect the production techniques for this new stamp size/format. Extremely scarce and seldom offered. NH Superb bottom margin single. Perfect!

Scott #Lx1 / Lx2, Facit #6 / 13 [1856/1862 "LOKALBREF" non-denominated 1 skilling / 3 öre] 1930 Officially authorized reprint / blackprint "proof impression" in black. Mentioned in the Facit catalog, but not formally listed. Full-sheet impressions were made to create reference material that philatelists could use to study the cliche varieties and positions. They are not "proofs" as such, but they are very similar, made from the actual plate, and were officially authorized. Black on thick yellowish card stock, imperforate. SINGLE.

Royal Air Defense Society ("Riks Luftskydds Förbundet") 10 öre in red, blue, and black. Soldier holding shield against formation of airplanes. Denomination and text in white. Small format, design 17 x 22 mm. Perforation 11. NH VF SHEET OF 50 (10 columns x 5 rows). Has irrelevant small ink stain on lower right corner of selvage; otherwise perfect quality. In 38 years I can only recall seeing one or two mint with-gum singles of this label, perhaps 5-10 no-gum singles, and one or two canceled singles. I do not recall ever seeing an example on cover (untied or tied). If I had a NH VF single of this label, I would price it at $5, making the break-up value of this sheet $250! And I certainly have never seen anything as stunning as this sheet! An important Swedish WWII-era artifact that helps illustrate one of the reasons why the Germans bypassed Sweden.

200 kr Blue. Used F-VF+ on piece with 20 kronor of previous "1895" design (the earlier design was in use into the 1960s). The very faint cancellation date appears to be 1968, the year of issue of the Slania-design issue and an appropriate date for such a combination. Despite an expected transition period from one design to the other, I can only recall seeing a couple examples of such combinations. Scarce!

1949 March 4 souvenir card of "Nordiska Postkonferensen i Stockholm" (Nordic Postal Congress in Stockholm; the precursor to the current "Norden" organization which is also considered a forerunner to Europa) Middag (mid day meal) luncheon menu. Franked with Sweden Scott #66 [1903 5 kr Stockholm Post Office] and #C8c [1942 20 kr Swans airmail, Perf 4-sides] canceled 4 March 1949. The card lists the delegates: the top executives of the Nordic post offices and airlines. The card was officially printed by the Swedish post offices. This example is the only one I have seen or recorded in 33 years. A rare item; probably few more than 37 (the number of delegates) originally existed -- perhaps less than 5 may still exist today and most of those may be in postal archives.

Stockholmia 1974 souvenir card with five Swedish test stamps (provfrimärken) affixed, one from each of five stamp engravers: "Womans head, Miranda from The Tempest by Shakespeare" coil stamp in green, engraved by Sven Ewert; "Uppsala Cathedral" coil stamp in blue, by Czeslaw Slania; "Snurra" (rotating design) multi-colored coil stamp by Majvor Franzén; "Head with Background (geometric shapes)" coil stamp in magenta by Albert Jorpes; and "The Drottningholm Theater" coil stamp in brown by Zlatko Jakus. All five stamps are on various types of fluorescent paper. All five stamps, as coil versions, were only released to the public on this souvenir card; these coil versions are different stamps than other-format stamps sometimes seen. This card exists on greenish gray whitish fluorescent or brownish gray non-fluorescent stock. Versions of this souvenir card exist with the Miranda stamp in either blue or green; this version bears the GREEN MIRANDA stamp and is GREENISH GRAY WHITISH FLUORESCENT CARD STOCK.

1943 NH VF single "HJÄLP NORDENS BARN" (Help Nordic Children) WWII-era charity seal, officially issued, with the royal monogram, by the government telegraph department promoting the use of telegraph form Lx85. The fee for that telegraph form (which could be specified by the sender of the telegram) included a small amount of money that was directed to this charitable purpose. This officially issued charity seal is thus somewhat similar to semi-postal stamps. This seal is seldom offered, especially in such nice quality. [Beautifully illustrated telegraph forms are also in stock and available on approval.]
