2 Blue, Thin Paper (Scott Classic 2a) [1855 4 sk First Issue Coat of Arms] Mint, without gum, with Average-Fine centering. The paper is slightly aged and there is a small tear at upper right, but this is reasonable looking example of a stamp that is rare in Unused condition. There are no repairs. This is Facit #2a1 from the first July 1855 printings -- a first printing from the first Swedish stamp issues. The Sweden Skilling Banco stamps (Scott #1-5) are extremely rare with gum and are not expected to have gum. Both Facit and Scott only value these stamps without gum. Facit Classic 2024 SEK 14,000 (4/2024 US$1400) for this printing and as the least costly printing.

4 (Scott Classic #4f), Facit #4f Dull Yellow [1855 8 sk First Issue Coat of Arms] Mint, without gum, with Fine centering (by American standards). A wonderful example with strong, clear color and perfect perforations. This is excellent centering for a Mint example of this stamp -- it is rare in Unused condition. [There is a little bit of confusion in the catalog listings for this Facit/Scott #4f. Facit lists this as part of the "medium thick paper" stamps, and Scott has followed upon that distinction. However, most experienced collectors would probably classify this example of the stamp as being on (very) thin paper. One could consider this example to be a thin paper variety of #4f. Furthermore, there are several errors in the Scott values for the different Mint colors/printings of this stamp: Scott should have only three of the eight (not six of the eight) with Mint values, as Facit does -- the others are too rare to value -- and Scott should have them all priced at around the same values of about $5000-5500. I have reported these problems to Scott editors.] The Sweden Skilling Banco stamps (Scott #1-5) are extremely rare with gum and are not expected to have gum. Both Facit and Scott only value these stamps without gum. Facit Classic 2024 value is SEK 50,000 (4/2024 about US$5000) for this printing and as the least costly printing. Accompanied by a Helena Obermüller-Wilén (HOW) 1990 color photo certificate which states [translated] "Facit #4f. Dull Yellow. Centering medium-good. Unused without gum; should not have [not normally found with] gum. Stamp is genuine. No defects. No repairs. A remarkably beautiful and fresh stamp that occurs only rarely uncanceled. Signed by Sjöman. Very good example." HOW assigned a Swedish quality rating of "3,3,-" [the dash because it is without gum], which is excellent for this stamp. HOW is still the best certificate for these issues. Also pencil-signed and numbered on the reverse by Sjöman and accompanied by a photocopy of a Sjöman 1971 certificate. I believe that this certificate copy was obtained from an archive of Sjöman-issued certificates. Sjöman agreed in all respects with the HOW opinion and stated [translated] "A very beautiful and rare object." and using the 1971 SFF quality rating system he said, "A very good example almost to [praktex] magnificent example." From the Haggstrom collection. An outstanding example of a stamp that is only rarely available in Unused / Mint condition.

5 (Scott Classic #5a), Facit #5b Orange-Red, Thin Paper [1855 24 sk First Issue Coat of Arms] Mint, without gum, with VF centering. A wonderful example with strong, clear color and overall freshness. The perforations look a little rough, but this is typical of the so-called 1855 perforation machine and is not a defect. [The "1855 perforations" are almost always rough due to the worn-out teeth on the machine.] This is excellent centering for a Mint example of this stamp -- it is rare in Unused condition. [There is a little bit of confusion in the catalog listings for this Facit #5a / Scott #5b: There are several errors in the Scott values for the different Mint colors/printings of this stamp: Scott should have only two of the five (not four of the five) with Mint values, as Facit does -- the others are too rare to value -- and Scott should have them all priced at around $9000 for Scott #5 and $7500 for #5a. I have reported these problems to Scott editors.] The Sweden Skilling Banco stamps (Scott #1-5) are extremely rare with gum and are not expected to have gum. Both Facit and Scott only value these stamps without gum. Facit Classic 2024 value is SEK 75,000 (4/2024 about US$7500) for this printing. Accompanied by a Helena Obermüller-Wilén (HOW) 1990 color photo certificate which states [in English] "Facit #5b. Orange-Red. Medium centering. Unused without gum. Shall never have gum [not normally found with gum]. The stamp is genuine. Defects: One corner is slightly creased and with a short perf. No repairs. A very beautiful and rare item. As unused a rare item. Fine copy." HOW assigned a Swedish quality rating of "1,3,-". [The 1 because of the mentioned perforation tooth, which most collectors would not consider a problem on an 1855-perforation stamp; the dash because it is without gum.]. In this context, the statement that this is a "Fine copy" is intended as positive compliment. HOW is still the best certificate for these issues. From the Haggstrom collection. An outstanding example -- with exceptionally nice centering -- of a stamp that is only rarely available in Unused / Mint condition.

Scott #144, Facit #151Ccx [1920 20 öre blue Gustaf V Full Face, Perforated 4 sides, WAVY-LINE WATERMARK] Mint, original gum only modestly hinged, with F-VF centering. The watermark is clearly visible without watermark fluid, and is even clearer with fluid (and there are NO problems shown in fluid). This stamp is always centered to the top in the manner of this example, but this example is at least as good or better centered than the other examples I have been able to offer. One of the four rarest "post classic" Mint stamps of Sweden (the others being Scott #189, 189A, and C4; the order of rarest-first is 189A, 144, 189, C4). Approximately only 30 examples are believed to exist, all in Unused condition. This stamp is so seldom offered, even at auction, that the Facit Catalog does not list a catalog value -- this from one of the value editors of Facit! It has been more than 15 years since I was last able to offer an example, but since my start in 1973 this is the only the fourth time I have been able to offer an example. The other three times the stamps sold very quickly at prices between $6500 and $7500, depending upon centering and currency exchange rates at the time. This example is from the John A. Haggstrom collection; he noted that he purchased it in October 1990 from famed Swedish dealer and expert Rolf Gummesson. The reverse is pencil signed "RG" by Gummesson, as was his practice on such stamps. Accompanied by a 2024 Jay Smith color image certificate with "lifetime guarantee". If you wish to (yourself) obtain an additional certificate, from an prior-agreed-upon qualified expert, within six months of purchasing this stamp, in addition to refunding the price paid for the stamp if it is returned to me, I will additionally pay the cost of such certificate if that certificate does not agree with my description (and the certificate is provided to me with the stamp), other than in regard to the terminology used to describe the centering. The currency exchange rate is currently quite favorable to American buyers, thus I am able to offer this uber-rare stamp at a very attractive price, especially considering that this is the best-centered example I have been able to offer in 50 years! Payment arrangements are possible.

Scott #C4, Facit #137vm-crown [1920 20 öre Blue Surcharge on 2 öre Official, AIRMAIL, with CROWN WATERMARK] Mint, original gum very lightly hinged, with F-VF centering. The crown watermark is clearly visible without watermark fluid, and is even clearer with fluid (and there are NO problems shown in fluid). This example is fairly well centered for this item -- only one sheet of 100 originally existed. One of the four rarest "post classic" Mint stamps of Sweden (the others being Scott #144, 189, and 189A; the order of rarest-first is 189A, 144, 189, C4). Of the single sheet of 100 originally released, perhaps 75-80 examples have survived for 104 years. All but four surviving examples are in Unused condition, virtually all Hinged. Three examples are recorded by Facit in Used condition, however, it is likely that those were canceled to order. This stamp is very seldom offered, even at auction. It has been more than 15 years since I was last able to offer an example, but since my start in 1973 this is the only the fourth time I have been able to offer an example. The other three times the stamps (also Hinged) sold very quickly at prices between $2000 and $3000, depending upon centering and currency exchange rates at the time. This example is from the John A. Haggstrom collection; he noted that he purchased it in June 1990, for $2375, from famed Swedish dealer and expert Rolf Gummesson. The reverse bears the well-known boxed "HW" expert handstamp of Harry Wennberg (1872-1927) and his company; the premier Swedish dealer of the 1910s-1927, and then his firm continued following his death. [For a fascinating article with much information about Harry Wennberg, see this important Stockholmia 2019 article.] The reverse also bears an additional penciled signature, that I cannot read, but has the look of an expert signature. [If you know the signature, please tell me.] Accompanied by a 1990 Helena Obermüller Wilén (HOW) color photo certificate; the best certificate of the time and I believe still now. HOW states (translated) "Unused with original gum. The stamp is genuine. No defects. No repairs. A very beautiful example of a very rare stamp. Very good Example." The term "very good" is a high compliment by HOW. HOW gave a Swedish quality rating of 3,3,4 which is excellent for this stamp. The currency exchange rate is currently quite favorable to American buyers, thus I am able to offer this uber-rare stamp at a very attractive price, especially considering that this is only the fourth time in 50 years that I have been able to offer this rare airmail stamp that is in very strong demand both from collectors of Sweden and of Airmails. Payment arrangements are possible.

Scott #C5, Facit #138vm-crown [1920 50 öre Blue Surcharge on 4 öre Official, AIRMAIL, with CROWN WATERMARK] Mint, original gum hinged with small hinge remnant, with F-VF centering. The crown watermark is clearly visible without watermark fluid, and is even clearer with fluid (and there are NO problems shown in fluid). This stamp is perhaps the scarcest of the Scandinavian airmail stamps that is priced low enough to be accessible to many collectors. That being said, it is quite hard to obtain and always sells quickly when it is found. This example is from the John A. Haggstrom collection. The reverse bears five owners or experts marks. One of the owners marks is prominent and dark, but it was put on the hinge remnant so as to not affect the paper of the stamp itself. Accompanied by a 2024 Jay Smith color image certificate with "lifetime guarantee". An attractive example of a scarce stamp that is missing from most Swedish collections!

22 Greenish Blue on Yellowish Paper [1872 12 öre Ringtype, Perf 14] Mint, original gum modestly hinged, with SUPERB centering. Very fresh appearance, with perfect perforations, and brilliant color. The colors of this stamp are difficult to sort out, but this is very likely Facit #22f (greenish blue on yellowish paper) -- which is one of the scarcest colors/printings (Facit Classic 2024 SEK 6,000), but I have priced it, adjusted for the Superb centering, as the most common color/printing (Facit Classic 2024 SEK 2,200). This "workhorse" stamp is extremely hard to find in Mint condition with such wonderful centering! From the Haggstrom collection.

Scott #6 Light Yellow Green, Facit #7f [1858 5 öre green Coat of Arms (1872 printing)] NEVER HINGED with VF centering, perfect perforations, perfect NH gum, and wonderful color and freshness. Accompanied by a 1982 Franz Obermüller b/w photo certificate -- the premier certificate at that time and still very highly respected today. The certificate states (translated): "Unused with original gum. Genuine. No repairs. No defects. No improvements. Very beautiful, clean, and fresh, "Posfriskt **" (Post office fresh ** never hinged). "Praktexemplar" (magnificent example)." FO assigned it a grading of 4,5,5 -- which is exceptional for this stamp. Mint Hinged examples of this stamp are quite scarce with original gum and nice centering. However, NH examples this nice are "rare". Most recently this stamp was in the John A. Haggstrom collection. (The Facit 2024 Catalog prices NH examples at SEK 5000 and Praktexemplar NH examples at SEK 7500.)

Scott #37, Facit #37 [1877 En Riksdaler Perforation 13 Ring Type] NEVER HINGED BLOCK OF FOUR with VF centering, perfect perforations, bright color, perfect never hinged gum, and wonderful freshness. The block has never been folded; the perforations are very strong; there are no separations. Accompanied by a 2002 Helena Obermüller Wilén "HOW" color certificate stating (in English [sic]): "Unused with original gum. Never hinged (**). The stamps are genuine and forms a bloc of four. No faults. No repairs. A very fresh and nice bloc of an unusual stamp. Very fine - Extra fine quality." HOW is the premier certificate to have for this stamp. I am amused that HOW referred to (singles of) this stamp as "unusual". This is the rarest regularly-issued stamp of this era! In NH condition, SINGLES of this stamp have a Facit 2024 value of SEK 45,000. Facit does not provide any price information for NH blocks of this stamp, but for Hinged 4-blocks Facit states a value of "5x" the single stamp value (which surely does not adequately reflect their rarity). Applying the same standard and NOT adding any further block-premium for NH condition, one can extrapolate a Facit value of at least SEK 225,000 or around US$ 22,500 for this block. This would certainly be a key showpiece in a collection or exhibit of this series. Most recently this stamp was in the John A. Haggstrom collection; he acquired it in 2003 Nutmeg auction of a wonderful Sweden collection. In 50 years, I have never been able to offer a NH single of this stamp, to say nothing of a block! An extraordinary showpiece of outstanding quality and rarity.

Scott #1, Facit #1c Blue Green, Thin Paper [1855 3 Skilling Banco] THE FIRST STAMP OF SWEDEN. Mint, without gum as always, with Fine centering and perforations that must be considered to be perfect on this stamp. This color is, by a small amount, the least costly (Facit 2024 SEK 90,000) of the three colors listed by Facit. Furthermore, Facit only prices this color in Mint. All catalogs only value the Mint stamps of the Sweden #1-5 as without gum. Accompanied by a 2002 Helena Obermüller Wilén "HOW" color certificate stating (translated): "Unused without gum. This stamp does not exist with original gum. Stamp is genuine. No defects. No repairs. A very beautiful and fresh example of a very rare stamp." HOW has assigned a quality rating of "3,3,(-)" [the "-" is the lack of gum] -- this is an extraordinary quality rating for this stamp. HOW is the premier certificate to have for the skilling banco stamps. The stamp is also accompanied by a 1960 certificate from the Friedl Expert Committee, which is signed by both legendary gentleman, Herbert Block and Edwin Mueller; the stamp is signed on reverse in pencil by Bloch, as was his custom (and the certificate states this fact and also repeats that penciled signature). The picture on that Friedl certificate (it is embossed to the certificate) has been taken from an auction catalog; I strongly expect that the photo would be from one of the venerable Mercury Stamp Company auction sales -- which were operated by Bloch and Mueller. Most recently this stamp was in the John A. Haggstrom collection. An outstanding example, with wonderful color, and without any defects. This is the nicest Mint example I have had of this stamp in 50 years. [Layaway payment terms can be arranged for this item.]

Scott #1, Facit #1b Bluish Green, Thin Paper [1855 3 Skilling Banco] THE FIRST STAMP OF SWEDEN. Used with VF centering, which is extraordinarily nice for this stamp. The cancellation is extremely light, but is the rectangular style that was still in use at the time that this stamp was issued. The cancellation is clearly dated 21 June, but the year is not visible. Since the stamp was issued 1 July 1855, this cancellation must be from 1856 or later. [The town name consists of at least 5 or 6 letters, and up to 8 letters. The second letter appears to be (A or Ä or Å) and is directly above the 8 of 18. The total width of the rectangle is "medium". Based on the position of the "A", the overall length, the rectangular postmarks still in use, and my interpretation of the other faint letters, there are 10 possible town names this could be. My best guess is DALARÖ, however, the other possibilities are: BÅSTAD, GAGNEF, HALMSTAD, LAHOLM, MALUGN, SÄTHER, WADSTENA, WARBERG, and WAXHOLM.] Accompanied by a 1991 Helena Obermüller Wilén "HOW" color certificate stating (translated): "Stamp is genuine. No defects. No repairs. A beautiful and fresh example with good centering. Good example." HOW has assigned a quality rating of "2,4,1" [the "1" is the lightness of the cancellation -- which some people would consider to be wonderful, but not for a collector of cancellations]. In my experience this is an extraordinary quality rating for this stamp, especially the "4" for the centering. HOW is the premier certificate to have for the skilling banco stamps. The stamp is also pencil signed (as was his custom) by the legendary expert Sjöman with "20920" indicating that he must have prepared a written certificate for it (but that certificate is not present). Most recently this stamp was in the John A. Haggstrom collection. The 2024 Facit value is SEK 50,000 however I believe that this quality is above the Facit standard for that valuation level. An outstanding example, with wonderful color, and without any defects. I believe that this is the best centered and most lightly canceled example that I have had of this stamp in 50 years. Scott #15, Facit #15c [1869 17 öre BLUISH GRAY Reclining Lion] Used with VF centering and neat NYKÖPING 25 November 1871 cancellation. NO defects of any sort. Completely genuine. "No excuses!" Accompanied by a 1986 Helena Obermüller Wilén "HOW" color certificate stating (translated): "Stamp is genuine. No defects. No repairs. A beautiful and fresh example. Praktexemplar." HOW has assigned a quality rating of "4,4,3-4" which, in my experience, is an very high rating for this scarce stamp. Furthermore the term "Praktexemplar", which translates to "magnificent example" was seldom used by HOW. HOW is the premier certificate to have for this stamp. The "normal" Facit 2024 value for this stamp is SEK 6500, however, Facit prices "Praktexemplar" at SEK 14,000!!! Most recently this stamp was in the John A. Haggstrom collection. The vast majority of examples of Scott #15 offered these days are either defective, altered/faked, or repaired, or are just not pretty. This example is well centered, nicely canceled, and has exceptionally fresh color. Truly nice examples such as this are quite hard to find! I believe that this example has the nicest color of all the Used examples of this stamp that I have had in 50 years.

Scott #90 and #92, Facit #92 and 94 [1918 55 and 80 öre Gustav V in Round Frame] THE RAREST POST-CLASSICAL STAMPS OF SWEDEN. These stamps were prepared for use, however due to a change in postal rates, they were never fully distributed. However, the town of VÄRNAMO received a delivery of these stamps and started selling them on 2 July 1918. It is estimated that a total of about 50 stamps were sold for use on money orders and parcel cards, however, a small additional number are known used by philatelists on covers. In the 1920s philatelists had a few examples canceled in Värnamo, with a 1918 date, using the genuine cancellation device (they were valid for postage). When the unintended release of these stamps was discovered, the remaining quantity was recalled by the post office. The post office, through their postal museum, used some of these rare stamps in trades with other similar institutions and to obtain stamps needed by the postal museum. All remaining stamps were finally destroyed in 1985. The SET OF TWO STAMPS, on small pieces of envelopes, with Superb strikes of the double-circle VÄRNAMO town cancellation, dated 6 July and 13 July respectively. The 55 öre stamp is a left margin example. Both have F-VF centering and are without any defects. An extraordinary set of the rarest Swedish stamps from the post-classical era. I estimate that at most a few dozen Used sets of these stamps can exist. Accompanied by a 1978 certificate (no pictures) for the set, issued by Einar Lundström, then the director of Frimärkshuset (then one of the largest Swedish dealers and the publisher of the Facit Catalogs). He lightly initialed in pencil on the reverse lower right corners of the stamps (due to the colored background of the backsides of the envelope pieces, the initial is only visible under magnification). More importantly, each of the stamps is individually accompanied by a 1989 Helena Obermüller Wilén "HOW" color certificate stating (translated): "The envelope piece, stamp and cancellation is genuine and belong together. No defects. No repairs. A very beautiful and rare object." For the 55 öre stamp, HOW has assigned a quality rating of "3,3,4"; for the 80 öre stamp, HOW assigned "3,3,5". In my experience these are excellent quality ratings for these stamps, especially the "4" and "5" for the cancellation. HOW is the premier certificate to have for the these two stamps. This set was most recently in the collection of John A. Haggstrom; he purchased the set in 1992 from Frimärkshuset. The 2024 Facit value FOR THE SET is SEK 130,000. An outstanding set, with wonderful color, wonderful cancellations, and excellent overall quality without any defects. I believe that this is the nicest Used set of these stamps that I have had in 50 years. [Layaway payment terms can be arranged for this item.]

Scott #189, Facit #175Acx Wavy-Line Watermark [1922 15 öre violet Gustaf V, Left Profile, with Wavy-Line Watermark] NEVER HINGED with VF centering, and with excellent perforations. Wonderfully fresh and bright. An extremely scarce stamp in Never Hinged condition, and especially with such nice centering and perforations. The stamp is pencil signed (as was his custom) by the legendary Swedish expert Sjöman. Most recently this stamp was in the John A. Haggstrom collection; he noted that he purchased this stamp from the legendary and expert firm of Rolf Gummesson. Accompanied by a 1989 certificate by current and still active expert Karl A. Norsten. Also accompanied by a 2024 Jay Smith color image certificate with "lifetime guarantee". There are only a few Mint examples of this stamp extant, and perhaps only a half-dozen (?) that are still Never Hinged. The Facit 2024 value for Mint Hinged is SEK 33,000 and for (this) Never Hinged condition it is SEK 75,000. This is the nicest Mint example, and the only NH example, of this stamp that I have had in 50 years. [Layaway payment terms can be arranged for this item.]

1387 STRIP OF FIVE [1981 1.35 kr NOBEL, Albert Einstein] Coil 5-strip POSTALLY USED with VF centering. I know this to be postally used because it was used on a large package sent to me years ago. Collecting Swedish coil stamps in strips of five has been done in Sweden since the 1920s. However, collecting postally used 5-strips has always been a great challenge because 5-strips are seldom used on mail and when they are, they are often damaged in handling. Excellent quality. Such postally used strips are rarely offered.

211 [1924 5 kr UPU Congress] Mint, modestly hinged, with VF-XF centering, but with a light crease at the top (only visible from the reverse). This example shows a plate join line on the top perforation tips along with slightly blunted perforation tips as is usually associated with these pane-edge stamps. Plate join lines on the UPU Congress and UPU Anniversary issues are quite interesting. They were printed on the rotary Stickney printing press -- the same type of printing press that was used in the USA used in that time period. The printing cylinder for the UPU stamps consisted of two half-cylinder 40-stamp printing plates; The plate join lines occur in the two locations where those two plates meet. Though remnants of the plate join line can appear on the perforation tips of both previously-joined stamps, often, because of poor placement of the perforations (poor centering), the plate join line is only visible on the perforations of one of the two previously-joined stamps. This fact, combined with reperforation to remove remnants of the line or collectors having used up such stamps for postage instead of collecting them, has resulted in the plate join line examples now being somewhat hard to find. In the definitive work "Postage Stamps of Sweden 1920-1945" by Menzinsky (1946), published by the Swedish post office, the author states that only one (half-cylinder) plate was made for each stamp, respectively in the Congress issue and the Anniversary issue, and that, for each denomination (thus each color), those two half-cylinder plates (of the two different stamp issues) were mounted on the one printing cylinder, thus each full revolution of the printing cylinder produced 40 of each of the two different stamps of a particular color / denomination. The web containing the sheets of the two different stamps was then manually separated, by tearing, into panes along the perforations at the plate join line, often resulting in slightly blunted perforations. Thus, while there maybe combination pairs existing in the Swedish Postal Museum, no such pairs are available to collectors. Because of this printing / plate layout, the horizontal-format stamps (öre denominations) cannot exist with sheet margin selvage on the left or right sides. Likewise, the vertical-format stamps (kroner denominations) cannot exist with sheet margin selvage at the top or bottom. For every denomination of both stamp issues, examples with plate join line exist on both left and right sides of the öre denominations and both top and bottom of the kroner denominations. A comprehensive specialized collection could thus include examples of both for each stamp. [A MYSTERY YET TO BE ADDRESSED IS: Since each half of the printing cylinder resulted in printing stamps of the two different issues, Congress and Anniversary, WHY ARE THE ISSUE QUANTITIES SOMETIMES SIGNIFICANTLY DIFFERENT for the two same-denomination stamps of the two different issues? Were both printed in the same quantities but many stamps were later destroyed?] Great color, excellent perforations on three sides, plus the usual perfs along the line at top, and very fresh appearance. Otherwise would be $210 for this centering!

Sweden Scott #1585-8 (1588a) ALL ENGRAVING MISSING ERROR [January 1986 Stockholmia 86 "Stamp Collecting" and "NEW SWEDEN"; JOINT ISSUE WITH UNITED STATES Scott #2198-2201] NH VF complete booklet. All the offset printing is present, but ALL THE ENGRAVING PRINTING IS MISSING (and is NOT albino). Engraved by Sjööblom (#1585-6, 1588), Masure and Hipschen (#1587 which is the shared / common design with the U.S. stamp). Hipschen was a well-known engraver of U.S. stamps; Masure had done engraving of lettering on several U.S. stamps. Any type of error is "rare" on the tightly-controlled Swedish stamps, but this one is particularly spectacular. The cause of the error is likely that at the time this part of the web paper passed through the printing press, the engraved printing cylinders (which were after the lithograph cylinders) were not yet engaged (thus there was no engraved impression at all, not even an albino impression). The booklet-making process is closely integrated with the printing process, thus the quality control inspectors must have missed the small section of printing that was made into booklets before the web of paper was turned into booklets. Due to the web-press nature of the production, an example of an error such as this is not unique, however, I have only seen a few examples offered in the market since it was discovered (which I think was in the late 1980s). [The website illustration also shows, and this offer includes, a properly printed example.] In addition to being a scarce type of error from Sweden, this is a KEY ITEM for a collection of Sweden and/or U.S. related JOINT ISSUES. Furthermore, the New Sweden thematic is one of the most popular Swedish-related topical collections. An outstanding item!

Sweden Scott #(2715 FOOTNOTED "Flags" VERSION), Facit #BL38v [2013 Table Tennis souvenir sheet SPECIAL VERSION WITH FLAGS BACKGROUND; JOINT ISSUE WITH PRC-CHINA Scott #4152-4153] CANCELED VF souvenir sheet. This special version of the souvenir sheet has the same two stamps as the regular souvenir sheet, but the rest of the souvenir sheet (picturing the flags of both countries) is completely different. This was a special item prepared by Sweden for very limited distribution to officials and diplomats connected with a major 2013 stamp show in China. While the quantity printed is not known to me, it is believed to be very small (a couple hundred to a few hundred at most) and the distribution was extremely limited and controlled. To the best of my knowledge, all examples that have come to the market have come, one at a time, from the original recipients -- I am not aware of any existing "stock" of these! When this issue became known, it was the subject of controversy and discussion in Sweden, but until recently it has been very little known outside of Sweden. Other than a picture in Facit and a couple illustrations in the philatelic press -- overlooked by most collectors -- the vast majority of collectors have never seen this item, if they have ever even heard of it. Virtually all known examples are Mint (NH). The listing in Facit includes a Used price, however, I had never seen or heard of a Canceled example until November 2023. This example bears a Swedish "LUND / POSTNORD" 2 September 2019 cancellation; surely a favor cancellation. As December 2023, of I have only been able to offer one other example (in October 2023; it is NH) of this souvenir sheet since the time of issue. Despite the original controversy, this is a genuinely "rare" item that is missing from virtually all Swedish (and Joint Issue and PRC-China related) collections. An outstanding item!

397 FLUORESCENT, Facit #300v1 [1968 Fluorescent Printing of the 1948 1.40 kr dark green 3-Crowns] Used XF on piece of domestic money order card, with fully dated, neat 15 February 1969 cancellation. An unannounced (accidental?) 1968 printing on bright yellow fluorescent (under long-wave UV light) paper. This variety (and also some faintly fluorescent varieties of other stamps) was accidentally discovered around 1978 by a staff member of the Rolf Gummesson stamp dealer firm who was checking some other stamps under UV light and noticed that some unexpected stamps were fluorescent! In 1968-1969 this denomination was needed, as a solo use, for only three purposes. Actually these three rates started 1 January 1967 and ran through 28 February 1969, but the fluorescent stamp was apparently not printed or put into use until mid-late 1968, thus the period of use for it was only a FEW MONTHS. The uses were: 1) Domestic Swedish postal money orders over 10 kr up to a maximum amount of 2000 kroner. The domestic money order forms were usually light brownish in color and bear only Swedish text. 2) Postal money orders to Denmark, Finland, Iceland, and Norway, over 10 kr up to a maximum amount of ?? (believed to again be 2000 kroner). The color and text of such cards has not been recorded by me; this use is very unusual. 3) Foreign postal money orders sent to all other (non-Nordic) countries, up to 250 kr. The Swedish international postal money order forms were usually pink in color and can be identified by the color and especially the text in Swedish and French. The forms sent outside of Sweden were widely distributed. In virtually all cases, the destination post offices usually kept such forms as the receipt for making the payment to the recipient. After a few years, some countries (including Sweden) cut the stamps from money order and parcel cards and sold them as kiloware. The vast majority of known used examples of this fluorescent stamp are from such kiloware (which I believe was not sold until around 1975-1976). Uses of this fluorescent stamp on complete cards is very scarce; I have only seen complete cards used to non-Nordic countries. Uses of this flourescent stamp on a piece of card (i.e. from the kiloware) are scarce because this was not catalog-listed until several years after discovery and even then most collectors who obtained and soaked kiloware were not aware of the existence of this stamp on fluorescent paper. [The supply of mint stamps was long exhausted before this variety was discovered; only by chance might a collector have obtained a mint example (of a 20 year old stamp design) from the post office in 1968.] Rare in mint and quite hard to find Used, and especially undamaged and with nice centering on a piece of card!

397 FLUORESCENT, Facit #300v1 [1968 Fluorescent Printing of the 1948 1.40 kr dark green 3-Crowns] Used Fine on piece of domestic money order card, with fully dated, neat 3 February 1969 cancellation. Facit #M12 [1951/1963 GREEN (shades), Coarse Lines in Crowns, White DULL Paper with printed dashed cutting lines] (M11A-C have 14-15 fine vertical lines in the crowns, whereas M12 has only 7-8 coarse vertical lines in the crowns.) M12 was delivered from the printer in 1951 but was not actually placed into use until 1963. The M12 reply stamp location under the top back flap of the envelope was moved to the left and thus wide-cut examples will show (beyond the cutting line lower right corner) part of the glue line and lower back flap.

289 (Facit #269C) [1939 10 öre Violet Gustav V with Small Numerals, perforated 4-sides] NH VF BLOCK OF FOUR in extremely fresh quality. This bottom margin example shows booklet-mounting staple holes, thus this block came from a booklet and not a sheet. That it has bottom margin means that it was an Inverted position in the booklet. While this is not a "scarce" stamp, it is the key "normal" stamp of this design and blocks are rarely offered. Even single stamp examples are hard to find well centered.

229 Non-White Paper (normal printing) [1931 5 kr Stockholm Royal Palace] Mint, lightly hinged, with Superb centering and excellent perforations. This example shows a plate join line on the left side. Like all the Swedish stamps printed during 1920-1936, this was printed on the rotary Stickney press -- the same type of press used to print U.S. engraved stamps starting in 1914, with the same resulting line pairs -- on which the printing plate consisted of two half cylinders. Ink caught in the plate joints printed as a colored line and provide what we now call line pairs. Single stamps showing the line do not have additional value, but they add interest to a collection. Unusually sharp impression and incredibly fresh. Such well centered examples are seldom offered. This is key a stamp that, in Mint condition, is missing from many collections.

Poland: Scott #4578 [2021 15.30 zl Slania Stamp Engraver, 100th Anniversary of Birth; Joint Issue with Sweden] NH VF souvenir sheet. An engraved design (by three designers and engravers) picturing Slania engraving a stamp die, plus an image of him as a young man and showing his 90 gr "Battle of Grunwald" diploma work "stamp" (not an issued postage stamp). 1 [1855 3 Skilling Banco] FIRST STAMP OF SWEDEN. Used with typical Average-Fine centering, but with expertly made repairs and perforation "improvements" that most people would not be able to detect, except that the overall margin sizes are smaller than they should be. Otherwise this is a completely genuine example, NOT a reprint or forgery. Neat and crisp "CAR..." cancellation, perhaps CARLSKRONA? WONDERFUL BLUE-GREEN COLOR with extremely sharp and clear printing details. The vast majority of #1 on the market are either damaged or repaired (even if not so described). Facit 2023 value for sound examples is SEK 50,000 = about $5000! This is a nice looking example, even if the margins are too small, at a very reasonable price. Accompanied by 2023 Jay Smith certificate with "lifetime guarantee" (details available).

4 (Scott 4e, Facit 4f) [1855 8 Skilling Banco] Yellow Orange with Dense Background and "Thick" (i.e. not thin) Paper. Used with F-VF centering. Bright color and perfect perforations (quite unusual thus). Light rectangular boxed town 18 September 185(7?) cancellation that is likely (HA)LMSTA(D); while the year date is light and the 7 is on the edge of the perforations, I am 98% sure it is 1857. Accompanied by an APS 1998 certificate as #4 "genuine in all respects" (at that time Scott had not yet assigned sub-numbers to the various colors). Also accompanied by a 2023 Jay Smith certificate with "lifetime guarantee" (details available). While most skilling banco stamps in the marketplace have defects or repairs, this is an outstanding example in completely sound quality -- and is very scarce thus.

Sweden Booklets 1970s-1980s-1990s NH VF Half-Price Group: $200 FOR $100: A selection of NH VF "perfect" Swedish Booklets at HALF PRICE. YOU PICK the year range of 1970s and/or 1980s and/or 1990s. If you want a particular range of years, such as "1981-1992" I will ATTEMPT to honor that as best I can. If you select a broad range of years, tell me if you prefer the focus be on generally sending booklets in catalog order OR if you prefer a wide-ranging selection from various years. I WILL PICK WHICH BOOKLETS ARE SENT (within the defined years). For this HALF-PRICE offer, I am NOT able fill specific want lists or special requests for specific types of stamp issues. (I do welcome want lists, but at the normal prices because it is a lot more work.) The quality of all booklets sent will be carefully individually double-checked (but I do not keep any second quality booklets in our stock anyway). There will not be any duplicates (unless you specifically ask for duplicates). THE MINIMUM AMOUNT FOR THIS SPECIAL HALF-PRICE OFFER is $200 at normal prices FOR ONLY $100. However, YOU CAN SPECIFY ANY HIGHER AMOUNT, for example $400 for $200 OR $600 for $300, etc. You can even just tell me to send as many as I can up to a certain spend amount. Furthermore, YOU CAN REPEAT THE ORDER AND YOU WILL NOT RECEIVE DUPLICATION -- the booklets will be sent with an itemized invoice (even though it is an all or nothing lot price), so you will know what you are getting and I will know what you have gotten so that I can avoid sending any duplication if you want to re-order. YOUR SATISFACTION IS GUARANTEED, but it is an all-or nothing deal -- if you do not keep all that are sent, what you do keep will be at the normal prices. TO ORDER you can either just place your order through the shopping cart BUT BE SURE TO USE the Comments section to give your instructions, or you can send an order via normal email. Regardless, be sure to GIVE ME YOUR INSTRUCTIONS: which range(s) of years and how much you wish to spend at half prices (I will send double that amount at normal prices). This is not an approval method -- this is an order which is to be pre-paid. This cannot be combined with any offers or discounts. Shipping cost is additional for this item.

37 [1877 1 RIKSDALER Perforation 13 Ringtype] Used with Average centering, heavily repaired. Somebody did a lot of work on this stamp, not all of it very smart, but the result looks nice. The left side has genuine 13 perforations, thus this has to be a Scott #37. However, the top has been slightly reperforated/improved 13. But the right side is perforated 14. The bottom must have been completely missing because part of a perforation 14 stamp was very expertly joined to it -- this makes no sense because the "doctor" should have transplanted on from a perforation 13 stamp. The cancellation date of 1878 is correct and appropriate for Scott #37. An example with this centering, but without the doctoring, would sell for about $170. This example is offered for a small fraction of that figure.

170 KPV watermark, Facit 2022 #179AeBz = Facit 2020 #179Afbz [1921 20 öre Violet Gustaf V Profile] Used with VF centering. An example of the scarce DULL ULMARISH VIOLET on "B" paper with KPV watermark. The watermark shows "OST"; the position is inverted-reversed (upside down and reading left to right while upside down). There are two possible colors of this stamp -- both of which are very difficult to obtain; the catalog value of the other color is four times the catalog value of this color. The Facit 2022 catalog value of this color is SEK 500, but this example has centering that is much, much better than usual! Excellent appearance, with unusually good perforations, and a complete date. This example is one of three from the same original source, all with the same cancellation, two of which are certainly on the same day. Between the three stamps, the cancellation is confirmed to have the letters FR...IKA (about 7-9 letters total), which can only be FREDRIKA, dated 3 November 1921. This watermark variety is quite "scarce" with such nice centering! [The website image includes a color-comparison sliver of the other color.]

There are two possible colors of this stamp -- both of which are very difficult to obtain; THIS IS THE MUCH SCARCER COLOR, with a catalog value four times that of the other color. The Facit 2022 catalog value of this color is SEK 1500 for a single stamp! Excellent appearance, with unusually good perforations on the left stamp. The text of the cancellation is complete and is confirmed to be BRÄNNLAND, dated 20 December (appears to be 1921). This watermark variety, with this color, is "rare". 206 [1924 50 öre UPU Congress] Mint, lightly hinged, with F-VF centering, but some blunted perforations on right (typical for this issue). This example shows a plate join line on the left side perforation tips. [Plate join lines on the UPU Congress and Anniversary are quite interesting. Printed on the rotary Stickney press -- same as the USA used at that time -- the printing cylinder for the UPU stamps consisted of two half-cylinder 40-stamp printing plates; the plate join lines occur in the two locations that those two plates meet. In the definitive work "Postage Stamps of Sweden 1920-1945" by Menzinsky (1946), published by the Swedish post office, the author states that only one (half-cylinder) plate was made for each stamp, respectively in the Congress issue and the Anniversary issue, and that, for each denomination (thus color), those two half-cylinder plates (of the two different stamp issues) were mounted on the printing cylinder, thus each full revolution of the printing cylinder produced 40 of each of the two different stamps of a particular denomination. The web containing the sheets of the two different stamps was very soon after separated along the perforations at the plate join line, thus while there maybe combination pairs existing in the Swedish Postal Museum, no such pairs are available to collectors. Because of this printing / plate layout, the horizontal-format stamps (öre denominations) cannot exist with sheet margin on the left or right sides. Likewise, the vertical-format stamps (kroner denominations) cannot exist with sheet margins at the top or bottom. For every denomination of both stamp issues, examples with plate join line exist on both left and right sides of the öre denominations and both top and bottom of the kroner denominations. A comprehensive specialized collection could thus include examples of both for each stamp. A MYSTERY YET TO BE ADDRESSED IS: Since each half of the printing cylinder resulted in printing stamps of the two different issues, Congress and Anniversary, WHY ARE THE ISSUE QUANTITIES SOMETIMES SIGNIFICANTLY DIFFERENT for the two same-denomination stamps of the two different issues? Were both printed in the same quantities but many stamps were later destroyed?] Very fresh example, priced very low.

179 WHITE PAPER, Facit #186f (old Facit 186c) on A3 White Paper [1925 30 öre brown Gustaf V left profile, White Paper] Mint, lightly hinged, with VF centering and unusually nice perforations and large margins. [The white paper printings of this era in general started around 1934 and continued into 1938, but Facit does not give a date for this stamp on white paper. Starting with the 2022 edition, the Facit Classic has revised the lettering of the colors and papers of the 1920-1936 definitive stamps, with many new listings. This stamp, previously 186c, is now 186f .] Other than the rare watermarked stamps of this series, this 30 öre brown on white paper is one of the scarcest of the colors / papers. It is very difficult to find well centered and with good perforations. (Facit value SEK 1500 for Hinged.)

247 [1935 60 öre Coil Riksdagen (Parliament) 500th Anniv, Members of the Four Estates] NEVER HINGED coil single with F-VF+ centering. An example from the tail position of the coil roll, with the gummed tail tab (attached to the backside). Without a tab, NH examples of this centering would sell for $30 and Hinged for $10. [Leaders, about 4-6 inches long, had printed text describing the contents of the roll, and wrapped around the outside of the roll to protect the roll. Tails, about 2-3 inches long, usually bore only handstamped initials of the coiling operator or the quality inspector (?). The leaders and tabs, sometimes using a printed color or a colored paper similar to that of the printed stamps, were attached to the backsides of the roll by means of a small perforated tab, as seen on the back of this stamp. In general (when viewing from the front of the stamp), leader tabs are on the left and tail tabs are on the right. To my knowledge all coil rolls were of 100 stamps, thus 2% of production had such a tab on the backside. However, examples with tabs were usually used for postage rather than being saved by collectors, thus they are quite unusual nowadays, though not costly. Examples with full tails are scarce because they were usually not saved. Examples with full leaders are much scarcer than tails because they were usually heavily damaged when opening the roll (they were glued to themselves) in addition to not being saved. They are an interesting artifact of how the stamps were produced.]

This example is interesting because, under oblique lighting, the backside shows a very strong "wire marking" pattern resulting from the screen used in the paper making process. This pattern is always present (at least under magnification) but is seldom so clear as this example. A complete sound quality example with nice color and excellent perforations.

76 [1911 25 öre Oscar, Engraved, UNWATERMARKED] Used with F-VF centering and pleasing 30 October 1911 "SÖDERH..." cancellation (likely SÖDERHAMN). This 25 öre stamp on UNwatermarked paper was issued 3 May 1911, thus examples canceled after that date are sought after as being "somewhat confirming on the face" of the likely lack of watermark. While a cancel after the issue date is not proof positive that there is no watermark, the watermarked stamp (Scott #61) is very uncommon used that late. In addition to the lack of watermark on Scott #75-76, the paper texture is slightly different as well. An attractive example -- such nicely canceled examples are hard to find.

127, Facit Classic 2022 #148Ca-Agry [1921 10 öre green Lion, Perfed 4-Sides] Mint BLOCK OF FOUR with Fine+ centering, BOTTOM TWO STAMPS NEVER HINGED, top stamps lightly hinged. The Agry paper is the most usually seen of the four unwatermarked. Though this does not appear to be the rare Av paper that exists for Scott #127, the color of this block is much more like the "Green, Clean Color" that is found on the Av paper -- not the more typical Dull Yellowish Green on A1 and Agry papers. An unusual color. Wonderfully fresh with crisp and clear engraving impression. Blocks of the Perf-4-Side Lions are getting hard to find. The Facit Classic 2022 value for NH singles (this is the lowest-cost listing) is SEK 250 EACH and 80 EACH for the hinged stamps, thus a Facit total of SEK 660 as singles!

127, Facit Classic 2022 #148Ca-Agry [1921 10 öre green Lion, Perfed 4-Sides] NEVER HINGED with F-VF+ centering, "Broken Pair" of STAMPS THAT APPEAR TO BE FROM AN EXTREMELY SCARCE BOOKLET, Facit #H15 (lowest price version of complete booklet is SEK 5000). The perforations of the two stamps exactly "mate". Both have bottom margin (thus would be from an inverted booklet pane) and both have a single staple hole that would be correct for the pair of staple holes in the margin of a booklet pane. Because such an item is not easily recognized and appreciated for what it is, the value is not high, but at the same time, it is likely that VERY FEW SUCH PAIRS EXIST (even if broken) to prove that they came from the rare booklet. (These came to me exactly as you see them -- I did not break them!) Wonderfully fresh and attractive. Even as two (least costly color/paper) single stamps, they have a Facit Classic 2022 value of SEK 250 EACH. A very special item for the specialist who understands what it is!

Each with two full (very obvious) letters of the KPV watermark. This example is particularly unusual as the color is a fairly bright/light yellow-green -- not listed in the catalogs -- instead of the usual darker/bluish green found on the KPV ("B" paper) stamps. Very nice -- and scarce -- multiple, even without taking into consideration the very unusual color. Used multiples of any versions of the 10 öre perf-4-side stamps are fairly unusual. Even as a single, and even without considering the scarce color, this is a scarce stamp missing from most collections in any condition or quality! (It is possible that this is only on the left stamp, and not on the right stamp, because the watermarks were spaced fairly far apart and also exist in four possible reading positions.) Very scarce multiple; Used multiples of any versions of the 10 öre perf-4-side stamps are fairly unusual. 130, Facit #140C-Cx [1920 5 öre bluish green Lion, Perfed 4-Sides, Watermarked Wavy-Lines, Type I] Used with XF-Superb centering, much nicer than usual perforations, and almost perfectly centered VÄSTERÅS 21 April 1921 cancellation. (This watermarked stamp is always Stamp Type I.) Despite the fairly modest catalog value (Facit 2022 SEK 300) of this stamp, it can be quite hard to find (in any condition or quality) and is often still on want lists along with stamps that are valued hundreds of dollars more! This stamp is usually very poorly centered (often with the perforations cutting the design) and it is also quite scarce with a well-centered cancellation. This example is "rare" both in terms of centering and the well-centered cancellation. As a demonstration of this "rarity", the Facit 2022 value for "praktexemplar" ("extra fine") is SEK 1000. At a well-presented auction, it could even go higher. This is "rare" quality!

164 KPV Watermark, Facit #152A bz [1920 20 öre Gustav II Adolf, Coil, NOT wavy-line watermark] Used with VF centering and almost complete OXELÖSUND 13 January 1921 cancellation (fairly scarce). Large portion of letters watermark. Appears to be the Greenish Dark Blue color (Facit 152Af bz). This stamp issue did not see a lot of use in small towns and villages. Nicely canceled small-town examples of the KPV watermark are quite unusual.

Typical small part of letter watermark showing. This stamp is scarce and is missing even from many specialized collections (or has the wrong stamp in its place). 264 Plate Variety, Facit #259Av1 P1 [1938 15 öre Emanuel Swedenborg (theologian and scientist)] NEVER HINGED 3-strip with XF centering and obvious plate variety "line in top margin above 10". The variety is nicely positioned in the center of the 3-strip. Examples of this variety are amazingly hard to find considering the modest (SEK +200) Facit 2021 value, especially in NH and with such nice centering. In my experience, the plate varieties of this stamp are quite undervalued.

Denmark Scott #35 [1882 5 øre Arms with Small Corner Numerals, Perf 14 x 13.5] Used with F-VF+ centering and neat SWEDISH RAILWAY cancellation (likely resulting from Danish-Swedish railway-ferry traffic), but with tiny thin spot. Very attractive example, with great dark yellow-green color, clearly showing the features of this Small Corner Numerals stamp (including the gap between the oval and top and bottom frame lines). A scarcer stamp that would otherwise be $100 with this centering, with a normal cancellation. An unusual example!

2, 1868 Official Reprint. [1855 4 skilling banco blue Coat of Arms] Mint F-VF centered example, but gum that is either disturbed (probably) or regummed. These are typically found without gum. Lower left corner perforation tooth rounded and two very slightly shorter perforation teeth. This is Type "g" (of the nine types of the 4 sk reprints). There were two reprintings in 1868; they differ only very slightly in appearance and are hard to separate. Between the two printings, a total of 1885 reprints were printed, of those only 209 were Type "g". Assuming the more common of the two 1868 reprintings, the Facit 2020 value is SEK 4000! LX2, Facit #13a [1862 non-denominated (3 öre) olive brown "Local"] Used Fine+ with neat, light Stockholm local delivery (which was the primary purpose of this stamp) cancellation. This example has slightly less white paper than some, but that is typical variation of the handmade paper still in use at that time. The perforations are just slightly irregular as they should be; the so-called "1855" perforator tool was becoming worn out and was not replaced until 1865. Most examples of this stamp are either defective and/or repaired, but this example is completely sound. Especially nice with such a light cancellation. Facit 2020 value SEK 4000!

LX2, Facit #13a [1862 non-denominated (3 öre) olive brown "Local"] Mint F-VF, but without gum and with a very small thin spot at top center. This example is unusually fresh looking with white, high quality paper -- unusual for the handmade paper still in use at that time. The perforations are unusually nice and NOT as irregular as usual, but they are still made by the correct so-called "1855" perforator tool that was becoming worn out and was not replaced until 1865. (The perforation 14 reprints were made in 1871 with the new, better "1865" perforator tool; also the reprints are yellow-brown.) Most examples of this stamp are defective and certainly not this attractive. Especially fresh appearance! Facit 2020 value SEK 5500 for with gum, however gummed examples are quite scarce.

J19 GRAY VIOLET (Facit L17a) [1877 24 öre Postage Due, Perf 13; 1882 Printing] Mint with F-VF centering, without gum. In some respects this is one of the scarcest Swedish stamps -- it is often easier to obtain a #1 than an example of #J19! 322a/322 (Facit #332CB) [1941 5 kr blue Stockholm Palace, pair with straight-edge on right side only] CB pair, Used with Superb centering and ESKILTUNA cancellations, but with light bends (hard to see). Correct greenish-blue color of the early printings. This example came off packages of ball bearings sent by airmail in 1941-1942 from Sweden to the Ford Motor Company in the U.S., for military production -- would have to have been sent on the dangerous secret night flights from Stockholm to Scotland and then onward by clipper flying boats to the U.S. [see the book Blockade Runners]. One of the key BC/CB pair issues -- such nice centering is quite scarce! Otherwise would be $245 for this centering.

322a/322 (Facit #332CB) [1941 5 kr blue Stockholm Palace, pair with straight-edge on right side only] CB 10-BLOCK (THE COMPLETE BOOKLET PANE, w/o selvage), Used with VF/XF centering and ESKILTUNA cancellations, but with bends and a couple shorter perforations. Attractive and completely sound in all respects. Such large blocks of this BC/CB issue are extremely scarce because most of the heavy packages they were on (or on parcel cards) received very rough treatment. While it may not be obvious, stamps like these helped win WWII.

Q1 "1.93" VARIETY, Facit #97v1 [1917 1.98 Parcel Post surcharge] Used VF/Superb 3-Strip with variety stamp on right stamp. The "8" of the overprint is significantly deformed and nearly looks like a "3". Facit calls it the 1.93 variety and places it as position 33 in the sheet. I have had so few examples (maybe 5?) in the last 46 years that I suspect that the damage to the overprint plate occurred sometime during the printing process and only exists from part of the printing. To the best of my knowledge, this variety was first reported by David Anderson (deceased) of Minnesota back in the 1970s or 1980s and through his almost-maddening perseverance the variety was confirmed as constant and became catalog listed. This variety example would be the nicest used single that I have had or seen and the only one I have had or seen in a used multiple. The stamp is much harder to find (mint or used) than the modest catalog value suggests; and in a used multiple it is extremely scarce.

Q1 Possible "1.93" VARIETY PRECURSOR, Facit #97v1?? [1917 1.98 Parcel Post surcharge] Used Average-Fine example showing damage to the "8" in the overprint, with part of the metal cliche breaking away; when fully broken away, I think this would look like the "1.93" variety. If my observation is correct, this would support my theory that the overprint plate damage occurred during the printing and thus only some of the sheets show the variety. This is the only such potential precursor example, mint or used, that I have ever seen or know about.

397 FLUORESCENT, Facit #300v1 [1968 Fluorescent Printing of the 1948 1.40 kr dark green 3-Crowns] Used Superb with fully dated 14 February 1969 light cancellation. An unannounced (accidental?) 1968 printing on bright yellow fluorescent (under long-wave UV light) paper. This variety (and also some faintly fluorescent varieties of other stamps) was accidentally discovered around 1978 by a staff member of the Rolf Gummesson stamp dealer firm who was checking some other stamps under UV light and noticed these. In 1968-1969 this denomination was needed for foreign postal money orders (thus the stamps were spread widely on items sent outside of Sweden -- and the destination post offices tended to keep such forms as the receipt for making the payment -- which helps to explain the rarity of used examples). The supply of mint stamps was long exhausted before this variety was discovered; only by chance might a collector have obtained a mint example (of a 20 year old stamp design) from the post office in 1968. Rare in mint and quite hard to find used, especially undamaged and with nice centering. This is a top quality example in the 99th percentile.

Accompanied by a 2012 Helena Obermüller-Wilén certificate stating that it is mint with original gum, never hinged ("postfrisk"), with a SFF grade of 3,3,5 and with the comment that translates to "A very beautiful and fresh example". Wonderful delicate color, perfect perforations, and perfect gum (with the expected "pooling" of the later printings). While mint examples of this workhorse stamp are offered in the market, they are usually dingy and shopworn, and rarely NH -- NH examples are very scarce. Facit 2018 value SEK 9000 for least costly printing. An outstanding example with freshness rarely seen!

The specialist will appreciate just how scarce this item is both with the watermark variety and the smaller-town cancellation! By the way, Haparanda is located at the northerly extreme of the Swedish coastline, and is the eastern-most community. As the key to the primary land route to Finland, it has great historical importance.

537 Fluorescent Paper Variety, Facit 332Av1 [(1958) 5 kronor Palace coil] NH SUPERB PAIR of this rare variety. This is one of the rarest, if not the rarest, of a small group of Swedish definitive stamps that had new printings on paper that contained "gold flecks" of fluorescent matter, printed sometime in the late 1960s or early 1970s. These paper varieties were not known to exist until staff members of major Swedish stamp dealer Rolf Gummesson discovered them in the 1980s. By that time, the stamps were no longer in use and these mid-period-of-use printings had long ago been consumed in normal postal use and had subsequently been reprinted again on normal paper. The only mint examples available to philatelists today are those that were by chance purchased by collectors who happened to get them when ordering stamps from the Swedish post office stock list while those printings were current (which I know from my own experience to mean sometime before 1973). The fluorescence consists not of a coating, but of many tiny golden specks embedded in the paper; view under long-wave UV light in a completely dark room. The appearance is both of tiny gold highlights and a general faint yellowish glow. While viewing, compare to other stamps of the time period. (Viewing of used off-paper stamps may not be reliable due to their soaking in water.) This printing of this design is also distinguished by a delicate light greenish blue color and glass-smooth extremely-shiny gum. I am only able to offer examples of this stamp every few years. No stamp dealer seems to have a stock of them; Gummesson located a few examples of this stamp in mint condition, but sold out very quickly. Facit listed this stamp, and most of the few others in this category, for a number of years, but for unexplained reasons dropped the listings some years ago. (However, Facit also does not list many important "whitened paper" varieties of later stamp issues for no good reason.) A rare stamp listed by some of the European catalogs and always strongly sought after. Even singles this nice are rare, however, I cannot remember ever before seeing a pair offered. Priced only at the value of two singles.

12a Dark Carmine, "1855 Perforations" [1858 50 öre Coat of Arms] Mint VF, but without gum (typical). Great "1855" perforations (variable tooth size and blind perfs) and incredible color! (The carmine colors, Scott #12a, were perforated on an older machine with many bent or missing teeth, resulting in an irregular perforation appearance. These are referred to as "1855 perforations" in the literature. The machine was replaced in 1865.) The Facit 2015 value (with gum) for the Carmines ranges SEK 6000-8000 (12/14 US$900-1200).
