Identifying the Norway 1867 "8 SKILL 8" Rose Clean Print Stamp
by Jay Smith & Associates

If there is one classic-era Norwegian stamp which is misidentified more often than any other, it must be the "8 SKILL 8" Rose, Clean Print, issue of 1867. Cynics would suggest that it is a matter of "optimistic identification", however it is also true that there is very little readily available information on how to identify this stamp. None of the current specialized catalogs give the reader many clues as to how to identify this stamp. In reality, the identification of this stamp is rather straigthforward and really need not be such a "secret".

The secret in detecting the "clean print" is not the color, it is in the details of the printing. It is not just that the printing is cleaner and clearer, there are two distinct features that are different between the two printings. (A dark impression of which can look a lot like a light impression of the more common carmine color.)

I hope that you have the scarcer Clean Print! Good luck!

Blue Circle: Notice that the piece of the wreath extending toward the vertical of the K does NOT touch the K. The wreath piece is clear and distinct.
