1913 Christmas Seal IMPERFORATE PROOF. Mint, never hinged, COMPLETE SHEET of 25 on UNGUMMED PAPER with beige color back. Colors as issued. Brilliant colors and pristine in all respects. This proof sheet shows the little-known "horn on 9 (of 1913)" variety in position 20 that appears in the issued seals. An outstanding Art Nouveau Christmas seal design. Various proofs of most (1908, 1910-1916) DWI Christmas Seals are recorded, however, they are rarely offered. [This sheet of 25 contains ten horizontal pairs and five singles; in 2023 I sold two horizontal pairs of this color/paper for $79 per pair, imputing a break of value of about $980 for the sheet. Since the market is more limited for full sheets than it is for the popular pairs, I am able to offer the full sheet for well below break-up value. Despite the recent availability of those two pairs and now this sheet, this type of material is extremely scarce!]

"DANSK VESTINDIEN PROTEST MOD SALGET" (Protest against the sale...) w/ ULTRAMARINE ON CHALK COATED PAPER. NEVER HINGED, FULL SHEET OF TEN (2 columns, 5 rows) with full margins all around. Each stamp is VF to VF+ centered, with wonderful freshness and perfect original gum. Small printing plate difference in each position allow one to use a sheet like this to "plate" all ten positions. Prior to acquiring this sheet and ten other singles, previously in 50 years I had been able to offer fewer than 8 full-gum single stamps (and no multiples); now the total is less than 18 full-gum singles and only one full sheet. A beautiful and key item from the final chapter of DWI philately as the U.S. was working toward buying DWI (now the U.S. Virgin Islands) during WWI to prevent the Germans from gaining control of DWI as a submarine base! Even single are "rare" in such nice quality. I have quickly sold singles of this quality at $110 each! Even though a sheet is much more rare than a single, the market for a sheet is more limited, thus this is priced at slightly less than its $1100 break-up value. An outstanding and important item for a DWI collection.

DWI Harbor scene, horizontal-inset format. Highly detailed sepia-photo showing harborside buildings and more buildings ascending the hill in the background. No card publisher indicated. The message on the card is datelined "St. Thomas 23-3-1900". The presumption is that the picture is taken from the St. Thomas harbor viewpoint, but I have not been able to (yet) identify the foreground building and I suspect the picture may instead be of the Christiansted harbor. The diagonal-curving white line is an artifact of the photo printing; I believe it to be caused by a crack in the contact-print glass. The card was mailed within St. Thomas, and it is "franked" with a 5 cent Bicolor Perf 12.75 stamp (Scott #19, Average centering) -- which would have been a large overpayment of postage -- but I am of the opinion that the stamp does NOT belong to this card and was later added to fill in where a stamp had fallen off. The cancellation date is not clear. The stamp would be quite scarce properly used on an item of mail. For this reason, I have priced the card as a picture post card, NOT the stamp used on a card or cover. The card itself is most certainly a very early (the 1900 dateline is appropriate to the card) pre-1907 undivided-address side. This may (?) be the earliest DWI picture post card I have had in 50 years; DWI cards before 1904 are extremely scarce. Ignoring the stamp, this is still a very desirable early DWI picture post card.

1907 NEVER HINGED with VF centering. Incredibly fresh example of the rarest DWI Christmas seal and one of the rarest of all official Scandinavian Christmas seals, as well as being one of the rarest classic worldwide Christmas seals. Keep in mind that the first-ever Christmas seal was issued in Denmark only three years earlier in 1904. It has been a long time since I was last able to offer an example this nice.

Scott #R2 [1907 50 Bit] NEVER HINGED with Average centering (perforations just cut the frameline at top), with INVERTED WATERMARK. The inverted watermark is known to exist but is listed with just a dash in the price in Scott. I have not previously recorded having an example of an inverted watermark on any of the five printings. If I have noticed any other dealers offering the inverted watermark, I do not recall. In my experience with inverted watermarks on DWI and Danish revenue stamps of this format (all printed by the same printer), the inverted watermark on a particular stamp is either relatively easy to find or it is extremely scarce -- this stamp is in the "extremely scarce" category. [McRee states that there are five printings. Over the years I have seen several of the resulting different color shades -- this example is a Pale Green -- but I have not seen them all at one time and thus I cannot supply comparison information. Compare to your collection. I do not know which of the printings are known to exist with inverted watermark. However, I feel confident in saying that if there were any inverted watermarks on this stamp that were sold in the 1971 archival sale, it was extremely few, perhaps just a single sheet.]

Great Britain Scott #55a (SG #120) [1867 2s PALE BLUE Plate 1] F-VF stamp with VF vertical barred-oval "C51" cancellation used abroad at St. Thomas (Danish West Indies), on small piece. The postmark is bold and virtually complete. The stamp has wonderful color, excellent perforations, and normal centering for this issue. The Scott Classic listing for this cancellation only shows the cancel on #55 (blue instead of this pale blue). The 2 shilling is very scarce used at St. Thomas; this is the first 2 shilling I have recorded having in 48 years -- and it is even scarcer with the pale blue color. The Scott Classic 2022 pricing has an error because the Used Abroad at St. Thomas price (in the DWI listings) of #55 used at DWI is $150 whereas the basic Used price for this stamp in the GB listings is $200 for #55 blue (and $240 for this #55a pale blue). [I have reported this problem and similar problems to Scott; they need to have a better procedure to keep these Used Abroad prices in sync with the normal stamp prices.] A more appropriate Scott value for a regular #55 blue with C51 cancellation would be $260 and the much scarcer #55a pale blue at $300. Note that Scott specifically states that their values for these stamps are for F-VF centering. Provenance: From the J.A. Farrington collection.

Scott #10 [10 Cent Bicolor] Imperforate Plate Proof. AFA 2016 Specialized #P11 (value DKK 3000): 1876, Frame Group 3 (in the 10 cent stamps, only stamp Print 1 used Frame Group 3), on ungummed thin white paper without watermark. The colors are very close to the colors of the Print 2 stamps. Four large margins and well centered. Great color and freshness, but with defects: Two thins, one of which terminates as a dent in the top margin; tear at bottom below the small "10". The paper of these early DWI proofs is so thin that many/most examples have defects. Very scarce; I doubt that more than a few dozen examples still exist today. However, because of the defects, offered at a very low price.

Scott #R17 [1919 50 Bit Documentary] Used, with F-VF centering ON DOCUMENT. 27 November 1926 Bill of Exchange, canceled that date and payable one year later. Ornate check-like format payable at the "National Bank of the Danish West Indies" at Christiansted, in the sizable amount of 12,500 Francs! Includes a Danish-DWI "logo" consisting of palm trees, the Danish crown, and the Danish three lions with hearts. Even though this Bill of Exchange was issued 9 years after the sale of DWI to the U.S., this bank had been granted, in 1904 for 30 years, special privileges and could issue "Danish king currency" and use their own currency system, alongside the U.S. Dollar until 1934. Two other revenue stamps may have been affixed on the left side of the Bill; there are parts of cancellations, but no detectible indication (even under UV light) of remnants of stamp removal; thus those markings may have been overlap from canceling another document. The 50 Bit revenue stamp is placed in the center of the document where it was creased when the document was folded (into quarters). The used stamp alone has a Scott value of $40 -- this is a scarce item! Very attractive! Any on-document DWI or VI revenue uses are extremely scarce. This is the first such items I have had in 47 years!

LETTER SEAL: NH VF deep red vertical-oval embossed, gummed paper seal (height 37 mm) with Danish coat of arms (two woodwoses [wild men] either side of the shield/arms with crown above). Text: "GUVERNEMENTET FOR DE DANSK VESTINDISKE ŘER" [řer = islands]. This is the first example of this, or any, DWI official paper seal that I have ever seen (in 47 years) on or off cover. (I have seen such items for Denmark, but only on cover, not mint examples.) If I had known about this seal being on cover, I would have guessed that mint, full gum, off-cover examples no longer existed. While this is more governmental than postal, it was intended to seal official letters, both for security and as proof of official content for appropriate postal service. This version of the coat of arms (which includes a falcon to represent Iceland) dates from 1903-1948, thus in terms of DWI, this dates from 1903-1917. Despite being that "modern", it is rare. An exceptional and important postal history item!

The sheets of 100 were divided into quarters and placed into the books, one quarter per book; all four quarters can be found. The smaller-size marginal number indicates into which DWI Mails numbered volume the sheet was placed. A larger-size marginal number, found only on the lower-right quarter sheets, indicates the serial number of the reprint sheet of 100.
