3.  Swedish Composers and Mozart Souvenir Sheet -- Urgent Information Shopping Cart: Review or Check Out   Top

Other image links below.
(Ordering information below.)

Issued as a set of three coil stamps (including a Mozart coil stamp) and a Mozart souvenir sheet of nine stamps. The souvenir sheet presents a situation similar to the 2005 Greta Garbo souvenir sheet which increased many-fold in value and is now listed by Facit 2007 at SEK 1000 = US$140! (I have a few in stock for $75 or $110 with cylinder and counting numbers.)

The Swedish post office's announcement stated that only 40,000 Mozart souvenir sheets were printed (compared to 30,000 for Garbo), however, that was not exactly correct. In actuality, 40,000 Mozart souvenir sheets were available for sale as souvenir sheets. Additional souvenir sheets were printed and torn up so that single stamps from the souvenir sheet could be included in the year pack, collector sheet, so-called issue set, and on the first day cover. The amount of the additional quantity has not been revealed, however, it is said to be enough to meet the needs of the post office's subscribers of those items. It is important to note that ONLY SINGLES are included in the year pack and the other items, NOT the whole souvenir sheet. Thus Sweden's own subscribers did NOT automatically receive the souvenir sheet! Sweden does not reveal their number of subscribers, but I have heard estimates in the 100,000 range. Even if those estimates are wrong and it is only 50,000, there are simply not enough of these Mozart souvenir sheets to meet the eventual needs of collectors in Sweden, to say nothing of worldwide demand. It will be about a year before many collectors get their new annual catalogs & album page supplements and discover that a souvenir sheet was issued that they did not receive. Furthermore, this souvenir sheet will be made even more popular by the music topical and a broader interest in all Mozart stamps being issued in Europe this year.

I usually do not promote stamps as investments, but this souvenir sheet has excellent potential. If nothing else, I feel I have a responsibility to let you know of this situation. This is a case where I think it would be a very good idea to put 5 or 10 aside for investment.

But, there is more: Like the Garbo issue and other recent Swedish souvenir sheets, the Mozart souvenir sheet exists with cylinder numbers. Two types exist: Cylinder #1 alone and Cylinder #2 in combination with a Counting Number. Equal quantities were printed. However, I quickly discovered that distribution of these numbered souvenir sheets was very uneven -- my delivery from the Swedish post office included none. It took some work to track down a very modest supply of these two numbered types. I strongly recommend getting them very soon before prices rise. It seems that most collectors do not yet know that the numbered sheets exist.

In addition to the souvenir sheet, I believe that the issue of three coil stamps (one of which is Mozart, denominated for the inland letter rate) will quickly increase in value. Most Swedes tend to buy booklets for their stamp needs at home. It is the postal clerks that are more likely to use the easily dispensed coil stamps. Because relatively few commemorative inland letter rate coil stamps have been issued recently, I believe that the Mozart coil will see heavy use by postal clerks and that supplies will be quickly exhausted -- and quickly replaced in use by the upcoming Christmas issues. Don't overlook the coil set; commemorative inland letter rate coil stamps issued in the last 2-4 years are already listed by Facit at 2.5-3.5 times face value and there seem to be very few wholesale stocks available.

But that is not all: The Swedish post office did not issue a first day cover for the souvenir sheet. The only FDCs in existence for this popular music/composer issue are the few that are privately made by individuals. (When the Swedish post office started making officially cacheted FDCs back in the early 1980s, the few remaining commercial FDC/cachet makers went out of business.) This is the same situation as occurred with the Greta Garbo s/s FDC -- and that now sells for at least $95.00 if you can find one. (I am out of stock at this time, but am accepting want lists.) I have a very few Mozart s/s FDCs available for only $22.50 (see below).

4.  NEWS FLASH!  Norway 8.50 Polar Bear Machine Stamp for Spitzbergen / Svalbard Shopping Cart: Review or Check Out   Top

(Ordering information below.)

The Norwegian post office has issued it's first stamp especially for Spitzbergen.... well, almost.

The Arctic island group of Spitzbergen, also called Svalbard, has been the subject on a few Norwegian stamp issues, most recently including a 3-stamp set and souvenir sheet issued in 2006. (I have in stock if you are interested: NH set and s/s, Official Packs for set and s/s, Official Maximum Card set, and Official FDCs for set and s/s. Please email to order.)

Private local posts operating on Spitzbergen also issued stamps in the late 1800s and early 1900s. (Available on approval from time to time; please inquire.)

And, there have been tiny Norwegian post offices operating on Spitzbergen for many years -- serving the local population of coal miners and scientists, and tourists.

Here is a Svalbard web portal site, a nice map of the region, and multiple webcams showing current weather (perpetual night as I write this). (These links will open new in windows.)

However, never has the Norwegian post office issued a stamp specifically for use on Spitzbergen... until now!

On 4 January 2006, a set of three Polar Bear machine stamps were issued for general use around Norway in the post office's stamp vending machines. The initial printing of these stamps was non-fluorescent and on white backing paper. The stamps have been popular and the 8.50 value was heavily used.

The tiny post office on Spitzbergen -- actually recently reduced to a contract postal station -- does not have a stamp vending machine, but they sell a "lot" of the 8.50 denomination of the Polar Bear stamps to visiting tourists for use on their mail sent home. The Polar Bear machine stamps were very popular -- it is a Spitzbergen Polar Bear pictured (Spitzbergen is the only Norwegian home of Polar Bears) and it is the only currently available Norwegian stamp picturing this "friendly" bear. Spitzbergen exhausted their own supply of the 8.50 value and general use around Norway finished off the rest.

In anticipation of the busier summer tourist season, Spitzbergen ordered additional supplies of the 8.50 stamp only to be told that supplies were exhausted.

Norwegian postal authorities ordered a new printing of the 8.50 value of the Polar Bear stamps. However, the specialized printing company was temporarily out of the previously used self-adhesive paper (non-fluorescent stamps on white backing paper). Instead, apparently unknown to the postal authorities, they printed on fluorescent stamp paper on yellow backing paper.

Because these stamps were intended for Spitzbergen, the vast majority were sent to Spitzbergen, where almost all were used on mail during the 2006 tourist season. My information is that only 150 stamps were not sent to Spitzbergen. Additionally it appears that after the tourist season, 500 stamps were returned to Oslo -- that means that roughly 650 mint stamps exist (plus a few purchased by tourists, but not used). It is important to remember in all this that what you are reading here may be the first public announcement of this information and that most collectors have yet to learn of the existence of this stamp.

Obviously this "Spitzbergen" Polar Bear stamp will be very scarce, or perhaps even rare. As the first "official" (i.e. not a private local post) stamp specially printed for Spitzbergen use, it is essentially "Spitzbergen #1".

By the way, machine stamps are real stamps. Some collectors mistakenly think they are meters or related to meters, but they are not. They are real stamps because they can be used from any location in the country, on any date, and by any mailer. (In contrast, meters can only be used from the licensed location of the meter, on the date of the meter and by the licensee of the meter.) Machine stamps are "new technology", but they are stamps and are of ever-increasing interest to collectors.

I may be the only stamp dealer aware of this stamp and the only one who can offer any examples. Obviously supplies are extremely limited.

Please order via email (this stamp is not yet on the shopping cart system). Usual shipping and handling terms apply (please especially note costs for orders under $40).

5.  Question about Website Presentation of Town-Canceled Items Shopping Cart: Review or Check Out   Top
I would like your opinion about how I should present town-canceled items on the website. This includes individual stamps with excellent town postmarks, covers bearing town postmarks, and postal stationery with town postmarks. The emphasis is on items with collectible-quality postmarks, not just any used stamp or cover.

Originally I had assumed that I would divide the presentation of these areas by their physical characteristics: stamps, covers, and stationery each in a separate section divided up alphabetically and/or regionally. However, that is more work for me and, for the person who collects postmarks from a particular town or region, that would mean they would have to look in at least three places on the website.

I then thought that the different physical items could be all in one structure, organized alphabetically by town postmark. (And potentially also in another structure as well, organized by region, if the information is readily available to do so.) However, it occurs to me that the collector of individual stamps with VF postmarks might be annoyed by the presence of covers and cards in the same section; or that the collector only of covers might be annoyed by stamps in the same section.

What do you think? Which approach would you prefer? Email me.

Note that covers and stationery would also be presented in appropriate sections for the stamp issues on cover and cover usages, or by the stationery issue. A nice feature of our custom-built database is that items can be viewed in multiple categories (web pages or price list sections).

Albums and Supplies:

#731065   Stender Superb DENMARK Hingless Album, New and Complete To Date
Brand-new album including all the latest supplement pages right up to date. Hingeless, i.e. with clear mounts already installed in the album. All you need to do is add the stamps. What is the catch? This brand-new album is a couple years old from the previous printing (no difference in content) and the subtle color shade of all the pages does not match exactly with the most recent supplements. I just found it on the shelf hidden behind some other albums. Currently, as it is offered, it is in ONE Green Superb binder and slip case of the style available a couple years ago. The current price (in one binder) is about $460!!! This binder is full; it will immediately need another binder. The binder that it is in has a small (one inch) split on edge; many people might not notice. If you happen to have a spare Stender binder, then you are all set (only Stender binders will fit Stender pages.) Otherwise..... OPTION #1 ADD ONE Green BINDER AND SLIP CASE (newer style: is close, but does not exactly match) for $56.00 additional ($70.45 regular price). OPTION #2A INSTEAD have TWO new-style BINDERS ONLY (your choice of red, green, blue) for $69.00 additional for the pair ($89 regular price). OPTION #2B INSTEAD have TWO new-style BINDERS AND SLIP CASES (your choice of red, green, blue) for $120.00 additional for the pair ($140.90 regular price). However you approach it, this is an extremely good price for a brand-new album. Do not hesitate! (Remember, I am the North American distributor for Stender Albums and I can supply the future annual supplements.) $330.00

(Christensen and Ringstrom, 1974) The superb ENGLISH-language "bible" of this fascinating area. The best work to date, fully illustrated and priced in US$ (as of 1974). This has been described as one of the most finely produced works of philatelic literature. Hardbound, quarter leather, marbled binding, etc. A masterpiece. Absolutely crucial to any collector of Danish locals. (This book is so good that I purchased the publication rights from the estates of the two authors.) Out of print and out of stock everywhere that I know of; the last new copy I found cost me $110 a few years ago! Like-new quality except for the dust jacket. $95.00

#731059   Modern Faroe Varieties and Sheet Types 1982 - GF11
(von Wowern, 1982) Illustrated catalog of constant varieties and sheet position types of certain Faroe stamps up to 1982. Appears to include some information not in the only other edition of GF11. Full English (and Danish) text. Very useful. It has been a long time since I was last able to offer this book. Pristine like-new condition. $13.00

#731064   Michel German Postal Rate Handbook 2001
An important book valuable to any collector of German covers or postal rates. Though entirely in German, this is a very useful book, especially since there is no similar publication in English. Starts with the German States (1849) and runs into the late 1990s. 279+ pages absolutely packed with valuable information. Absolutely brand new copy, originally $44.50. $32.00
