Personal Note: If you have called our office in the last few years, the person who answered the phone was likely Dewey Braxton, my brother-in-law (one of my wife and partner Bonnie's brothers). Dewey also takes care of the incoming mail and does all the outgoing mail and packing (so if you like the carefully applied cancellations on commemorative stamps, it is he you can thank). Dewey will be 60 on Monday 16 July. Bonnie thought it would be fun if Dewey received at least 60 Birthday cards (or emails to js@JaySmith.com). Feel free to send your birthday wishes to Dewey at P.O. Box 650, Snow Camp, NC 27349.

3.  Greenland Pakke-Porto New Issue Contains Surprises Shopping Cart: Review or Check Out   Top

To celebrate the 100th anniversary of Greenland's first Pakke-Porto (parcel post) stamps -- the so-called "Bears" -- Greenland issued three regular sheet stamps over the years 2005, 2006, and 2007 and capped it off on 21 May with a 2007 souvenir sheet showing all three stamp designs. The stamps and the souvenir sheet are very attractive and though they have high face values, it is very expensive to send heavy mail from and within Greenland.

But... there is more to the story. We all expected the souvenir sheet of three would contain stamps that were identical to the regular sheet stamps. However, the souvenir sheet contained surprise.

The first stamp issued was the 2005 50 kr stamp picturing the 10 øre Pakke-Porto design. The stamp is on dull paper, is perforated 12.75 x 13, and at the bottom of the stamp has a small "2005". However, the stamp from the souvenir sheet is perforated 14 x 13.5, is on shiny paper, and has a small "2007" at the bottom. By all philatelic standards, it is a different stamp!

The second stamp issued was the 2006 25 kr stamp picturing the 5 øre Pakke-Porto design. The 2006 regular sheet stamp has "2006" at the bottom, while the stamp from the souvenir sheet has "2007". The paper and perforations appear to be the same, but this will be considered by most people to be a different stamp.

The third regular sheet stamp issued came out on 21 May 2007 at the same time as the souvenir sheet: 100 kr stamp picturing the 20 øre Pakke-Porto design. It appears to be identical to the 100 kr stamp from the souvenir sheet.

Be sure to purchase one souvenir sheet to be kept intact and another to break up for the three single stamps. The souvenir sheet is in stock and is listed here along with its components.

I also have the plate blocks (upper or lower, or both) in stock if you like to collect them. Additionally, Greenland recently started imprinting the opposite corners so now some collectors want both an upper and/or lower plate number corner and an upper and/or lower imprint corner blocks. All are in stock for just a very small amount above the price for four single stamps.

I have the official maximum cards in stock for the three regular sheet stamps in stock. (Their is no maximum card for the souvenir sheet or its components.) They are likely to become quite scarce and costly. Get yours soon.

Additionally, I have the official FDCs of the regular sheet stamps and the souvenir sheet in stock, but they are not yet on the website. Their prices are:
   2005  50 kr  $28.00
   2006  25 kr  $15.00
   2007  100 kr  $39.00
   2007  souvenir sheet  $64.00

(I am attempting to obtain some single-stamp FDCs of the stamps from the s/s. If they can be obtained, they will likely be rare -- please advise ASAP if you would be interested in such a set of covers; the cost would likely be around $67 for the set of three.)

Lastly, in 2005, Greenland issued a wonderful hardbound book about the Greenland Pakke-Porto stamps: their design, use, postal history, etc. It is a top-notch production with many illustrations of important items that not available anywhere else. The book has spaces for the mounting of the three stamp designs and the souvenir sheet. As each additional stamp has been issued, it has been included in the book and the price has increased appropriately. I highly recommend this both as a Greenland post office issue and as Greenlandic philatelic literature. The book containing all three stamps and the souvenir sheet is in stock and is available for $169. (I know it seems like a lot, but it includes stamps that sell for $129.50!)

My bottom-line recommendation: Everybody should have the three regular sheet stamps, the intact souvenir sheet, and the three stamps contained in the souvenir sheet. The book is extremely worthy of consideration (everybody who has seen it has raved about it). And the official FDCs and Maximum Cards would finish off your collection if enjoy including such in your collection. If you want to do it the easy way, just drop me an email and let me know what you want and I will take care of it from there.

Additionally, I anticipate that most stamp albums and catalogs will eventually show the 25 kr and 50 kr stamps from the souvenir sheet as completely different stamps and that there will eventually be a surge in demand. Because the price of the souvenir sheet is high, few stamp dealers will be able to afford to stock large quantities ... and thus prices will rise as collectors (who don't get my Enews) "discover" that these stamps exist and dealers stocks dry up. I rarely advise putting aside additional examples, but in this case, I think it would be very worthwhile.
4.  WWII Norwegian Legion Label Shopping Cart: Review or Check Out   Top

In 1941, some Norwegians sympathetic to the Nazi German cause formed Den Norske Legion (The Norwegian Legion) with the intent of forming two battalions to defend Finland, alongside Finnish (and German) forces, against the Soviet Union. Only one battalion was successfully formed; by the end of 1941, the Legionnaires numbered over 1200. However, contrary to Norwegian expectations, the Legion was quickly German-ized with the soldiers wearing German SS uniforms; the first two Norwegian commanders resigned rather than serve under tight German control. By February 1942, instead of being sent to Finland, the Legion was sent to ......Read more and see the price list.

I am constantly buying large and small Scandinavian, U.S., and Worldwide collections. If you are considering getting into a new area and would like a "starter collection" (whether small or large), let me know about your interest. Also, if you are seeking used binders or used empty albums to match what you currently have, again, let me know. In the process of buying Scandinavian collections, many of my long-time clients (or their estates) ask that I assist in selling the non-Scandinavian portion of their collections. If there is something you are looking for, just let me know. Take a look at the current listings on the web site (but if you don't see your interest listed, please inquire -- most have not been listed on the web site yet).

I guarantee your satisfaction. Each item is one of a kind; orders will be filled in order of receipt. Payment by MasterCard or Visa suggested, but I will hold items for 10 days pending receipt of your check or money order if you prefer.

#731327   Greenland Mint and Used Collection 1950-80
A mix of both mint and used stamps on various Scott specialty album pages punched for 2-post binder (NOT a complete set of pages). Usually mint on one page and used on another page. Condition looks to be uniformly VF with quite a few better stamps included. The Mint stamps all appear to be lightly hinged and the Used stamps are virtually all with neat, light cancels. Individual JSA retail is over $140! A great group to start or build a collection. $79.50
Order Online  (Will open a new window; the new window may be under current window.)

#731328   Iceland Mint Collection 1948-71 on Scott Pages

The Scott Specialty 2-post pages run from 1948-1974 plus semis from 1933 and airs from 1934.Condition appears to be uniformly VF with quite a few better stamps included. The 2008 Scott retail value is over $265. Many nice runs of stamps with many pages full. Quite fresh. $109.00

#731340   Iceland 1873-1992 Collection on Scott Pages
Large, well-filled, and valuable collection starting with #1 and continuing to 1992, on neat and attractive Scott pages punched for 2-post binders. #1-2 are space fillers (Scott 2008 catalog value $1175 but not counted in the total of $3580). From 1876-1960 the total 2008 Scott value is $3580! The early issues are mostly used and many have small, hidden defects. Mint starts mixing in around 1930 and is mostly mint by 1960. Up to about 1978 the Mint stamps are Hinged. After 1978 the Mint is NH. Appearance is Fine to F-VF to about 1940 and most VF from there on. The stamps after 1960 were counted at individual JSA retail values of over $350. Throughout the collection most spaces are filled including in the back-of-book issues. The pages are clean, attractive, and complete to 1992, with most spots filled with black Showgard mounts (quite a bit of cost and work right there). The values above total over $5100! A terrific value! $749.00
Order Online  (Will open a new window; the new window may be under current window.)

#731311   Norway 1856-2002 Collection on Scott Pages
Impressive, well-filled collection covering all eras of Norwegian stamps. On Scott Specialty pages (punched for 2-post binder). It is in a 2-post 2.5-inch Scott Specialty binder, but that is gold-stamped "BRITISH AMERICA" and on the front cover the previous owner painted "NORWAY" in large white letters [you might wish to save some postage by having me not ship the binder, I have not charged anything for it in the price]. The 1856-1890s era is well-filled with used stamps, but the 1890s-1941 era is mostly used and fairly sparse. The whole 1856-1941 era has a Scott 2007 value of over $1110, however many of the 1856-1890s stamps have the usual defects (mostly hidden, and thus still mostly nice looking). The 1942-79 era is 99% Mint VF (hinged, with a few NH stamps), is very well-filled, and has a Scott 2007 value of over $620. The 1980-2002 era appears to all be NH VF and more than half-filled, with a 2007 Scott value of over $700 and with a face value of over NOK 1790 = $285! The back-of-the-book issues are fairly well represented with Used for the earlier stamps and Mint for the later. Scott 2007 value is over $130 (with more valuable paper varieties on the Officials not counted as such). Virtually every spot has a neatly cut and applied black (a few clear here and there) stamp mount, regardless of whether or not a stamp is present. (The cost of new hingeless pages is in the hundreds of dollars!!!) The total Scott 2007 value is over $2560!!! A terrific start for your Norway collection or a nice home in which to expand an existing collection. Offered for a small fraction of catalog value on valuable hingeless pages. $695.00

#731338   Norway Collection in Lighthouse Hingeless Album
Lighthouse 1855-1983 hingeless album pages in green Lighthouse springback "NORGE" imprinted binder. The pages include the specialized pages for the early issues showing the different colors, types, etc. One can obtain the post-1983 pages from Lighthouse. It appears that some 1965-67 pages are missing, but again they can be obtained from Lighthouse. The stamps consist of a scattering of 1922-45 Used F-VF and VF stamps and 1945-83 stamps in VF, mostly Mint NH (with a few Hinged) condition. A relatively modest collection of a few hundred stamps, but in better than usual quality for a collection and in a handsome album that can (and should) be used for further expansion. Scott 2008 retail catalog value is over $440! The album itself (to 1983) retails new for over $380! Very fresh and clean album and stamps. $280.00

#731326   The 1990 Doonesbury Stamp Album
A 16-page "album" that is actually a book composed entirely of sheets/pages of perforated, gummed Doonesbury cartoon/comic label "stamps". Tremendous range of subject matter including the usual Doonesbury political satire. Celebrates "20 years of quality cartoons". If you have seen one of these, you know what fun it is. If you have not seen one, well... it is hard to describe. If you enjoy politics, satire, cartoons, Doonesbury, or generally labels and Cinderella items you will want this. Front cover with a couple dents (looks okay) and a few minor marginal adhesions not affecting the labels. The best condition example I have yet seen in the last few years. $16.95

Numeral cancellations are listed and priced by stamp issue/era. Star and Starless (UDS) cancellations are listed and priced. The so-called "PR" cancellations (bridge type cancellations with "PR" in them; for small offices controlled by larger (PR) post offices) are listed and priced with earliest and latest dates of use. "Stempelmarkenkatalog der Nordischen Staaten, I Danmark, II Danish West Indies" published in 1951 in Helsinki, listing and pricing mostly just the documentary and playing card revenues with German and English text; originally 12 pages copied onto 6 pages. #731313   Norwegian Local Post Stamps
(Pihl, 1963; Norges Byposter og annen norsk lokalpost) The classic catalog and handbook of Norwegian local post stamps. Though a 2005 catalog has updated values and information, there is a huge amount of information in the Pihl 1963 catalog that is not found anywhere else. This is still needed by any collector of Norwegian local post stamps. Original examples are quite scarce and almost always have significant binding wear. Original edition in very good used condition with only a small amount of wear on the cover and virtually no binding wear. $47.50
