Danish West Indies: Shipping Company Stamps: St. Thomas - La Guaira - Puerto Cabello

These interesting stamps are often called Ship Letter Stamps. They were sold by the agents of ship operators and paid the postage on letters carried by commercial ships, usually when government mail service was not available. The DWI Shipping Company Stamps are listed in the annual Facit Specialized Catalog which I distribute and are most comprehensively listed in the beautiful 1976 handbook and catalog by S. Ringström and H.E. Tester The Private Ship Letter Stamps of the World, Part 1, The Caribbean which I have available.

I often have a wide range of Danish West Indies (as well as Danish, Finnish, Norwegian and Swedish) shipping company stamps in stock. These usually never make it to the website or price lists and are usually only available via approvals. Please be sure to let me know of your interests.

These issues, often referred to as the La Guaira issues, consist of four basic designs, each in various denominations: The "Real Issues" (real as a currency); the "Jesurun Issues" (bearing intials "J.A.J.Z."); the "Centavo Issues"; and the "Numeral Issues". Of most there is a wide range of types/stones, varieties, cancellations, etc. There are convincing forgeries and reprints of some issues. All items I offer are guaranteed to be as described.

Facit #LG 3 FORGERY [1866 Medio Real, Blue] Believed to have been produced by the Spiro Brothers around 1868 (for stamp packets). Imperforate (or trimmed?) with four margins and bogus cancellation typical of a type that the Spiro Brothers used. Thin, as usual.

Facit #LG 19 [1869 "Jesurun" Medio (half) Real, Green, Perforation 12.5] Used Average with typical oily cancellation. Typical rough and some clipped perforations. This is quite scarce used -- such really used examples are seldom "pretty". Facit 2011 value SEK 1000 = $160 [5/2011].

Wonderful example in extremely nice quality for used stamps of this issue. Probably the best used example of this number that I have had in 37 years. Very scarce!
