7 Orange Brown [1858 4 Skilling, Lined Spandrels] (VF) on 14 September 1858 small DOUBLE WEIGHT envelope with #24 numeral cancel and HELSINGØR side postmark, to København. Paid only for single weight, thus charged POSTAGE DUE with a red "6" for cash payment by the recipient. Though this is a traditional underpaid postage due cover, not one of the terribly rare penalty usages, it is still a seldom seen usage.

Denmark #70 pair [1905 5 øre Christian IX] (F-VF) on 14 June 1906 SPLIT-BACK picture post card (København City Hall Plaza) from LINDERSKOV to the U.S. The post card rate to the U.S. was 10 øre, however, split-back post cards (or any message on the address side) was not approved by the UPU between most countries until 1 October 1907. (Such cards with the proper 20 øre franking are actually scarce.) Danish rounded-box (wider than tall) "T." and double-lined octagonal-box "12 1/2 cts." [UPU gold centimes special "currency" for calculating postal rate interchange] handstamps. "NEW YORK / F / DUE 5 CENTS" machine postmark. U.S. pre-canceled (as typical) 5 cent postage due stamp applied at Omaha, Nebraska. A very nice example.

J15 [1922 10 øre Green Postage Due] (VF) tied by 26 July 1922 KJØBENHAVN cancellation on 24 July picture post card posted aboard the Swedish naval ship H.M.S. SVERIGE (apparently near Båstad, Sweden, at the time). There appears to have been a stamp affixed and canceled at lower right, but it must have quickly come off; there is a Swedish octagonal-boxed "T." handstamp, a blue manuscript Danish "10", and the Danish postage due stamp. If there had been a stamp that had fallen off, this should not have been rated as postage due.

J15 [1922 10 øre Green Postage Due] (F-VF) tied by 25 September 1923 "KJØBENHAVN N." cancellation on 24 September (nice Swedish text-machine Gothenburg Exposition cancellation) underpaid envelope franked with 15 öre Sweden Scott #167 (or maybe 189?? Ha!). Swedish boxed "T 10 õre" (somewhat unusual) handstamp, blue manuscript Danish "10", and the Danish postage due stamp. The correct postage rate was 20 öre, thus the shortage was doubled. There was no return address, thus it could not be returned to sender for additional payment.

No Swedish postage due markings, thus was probably mailed on the ferry or train between Hälsingborg, Sweden, and Helsingør, Denmark. Blue manuscript Danish "20 T", and the Danish postage due stamp.

J33 [1934 20 øre Gray Engraved Postage Due] (VF) tied by FARUM cancellation on 4 February 1943 underpaid business envelope bearing #230 Type II from "KØBENHAVN OMK. 22". The sender accidentally paid the local rate instead of the inland rate, resulting in a due amount (20) of double the shortage (10). A postal carrier notation on the reverse indicates that the recipient (at a bank) refused delivery. The postage due stamp was likely canceled at the time the carrier prepared it for delivery but the amount was not collected from the recipient -- it was returned to sender; I am not sure if the sender became liable for the shortage.

J34 [1934 25 øre Blue Engraved Postage Due] (VF) tied by 15 May 1951 "TRANEBJÆRG / SAMSØ" cancellation on 15 May 1951 UNFRANKED envelope with sender endorsement "Postbesørges ufrankeret" (mailed without postage) from "NORDBY SAMSØ". Adressed to Politikontoret (police station) in Tranebjærg. Though it is not well documented in the literature, mail from citizens to government offices could be sent unfranked. This is the only example of such mail that I can recall having in 38 years. Postal history from the small island of Samsø is avidly collected. Unusual!
