More than 150 stamp designs were officially submitted to the post office for the 1938 Thorvaldsen issue, many of them showing the sculptor's work or related architectural elements. Virtually all of the essay designs are either very scarce or rare; some only exist as original artwork in the postal museum.
Oluf Pedersen, a postman from Odense, submitted three designs. The 10 øre pictures the Thorvaldsen statue "Hebe"; the 15 øre "Venus with the Apple Awarded by Paris"; and the 30 øre a portrait of Thorvaldsen with the statue "Ganymede with the Eagle of Jupiter". Imperforate, ungummed, printed essays exist in four colors (black, blue, red, brown). Perforated essays also exist, but are very scarce.
