58, Facit #77v2, AFA #43ay [1905 2 øre Numeral and Wavy Lines, Crown Watermark, Perf 12.75] "PARTIALLY MISSING HEARTS" plate variety listed in both Facit and AFA Specialized. Usually examples with this much of the hearts missing are offered as "completely missing hearts", but that would not be correct. Both varieties are are not transient variations caused by too much inking; they are constant flaws that developed due to wear of the cliches (and likely due very shallow relief of that area of the cliches at the time of cliche manufacture). Used with F-VF centering and fully dated 3 September 1907 cancellation. The variety is clearly visible (or perhaps I should say "clearly not visible" since the partially missing hearts is the variety). Seldom offered, and when offered, many times it is not the actual variety. This is a nice one!

59, Facit #78v1, AFA #44bx [1905 3 øre Numeral and Wavy Lines, Crown Watermark, Perf 12.75] "MA" JOINED plate variety listed in both Facit and AFA Specialized. This variety only exists in 3 sheet positions (31, 38, 95). Mint, extremely lightly hinged, with VF centering. This variety is always in demand because it is so obvious, however, it is seldom offered.

60 [1905 4 øre Numeral and Wavy Lines, Crown Watermark, Perf 12.75] Mint, hinged, with XF/VF centering, BLOCK OF FOUR. Very fresh and attractive appearance. The color shade, paper, and impression strongly suggest that this block is from the first (scarcer) printing series (1905-1907; AFA #45a). Though normal Mint stamps are certainly not "scarce", blocks have become much harder to find in the last 20-30 years, particularly such nicely centered blocks.

60, Facit #79v2, AFA #45ay [1905 4 øre Numeral and Wavy Lines, Crown Watermark, Perf 12.75] "AR" JOINED AT BOTTOM plate variety listed in both Facit and AFA Specialized. This variety only exists in a total of 5 positions in the C and D sheets of the first printing series (1905-1907). There are two extremely similar versions of the variety: 1) From a matrix flaw that resulted in the vareity in sheet positions 29, 31, 44, 46; and 2) an individual cliche flaw that resulted in the variety in sheet position 39. I believe that this example is one of the four matrix flaw positions. Used with VF centering and dated [6 or 16 or 26] June 1907 cancellation. The variety is clearly visible. This variety is always in demand because it is so obvious, however, it is seldom offered.

61 [1912 5 øre Numeral and Wavy Lines, Crown Watermark, Perf 12.75] Used BLOCK OF FOUR with F-VF centering, but with a couple minor bends as expected on a postally used block. Just as a point of interest (not affecting the price), this block shows an example of what is today called "revenue protection". The block was placed sideways on the envelope and received a machine cancellation which thus was mostly on two stamps (and a tiny bit on a third). Thus an observant postal clerk applied a handstamped cancel to fully cancel the other two stamps. Back then, it was "worth" the effort for postal clerks to do this, to prevent re-use of stamps, since the postage cost was "real money" to an ordinary person. While this is a "very common" stamp in Used condition, used blocks are very seldom offered!

62 [1912 10 øre Numeral and Wavy Lines, Crown Watermark, Perf 12.75] Used BLOCK OF FOUR with VF centering, but XF appearance. No defects. AALBORG 20 May 1914 cancellations. While this is a "very common" stamp in Used condition, used blocks are very seldom offered -- the AFA Block Catalog 2017 (most recent edition) listed the value at 60 DKK!

64 Blackish Blue, Facit #83b, AFA #66a [1912 20 øre Wavy-Line, Perf 12.75, Crown Watermark] Used with XF centering and light cancellation. There is a spot for this stamp in most European-made albums for Denmark. An outstanding example of a stamp that is missing from most collections (and even when the spot is filled, it is often incorrectly filled with a dark shade of the dark blue normal stamp).

64 Dark Blue, Facit #83a, AFA #66x [1912 20 øre Wavy-Line, Perf 12.75, Crown Watermark] Used Horizontal Pair with XF centering and a neat VEILE 9 September 1912 bridge cancellation. The right stamp has a listed stamp variety, AFA Specialized 2016 (most recent edition) #66x: "shorter curved line on right side of top of crown"; DKK 125 for normal quality single. A very attractive and clearly visible example of this rarely-offered plate variety.

68 GRAY LILAC (Facit #67b, AFA #50 Gray Lilac) [1905 50 øre Christian IX] Used with VF centering. PRE-PRINTING PAPER FOLD: horizontal, near the bottom, all the way across the stamp, wider at right side. The cancellation is clear of the wider part of the fold -- the unprinted gap -- at the right. This type of variety is exceptionally scarce on the Christian IX stamp issue, and especially on the higher denominations. This stamp is the key value of the set; even normal examples with nice centering are hard to find -- a normal example with this centering would be around $120!

78 Rough Perforation Variety [1907 100 øre Frederik VIII] Mint Superb, JUMBO-margined example. An exceptional example in three ways: The perforation variety, the huge margins, and the wonderful centering. Very fresh. Extremely unusual.

82 [1912 5 Kr Post Office Building, Crown Watermark] Mint with Average centering (four perfs just barely touch the frame line), very modestly hinged. No defects. Wonderful, rich color. As comparison, Mint F-VF would be $395! The plate for this stamp was a copper-plate engraving, but made in two different styles. The frame is very deeply engraved thus has very think ink, while the center has shallow engraving with tremendous detail. The result is the appearance of having been printed with two different color shades of ink!

FAROE BISECT 4 øre Wavy-Line Stamp on Piece (Scott lists as Denmark #88a), Facit #1a [1919 Bisect of Danish 4 øre Wavy-Line Stamp, originally Scott #88, Perf 14 x 14.5, Crosses Watermark] Used VF on small-size, partially cut-to-shape piece accompanied by F-VF Denmark #97 (a couple short perfs at bottom) [5 øre Christian X] to make the complete 7 øre postal rate for which the bisects and the Faroe #1 overprints were intended to meet. Bisected upper left to lower right, which is scarcer orientation. Almost complete and quite unusual TRANGISVAAG 21 January cancellation. The paper of the piece was torn at the bottom of the bisect, but was adhered back into place. Accompanied by Jay Smith color image certificate with lifetime guarantee stating that the stamps are genuine and belong on the piece and that the cancellation is genuine, but since backdated examples are known to exist, the date of the cancellation may be questionable (details of the guarantee are available). The bisects were made starting 6 January when it became clear that the supply of 2 øre stamps (needed to make up the new 7 øre postal rate) was quickly being exhausted, but before the 12 January Faroe #1 2 øre overprints were created. Bisects were used through 24 January, however, the DAKA Catalog states that "some" examples canceled 18-20 January at Trangisvaag were canceled after 24 January but were backdated to 18-20 January. We cannot know if this example was actually used on the 20th or if it was backdated. Facit SEK 4000 (1/2024 about $400, with most common postmark). A very nice looking example of a scarce Faroe item that is missing from virtually all Faroe collections, offered at a great price! [C#02852-01-013]
