Finland: Covers: WWII-Era Foreign Volunteers
Scott numbers have been used unless otherwise indicated. All items are available for viewing on approval.
In the WWII era, during the "Winter War" and the "Continuation War", many foreign volunteers joined the Finnish fight against Russia. The bulk of foreign volunteers fighting in Finland were Swedish. At times, German Nazi forces were also fighting alongside Finnish and volunteer forces, against Russians, resulting in the odd possibility that Jewish Finnish or volunteer officers could be commanding German Nazi soldiers.

Mail from Swedish volunteers can often be identified by postmarks and handstamps that include "F" and/or return addresses of "Haparanda F" and/or "S.F.K." postmarks. Markings using the Swedish-language term "fältpost" indicate Swedish-language units, senders, etc., however they do not guarantee that the item is volunteer mail. The Finnish-language term "kenttäpostia" is also (less often) seen on volunteer mail.

Swedish volunteer Winter War 23 February 1940 nice cover franked with Sweden Scott #294 [1939 15 öre Linne, coil] (F-VF) from a soldier in the SFK, to Sweden. Finnish censorship tape sealed with violet handstamp (with large letters/numbers "RT 44" in right-side box). Examples with a censor tape are quite a bit scarcer. HAPARANDA F Swedish postmark -- the "F" (for Fältpost) postmark also indicates that this is Volunteer Forces mail. Quality as nice as one could ask for.
