The essays that many have ascribed to the first issue of Greenland were actually submitted in a competition for issue of Danish stamps. The essays come in two forms: The first are very rare and were printed on off-white paper with only one color per essay. The second, which are what are normally called the essays, are still scarce, however were printed after the competition with several colors per design. Regardless of their background, 60+ years later the Greenlandic connection in the design makes them very much sought after by collectors of Greenland.
