KGH 66 picture post card ["The post office at Thule Air Base" with Sukkertoppen (sugar top) in the background] maker Top Card, copyright 1966. Used VF with Scott #106 [1977 1.00 Jorgen Brønlund, explorer], 1 February 1979 from SDR. STRØMFJORD to Denmark. The card bears a circular handstamp in black: "POSTAGE PAID / * PORTO BETALT *", type 2c (with the asterisks) listed in GF5 1999 [valued at DKK 400, but I have only ever seen three examples]. This handstamp was used May-June 1978 in the gift shop at the Sdr Strømfjord airport to indicate that the purchaser was paying for both the post card and the postage -- the postage was applied later and the card mailed by gift shop personnel. This was to save time and trouble and to allow senders to buy the postage even when the post office was closed. Uses of this handstamp are extremely scarce. This example is a bit odd, but is explained by the accompanying handwritten (in English) explanation by the Danish military officer who had purchased the card on a Sunday in May-June 1978. He forgot about them until February 1979 at which time he tried to mail them. The postal clerk was unwilling to accept that the postage had already been paid (and indeed, the gift shop had probably not paid the post office for a stamp) and thus required the sender to pay for and apply a postage stamp.

1939 Large-Numeral Postal Savings Stamps on savings book page: 25 øre Clear Dark Ultramarine with 2-line "Handelstedet Kutdligssat" village cancellations. The page has been cut from a savings book. The stamps are not tied by the page by cancellations; the previous owner stated that the stamps in a book had come off a page due to moisture and were consolidated onto this one previously unused page. (However, in actual practice, due to the large size of the stamps, there were often not tied to the page anyway.) A book cover (dated 1944) is also included; this is the first and only example of a post-1938 savings book cover that I have seen in 32 years. Used examples of these stamps were only recently discovered; prior to my examination of them, it was not known that at least two colors of the 25 øre exist (also Dark Blue). The stamps appear to all be VF centered with typical, or better, perforations. The "break up value" of this page is at least $430, not counting the book cover.

Fantasy (private) overprints on genuine Greenland stamps: Set of three "expedition" overprints with 4 kr surcharges typographed onto Greenland Scott #48 [1963 1 øre Northern Lights]. Overprinted: "STORE KOLDEWEY EXPEDITION", "JOKEL- BUGTEN EXPEDITION", and "WANDLES SEA EXPEDITION". Attributed to the creative American collector Brad Arch (deceased), and were probably produced in the mid-1960s. Completely private, unauthorized "Cinderella" stamps, however they are interesting and have been quite popular. (I have seen them sell at public auction at high prices, but this price is much more appropriate.)

"IVIGTUT / KRYOLITHBRUD / BYPOST 1922" 10 øre green imperforate "stamp". The design includes a polar bear and a pick and shovel (for mining cryolite, a mineral used in aluminum production, of which Greenland was the only commercial producer; this and several other rare minerals from the Ivigtut deposit are all, to some degree, hydrous aluminum sodical calcium fluorides). This is a completely private, unauthorized fantasy or "Cinderella" label with no postal connection whatsoever. Attributed to the creative American collector Brad Arch (deceased), and were probably produced in the mid-1960s. Interesting and quite popular and now fairly scarce. (I have seen examples sell at public auction at high prices, but this price is much more appropriate.)

233-8 [1991 Seals] approximately 0.75-1.00 ounce officially shredded by the Greenland post office and used for packing material in a shipment from Greenland. The material is thin-cut, but not cross-cut, thus you might be able to piece enough together to determine why it was shredded. Was it shredded due to unpublicized errors or was it simply withdrawn from sale??? Would make a neat desk ornament if put in a glass display bottle or similar arrangement. I have never before seen shredded stamps that reached the public via official channels. Price includes shipping in the U.S.; it is a bit awkward to ship despite the low weight.
