U.S. Military censorship of photographs and cards: "PHOTOGRAPH / PASSED BY / BASE CENSOR" double-ring circular censor handstamp in black on unused linen-finish, U.S.-made picture post card. The card was created in 1939 by/for the Icelandic Commission to the New York Worlds Fair and illustrates Hvanneyri, a model farm showing off Icelandic agricultural progress. The card was probably sold at the military base PX in Iceland for soldiers to use writing home. Examples of this censorship handstamp are extremely scarce; I have only seen them on unused cards. |
