SKILLING 1873 IMPERFORATE PLATE PROOFS Complete Set (Scott #1-5, O1-2). The complete set of seven imperforate plate proofs, both the regular postage stamps and the officials. Thick white paper, without watermark, never gummed. All are in the issued colors except for the 3 skilling which is a blackish gray (a proof in the issued light gray is not known to exist). The quality of this set is extraordinary. Usually these proofs are found in very poor quality, including small margins, creases, and especially thins. This set is perfect, with huge margins, except for: the 3 skilling has smaller margin at top and an irregular printing impression at bottom; the 4 red skilling (postage) looks superb, but has a small thin spot; the green 4 skilling (official) has a natural paper inclusion (small speck of tree fiber). The 3 skilling has faint pre-printing paper fold which is a variety, not a defect. The colors are all wonderfully fresh and strong, including the usually faded 9 skilling light lilac official. These proofs are usually found one at a time -- this is the first time in 50 years that I have been able to offer the complete set, and by far the nicest quality that I have seen in one set. Facit Classic 2014 value SEK 14,000.

183 [1934 30 aur Christian X, Redrawn Portrait] NEVER HINGED with VF centering. The 30 aur was one of the last stamps produced with this worn-out perforating equipment (the new style of engraved stamps with different perforations were already coming out by this time) and thus always has rough-looking small-hole perforations. This example has remarkably nice perforations for this 30 aur. Wonderfully fresh! An outstanding example!

49 [1902 3 aur "Small 3" Perf 12.75 with Black I GILDI overprint] Mint, extremely lightly hinged, with Just-Fine centering. The reverse shows a "perfect" offset print of the overprint. Such offsets result from either: a) pressure being accidentally applied to a stack of just-overprinted sheets with still-wet ink; or b) from the previous printing impression occurring without paper in the press thus an overprint impression was instead made on the "tympan" (which is the surface under the paper normally being printed) and then the next sheet that was overprinted received a transfer back from the tympan. Offset impressions of the overprint are not "very scarce" on the I GILDI stamps, but they are interesting and collectible; I have only seen a few examples of an offset on this particular stamp. AIEP member and preeminent I Gildi expert Ellis Glatt viewed a high resolution image of the stamp in January 2024 and commented that the overprint is genuine in his opinion. This stamp is accompanied by a Jay Smith color image certificate with a "lifetime guarantee" from Jay Smith (details of the guarantee are available upon request). Scott #49 is the least costly of the "scarcer" I GILDI overprints, but it is still missing from the vast majority of collections. This is a very reasonably priced example with the extra bonus of the interesting offset variety.

Orlof 5 kr Overprint on Scott #98 (Facit #120) [5 kr Frederik VIII] Mint, extremely lightly hinged, with XF centering. Wonderfully fresh and attractive with almost perfect centering, great color, and perfect perforations. This is perhaps the rarest of the Orlof overprints and is "rare" even with faults -- this just might be the nicest example any of us ever see! As of 12/2023, this is only the second example I have had (in any condition) in 50 years and the other example was in really terrible condition (but it still sold for $200). I believe this to be the rarest overprinted Orlof stamp.

Orlof 10 kr Overprint on Scott #O36 (Facit #TJ38) [Official 16 aur Two Kings] NEVER HINGED with VF centering. An outstanding example with strong color, crisp printing impression, great centering, and excellent perforations. As of 12/2023, this is only the third example I have had in 50 years; this example has equal to or better centering than the others. This scarcity of this stamp is greatly under-appreciated.

44B [1904 5 kr Christian IX] Used with XF centering. Very fresh appearance with great color, clean white paper, and perfect perforations. Neat lower corner cancellation almost "face free". An additional interesting feature of this example, though it does not increase the price, is that the crown watermark is horizontally split (shifted so that the right and left halves are on each stamp); this is not unusual on lower denominations, but I have seen very few such examples of the 5 kronur stamp. The centering and cancellation are exceptional for this stamp (it is usually very poorly centered). One of the nicest looking Used examples I have had in several years. A great example of a key Icelandic stamp that is quite scarce in nice Used condition.

Facit C/P cancel #118 (2024 value SEK 400). Though this particular C/P cancel does not have a very high catalog value, this strike is remarkably nice and readable; it is especially nice to show the first letters of the town -- also, it is upright and on a well-centered stamp. An excellent example for this type of postmark! The stamp was issued 9 October 1902 and the use almost all (including this one) C/P cancellations ceased by summer of 1903, thus this cancellation on this stamp was only possible for about 8 months!

PARTIAL OFFSET PRINT ON BACK: This occurs when pressure is (irregularly) applied to a stack of ink-still-wet sheets; the design from the stamps below transfers to the back of the stamps above. Mint-with-gum examples of this stamp are unusual. I can only recall seeing on other example of an offset print on this typographed stamp.

AFA-listed #7x Print 4 (DKK 800 [$120 10/2023] in the 2016 Specialized, most recent edition) plate variety: "White spot in front of P; white spot over O; diagonal cuts in lower left corner and frameline; dent in right frame line near bottom opposite AU". An interesting feature of stamps from this printing is that when viewed under 10x magnification at an oblique angle to a point-light source, the ink has a silvery metallic sheen. A very attractive example with a nice cancellation.

An interesting feature of stamps from this printing is that when viewed under 10x magnification at an oblique angle to a point-light source, the ink has a silvery metallic sheen. Examples of the Numeral stamps are surprisingly difficult to find with fully (including year) dated cancellations because the more usual single-ring cancellations did not include a year date. In this case, the presence of the 1894 date is a nice because it means that this stamp cannot be from Print 5 which was in July 1895. A very attractive example with a nice cancellation.

AFA #8.2 [1876 (1878 Printing) 10 aur, Perf 14 x 13.5] Used with Fine centering and neat, light single ring cancellation. Facit #12a represents printings 1-4 (but the AFA lists them individually); the individual printings are of course scarcer than the combined quantity of all four printings. Examples of the early printings in attractive quality are surprisingly hard to find. The AFA Specialized 2016 (the most recent edition) value is DKK 300 [about US$45 10/2023] while the Facit 2024 value for all four printings combined is SEK 400 [about US$40 10/2023]. An excellent example of this early color.

12 (Reddish) Brown, Facit #13c [1876 16 aur brown Numeral, perforation 14 x 13.5, 1886 printing] Used with XF centering and neat smaller-town (one of five possible towns) corner cancellation. Wonderful color and centering, with remarkably light cancellation, and perfect perforations. [The 1891 grayish brown "unclean color" printing can be hard to distinguish from this 1886 yellowish brown printing (color names per the catalogs). When directly compared, the 1891 color does look a bit grayish (and sometimes muddy), but in my opinion it looks more yellowish than this 1886 printing. If I had selected the color names, I would have called the 1891 yellowish brown and this 1886 either brown or reddish brown.] Nice looking examples are hard to find. Facit assigns the same values for Used examples of 1886 and 1891 printings, but the 1886 printing had fewer printed and is much harder to find in nice quality.

Not only are uses of this overprinted stamp quite scarce on a postal item, but it is extremely scarce showing both stamps (even if one is partial) and even more special in that it shows that both stamps were in use simultaneously, though at different post offices. The stamp on the back was cut in half when the front stamp was clipped out of the card by the post office for kiloware (after the required period that these cards had to be retained). To the best of my recollection, I have had only one other such example in 49 years (and never any complete cards). Seldom offered stamp that is unknown to many collectors. 6 [1873 4 skilling, Perforation 12.5] Used with XF centering and huge, even margins all around, but with small, hidden faults (faint crease at lower left corner; crease and small tear at upper right corner). This is a terrific-looking stamp and it really does require a 10x magnifier to see the problems. The very thin paper used for these stamps results in most examples having such problems. This example has the usual rough perforations that are so typical of the Perf 12.5 stamps -- that is normal and expected, not a defect. The cancellation is very light, but it is an almost perfect, upright REYKJAVIK cancellation of the proper type for this stamp, used in the correct time period. Strong color and nice white paper -- an outstanding looking example! This 4 skilling Perforation 12.5 stamp is among the rarest regularly issued stamps from Iceland. It is usually one of the last regularly issued Icelandic stamps obtained by most collectors. This example is much, much nicer than is usually seen! Facit 2024 value with a normal cancellation is SEK 19,000 and Scott 2024 value is $2250. A very attractive example of a greatly under-appreciated stamp that is missing from virtually all collections.

[The Bicolored Numeral stamps of Iceland do have frame differences (the quantity of vertical background lines broken by the upper right or lower left corner triangles that identify the frames as upright or inverted. By chance the quantities are even; the plate consisted of 51 upright vs 49 inverted frame stamps, thus there is no price premium. For details, see this article with illustrations on my website. However, this difference is unknown to most collectors; if the difference was more obvious and better known, the extant quantity of stamps would be divided in half, with each half being assigned different catalog numbers -- half as many stamps (of each number) would result in higher catalog values / prices for each of the two types.] This example is very fresh and bright, with nice centering, and perfect perforations. Priced just as a basic stamp with this centering.

23 NORMAL FRAME [1900 4 aur Numeral, Perf 12.75] NEVER HINGED with VF centering. Wonderfully fresh and attractive, with bright colors, perfect perforations, post office fresh gum, and nice centering. Though listed in the AFA Specialized Catalog (2016 [in stock] or 1995 original edition or 1997 English translation), but not by Facit, the fact that there are inverted and normal frames of the Icelandic bi-colored Numeral stamps (4, 25, 50, and 100 aur) is not known by most collectors. Each sheet contained 51 normal frames and 49 inverted frames. For details, see this article with illustrations on my website. This is a wonderful example of "fun fact" kind of item that few people even know exists! Priced just as a basic NH stamp with this centering.

Pristine condition. : An unusual type of booklet, unique in the Scandinavian countries: the card cover, designed for vending machine is folded at left and glued shut at right. The stamps inside are contained in a small crystal-clear envelope that sits inside the cover, not attached. The envelope contains Scott #412 and #414: five 1-kr stamps (folded down to a pair) and three 5-kr stamps (folded down to a pair). Perfect perforations and nice color. PLATE VARIETY: The top frameline has a large break about one-third from the left side. This variety is not shown in the handbook by Regeling, thus the plate could have been damaged and quickly repaired or the break could have appeared very late in the first printing (and repaired before the second printing), thus not known to Regeling. Facit 2022 value for normal quality examples of the first printing is SEK 1500! That does not take into account the variety; though this variety is not listed by AFA, it is more prominent than most that are listed and those have a value premium of about 65%! Very attractive and wonderfully fresh.

H3E likely exists with any of the three panes upright or inverted. I have only had this one example of a H3E booklet in 49 years. From the Garson collection. [The most complete and specialized listing of Icelandic booklets was in the Facit 2006 catalog.] The Facit value of this H3E booklet was SEK 24,000 in 2006. The current 2022 Facit (with less specialized listings) still shows a value of SEK 24,000 (approximately $2400 in February 2023)! That being said, it does not seem that the Facit editors have actually reviewed this pricing in many years. While the missing corner of one 5 aur stamp is a defect, other than that problem, the booklet and the stamps are wonderfully fresh. The stamps in the booklet are scarce in NH condition; the individual selling prices of the stamps totals right at $1000! This intact booklet early booklet is extremely scarce and is rarely offered in any condition.

Facit #H5G Panes respectively, Fish 5 aur mounted by top margin, 10 aur green bottom margin, 25 aur red top margin. : 1940 complete booklet with Light Blue cover; Cover type G (front cover with words "um alt land" and NOT "um allt land"). 5 aur Brown Fish (Scott #219c [1939-40]) pane of five; 10 aur Green Fish (Scott #221b) pane of five, and 25 aur RED Fish (Scott #224b) pane of five. H5G exists with any of the three panes mounted by top or bottom margins. I have only had this one or two examples of a H5G booklet in 49 years, but likely that the other I may have had would have had different top/bottom margin mounting combinations. From the Garson collection. [The most complete and specialized listing of Icelandic booklets was in the Facit 2006 catalog.] The Facit value of this booklet was 24,000 in 2006. In 2006, the six listed versions of the H5 booklet ranged in Facit value from SEK 12,000 to 18,000, with only this H5G being at the SEK 18,000 level. The current 2022 Facit catalog (with less specialized listings) does not break out the pricing of the six possible H5 versions; instead it shows only a single value of SEK 18,000 now -- which would be for the most common version which was valued at SEK 12,000 back in 2006. From that we can extrapolate that a properly updated Facit value for H5G would probably be in the range of SEK 22,000 to 24,000 now (approximately $2200 to $2400 February 2023). The Facit editors do not seem to have actually reviewed this pricing in many years. The booklet is in VF condition and the stamps in the booklet have centering that ranges from F-VF to VF -- all the stamps are wonderfully fresh. The stamps in the booklet are scarce in NH condition; the individual selling prices of the stamps totals $1865 for F-VF centering (even though some of them are better than F-VF)! The value of the contents fully supports the current H5 "generic" Facit value, to say nothing of the extrapolated current H5G Facit value. This intact booklet early booklet is extremely scarce and is rarely offered in any condition.

UNLISTED booklet similar to Facit #H4 EXCEPT CONTAINING 5 aur OVERPRINT ON 35 aur Jochumsson. : 1939-1940 complete booklet with Light Blue cover; Cover type G (front cover with words "um alt land" and NOT "um allt land"). 5 aur OVERPRINT on 35 aur Blue Jochumsson (Scott #212) pane of five -- NO ICELANDIC BOOKLET IS LISTED AS INCLUDING THIS STAMP!; 10 aur Ultramarine (NOT Gray Blue) and Carmine Flag (Scott #228) pane of five, and 25 aur RED Fish LINE PERFORATION VARIETY (Scott #224 variety, Facit #248C4) pane of five with plate number "2" in margin (one stamp with small natural paper inclusion). The 5 aur and 10 aur panes are upright (mounted by left margins) and the 25 aur pane is inverted (mounted by bottom margin). Prior to this, I had only previously seen one Icelandic booklet from this era with a plate number showing in the margin as it is on this 25 aur pane. This is the only example of any booklet containing the 5-on-35 aur Jochumsson stamp that is known to me. One of the definitions of what makes a booklet a "different major catalog number" is the stamp or combination of stamps in the booklet. By that definition, this booklet should have its own major catalog number in Facit. I have reported this booklet to the Facit editors. This booklet is from the Garson collection. [The most complete and specialized listing of Icelandic booklets was in the Facit 2006 catalog. This booklet was not listed in that edition, nor in any later edition.] Assuming that this booklet is not unique (but it is certainly very rare) -- though it is possible that it is unique -- I estimate a catalog value should be in the range of SEK 35,000 ($3500) based on the high values of the other 1939-1946 booklets which are known to exist in at least modest quantities. However, if this booklet is unique, the value could easily be much higher. The booklet is in PRISTINE condition and the stamps in the booklet have centering that ranges from VF to XF -- all the stamps are wonderfully fresh. The 25 aur RED stamps variety with the scarce line perforation in the booklet are quite scarce in NH condition, selling for $269 each; the total of all the individual selling prices is over $1345. An important Icelandic booklet rarity!

Facit #H7H/I VARIETY. Panes: Fish 5 aur mounted by top margin, 10 aur gray bottom margin, 25 aur brown-red bottom. : 1945 complete booklet with Dark Greenish Blue BACK COVER and Light Blue FRONT COVER. This booklet has COVER TYPE COMBINATION: Front Cover Type H and Back Cover Type one of I through L (as noted below, there are Facit listings problems in I-K vs L). The front cover has "SOFFIUBUD" 29 mm wide; words "um allt land" and NOT "um alt land". The inside front cover (side 2) has the star between two loops and NOT just a star. Those are all characteristics of Cover Type H. However, the back cover has: above "Simar: 4690-5690" and below "Simar:5690-4690". To add to the fun, the front cover is dark greenish blue (which Facit says is the color for Cover Type "I") and the back cover is light blue (or blue) which Facit says blue is the color for Cover Type "H". [At the same time, to confuse things further, there appears to be either a textual typo or an image error in Facit 2006 for the back cover of Cover Types I-K vs Type L (in regard to the "Simar" features).] I have previously encountered cover variations (combinations of front and back covers), in addition to the interleaf combination variations footnoted by Facit. I do not know if this booklet is a scarcer, unlisted variation, or if this is just showing up an error in Facit. Regardless, the Facit listings need further work. 5 aur Brown Fish (Scott #219 [1941-46]) pane of five; 10 aur GRAY Fish (Scott #222) pane of five, and 25 aur BROWN-RED Fish (Scott #225) pane of five with PLATE NUMBER "2" in margin. Prior to this, I had only previously seen one Icelandic booklet from this era with a plate number showing in the margin as it is on this 25 aur pane. This booklet likely exists with any of the three panes mounted by top or bottom margins. From the Garson collection. [The most complete and specialized listing of Icelandic booklets was in the Facit 2006 catalog.] Facit only lists this combination of stamps as being in Cover Types H and I (and M and N, but this is neither of those). The 2006 Facit values of H7H and H7I are SEK 7500 and 7000 respectively (Approximately $750 and $700 in February 2023) -- and in 2022 Facit generically valued the most common H7 variation at SEK 7500. This example, not quite fitting either of those definitions may be a scarcer, more valuable unlisted variety. The Facit editors do not seem to have actually reviewed this pricing in many years. The booklet is in PRISTINE condition and the stamps in the booklet have centering that ranges from F-VF to VF -- all the stamps are wonderfully fresh. The intact booklet early booklet is scarce as listed by Facit, but this unusual combination of cover types and colors is likely to be much scarcer as the people hand-making the booklet were likely in a short-duration transition between old and new supplies of front and back covers.

[This specific cancellation type is genuine and proper on this stamp; this is NOT a type of cancel that was used after the stamps were no longer value for postage.] A beautiful example of a stamp that is quite scarce in properly used condition, but it has two tiny margin tears and one tiny margin thin speck. The intense color is terrific and the perforations are much better and cleaner than usually found on this stamp. Without the quality problems, this example would fetch $675! Most collections of Used Icelandic stamps are either missing this stamp or contain an example canceled after the period of validity. An attractive example offered at a very attractive price! [The coils, perforations differences, and color / paper differences of the Gulfoss stamps are not well known. They are scarce and many were discarded over the years by collectors who thought they were just defective (trimmed) stamps. Generally, the Gulfoss stamps had up to four perforation types: C1 and C2 are 14 x 13.75 two types of comb, C3 is 14 x 13.5 comb, and C4 is 13.75 x 13.75 line perf. As a comparison / measuring tool, the 60, 65, and 75 denominations only exist in C4 (13.75 x 13.75 line perf); in some cases, line up those up against the perfs of other stamps, rather than using a gauge. There are various further color shades (sometimes also with tell-tale difference in impression clarity) and paper color differences that are not listed in the catalogs. 44B [1904 5 kr Christian IX] Used with VF centering, however with worn appearance and color somewhat faded. While I think that this stamp may have been genuinely used on a high-value (registered, insured, or parcel) letter leaving the country, the cancellation either confuses the issue or makes the stamp much more rare. The cancellation is a type (with "9-4 E" hours indicator) that was not used in Iceland in this era. It appears to be a Danish postmark with a "K." at the bottom (for the "København K" post office). That is typical type of Danish cancellation found on Icelandic "fishing boat mail" - mail that was either mailed at sea, or was accepted at the dock in Iceland right before leaving port, and was handed over to the Danish post office upon arrival at a port in Denmark. What makes this example especially interesting in that regard is that a Danish cancellation on this high denomination stamp is "quite rare". However, without more research, I cannot vouch for the cancellation. If it were not worn and faded, and if it had a certificate, it would be valued at multiple times the normal Used value.

This "C4" line perforation was made by separate perforator tool strokes to make the horizontal vs vertical perforations, thus the four corner teeth are random in shape and appearance. Furthermore the perforator tool was worn out with bent hole-punches, thus the thickness of the teeth / spacing between the holes can vary. This line-perforated stamp is very hard to find even as singles. Used F-VF singles without perforation damage would fetch $18 each. I have not recorded previously having a Used 4-block of this stamp (in any quality) in 48 years. Despite the perforation quality, this is a very scarce block.

2, AFA 2y SMALL CLICHE [1873 4 skilling, Perf 14 x 13.5] Mint, with full original gum (unusual), extremely lightly hinged, with XF centering and brilliant color. This is a wonderful example of a little-known, but major variety. The height of the design is only about 19 mm instead of 20 mm -- this is been listed by AFA with little fanfare, but it is not listed by Scott and is otherwise seldom mentioned in the literature... despite this small cliche appearing in 8 positions in the sheet! Regardless of the variety, this is an exceptional well-centered and large-margined example, that looks NH without a magnifying glass. The perforations are absolutely perfect -- extremely unusual for an example of the Skilling stamps. The combination of the quality and the variety make this a truly exceptional "GEM" example that defies any catalog valuation. AFA Specialized 1996 (most recent edition) value for the mint variety in ordinary quality is DKK 2000 = $330 [12/2021], compared to DKK 1200 for the normal type. However an example such as this -- the finest I have seen of this variety in 48 years -- commands a significant premium. Only 8000 of this variety originally existed -- surely only a small fraction of those remain today -- and likely not more than a few dozen of the original quantity of the variety could have looked this nice -- perhaps this is the finest remaining example? A superlative stamp for a superlative collection.

2 [1873 4 skilling, Perf 14 x 13.5] Used with a perfectly centered REYKJAVIK cancellation, but that was applied after the end of the skilling currency period, i.e. "after-canceled". The cancellation is a genuine postmark type, just applied after the period of validity of the skilling stamps. Other than some of the relative angles of the lettering, this cancellation Type (Facit) G1b looks almost identical to the correct-period cancellation Type D2 -- see the Facit Classic for illustrations of the difference. Fine centering, strong color, and with extremely nice perforations for a skilling issue (the horizontal perforations are almost always rough). Accompanied by an 1998 APS certificate stating "Used, genuine in all respects" -- not mentioning the cancellation (I was not an APS examiner of this stamp at that time). An unusually well-centered strike of this cancellation, but appropriately offered at a very low price. (For comparison, Scott 2022 value for a correctly canceled Used stamp is $900.)

15 Golden Yellow [1882 3 aur, Small 3, Perf 14 x 13.5] Mint with VF centering and large margins, but no gum and with a small crease that could perhaps be flattened out. This is a complicated and controversial stamp color; it was the subject of an extensive article, by expert Lasse Nielsen, in one of the Danish journals around 2013-2017; I cannot find my copy of the article at this moment. For many years Facit did not list this color, but they do now as Facit #8v3. Facit describes it as being on "thick soft white paper from Printing 2 or 3, not yet determined which". I agree with that except that in my opinion, the paper is "medium (but close to thin), very crisp (not soft), and it is white." AFA lists this color as #12.3b, being from Printing 3b and describes the paper as "medium". Regardless, this is an extremely scarce stamp. Facit and AFA only price it (as they always do) with gum, but the three Mint examples I have recorded having in the last 25 years have all been without gum; I do not think I have had an example with gum in my 48-year career. Facit 2022 value is SEK 8000 = $960 [12/2021] and AFA Specialized 2016 (most recent edition) value is DKK 6000 = $1020 [12/2021]. Well centered examples of this color are "rare". Despite the small crease, which is hard to see, this is by far the best looking example of this stamp that I have had in 48 years. It is really stunning with wonderful centering, brilliant color, and perfect perforations. An exceptional stamp that will help to build an exceptional collection.

While this type of cancellation is commonly seen on regular Icelandic stamps of this era, Danish incoming ship mail cancellations are rare on Icelandic Official stamps. Early Official mail leaving the country is extremely rare; Official stamps were likely only accepted on mail going as far as Denmark. I cannot recall having, in the last 48 years, any examples of an Official stamp this early bearing such a cancellation. Provenance: from the Roger A. Swanson collection, from of a page of six 50 aur stamps sold by Northland Auctions in 1995; subsequently in the Frederick H. Campbell collection, prior to my purchasing the group.
