45 varieties: AFA 1997 Specialized #26B with all four* of the AFA-listed plate varieties (on underlying AFA #13B) [1902 "I GILDI" red overprint on 5 aur Numeral, perforation 12.75] NH VF upper right corner margin 30-block (quarter sheet plus another row at bottom) containing the four* varieties. The underlying stamps were printed in four quarters with a 25-subject plate, thus this block shows all 25 cliché types/varieties. The additional row of stamps at bottom shows a much lighter colored overprint demonstrating that sheets were overprinted in two operations, top vs bottom -- examples showing a difference between top and bottom are all the more interesting. The four varieties are (per AFA): "x" Sheet Position 6 and 56 "Dent in upper frame line, cut off upper right corner, dent in lower frame"; "z" Sheet Position 37 "Left frame line bends inward at top and bottom"; "æ" Sheet Position 39 "Cut off lower left corner, upper left corner dented on left side"; and "ø" Sheet Position 38 "Short right leg of A of ISLAND". *For the 5 aur stamps, AFA also lists a variety "y" (right and left frame lines bend inward), but I have not been able to locate this variety in the sheet of perforation 12.75 stamps. On the unoverprinted stamps, AFA values the varieties at 4 to 13 times the normal value. However, it is very unusual to obtain all four varieties in one block (and those values are over 15 years old). Plus this block shows the overprint difference from the two overprinting operations. Very fresh and attractive; strong perforations.

46 varieties: AFA 1997 Specialized #27B with all four* of the AFA-listed plate varieties (on underlying AFA #7B) [1902 "I GILDI" red overprint on 6 aur Numeral, perforation 12.75] NH VF lower right corner margin 25-block (quarter sheet) containing the four* varieties. The underlying stamps were printed in four quarters with a 25-subject plate, thus this block shows all 25 cliché types/varieties. The four varieties are (per AFA): "x" Sheet Position 56 "White spot in front of POST, dent in right frame line near AUR, scratches in lower left corner"; "y" Sheet Position 60 "Small colored spot under N of ISLAND, dent in right frame line"; "z" Sheet Position 88 "Lower frame line dented under FRI and thinning to the right"; and "æ" Sheet Position 97 "Thin right frame line, lower frame line dented under IM (hard to see on positions 92 and 97)". *For the 6 aur stamps, AFA also lists a variety "ø" (Dent in right and lower frame lines near right corner), but I have not been able to locate this variety in the sheet of perforation 12.75 stamps. On the unoverprinted stamps, AFA values the varieties at 2 to 2.5 times the normal value (this compares to 4 to 13 times on the 5 aur stamps, due to the higher value to start with -- a 4 to 8 times multiple is more appropriate on the lower-value 6 aur overprinted stamps). However, it is very unusual to obtain all four varieties in one block (and those values are over 15 years old). Very fresh and attractive; strong perforations.

46 Full Sheet, Overprint Setting I, with plate varieties: AFA 1997 Specialized #27B with all four* of the AFA-listed plate varieties (on underlying AFA #7B) [1902 "I GILDI" red overprint on 6 aur Numeral, perforation 12.75] NH with centering varying from Superb to Fine as usual. The underlying stamps were printed in four quarters with a 25-subject plate, thus this sheet shows four sets of the 25 cliché types/varieties. The four varieties are (per AFA): "x" Sheet Positions 1, 6, 51, 56 "White spot in front of POST, dent in right frame line near AUR, scratches in lower left corner"; "y" Sheet Positions 5, 10, 55, 60 "Small colored spot under N of ISLAND, dent in right frame line."; "z" Sheet Positions 33, 38, 83, 88 "Lower frame line dented under FRI and thinning to the right."; and "æ" Sheet Positions 42, 47, 92, 97 "Thin right frame line, lower frame line dented under IM (hard to see on positions 92 and 97)". *For the 6 aur stamps, AFA also lists a variety "ø" (Dent in right and lower frame lines near right corner), but I have not been able to locate this variety in the sheet of perforation 12.75 stamps. The overprinting shows a horizontal shift between rows five and six, demonstrating that the overprinting was done in two operations, 50 stamps at a time. Very fresh and attractive; strong perforations, NO separations. Priced well below the break up value of the listed varieties and stamps.

The underlying stamps were printed in four quarters with a 25-subject plate, thus this sheet shows four sets of the 25 cliché types/varieties. The four varieties are (per AFA): "z" Sheet Position 22, 27, 72, 77 "Upper left corner cut off and white spot in front of ISLAND"; "y" Sheet Position 24, 29, 74, 79 "Broken right frame line near bottom"; "x" Sheet Position 35, 40, 85, 90 "Two blurred white spots after D of LAND"; and "æ" Sheet Position 42, 47, 92, 97 "Break in lower frame line under ST". 49 [1902 3 aur "Small 3" Perf 12.75 with Black I GILDI overprint] Mint, extremely lightly hinged, with Just-Fine centering. The reverse shows a "perfect" offset print of the overprint. Such offsets result from either: a) pressure being accidentally applied to a stack of just-overprinted sheets with still-wet ink; or b) from the previous printing impression occurring without paper in the press thus an overprint impression was instead made on the "tympan" (which is the surface under the paper normally being printed) and then the next sheet that was overprinted received a transfer back from the tympan. Offset impressions of the overprint are not "very scarce" on the I GILDI stamps, but they are interesting and collectible; I have only seen a few examples of an offset on this particular stamp. AIEP member and preeminent I Gildi expert Ellis Glatt viewed a high resolution image of the stamp in January 2024 and commented that the overprint is genuine in his opinion. This stamp is accompanied by a Jay Smith color image certificate with a "lifetime guarantee" from Jay Smith (details of the guarantee are available upon request). Scott #49 is the least costly of the "scarcer" I GILDI overprints, but it is still missing from the vast majority of collections. This is a very reasonably priced example with the extra bonus of the interesting offset variety.

49b INVERTED OVERPRINT [1902 3 aur "Small 3" Perf 12.75 with Black INVERTED I GILDI overprint] Mint hinged with F-VF centering. The inverted overprint of this "scarcer" I GILDI overprint is quite hard to find. This is an excellent example of this stamp.

50 Full Sheet, Overprint Setting I, with plate varieties: AFA 1997 Specialized #23B with all four of the AFA-listed plate varieties (on underlying AFA #22) [1902 "I GILDI" black overprint on 3 aur Large Numeral, perforation 12.75] NH with centering varying from Superb to Fine as usual. Especially nice about such a sheet is that the four types of the I GILDI overprint (thickness of the zeros: thin-thin, thin-thick, thick-thin, thick-thick) is represented in TWO 4-STRIPS (positions 34-37 and 84-87) and TWO 4-BLOCKS (15-16/25-26 and 65-66/75-76). These highly significant 4-strips and 4-blocks containing all four overprint types have really only recently started to come to the attention of collectors. This was the only single-color "oval" issue for which the underlying stamps were printed in a single pass through the press, using a 100-subject plate (instead of a 25-subject plate, printed four times). Thus each of the underlying plate varieties only exist from one position in the sheet (making them scarcer than plate varieties from the 25-subject plates). The four varieties are (per AFA): "x" Sheet Position 17 "Defective R of POSTFRIM"; "y" Sheet Position 4 "color spot on M of POSTFRIM"; "z" Sheet Position 53 "Upper frame line cut off, becoming thinner toward left side"; and "æ" Sheet Position 16 "Color spot in A of ISLAND". The overprinting shows a horizontal and vertical shift between rows five and six, demonstrating that the overprinting was done in two operations, 50 stamps at a time. On the unoverprinted stamps, AFA values the varieties at 9 to 10 times the normal value! Wonderful quality! Very fresh and attractive; strong perforations, NO separations and NO creases. Priced well below the break up value of the listed varieties and stamps.

50 varieties: AFA 1997 Specialized #24 with three of the four AFA-listed plate varieties (on underlying AFA #22) [1902 "I GILDI" black overprint on Large 3 aur Numeral, perforation 12.75] NH Fine top margin 8-block containing three varieties: "y" Sheet Position 4 "color spot in M of POSTFRIM"; "æ" Sheet Position 16 "color spot in A of ISLAND"; and "x" Sheet Position 17 "defective R of POSTFRIM". Unlike most of the Aur Numeral issues, this stamp was printed with a 100-subject plate, thus each variety only occurs once in the sheet are three times scarcer than most other varieties on these issues. Very fresh and attractive. AFA values normal overprinted stamps at one-quarter the value of unoverprinted stamps, thus the varieties are valued at a similar ratio; the AFA 1997 varieties value on unoverprinted stamps totals DKK 1600 = $280, thus the 1997 equivalent on overprinted stamps is around $70. However, it is very unusual to obtain all three varieties in one block (and that value is over 15 years old).

52 [1902 5 aur Perf 12.75 with Black I GILDI overprint] NEVER HINGED with F-VF centering. A wonderfully fresh and bright example that is as nice as the day it was printed. Such nice examples of this stamp are now quite hard to find. Accompanied by a Lasse Nielsen photo certificate stating that it is "Genuine and without repairs", "Unmounted mint", and a "Very fine" example. The Facit 2024 value for NH is SEK 7500 (around $750 11/2023). An excellent example of a very scarce stamp.

58 varieties: AFA 1997 Specialized #32B with two each of all four of the major plate varieties (on underlying AFA #15B) [1902 "I GILDI" black overprint on 40 aur Numeral, perforation 12.75] NH VF upper half of sheet 50-block containing two each of the four varieties AND the entire Overprint Plate Setting I of the overprints. The overprinting was done with a 50-subject plate, thus this shows all the overprint varieties of Setting I. The underlying stamps were printed in four quarters with a 25-subject plate, thus this block shows two of the 25 cliché types/varieties. Note that the underlying perforation 12.75 stamp was never regularly issued without overprint (such stamps are major rarities), thus the overprinted stamp is the only practical way to obtain examples of the plate varieties. The clichés changed somewhat between the perforation 14x13.5 printings and the perforation 12.75 printing; AFA does not show the varieties for the perforation 12.75 printing. The four varieties are (per AFA or JSA): "--" Sheet Position 5, 10 "Right frame line bent inward at bottom"; "y" Sheet Position 21, 26 "Top frame line broken near left corner"; "x" Sheet Position 32, 37 "Dent in top frame line above L"; and "æ" Sheet Position 35, 40 "Weak upper left corner". It is unusual to get the overprint setting in one block without having to buy a sheet. Strong perforations with NO separations. Very fresh and attractive.

59 [1902 "I GILDI" black overprint on 50 aur Numeral, perforation 12.75] LOWER LEFT corner margin 4-block with F-VF/Fine centering. A very fresh and nice example. Shows the watermarked letters in margin and also the posthorn watermark in the corner margin. It is helpful to know what the latter looks like because it is theoretically possible for it to show up on stamps (due to a paper / printing shift) and is quite scarce thus. 66 INVERTED WATERMARK [1902 40 aur Perf 14 x 13.5 with Black I GILDI overprint] NEVER HINGED with Fine centering. Wonderfully fresh and bright. This is one of the scarcest inverted watermarks of the non-rarity I GILDI overprints -- I have not recorded having an example in the last 25 years and I do not recall having an example in the 24 years before that. Neither Facit nor the AFA Specialized list a price for this inverted watermark stamp in NH condition -- Facit does list NH values for other inverted watermark stamps in I GILDI overprints (AFA does not provide any NH prices for any inverted watermark stamps). Facit 2022 value for HINGED is SEK 1600 [1/2022 $190] and AFA Specialized 2016 (most recent edition) value for Hinged is DKK 1200 [1/2022 $205]. In Facit, other I GILDI stamps with inverted watermarks have a 40% to 150% premium value! This stamp is very scarce with inverted watermark and "rare" thus in NH condition.
