[1863 8 skilling Arms] (Superb) solo use of perfectly centered stamp on 15 April 1867 DOUBLE WEIGHT envelope from STAVANGER to Throndhjem. (The 1867-issue 8 skilling stamp was not issued until October 1867.) First marked "1" in red for single weight, but changed in blue to "2" for double weight. While not a "rare" use -- this is one of two main reasons the stamp was issued -- it is extremely hard to find such a nice looking example. Clean, neat, and attractive. Certainly the best example I have had in 37 years.

, 15 x2 [1867 1 and 8 skilling] (Ave/Fine) on 11 March 1871 folded cover (no contents) from DRAMMEN to Red Wing, Minnesota, U.S. With sharp black "FRANCO" handstamp and red American transit postmark "CHICAGO PAID ALL / DIRECT" dated 8 April. The reverse bears a 12 March "CHRISTIANIA OMK" transit postmark and a German 3-line marking "WAMDRUP / 15 ... U / FLENSBURG" of the Prussian railroad Eisenbahnpostamt No. 17 -- Wamdrup (Vandrup) was the Prussian railroad border office between Denmark and Schleswig; Hamburg was the southern terminus of the same railroad line. This 17 skilling rate is RARE, with only TWO COVERS RECORDED, each with different franking. Previously only an 1870 example of this franking combination had been recorded. Very attractive and very rare.

, 15 x2, 18 x3 [1867 1 and 8 skilling, 1872 3 skilling Posthorn] (Ave/Fine/F-VF) Six stamps on a 2 April 1872 DOUBLE WEIGHT envelope from THRONDHJEM to Red Wing, Minnesota, U.S. Brilliant red FRANCO handstamp on front (lower left). The reverse bears a "CHRISTIANIA OMK" transit postmark and a German 3-line marking "KIEL / 9 4 LT / HAMBURG" transit postmark. The left side of the envelope is a little worn as is expected, but the stamps are perfectly fine. This 26 skilling double rate (with any stamp combination) is PREVIOUSLY UNRECORDED as of the NK 2010 brevregister. Furthermore, in the entire 1867-1877 time period, only four other double-weight covers to the U.S. have been recorded. There are a total of eight different stamp combinations, to the U.S., recorded for the 1867 / 1872 issues, the highest rate only being 16 skilling. Of those eight, five are only known in single examples; the other three are made up by a total of 13 covers, for a grand total of 18 combination covers to the U.S. This cover makes the totals: 9 combinations (6 unique), 19 covers, and the highest postage rate is 60% higher than previously recorded! The NK 2010 values for this section are highly variable due to some typos (one is supposedly just 50 kr -- not likely!) and the unique items have not come to market in many years. In fact, the more common items are "valued" much higher than the unique items because the more common items have been seen in the market in more recent years. This is a very valuable and desirable cover. A very attractive are rare cover that would be a highlight in any Norwegian postal history collection.

pair [1867 2 skilling Arms] (Average, typical for this stamp) on 3 June 1867 4 skilling domestic rate folded cover (no contents) from CHRISTIANIA to Throndhjem. Also with CHRISTIANIA BYPOST postmark to the side; apparently picked up by the local post carrier and transported to the post office. The 2 skilling stamp was issued primarily for local post use within Christiania -- uses such as this, while not "rare", are much scarcer than solo-franking local uses. Very neat and attractive.

x2 PLUS ONE STAMP MISSING [1867 8 skilling] (a VF centered pair, but with left side perfs trimmed off left stamp) on 26 March 1869 envelope from THRONDHJEM to Red Wing, Minnesota, U.S. With black "FRANCO" handstamp and red American Chicago transit postmark. Missing one-third of backside of cover. An 18 skilling rate is recorded for 1869; 17 sk in 1870 (probably existed in 1869 as well) and a 24 sk double weight rate in 1873 (which may have existed in 1869). Thus there are up to three possibilities for what the missing stamp could be -- all three of them are very scarce to rare, with as few as one example recorded. Actually quite attractive and at first one does not notice the missing stamp.
