36 Horizontal STRIP OF FIVE. Used F-VF, but right stamp with small hidden tear. 1895 cancels. Attractive and scarce. Facit 2022 value for a 4-block is SEK 1000! A scarce multiple. The dark spots on some perfs are not defects; they are from the writing on the envelope that this strip was on.

(Scott #40a) Facit/NK #53IVb-v5v6 [1890 10 øre 20 mm Posthorn: Plate IV Bright Red, Horizontal Watermark, Yellowish Paper] MAJOR RARITY: Used F-VF centered 4-BLOCK from sheet positions 89-90/99-100, containing cliche types 1-1/II-III or 1-1/2-3 (depending upon era of catalog publication): Types II/2 and III/3 are POST CARD CLICHES put into emergency use to replace damaged sheet stamp cliches. The post card cliches are about 1 mm taller and have different details of the small "10". According to the keeper of records of these blocks (to whom the existence of this block was previously unknown), this is ONLY THE SECOND RECORDED IVb (red) BLOCK containing these positions/types (both are blocks of four). There are also two known IVc (dull carmine) blocks that contain these positions/types, one block of six and the other a block of ten. My interpretation of private comments suggests that this also may be in the nicest quality of the four recorded blocks containing these post card cliches. There are NO defects. This block is from the Norman Gary collection; he was a long-time specialist in the 20 mm issues. I purchased his entire collection some years ago. I do not know when or where Norm obtained this block (he often made notes, but not in this case). As far as I can determine, it has been out of sight for at least 50 years and maybe as long as 70 years. He may have been the original discoverer of this block. The two bottom stamps, even as singles, are quite scarce, listing at SEK 1000 and 1800 in Facit 2021. However, in a block is quite a different matter. Facit assigns a 233x multiple to the value of a PLAIN used block of four -- blocks of this issue are truly quite scarce. Of course, that multiple does not directly scale up to an equivalent value just because the block contains the rare post card cliches, however, this is apparently ONLY ONE OF TWO KNOWN IVb used blocks containing these very scarce cliches! For provenance, I have left the block mounted on a piece of Norm Gary album page. An extraordinary block, in outstanding quality. This would certainly be an extremely important item in an exhibit or collection of the 20 mm Posthorn stamps.

(Scott #40a) Facit/NK #53IVb [1890 10 øre 20 mm Posthorn: Plate IV Bright Red, Horizontal Watermark, Yellowish Paper] Used F-VF/VF centered 4-BLOCK from sheet positions 56-57/66-67 (per Norman Gary) with cliche types 1-2/1-1 (new cliche numbering). HORTON 9 January 1891 postmarks. NO defects. Though this printing is common as single stamps, blocks are quite scarce. Facit assigns a 233x multiple for the value of a PLAIN used block of four!. Per NK, only 24 used 4-blocks, and 11 larger, of this printing have been recorded -- that is quite a small quantity for a stamp of which millions were printed! A handsome item! Facit 2021 value SEK 3500 (about $420 as of 9/2021).

(Scott #40) Facit/NK #53V [1891 10 øre 20 mm Posthorn: Plate V Dull Carmine] Used SUPERBLY centered 4-BLOCK. Though this plate had only one basic cliche type, Norman Gary identified it as having cliche sub-types 1-2/3-4 (likely old-system numbering, probably superceded) -- ALL FOUR SUB-TYPES IN ONE BLOCK! Three of the stamps have very minor creasing which is really only visible from the reverse. There is a small amount of sensible reinforcing at the right and left. Quite handsome, with CHRISTIANIA 2 November 1891 parcel post postmarks. Norgeskatalogen records only 15 used 4-blocks (and two used 8-blocks) -- that is a tiny quantity considering that nearly 6 million Plate V stamps were printed! However, the presence of all four sub-types in a single block likely puts this block in a completely different category! He may have been the original discoverer of this block, or at least the significance of containing all four sub-types. Though this printing is common as single stamps, blocks are quite scarce. Facit assigns a 200x multiple for the value of a PLAIN used block of four!. A very beautiful and scarce item! A normal used 4-block is listed by Facit as SEK 6000 (about $720 as of 9/2021) for normal centering -- with Superb centering, this may be the nicest looking known block!

(Scott #44) Facit/NK #54IV [1892 20 øre 20 mm Posthorn: Plate IV Blue] Used SUPERBLY centered 4-BLOCK with neat BERGEN 22 August 1892 cancellations. Very fresh and attractive with strong color. The lower right stamp has a couple shorter perfs at the upper right. Otherwise the block is in perfect condition and has strong perforations. Norgeskatalogen records only 15 used 4-blocks (and seven larger) -- that is a tiny quantity considering that over 2.9 million Plate IV stamps were printed! Due to postal rates at the time, it was uncommon to need/use blocks for postage except perhaps for parcel post, but parcel post uses typically damaged blocks. Though this printing is common as single stamps, blocks are quite scarce. Facit assigns a 300x multiple for the value of a used block of four!. A very beautiful and scarce item! A used 4-block is listed by Facit as SEK 6000 (about $720 as of 9/2021) for normal centering -- with Superb centering, this may be the nicest looking known block!
