June 29, 1854 California stampless address panel and part of outer leaf bearing oct-boxed blue PAID handstamp of Adams Express Co. Addressed to Gen. Denver, Secretary of State, Sacramento City, and docketed Dr. A Randall. Accompanied by notes and newspaper clippings from 1954 profiling the sender and his 90 year old granddaughter. Fascinating historical background: the state government moved to Sacramento on Feb 28, 1854, General Denver (for whom Denver, Colorado was named) resigned in 1855, Randall was shot in 1856 and his killer was hanged by vigilantes, etc., etc. A fascinating piece of early California postal and personal history!
