Scott #38L1 FORGERY "C" [1882 Chicago Penny Post local post, the only stamp issue] According to the online Farrell reference collection hosted by https://www.pennypost.org this example is FORGERY "C". In addition to the color of this stamp being brownish pink instead of orange brown, there are design differences such as the lower right "chin" of the G being slanted and lacking a bottom serif. This is an early (i.e. not modern) forgery. Many very early reprints also exist, but this is not one of those. Mint, without gum, nice appearance but appears to be expertly repaired in upper left corner and has some general aging. A very collectible local post forgery. |
