Scott #85B [1868 2c Jackson, Z Grill] Used with F-VF+ centering and an almost complete, well-centered "circle of Vs" carved cancellation with an open area in the center through which Jackson is watching us. (The cancellation is almost as if rifles pointed at him from all directions!) Very crisp and clear, fully black, engraved impression. The perforations are excellent -- much better than usual on this stamp -- and fully clear the design. While technically not "VF" centered, this is a "very fine" example! Accompanied by a 2021 Philatelic Foundation certificate and a 1983 APS certificate. An outstanding example -- I believe it in the 90th or higher percentile of quality for this stamp -- of a very scarce stamp that is seldom found undamaged and in such attractive quality. (Scott 2022 $1200.)

Scott #86 [1868 1c blue Franklin, E grill] Used with Average-Fine centering, but couple perforation tips creased, one short tip amended (only visible under 10x magnification), and minor toning on a couple perf tips. Other than those perf tips, a fundamentally sound stamp. Neat segmented pie wedges cancellation. Bright color and detailed engraved impression. A respectable example of a scarce stamp. (Scott 2022 $450.)

Scott #93 Very Thin Paper [1868 2c black Andrew Jackson, F Grill] Used with Average centering and light rings cancellation, but a "hidden" crease. A couple of the usual shorter perforation teeth. Gray-looking paper that is a combination of grayish paper and inadequate wiping of excess ink from the plate -- an interesting variety. An interesting example of the "Black Jack". The very thin paper is a Scott-listed variety. (Scott 2022 value $60 for very thin paper.)

Scott #94 [1868 3c red Washington, F grill]. Mint, FULL ORIGINAL GUM, moderately hinged, with F-VF+ centering. This example is remarkably fresh and the gum is incredibly nice for a stamp that is 168 years old (and it is original). Very clear grill impression. An outstanding example in seldom-seen quality! (Scott 2022 value $350, but this is much nicer than normally found.)

Scott #96 [1868 10c green Washington with F grill] Mint with Fine centering and three huge margins, but (expertly) regummed according to the certificate. I believe most people would assume the gum is original, but just very slightly disturbed. A couple slightly shorter perfs hardly worth mentioning. Accompanied by a 2015 William Weiss color certificate. Looks very nice! (Scott 2022 value $825 for no gum and $2500 with original gum.)

Scott #96 Deep Blue Green, Extremely Thin Paper [1867 10c green Washington, F-Grill] Used with Fine centering. Very distinct grill impression. Wonderfully deep color with perfect perforations. Such quality and perforations are especially scarce on such thin paper which is easily damaged. An extraordinarily sharp, proof-like, impression. Very scarce ILLEGAL USE AS A REVENUE STAMP: Deep Violet-Carmine manuscript cancellation "W. M. Dec 2 1869". While such uses are known, they are very scarce. It was illegal to use postage stamps to pay for revenue taxes/fees, just as it was illegal to use revenue stamps to pay for postage. To my knowledge, these uses are not listed in any catalog, but very interesting articles with many illustrations can be found at the excellent Richard Frajola website or the fascinating, must-see Revenue-Collector.com website. (Thank you to both of these devoted philatelists for sharing their extensive knowledge.) The Scott U.S. Specialized prices manuscript cancellations to about 1860, however, those are POSTAL cancellations, not revenue cancellations. The revenue use of classic postage stamps occurred mostly in the 1862-1872 period. Revenue-use cancellations will typically bear the taxpayers name or initials, along with a full date. On the other hand, postal manuscript cancellations are usually either just obliterations of some sort or are parts of town names, usually without a full date. Though some collectors scoff at manuscript cancellations, manuscript REVENUE cancellations are very scarce and deserve to be included in specialized collections. This example is remarkably attractive with terrific stamp color and sharply contrasting cancellation color. [Lest somebody think that such a cancellation could be added to an unused stamp, even a no-gum stamp lists for $825 in the Scott 2021 Specialized Catalogue.]

Scott #96 Blue Green [1868 10c green Washington, F Grill] Used with Fine+ centering with four fully clear margins and bold, well-centered "circle of Vs" carved cancellation. Extremely tiny tear next to a perforation tooth at upper left, and one shorter perforation tooth at right near bottom. Scott #97 [1867 12c black Washington, F grill] Used with XF centering and large to huge margins all around. A couple of the usual blunted perforations, but much nicer than usually seen.
