(76/105) A very odd item... At first glance it appears to be an imperforate mint example of #76, but it is not. After consulting with an expert on classic U.S., we believe this to be a manipulated plate proof (originally on card) from the new plate of 100 made for the 1875 reissues -- Scott 76P4. The stamp shows characteristics of the reissue plate of 100 -- see Brookman, Volume 2 and the note after 94P in the Scott 2006 U.S. Specialized Catalog. This paper of this proof has apparently been altered to be thinner and gummed, however, it was not perforated (as it would need to be to resemble the scarce reissue, #105). The printing quality and crispness of the design strongly suggests a proof impression. Whatever this item really is, it is a bit of an oddity and is offered AS IS as a spacefiller. Or maybe it is really something better?
