As a province of Finland, Åland used Finnish revenue stamps for payment of nationally mandated taxes. However, with greater self-government, starting in the 1920s, Åland had the right to levy taxes of its own and to issue its own revenue stamps. For the most part, Finnish revenue stamps that can be identified as used in Aland are very scarce -- this is due to limited applicable use (less commercial activity), cancellations that usually did not specify location, and stamps (perticularly engraved issues) that did not show cancellations clearly. Documents bearing Åland-issued revenue stamps are rare and most of the stamps are surprisingly scarce.
Ålandic and Finnish revenue stamps are cataloged (and listed here) by the 1998 Saarinen and Smith [me] catalog which is still in print and available from me. Listings that I have seen in more recently published general catalogs appears to have been taken, without permission, from our S/S work. Before that 1998 publication, I expected that the issuance of the book would result in more Åland revenues becoming available. That does not seem to have occurred. There are still many Åland revenues which I have never personally seen and more that I have seen but never actually had. Many of the 1998 prices have proven to be too low, though the relative rarity is about right with the adjustment that the rare items are even rarer than previously thought.
Often additional items are in stock but have not been put on the website or price list. All items are available for viewing on approval. Please let me know of your interest.
Finnish revenue stamps were used in Åland in all periods for nationally mandated taxes. With the exception of 1970s ammunition licenses, documents bearing Finnish revenues used in Åland are rare. Even single canceled stamps are very scarce due to: limited use; lack of location information in the cancel (true throughout Finland); and some stamp issues do not clearly show details of cancels.
These stamps are FINNISH revenue stamps with Åland cancellations and are identified by 1998 Saarinen and Smith numbers. Often I will have items available that are not listed here; please inquire.
