Aunus: Specialized Stamps: 1919 Issue
Scott numbers have been used unless otherwise indicated. All items are available for viewing on approval.
I only sell Aunus stamps that have been properly examined by an expert. Forgeries of the Aunus overprints are more common than the genuine stamps. I recommend that one never buy Aunus stamps without a recent photo certificate from a recognized Aunus expert. In my experience, bidding on or buying Aunus stamps that are not already accompanied by a proper certificate is often a waste of time and money.

NOTE ABOUT PRICING OF THESE AUNUS STAMPS: These prices include the cost of the accompanying certificate if/as noted in the description. For orders within the U.S. of $40 or more, shipping is free. The base price for my standard certificate for a single surcharged stamp is $24. (Experienced collectors will know that photo certificates generally cost a minimum of $25 to $40, PLUS shipping both ways.) However, most of the items offered in this section have a certificate with my lifetime (my life) guarantee -- such certificates are only available for stamps purchased from me. Furthermore, if you think these stamp prices are high compared to the catalog value, please note that while the catalog value is for a genuine stamp, it does not take into account the cost of having the stamp expertized. In my experience, a high percentage of Aunus stamps offered in the marketplace without certificates, even when offered by the most reputable of sellers, have fake overprints. The catalog editors base their values on the prices they see in the marketplace. However, a high percentage of those prices are for stamps that actually have fake overprints. If all the fake overprints were to magically disappear from the marketplace, the catalog values of Aunus stamps would rise considerably.

Old Scott #N1-4, New Scott #N13-16 listed in Scott under "Russia, Issued Under Finnish Occupation" [1919 5, 10, 20, 40 penni "Aunus" overprints] Used VF set of the first four values, philatelically used in BLOCKS OF FOUR. The 40p has the Type I overprint with shiny overprint ink; the other three stamps have the Type II overprint with dull overprint ink and thinner overprint impression. The 5p and 10p are upper right corner margin blocks; the 20p is a right margin block; and the 40p is a right margin block with a partial plate number "1-1919 N...." (which would have been "Nr. 26"). Each canceled with a centrally struck "SÄÄMÄJÄRVEN / POSTITOIMISTO" cancellation (from Salmi, Finland) dated 21 August on the 10p and 24 August on the others; that post office is stated to have operated until 26 August. The cancellations are black on the 5p and 10p, with slight mixing of violet on the 20p; and even more mixing of violet on the 40p (from using both black and violet inks). This is the one of the typical cancellations found on these stamps. A beautiful and rarely offered set of blocks! These stamps are offered without certificate (I have examined them and I guarantee them to be genuine). If you wish to have ONE "Jay Smith certificate with Lifetime Guarantee" for this set, that will cost an additional $80 (four separate certificates will cost $120) and take 2-3 weeks (the relatively low cost per stamp vs the high cost of a certificate is why I am offering this set without a certificate).
