Great Britain Scott #52, (SG #J96 = SG #110/111) [1867 9d bister, Watermark Rose, Plate 4 only] F-VF centered stamp (but with small defects mostly only visible under close inspection) with a bold and VF VERTICAL BARRED OVAL "C51" DUPLEX cancellation used at St. Thomas (Scott Classic #A26). This is a scarce stamp, with a Scott 2026 catalog value of $350 just for the basic stamp used in Great Britain. However, 9d stamps are VERY SCARCE used in DWI. Nice color for this stamp and with clear Rose watermark. Despite the small defects, this is a nice looking example of a stamp that is very seldom offered used in DWI. This is the only example of a 9d stamp, and thus the only Scott #52, used in DWI, that I can recall having in 52 years. And it is certainly the only 9d and/or Scott #52 used in DWI that I have recorded having since I started keeping specific records of these around 1995. Very scarce!

Great Britain Scott #54 Plate 4, (SG #J104 = SG #115/117) [1867 One Shilling, Green Corners] Used with Average (typical) centering, with a light and inverted strike of the VERTICAL OVAL "C51", probably NOT from duplex device (Scott Classic #A29 + plate 4). Plate 4 is a scarcer plate (at least when used in GB), with a Scott 2026 catalog value of $75 just for the basic stamp used in Great Britain. The high-denomination one shilling is hard to find used at St. Thomas -- especially this scarcer plate -- and this is an attractive example.

Great Britain Scott #54 Plate 6, (SG #J106 = SG #115/117) [1867 One Shilling, Green Corners] Used with Fine (typical) centering on a small piece, with a SUPERBLY STRUCK VERTICAL OVAL "C51" from a DUPLEX device (Scott Classic #A29 + plate 6). While Plate 6 is not a scarce plate (at least when used in GB), the Scott 2026 catalog value is $52.50 just for the basic stamp used in Great Britain. The high-denomination one shilling is hard to find used at St. Thomas -- and this has especially attractive appearance, both the stamp and the cancellation.

Great Britain Scott #43 Plate 11, (SG #J58 = SG #93/94) [1865 4d (bright) vermillion, Plate 13) WING MARGIN ON RIGHT, Used with Fine centering and NO defects. SUPERBLY STRUCK (but sideways) VERTICAL BARRED OVAL "C51" cancellation NOT from a duplex device. (Scott Classic #A13 + plate 11). Plate #11 is a scarcer plate, with a Scott 2026 catalog value of $72.50 just for the basic stamp used in Great Britain. An outstanding example -- with a wonderful cancellation, of the not-duplex type -- of the bright color shade. Such well-canceled examples are quite scarce!

This is a scarcer plate, with a Scott 2026 catalog value of $185 just for the basic stamp used in Great Britain. Great Britain Scott #43a Plate 13, (SG #J60 = SG #93/94) [1865 4d dull vermillion, Plate 13) HORIZONTAL PAIR, Used with VF centering, but both stamps defective (one stamp trimmed at top, other with piece missing at bottom). Despite the quality problems this is very nice with a XF-struck, fully dated, and almost-complete "ST THOMAS / A / PAID" cds and VERTICAL BARRED OVAL "C51" DUPLEX cancellation (Scott Classic #A13 + plate 13). Plate #13 is the least costly plate Scott 2026 catalog value of $47.50 just for EACH basic stamp used in Great Britain ($95+ total). A nice example of the muted color shade. Well-canceled pairs are quite unusual; despite the quality issues, this is a nice item.

Great Britain Scott #61 Plate 14, (SG #J38 = SG #143/144) [1873 3d rose, Watermark Rose, Plate 14] Average-Fine (typical) centered stamp with a neat VERTICAL BARRED OVAL "C51" DUPLEX cancellation used at St. Thomas (Scott Classic #A11), showing the "AS" and the "5" of the duplex device. The Scott 2026 catalog value is $92.50 just for the basic stamp used in Great Britain. However, 3d stamps are UNUSUAL used in DWI. Very attractive color for this stamp and with clear Rose watermark. Without any defects, this is a very nice example of a stamp that is not often offered used in DWI. Though the catalog value of the 3d stamp with St. Thomas cancellation is not much more than the common 4d stamp, any 3d used at St. Thomas is much, much scarcer than the 4d stamps. There have been only a few examples of Scott #61, used in DWI, that I can recall having in 52 years. And it is only the third Scott #61 used in DWI that I have recorded having since I started keeping specific records of these around 1995; and the other two were both Plate 16. Scarce and attractive!

Great Britain Scott #61 Plate 16, (SG #J40 = SG #143/144) [1873 3d rose, Watermark Rose, Plate 16] Average-Fine (typical) centered stamp, but with a tiny tear, with a fully-dated "(S)T. The Scott 2026 catalog value is $92.50 just for the basic stamp used in Great Britain. However, 3d stamps are UNUSUAL used in DWI. Very attractive color for this stamp and with clear Rose watermark. U.S. Scott #528 [1920 2c Washington Offset Type Va] Used with F-VF centering and partial ca.1920 U.S. VIRGIN ISLANDS Charlotte Amalie town cancellation. This stamp was issued in 1920, thus there is no doubt that the use is after the 1917 sale of the Danish West Indies to the U.S. Straight edge at right. Stamp from the right column of left pane of the printer 400-sheet. If this sheet had guidelines, it is not visible on this stamp. Originally only 18 of every 400 stamps could have had this feature. #528 (Plate Type Va) was printed in sheet sizes of 400 and 1600. Scott #525-536, the 1918-1920 Offset Printings, were printed in sheets of 400 and/or 800 and/or 1600, depending upon the Scott number and the plate number. (The Scott U.S. Specialized lists which sheet sizes were printed for each Scott number, located above #525.) I believe (but I have not seen examples or pictures) that the 800- and 1600-sheets contained replications of the 400-sheet layout, repeating the marginal characteristics of the 400-sheets. The 400-sheets were divided by cutting (thus natural straight edges) into panes of 100. On at least some of the issues, the cutting was along vertical and horizontal center guidelines which were terminated by arrows in the margins, however the arrows were normally too far from the edge of the stamp designs for an arrow tip to show in a stamp margin of a normally perforated stamp. Based on my limited observations, the marginal arrows are always present in the sheet layouts, but the guidelines may not be present on all issues or plates. Examples with straight edges on one of the four sides (left or right or top or bottom) each originally represented 18 out 400 stamps printed or each 4.5% of the issue quantity, but far fewer remain extant today. The positions in the printer sheet with corner straight edges each originally represented 1 out of 400 stamps printed or each 0.25% of the issue quantity; today examples are very scarce. (Many straight edge single stamps were used for postage instead of being saved in collections; furthermore Used single examples with straight edges were often discarded instead of going into collections. In some cases, for stamps "with value", the straight edges may have been removed by reperforating. As a result, today straight edge examples can be hard to find.) I think that collecting the different straight edge and guideline positions and multiples is quite challenging and rewarding. Attractive example; such canceled stamps are seldom offered.

U.S. Scott #499 [1920 2c Washington Flat Plate Type I. (Assumed to be the much lower cost Unwatermarked #499 instead of the very scarcer Watermarked #461).] Used with VF centering and Superb, complete, December 1919 U.S. VIRGIN ISLANDS "CHRISTIANSTED / SAINT CROIX / 2" duplex cancellation, on ample-sized piece. This use is after the 1917 sale of the Danish West Indies to the U.S. Straight edge at right and bottom. This is MOST LIKELY FROM A BOOKLET PANE, though it could also be the lower right position in the 400-stamp printer sheet (but that would be much scarcer). If this booklet pane or sheet had guidelines, they are not visible on this stamp. Many Mint straight edge single stamps were used for postage instead of being saved in collections; furthermore Used single examples with straight edges were often discarded instead of going into collections. In some cases, for stamps "with value", the straight edges may have been removed by reperforating. As a result, today straight edge examples can be hard to find.) I think that collecting the different straight edge and guideline positions and multiples is quite challenging and rewarding. USVI canceled stamps are seldom offered. This is a wonderful example in seldom-seen quality.

Scott #43 GROUP OF 9 ITEMS USED IN EVERY YEAR (1908-1916) OF NORMAL USE [1908 5 Bit Frederik VIII] Used VF / F-VF / Fine / Average -- including two horizontal pairs -- all with year-dated town cancellations. One from each year (1908-1916) of normal use. The 1916 cancel is almost Superb centered. All three major dated town cancellations are included: St. Thomas, Christiansted, and Frederiksted. While some catalogs indicate an issue year of 1907, it is likely that 1907 uses do not exist. While the 5 bit stamps were printed in December 1907, the catalogs indicate that they were received in DWI and placed into use in January 1908. I am sure that normal 1917 uses of this stamp must exist, but I cannot recall seeing normal 1917 uses (other than on philatelic dual-franked transition period covers combined with U.S. stamps). This denomination was replaced (by the King Christian X design) in March 1915. DWI was sold to the U.S. as of 31 March 1917. DWI stamps could still be used through 30 September 1917 but are extremely scarce, other than after 31 March on philatelic combination covers along with U.S. stamps. The 1908 example is (and must be) from Printing 1. All the others are from Printing 2. Even though virtually equal quantities (about 500,000 each) of Printing 1 and 2 were released, year-dated Printing 1 examples are remarkably hard to find. It would be an interesting challenge to find as many as possible year-date canceled examples of Printing 1 dated after 1907. The catalogs indicate that Printing 1, released in January 1908, has a yellow-green frame and a dark-green portrait and that Printing 2, released in August 1909, has a light-green frame and a green portrait. [Note that Facit and SG describe colors as portrait/frame while AFA and Scott describe colors as frame/portrait.] The reality is not as clear-cut. The frame of Printing 1 is distinctly yellow green, while the frame of Printing 2 is more in the range of green - light green - clear green - grayish green. However, the portraits of both printings (but especially Printing 2) vary in color shade. Examples canceled before August 1909 have to be from Printing 1. This mini-collection could be expanded by adding more Printing 1 stamps, completing the range of towns used in each year, adding the "very scarce" St. Jan and Kingshill dated town cancellations, adding more cancellation sub-types for each town (for example, note that the 1915 and 1916 cancellations have sans-serif year dates). [One could also seek a wider range of color shades for each printing. I notice that the 1914-1916 canceled stamps are a grayish-green color; could it be possible that there should be color sub-divisions within Printing 2 and might that mean that there were actually three printings?] This mini-collection is an excellent example of how a basically common stamp issue offers interesting possibilities for specialization.

Scott #43 [1908 5 Bit Frederik VIII] Used Horizontal Pair of Printing 2, with Average-Fine centering and almost Superb centered CHRISTIANSTED 17 January 191? cancellation. The year date is most likely 1913. Unusual PLATE VARIETY that is listed in the Frost Forlag (1981) DWI Specialized Catalog: "DA" connected on left stamp. Frost lists three connected "DA" varieties (large connection which is this one; less pronounced connection, and a connection at the crossbar of the "a"). Frost states that this version of the variety is from plate position 26 of Printing 2 sheets. Almost all the frame varieties on the DWI Frederik VIII and Christian X stamps exist on almost all the printings of all the stamps of the same denominations from both issues -- both issues used the same frame cliches. It would be a fun challenge to find each variety on all the printings of both stamps. This "DA connected" variety is very similar in nature and appearance to the AFA-listed "ND connected" variety; the AFA 2016 Specialized Catalog (most recent edition) value for that variety is DKK 400 (approx US$60 9/2025)! A scarce item that I have never before, in 52 years, seen offered!

It is listed in the Frost Forlag (1981) DWI Specialized Catalog (variety #10) as being from plate position 76 in the Printing 1 sheet and 61 in the Printing 2 sheet. Almost all the frame varieties on the DWI Frederik VIII and Christian X stamps exist on almost all the printings of all the stamps of the same denominations from both issues -- both issues used the same frame cliches. Scott #44 [1908 10 Bit Frederik VIII] Used with JUMBO MARGINS, SUPERB CENTERING, and extremely neat corner cancellation. This stamp is larger than usual, both in width and height -- and it has "perfect" centering. The cancellation is a "perfect" "(ST.) The three printings of this stamp can be hard to sort out, but based on the color shade and the specific type (the lettering is distinctive) of St. Thomas cancellation that was used fairly late, I believe this to be from Printing 3. This must be the nicest Used example of this stamp that I have had in 52 years -- surely scarcer than 1-in-1000!

Scott #28 "X Flaw" Frame Plate Variety [1902 8 on 10 cent Bicolor Bold Surcharge, Normal Frame] Mint hinged, with Fine++ centering. Very fresh with bright color! On Danish and DWI Bicolored stamps, the "X Flaw", also known [Engstrom] on DWI stamps as the as the "F-J Flaw" or "Type X", is a matrix cliche flaw (plate variety) caused when one of the cliche-making source dies was damaged. The specialized catalogs (at least AFA and Engstrom) actually list three other matrix flaws (AFA: RM 2A, RM 2B, and RM 2C), but not the "X" matrix flaw. However, the "X Flaw" is just as significant -- and similar in nature -- as the other three matrix flaws. The "X Flaw" is a cut in the left side of the right ball ornament in the top left corner of a normal-frame stamp. (If it exists on an inverted-frame stamp, it would be a cut in the right side of the left ball ornament in the lower right corner of the inverted-frame stamp.) Of the 12 DWI Bicolor printings (plates) that contained the "X Flaw", the "X Flaw" exists in several positions in each sheet -- the positions vary with the stamp issue and specific printing. Because of the multiple positions, the "X Flaw" can also be combined with other frame flaws (varieties) and oval flaws (varieties). Though the "X Flaw" is not listed by AFA or Facit, it is a very much sought after variety by collectors of both Danish and DWI Bicolored stamps. A nice example of a seldom-offered DWI variety.

Scott #28 Combination of Two Oval Plate Varieties [1902 8 on 10 cent Bicolor, Bold Surcharge, Normal Frame] Mint, lightly hinged, with Fine centering. Very fresh, with nice color and "perfect" perforations. AFA-listed PLATE VARIETY #21v and also listed in Facit as #28v16 (extrapolated from the variety listing on the underlying stamp) which is a "white line extending to the lower right from the bottom of the E of VEST". This is repeating matrix type OM 2 (OM = oval matrix variety) that is found on up to 8 positions in the sheet. However, this particular sheet position 83 also shows an additional major oval variety "missing thin outer line around oval, in THREE LOCATIONS, above VE and SK and below S of CENTS". This variety is clearly documented in the Lasse Nielsen Bicolor handbook (in Volume 3) as variety OF 17 (OF = oval flaw variety). Excellent color and nicely shows the brown gum, but the paper color is still fairly light (nicer than many). The brown gum is still present because the brown gum stamps often did not stick very tightly to the covers and it is hard to soak off the stamps; I recommend that the brown gum should not be soaked off. The brown gum was officially applied by the Christiansted post office after humidity or seawater [reportedly variously in the literature] damage on the trip from Denmark caused the sheets with original white gum to stick together. This is an attractive example, without any defects, but with the limited margins, it is priced very low. A F-VF example would be $235 and a VF example would be $360!

Scott #1a [1855 1 cent Dark Carmine, Imperforate, Yellow Gum] Used with F-VF with margins and appearance (three margins clear, one very large), but with small tear and a thin at the upper right corner (only visible from the reverse). Light, centrally struck 5-rings-with-dot mute cancellation and nice color. The yellow gum is fully intact; which is somewhat unusual, but sometimes the yellow gum did not adhere well to the covers. It is important to leave any yellow (or white) gum intact if it is present because it confirms the identity of the stamp. The yellow gum was officially applied by the St. Thomas post office after humidity or seawater [reportedly variously in the literature] damage on the trip from Denmark caused the sheets with original white gum to stick together. This is an attractive example, without any defects, but with the limited margins, it is priced very low. This is a scarce stamp. The 2024 Facit value is SEK 4500 (approx US$ 450 9/2025) and the 2026 Scott value is $375.

Scott #2 [1866 3 cent Rose, Imperforate] Used with VF centering; three ample to large margins, fourth margin just clears design (this issue had small inter-stamp spacing on the plate). This example has an incredibly clear, proof-like impression; it must have been from very early in the printing! Very neat 5-ring mute cancels in upper left and upper right corners; the center dot is not visible on these strikes. Such corner-canceled examples are unusual. By regulation, these early stamps were supposed to center-canceled. Probably less than 1% of extant examples have corner cancels like this. Wonderful appearance!

Scott #40a INVERTED FRAME [1905 "5 BIT 1905" Surcharge on 4 cent Bicolor with Clear Blue, Perf 12.75] Mint, lightly hinged, with F-VF centering. A very fresh and attractive example with great color and "perfect" perforations. This overprint exists on both of the Perforation 12.75 printings (with Greenish Blue VS with Clear Blue). The Greenish Blue printing only exists with an inverted frame in sheet position 51. The Clear Blue printing (this one) exists with the inverted frame in both position 51 and in the entire bottom row, positions 91-100. This stamp is from the bottom row, which can be detected by the slight fuzziness of the bottom frame line and the bottom of the oval. Despite the relatively modest value, this stamp is remarkably hard to find! An excellent example!

Scott #39 [1905 5 franc Ship in St. Thomas Harbor] Looks "Used" with XF-Superb centering, however the "cancellation" was probably added to a no-gum Mint stamp. Scott #12 [1873 14 cent Bicolor, Normal Frame] Mint with Fine centering (this is a little better than typical for this stamp), but with a pulled perforation tooth at bottom. The gum is original, but disturbed (probably from removal of an old hinge). No other defects. While one might hope for better centering and perforations, this 14 cent stamp is notoriously difficult to find well centered and without defects. Examples without defects are quite unusual for this stamp which printed on extremely thin paper. (The paper of this stamp is always extremely thin and fragile, thus perforation problems or much more severe damage is quite common). Approximately 1000 sheets (100,000 stamps) were printed, but 90,158 stamps were destroyed by the post office in 1883, thus the net quantity that could have existed of the normal frame stamps is approximately 9,645. Of that quantity, many were lost or destroyed over time, especially due to the very thin paper and the fact that these were used either on overseas mail or on internal postal accounting documents (which were mostly destroyed). This is a very reasonable looking example of a the "rarest face-different stamp" of the Danish West Indies! Without the pulled perforation tooth, a Mint Hinged example with this centering would be $690!

Scott #15 [1895 "10 CENTS 1895" Surcharge on 50 cent "Bicolor"] Mint hinged with F-VF centering and "perfect" perforations, but only a small amount of gum remaining. The underlying stamp has an unusual plate (cliche) variety listed by Lasse Nielsen (in his Bicolor handbook) as C112 which was in position 69 of the sheet (first printing; only the first printing is known overprinted). The central petal of the lower right corner ornament is broken off with the broken part still present and appearing as a "dot". (A similar "dot" is also known on cliche variety C113, but THIS C112 variety also has a cut in the central petal of the lower left corner ornament.) Only 732 sheets of this stamp were overprinted, thus originally only 732 examples of this variety existed; certainly only a small fraction of that quantity remain extant today. Regarding cliche varieties of this stamp, which are seldom found, Lasse Nielsen only identified varieties in 26 of the 100 cliches of this stamp. The variety numbering, such as C113, does NOT meant to suggest that there are that many varieties -- there are only 26 in total; instead the numbering scheme identifies what area of the stamp contains the variety. Because the 50 Cent DWI "bicolor" stamp is different from all the other Danish and DWI bicolor stamps (it is only a single color and the cliches were originally made from the master die of the DWI 6 Cent postal card indicia, which has "shells" in the crown instead of "stars"), collecting the different cliche varieties and overprint varieties is especially interesting. I have two examples of this particular variety from the same estate, but otherwise, these are the only two examples of this variety that I have recorded having in 52 years!

Scott #24 [1902 "2 CENTS 1902" Local Surcharge with small letters, Perf 12.75, Inverted Frame] BLOCK OF FOUR, Mint, very lightly hinged, with F-VF centering. The block is from sheet positions 2-3/12-13 and is identifiable as such by cliche varieties that only exist positions 2 and 13, per the Lasse Nielsen Bicolor handbook. The previous owner stated believed that the overprint was from Setting 2, but I have not tried to confirm that. As usual, there are many broken or deformed characters in the overprint, including three different styles of the numeral "1" in the date. The "2" (denomination) of the upper right stamp has a flat front of the "nose" that is quite distinct. Very fresh and attractive with brilliant colors. The break-up value for the four single stamps is $46!

Scott #11 [1877 (1878 Printing) 12 cent Bicolor, Red Lilac and Yellow Green, Perf 14 x 13.5] Mint -- this has NEVER BEEN HINGED but has some of the typical light gum matting from how the stamps were stored at the post office in the DWI climate -- with SUPERB centering and "perfect" perforations for the issue (the couple teeth that look shorter are thin teeth caused by bent perforation pins), BUT WITH HIDDEN TEAR at top center. Wonderfully fresh with great color. A beautiful example that appears to be in wonderful quality. The paper of this printing is so thin and so crisp that most examples have defects, such as this one. For normal quality, the Facit NH value is SEK 1200 and the Hinged value is SEK 550 -- this is MUCH nicer! Because of the Superb centering, if this did not have the tear, it would easily fetch $110.

Scott #14b, Facit #23a [1887 "1 CENT" Surcharge on 7 cent violet and yellow (Print 1) Bicolor] Mint with full original gum, with hinge remnant. Average-Fine centering that is fairly typical for this stamp. Under magnification, the perforations do NOT touch the frameline, but they are close. A couple of the perforations at top are slightly blunted, but otherwise there are no defects. Most examples on the market of Scott #14b are damaged and/or without gum; very few are in sound condition! Because most examples on the market seem to be in sub-standard quality (and many not described as such), I believe that this has led #14b to be undervalued in the catalogs. This is a reasonable nice example of a scarce stamp. Of this printing, Facit says "at most 10,000" examples were printed. However, only a small fraction of that quantity have survived in Mint condition without major defects. Scott 2025 value $190.

12 [1873 14 cent Bicolor, Normal Frame] Mint with Average-Fine centering (typical for this stamp). Full original gum, slightly glazed, with modest hinge remnant. There is a pulled perforation on the right side, but by way of explanation, note that the corresponding perforation tooth on the left side is oversized (caused by a bent perforating pin), suggesting that the pulled perforation on the right side was the result of a similar oversized tooth on the adjacent stamp on the right. Otherwise, this stamp is without the usual serious defects. While one could hope for better centering, this 14 cent stamp is notoriously difficult to find well centered. The lack of major defects is quite unusual for this stamp printed on extremely thin paper. A wonderful example with great color, perfect perforations, almost perfect centering, and wonderful freshness. It can be hard to find undamaged examples of this stamp; it was printed on very thin paper and is often found damaged. The locally-applied overprint was printed with a plate of only 50 positions, struck twice on the sheet; there are many variations in the overprint characters from stamp to stamp. This example is unusual in that it does not show any flaws of the overprint characters, but it is interesting in that the "9" is quite fat. Seldom offered in such nice quality!

Great Britain Scott #53 10d Plate 1 (1867 issue) VF centered, wing margin on right side, with a couple blunted perforations on the wing side, but otherwise without any of the usual defects. With a very crisp and attractive VERTICAL OVAL "C51" that appears to be from a standalone device (though it is hard to measure since it is only a partial strike, the height of the C51 appears to be only 7.5 mm) (Scott Classic #A27 + plate 1). Plate 1 is the only plate of this stamp recorded as used at DWI. The Scott 2024 catalog value is $475 just for the basic stamp used in Great Britain!! This stamp (and denomination generally) is "extremely scarce" used at St. Thomas -- and this example has particularly attractive appearance, both the stamp and the cancellation. This is the only example of #53, or any 10d stamp, used at DWI, that I have recorded having in 50 years -- and the basic stamp is "very scarce" normally used in GB! A handsome item of exceptional rarity.

Great Britain Scott #43 4d Vermillion, Plate 9 (1865 issue) F-VF centered stamp (with one short perf) with nearly full and VF HORIZONTAL BARRED OVAL "C51" cancellation used at St. Thomas (Scott Classic #A13 + plate 9). Plate #9 is a slightly scarcer plate, with a Scott 2024 catalog value of $72.50 just for the basic stamp used in Great Britain. Excellent color for this plate. This is the Type B with the C51 slanting (especially the "vertical" line). This horizontal-format cancellation example was struck sideways, thus allowing the full "C51" to be visible (which is not usually the case). This is first example, without a major defect, that I have recorded (I may have failed to record one back in the 1970s-1980s) having in 50 years, of a C51 cancel on a Plate 9 of this stamp.

Great Britain Scott #43 4d Vermillion, Plate 10 (1865 issue) Fine centered stamp (with one pulled perf) with nearly full and VF (but inverted) HORIZONTAL BARRED OVAL "C51" cancellation used at St. Thomas (Scott Classic #A13 + plate 10). Also with slight show-through of an ink mark on reverse which is actually a transfer from the ink of the address. Plate #10 is a much scarcer plate, with a Scott 2024 catalog value of $150.00 just for the basic stamp used in Great Britain. Excellent color for this plate. This is the Type B with the C51 slanting (especially the "vertical" line). This is first example that I have recorded (I may have failed to record one back in the 1970s-1980s) having in 50 years, of a C51 cancel on a Plate 10 of this stamp.

Great Britain Scott #43 4d Vermillion, Plate 13 (1865 issue) Fine centered stamp (with rounded upper right corner perforation tooth) with bold and VF VERTICAL BARRED OVAL "C51" DUPLEX cancellation used at St. Thomas (Scott Classic #A13 + plate 13). Plate #13 is the least costly plate Scott 2024 catalog value of $47.50 just for the basic stamp used in Great Britain. Excellent color for this plate. This was very obviously struck by a duplex device. While only the "C5..." shows, the CDS portion shows "...AS" confirming the St. Thomas DWI use, but the code letter area in the CDS is not visible on this example. A handsome example.

Great Britain Scott #70 4d Pale Olive "Sage" Green, Plate 15 (1877 issue) Used Fine with typical centering, but with rounded upper right corner and a couple other defects seen from the reverse. Superbly struck VERTICAL BARRED OVAL "C51" cancellation used at St. Thomas (Scott Classic #A15 + plate 15). Plate #15 is a slightly scarcer plate, with a Scott 2024 catalog value of $375 just for the basic stamp used in Great Britain. This was struck by a DUPLEX device; this can be determined by the 9 mm height of the C51 (Engstrom, DWI Mails). A nice looking example, despite the defects. This is only the second example that I have recorded (I may have failed to record one back in the 1970s-1980s) having in 50 years, of a C51 cancel on a Plate 15 of Scott #70 (and it also had defects). This stamp is remarkably scarce used at DWI because this stamp was issued in 1877 and the use of British stamps at DWI stopped as of 31 August 1877.

15 [1895 "10 CENTS 1895" Surcharge on 50 cent Bicolor] Mint, modestly hinged, with F-VF centering. A very attractive example with very nice quality and appearance. It can be hard to find undamaged examples of this stamp; it was printed on very thin paper and is often found damaged. The locally-applied overprint was printed with a plate of only 50 positions, struck twice on the sheet; there are many variations in the overprint characters from stamp to stamp. This example is unusual in that it does not show any flaws of the overprint characters!

11 INVERTED WATERMARK [1877 (Print 2 1878) 12 cent Bicolor, Perf 14 x 13.5] Mint, lightly hinged, with F-VF centering. Other than the rounded lower right corner perforation tip, this stamp has perfect perforations. Wonderful color and freshness. The inverted watermark is quite scarce; both AFA 2016 Specialized (most recent edition) and Facit 2024 give it a 3x value over a normal example; DKK 1200 ($180) and SEK 1500 ($150). This stamp issue was printed on extremely thin, crisp paper, thus many (most?) examples have become damaged over the last 146 years. An outstanding example.

Great Britain Scott #43a 4d Dull Vermillion, on very thin paper, Plate 7 (1865 issue) VF stamp (one short perf) with nicely centered and VF HORIZONTAL BARRED OVAL "C51" cancellation used at St. Thomas (Scott Classic #A13 + Plate 7). Plate #7 is a somewhat scarcer plate, with a Scott 2024 catalog value of $100 just for the basic stamp used in Great Britain. Excellent color for this plate and unusually well-centered, though inverted, cancellation strike. The paper is so thin and the watermark is so distinct that the watermark can be seen from the front of the stamp! This is only the second example, without a major defect, that I have recorded having (in 50 years) a C51 cancel on a Plate 7 of this stamp -- and the only undamaged example on Plate 7 with the horizontal barred oval version of the cancellation.

J1 Printing 3, AFA #P1.3, AFA Plate IIIa (third printing) [1902 1 cent Postage Due] NEVER HINGED XF/VF/F-VF vertical upper right corner margin 10-block. Printing / Plate confirmed by color and paper. This printing exists with a light to dark range of color shades; this example is at the light end of that spectrum. Cliche types (left side type 4, right side type 5) per DuBois (unpublished 1997). [In early philatelic literature, both AFA Plates III/IIIa and III/IV were described as "Plate II", without a small dot above the I of DIEN.] Very fresh and bright appearance, with perfect perforations, however, four stamps show small age spots on the reverse. Blocks of this printing / plate are quite unusual, especially marginal blocks. Of the Cents postage dues, this printing / plate is one for which no sheet is in the postal museum and a sheet is otherwise not recorded to exist. (Thus blocks are important to determine the location of cliche varieties.) I believe that this and three other blocks of this printing / plate are the first that I have been able to offer in 50 years! This block shows further "flyspeck" varieties for these positions (and possibly these types with further confirmation of consistency across all positions of the types) which could be added to the listing by DuBois. Specifically, in addition to all ten stamps showing small undescribed type differences, the plate positions 19 and 20 stamps (second row of this block) shows a prominent "spray" of color dots around the CENTS. A beautiful example of a scarce multiple and also a philatelically important item. Upon request at time of purchase, the purchaser may receive a draft copy of the 1997 unpublished research paper by DuBois. This is free, but may not be reproduced or distributed in any form whatsoever without my permission. I am the copyright holder.

J1 Printing 3, AFA #P1.3, AFA Plate IIIa (third printing) [1902 1 cent Postage Due] NEVER HINGED F-VF/Fine horizontal right margin 12-block. Printing / Plate confirmed by color and paper. This printing exists with a light to dark range of color shades; this example is at the dark end of that spectrum. Cliche types (from left to right: 5,1,2,3,4,5) per DuBois (unpublished 1997). [In early philatelic literature, both AFA Plates III/IIIa and III/IV were described as "Plate II", without a small dot above the I of DIEN.] Very fresh and bright appearance. Blocks of this printing / plate are quite unusual, especially marginal blocks. This block shows further "flyspeck" varieties for these positions (and possibly these types with further confirmation of consistency across all positions of the types) which could be added to the listing by DuBois. Because the denominations were individually added to a 5-strip on an intermediate lithographic stone that was then reproduced to make the full plate/stone -- as demonstrated by the 4 Cent denomination with five vastly different figures of "4" -- 5-strip examples, showing types 1-5, of all the denominations, are very much sought after. A beautiful example of a scarce multiple and also a philatelically important item. Upon request at time of purchase, the purchaser may receive a draft copy of the 1997 unpublished research paper by DuBois. J7 [1905 30 bit Postage Due] (Mint) Uncanceled / Unused with VF+ centering. Either Mint no gum or Used without cancellation. A large percentage of these postage due stamps were used on envelopes containing incoming shipping documents (posted from ships in the harbor to local merchants) and those envelopes were very often not canceled. The stamps are perfectly fine, but cannot really be called Mint or Used. I price such no-gum DWI postage due stamps at a fraction of the (lower) Mint value. Scott #1a, Facit #1b, AFA #1B [1855 3 cent Carmine with YELLOW GUM] Used with VF centering; three full to large margins and one close but clear margin. Extremely lightly canceled with small VIOLET line of a type I have not previously seen. However the yellow gum stamps are known to have more colored cancellations (I had a wonderful blue ring cancellation about ten years ago) than the other gum types. The clean and crisp Carmine color of this stamp is the original gum as they were printed -- you would never know that by looking at a Scott #1 brown gum stamp. This is a #1a: The burelage I/A (lines upper left to lower right) are visible (a 10x magnifier is always needed on these) in the lower left corner. Furthermore, the stamp has VIRTUALLY FULL GUM; it had been adhered to an envelope and was removed without soaking, leaving a very small amount of paper adhered, but mostly full YELLOW gum. An outstanding and unquestionable example of a scarce stamp!

10 Grayish Blue and Blackish Brown, Print 6. Facit #10f. AFA #11b-6. [1876 (1888 Print 6) 10 cent Bicolor, Normal Frame, Perf 14 x 13.5] Mint, without gum as usual, BLOCK OF FOUR with VF-XF centering. Due to seawater leakage damaging the entire Print 6 shipment from Denmark to DWI, Print 6 is rare with original gum (as noted by Facit and in the literature). The only with-gum examples are likely to have come from the Hagemann research holding from the postal archives. The catalog values of this printing are for without-gum examples. This block is from positions 25-26/35-36 (detailed plating information is included). AFA-listed PLATE VARIETY 11w (+DKK 150) in Position 35: Large white spot on lower left foot of R in ØER. Facit 2024 value for singles is SEK 900 and for a normal-centered 4-block SEK 4000 (7/2023 about US$ 400). This example has centering that is tremendously better than usually seen on Print 6 -- and any blocks of Print 6 are scarce. Priced below break-up value!

10 Grayish Blue and Blackish Brown, Print 6. Facit #10f. AFA #11b-6. [1876 (1888 Print 6) 10 cent Bicolor, Normal Frame, Perf 14 x 13.5] Mint with F-VF+ centering, but WITH GUM that is either regummed or disturbed original gum. It is perhaps possible that this is disturbed original gum or locally applied regumming for postal use, but either way, it is not undisturbed original gum. Due to seawater leakage damaging the entire Print 6 shipment from Denmark to DWI, Print 6 is rare with original gum (as noted by Facit and in the literature). The only fully-with-gum examples are likely to have come from the Hagemann research holding from the postal archives. The catalog values of this printing are for without-gum examples. Facit 2024 value for without-gum singles is SEK 900 (7/2023 about $90). This is an unusual case in that even if this example is philatelically regummed, the gum could be soaked off it without diminishing the catalog value. This example has centering that is much nicer than is usually seen on Print 6. Very attractive example.

27 Plate Variety [1902 2 on 3 cent Bicolor Bold Surcharge, Inverted Frame] Mint, extremely lightly hinged, with F-VF centering. PLATE VARIETY from Position 31 of this printing, but despite being at least as obvious as some of the other varieties, it is not (yet) catalog listed: White hook on the underside of the D of DISKE and white spot to upper left of large 3. This variety is clearly documented in the Lasse Nielsen Bicolor handbook (in Volume 3) as variety OF 9. With only 350 sheets printed with this overprint, only 350 examples of this plate variety originally existed with this overprint. This particular stamp seemed to have been more subject than usual to high losses due to tropical staining, perhaps due to postal storage methods. Thus I suspect that, at most, less than 150-200 examples of this stamp can still exist today; and probably only, at most, half that number in Mint (or NH) condition still exist. Because this variety has not been well-cataloged, the quantity of surviving examples could be much smaller.

9b [1878 7 cent Red Lilac and Orange, Print 2, Bicolor, INVERTED FRAME] Used with Fine centering, but with tiny defects and tiny repairs. Exceptionally strong color -- rarely seen with such nice color. The cancellation, which is sans-serif and shows "...SSTED", is Christianssted (misspelled with SS); the final digit of the year date is 0, probably 1890. This cancellation device was in use from 1888 onward and is quite scarce (Daka 1997 gives it a DKK 400 premium). Because the 7 cent Print 2 stamps did not have a lot of postal uses, they were available in the post offices for quite some period of time, thus an apparent 1890 use is not that unusual. Used examples of this inverted frame stamp are quite hard to find and when found are often defective. This would otherwise be $135. This example is offered at a very low price.

2 PRIVATELY ROULETTED????? [1866 3 cent Rose, Imperforate?] Mint, without gum, F-VF with three margins, but with internal paper break in the back of the stamp (a lateral tear within the plane of the paper). This example appears to be rouletted, and AFA and DAKA do list two different private roulettes (4.5 and 9.5), but only in Used condition and on cover. Because it would be relatively easy to alter a normal imperforate example to look like a rouletted example, I cannot state definitively that this is a genuine private roulette -- however, I also cannot state that it is a fake roulette. This could be the real thing and if so, it would be quite rare and valuable, especially since Mint examples do not seem to have been recorded. (I obtained it in a group of DWI duplicates, not recognized for what it may be, from a collector who obtained it in a group of stamps also not recognized for what it might be.) This example may not be genuine rouletted stamp, thus it can only be offered AS-IS. Do you feel lucky?

18, Facit 16a, Yellow-Brown and Greenish Blue [1901 4 Cent Bicolor, Perf 12.75, Normal Frame] Used horizontal PAIR with VF centering (right stamp with rounded corner perf) and nearly complete CHRISTIANSTED 6 July 1905 cancellation. On small piece with left stamp "marked off" by red crayon. This type of marking-off is usually seen when an invalid stamp has been used (such as an obsolete / demonetized stamp, foreign stamp, charity label, or a re-used stamp). In this case, the stamps were valid postage -- I can only guess that the marked-off stamp was considered excess (overpaid) and the postal clerk was "preserving" it for future use by marking it off. I do not recall previously seeing this type of situation from DWI or any country [I welcome further information]. Very attractive and interesting!

1a [1856 3 cent Dark Carmine with Yellow Gum] Used VF (4 margins, close but clear at lower left) with virtually all of full yellow gum still intact. A very nice example, with none of the typical discoloration. (Keep in mind that the #1a yellow gum and #1 brown gum were official regumming because the original shipment #1b with white gum was damaged by sea water. Some minor discoloration is typical and expected.) That this example has virtually full gum is a little unusual, but it was properly used -- the gum did not stick very well if not heavily moistened, so stamps fairly easily popped off the envelope. Very fresh and bright example with light cancellation. Facit 2020 value SEK 3800 or about $495 (5/2021).

51-58 [1915-16 5-50 bit Christian X] NH Average / Fine / F-VF / VF matched set of PLATE NUMBER BLOCKS with #11-D, except for the 30 bit with has plate number 50-O (11-D does not exist for the 30 bit). The 15 bit block is both remarkably well centered and 11-D is the scarcest of the three printing with a significant premium. The 30 bit is also very well centered and 50-O has more than twice the value as the other printing (50-D). Some of the others are also scarcer as 11-D. A very unusual set; these are seldom offered.
