Scott #14b, Facit #23a [1887 "1 CENT" Surcharge on 7 cent violet and yellow (Print 1) Bicolor] Mint with full original gum, with hinge remnant. Average-Fine centering that is fairly typical for this stamp. Under magnification, the perforations do NOT touch the frameline, but they are close. A couple of the perforations at top are slightly blunted, but otherwise there are no defects. Most examples on the market of Scott #14b are damaged and/or without gum; very few are in sound condition! Because most examples on the market seem to be in sub-standard quality (and many not described as such), I believe that this has led #14b to be undervalued in the catalogs. This is a reasonable nice example of a scarce stamp. Of this printing, Facit says "at most 10,000" examples were printed. However, only a small fraction of that quantity have survived in Mint condition without major defects. Scott 2025 value $190.

15 [1895 "10 CENTS 1895" Surcharge on 50 cent Bicolor] Mint, lightly hinged, with XF centering. A wonderful example with great color, perfect perforations, almost perfect centering, and wonderful freshness. It can be hard to find undamaged examples of this stamp; it was printed on very thin paper and is often found damaged. The locally-applied overprint was printed with a plate of only 50 positions, struck twice on the sheet; there are many variations in the overprint characters from stamp to stamp. This example is unusual in that it does not show any flaws of the overprint characters, but it is interesting in that the "9" is quite fat. Seldom offered in such nice quality!

Scott #15 [1895 "10 CENTS 1895" Surcharge on 50 cent "Bicolor"] Mint hinged with F-VF centering and "perfect" perforations, but only a small amount of gum remaining. The underlying stamp has an unusual plate (cliche) variety listed by Lasse Nielsen (in his Bicolor handbook) as C112 which was in position 69 of the sheet (first printing; only the first printing is known overprinted). The central petal of the lower right corner ornament is broken off with the broken part still present and appearing as a "dot". (A similar "dot" is also known on cliche variety C113, but THIS C112 variety also has a cut in the central petal of the lower left corner ornament.) Only 732 sheets of this stamp were overprinted, thus originally only 732 examples of this variety existed; certainly only a small fraction of that quantity remain extant today.Regarding cliche varieties of this stamp, which are seldom found, Lasse Nielsen only identified varieties in 26 of the 100 cliches of this stamp. The variety numbering, such as C113, does NOT meant to suggest that there are that many varieties -- there are only 26 in total; instead the numbering scheme identifies what area of the stamp contains the variety. Because the 50 Cent DWI "bicolor" stamp is different from all the other Danish and DWI bicolor stamps (it is only a single color and the cliches were originally made from the master die of the DWI 6 Cent postal card indicia, which has "shells" in the crown instead of "stars"), collecting the different cliche varieties and overprint varieties is especially interesting. I have two examples of this particular variety from the same estate, but otherwise, these are the only two examples of this variety that I have recorded having in 52 years!

Scott #15 [1895 "10 CENTS 1895" Surcharge on 50 cent "Bicolor"] Mint, no gum, VF centering, but rounded lower right corner. SHIFTED WATERMARK showing only tiny bits of the crown watermark, but showing large portions of the marginal sheet letters watermark "...PO..." from the left margin of the sheet. (The previous owner had determined this to be from sheet position 61.) While records are not kept of stamps showing the marginal letters watermark, it is extremely scarce on this issue (and on most DWI stamps); I do not think I have ever before had, in 52 years, an example on this stamp. Attractive with dark color.

Scott #24 [1902 "2 CENTS 1902" Local Surcharge with small letters, Perf 12.75, Inverted Frame] BLOCK OF FOUR, Mint, very lightly hinged, with F-VF centering. The block is from sheet positions 2-3/12-13 and is identifiable as such by cliche varieties that only exist positions 2 and 13, per the Lasse Nielsen Bicolor handbook. The previous owner stated believed that the overprint was from Setting 2, but I have not tried to confirm that. As usual, there are many broken or deformed characters in the overprint, including three different styles of the numeral "1" in the date. The "2" (denomination) of the upper right stamp has a flat front of the "nose" that is quite distinct. Very fresh and attractive with brilliant colors. The break-up value for the four single stamps is $46!

27 Plate Variety [1902 2 on 3 cent Bicolor Bold Surcharge, Inverted Frame] Mint, extremely lightly hinged, with F-VF centering. PLATE VARIETY from Position 31 of this printing, but despite being at least as obvious as some of the other varieties, it is not (yet) catalog listed: White hook on the underside of the D of DISKE and white spot to upper left of large 3. This variety is clearly documented in the Lasse Nielsen Bicolor handbook (in Volume 3) as variety OF 9. With only 350 sheets printed with this overprint, only 350 examples of this plate variety originally existed with this overprint. This particular stamp seemed to have been more subject than usual to high losses due to tropical staining, perhaps due to postal storage methods. Thus I suspect that, at most, less than 150-200 examples of this stamp can still exist today; and probably only, at most, half that number in Mint (or NH) condition still exist. Because this variety has not been well-cataloged, the quantity of surviving examples could be much smaller.

Scott #28 "X Flaw" Frame Plate Variety [1902 8 on 10 cent Bicolor Bold Surcharge, Normal Frame] Mint hinged, with Fine++ centering. Very fresh with bright color! On Danish and DWI Bicolored stamps, the "X Flaw", also known [Engstrom] on DWI stamps as the as the "F-J Flaw" or "Type X", is a matrix cliche flaw (plate variety) caused when one of the cliche-making source dies was damaged. The specialized catalogs (at least AFA and Engstrom) actually list three other matrix flaws (AFA: RM 2A, RM 2B, and RM 2C), but not the "X" matrix flaw. However, the "X Flaw" is just as significant -- and similar in nature -- as the other three matrix flaws. The "X Flaw" is a cut in the left side of the right ball ornament in the top left corner of a normal-frame stamp. (If it exists on an inverted-frame stamp, it would be a cut in the right side of the left ball ornament in the lower right corner of the inverted-frame stamp.) Of the 12 DWI Bicolor printings (plates) that contained the "X Flaw", the "X Flaw" exists in several positions in each sheet -- the positions vary with the stamp issue and specific printing. Because of the multiple positions, the "X Flaw" can also be combined with other frame flaws (varieties) and oval flaws (varieties). Though the "X Flaw" is not listed by AFA or Facit, it is a very much sought after variety by collectors of both Danish and DWI Bicolored stamps. A nice example of a seldom-offered DWI variety.

Scott #28 Combination of Two Oval Plate Varieties [1902 8 on 10 cent Bicolor, Bold Surcharge, Normal Frame] Mint, lightly hinged, with Fine centering. Very fresh, with nice color and "perfect" perforations. AFA-listed PLATE VARIETY #21v and also listed in Facit as #28v16 (extrapolated from the variety listing on the underlying stamp) which is a "white line extending to the lower right from the bottom of the E of VEST". This is repeating matrix type OM 2 (OM = oval matrix variety) that is found on up to 8 positions in the sheet. However, this particular sheet position 83 also shows an additional major oval variety "missing thin outer line around oval, in THREE LOCATIONS, above VE and SK and below S of CENTS". This variety is clearly documented in the Lasse Nielsen Bicolor handbook (in Volume 3) as variety OF 17 (OF = oval flaw variety). Scott #40 Rough Perforation Variety AND Lopsided T Variety, AFA #33x [1905 "5 BIT 1905" surcharge on 4 cent Bicolor] BLOCK OF FOUR, NEVER HINGED, with XF centering. Wonderfully fresh and attractive. Rough Perforation Variety that is seldom offered on this issue. Also, an Overprint Variety on the UPPER LEFT STAMP: Top of "T" tilted downward toward left; thicker and longer on right side. Occurs in four positions in the sheet: 42, 47, 72, and 97 [which is strange because this suggests that the overprint plate was of 50 but DWI Mails states that the overprint plate was of 100]. The Lopside T variety is but unpriced in AFA and Unlisted by Facit. The rough perforation variety is unlisted in both catlalogs. The block is offered well below the break-up value of $236 for four NH VF normal stamps -- and that does not take into account the scarcity of the varieties, nor does it take into account the XF centering!

Scott #40a INVERTED FRAME [1905 "5 BIT 1905" Surcharge on 4 cent Bicolor with Clear Blue, Perf 12.75] Mint, lightly hinged, with F-VF centering. A very fresh and attractive example with great color and "perfect" perforations. This overprint exists on both of the Perforation 12.75 printings (with Greenish Blue VS with Clear Blue). The Greenish Blue printing only exists with an inverted frame in sheet position 51. The Clear Blue printing (this one) exists with the inverted frame in both position 51 and in the entire bottom row, positions 91-100. This stamp is from the bottom row, which can be detected by the slight fuzziness of the bottom frame line and the bottom of the oval.
