Modern Plate Blocks: With the 1 July 1933 (Scott #220) switch to a new printing press that produced engraved stamps, the appearance of the numbering (which was not present on the first several stamps of the engraved era) changed to black numerals that were printed by a separate numbering unit instead of actually being part of the printing plate. The different plate number represented different printing runs, thus they are also useful as indicators of potentially different color shades, paper types, and gum types. When fluorescent paper stamps (yellow or yellowish-white under long-wave UV light) started to be printed in 1962, the post office kept track of which printings were on fluorescent paper by starting over with plate numbers at 001 and prefixing the numbers with the letter "L" (for lumogen). [The purpose for the "L" distinction is that the post office needed to be able to easily identify the fluorescent sheets of stamps because at first the post office only sold the fluorescent stamps in certain larger cities where facer-canceler machines were in experimental use. The machines could detect the fluorescent stamps.] Non-fluorescent stamps continued to be printed with the original series of plate numbers, to the extent that non-fluorescent stamps were issued. Thus while both versions were being printed, two series of numbers were in use.

Non-L-number plate blocks are listed and priced in the AFA Specialized Catalog along with each stamp listing. That catalog also states which L-numbers were used for each stamp, but for the actual listing and prices of L-number plate blocks, one must refer to the AFA 4-Block Catalog [as of 2024 the last edition released was dated 2017, but earlier editions are also useful]. I stock the AFA Specialized Catalog and I also can supply some edition of the AFA 4-Block Catalog. Collecting the plate blocks is a rewarding challenge; though their cost is often quite modest, some plate numbers are far scarcer than most dealers or collectors realize. I am usually able to supply on approval most plate blocks since the 1930s -- please inquire.
