Denmark: Tete-Beche And Gutter Pairs: Special Issues

Starting in the 1930s, stamps for booklets were printed in special sheets (panes) that include vertical tete-beche pairs, with and without gutters. Five of these special sheets were available for general sale and thus exist mint and postally used. These "standard" issues are listed by the Scott Catalog and all other catalogs. There are also a couple other modern tete-beche pairs that were issued as part of normal booklet issues.

In 1971, postal officials sold to collectors such pairs from 19 other sheets; these are NOT listed in the Scott Catalog, but ARE listed in the Facit Catalog (after #101) and the AFA Catalog (immediately before the Official Stamps listings). While canceled examples can exist, their cancels would have to be 1971 or later, and are not considered used in the proper time period. Of these special issues, the quantities released ranged from 13 sheets to 311 sheets, thus they range from scarce to rare.

The sheet layout for typical small-size stamps was the usual sheet size of 100 (10 x 10), but the third and eighth rows were blank. The 8 rows with stamp designs have the designs oriented as follows: sheet rows 1-2 inverted, rows 4-5 upright, rows 6-7 inverted, rows 9-10 upright. This allows, per sheet, for 20 tete-beche pairs with gutter, but only 10 tete-pairs without gutter -- that is why the without-gutter pairs are always scarcer and have a higher price. There were a two larger-size stamps involved (semi-postal issues), they only exist with gutter.
