Denmark 1965-1967 50 øre (print edition "84" issued in 1965 or 1966) POSTAL STATIONERY ENVELOPE USED IN THE FAROES. VF condition with VESTM(ANHAVN) (date not clear) Faroe cancellation, used to a pharmacy in Thorshavn. This is undoubtedly used in the Faroes and is part of a large cache of correspondence to this pharmacy that came to the market in the (1990s?). Covers bearing stamps from this time period and this correspondence are "common", however, POSTAL STATIONERY USED IN THE FAROES IS SURPRISINGLY SCARCE! I have had less than five postal stationery envelopes used from the Faroes in the post-WWII era through 1967 when production of Danish postal stationery envelopes were discontinued. ACTUAL item. |

ca.1940-1942 WWII-Era "THORSHAVN BY VAABEN" (Thorshavn Town Coat of Arms) collector series label picturing a red axe. There seems to be only very limited published information about this series of "collector labels". (If a catalog of them is known, I would like to learn about it.) According to the DAKA #7 "Greenland Cinderellas" catalog, a series of 256 different collector labels was issued in the 1940-42 period: "During the German Occupation the Copenhagen tobacco dealer P. Jensen issued a series of 256 labels with Danish provincial coats of arms." (For Greenland two designs were issued, a polar bear and a kayaker.) Though not listed in any catalog that I know of, for Faroe, also two designs were issued, this Thorshavn Town Coat of Arms design picturing a red Axe, and a "FÆRØ AMT" label picturing a Ram. A specialist in Danish-area labels reports that several different collector albums were produced for this series of labels during the WWII years, all of them have the publisher name Aage Brünner with a Copenhagen address. Albums believed to have been printed earlier only have a space for the "Ram" label, whereas the albums believed to have been printed a little later have spaces for both label designs. The "Ram" labels that I have been able to record, including reports from clients, have a silver-gray frame, thinner paper, and are ungummed. The Thorshavn "Axe" labels I have been able to record have a dark greenish-gray frame, are on much thicker paper and have yellowish gum. Other printings may exist. These Faroe labels are seldom seen and are virtually unknown to most collectors of Faroe stamps. Sheets and blocks seem to be particularly scarce. For this label design, due to the height and width of the perforating machine rows and columns vs the size of the design, the centering is only F-VF or less on at least half the stamps in every sheet; VF examples are hard to find. Danish 1923 official national Christmas Seal. Design with Faroe theme: Faroese provincial coat of arms at the time; scene of 10 rowers rowing an ocean-going rowboat by the name of THORSHAVN, with background of dramatic islands. The rowboat appears to represent the boats that were used for the "skyds system" of mail delivery and transportation of governmental and church officials. Mint, lightly hinged with Superb centering. Quite hard to find with perfect centering. ACTUAL item. |
