1941 blank-value FRANCO BETALT. Postage Paid provisional handstamp used to supplement the Faroe #2-6 surcharges. In addition to surcharging the stamps that became Faroe #2-6, the Faroe post office had these "postage paid" handstamps locally made in 5, 10, and 20 øre denominations. (For increased flexibility, the denomination was removed from a couple of the handstamps, creating blank-value handstamps such as this example.) These handstamps were applied to unfranked mail brought to the postal counters, usually when there was a quantity of mail. The town postmark was struck along side. However, most of the use was on four types of cards, mostly money collection (COD) cards, such as this example, titled "Postindkassering" cards; typically used to collect monies due, not involving a package. ONLY this type of card has three boxes on the right side: 1) At top for the postage and sending date postmark (but there are normally no sending dates when the FRANCO BETALT handstamp was used. 2) At middle for the receiving postmark of the addressee post office. 3) At bottom, for the postmark date on which the address post office returned the card to the originating post office (after which the originating post office would pay the original sender). Essentially "reverse money orders", the "Postindkassering" cards were used to collect money owed, insurance premiums, club dues, etc. For the most part, all that still exists are these "coupons" from the right side of the card; the post office discarded the rest of the card after a specified amount of time. Use of the blank-value handstamp in Thorshavn ran only one month: 10 May 1941 through 9 June 1941. Wowern stated use started 10 May and that date has followed into Daka, however Hopballe reported use without denomination started later, on 23 May (but I have previously had a 20 May example). Because the PORTO BETALT handstamps did not "look like postage stamps" and because they were most often used on business mail, printed matter, or postal forms, they were apparently usually discarded; rather few examples have survived. This example has a blank-value PORTO BETALT handstamp on a BROWN (unusual color) "Postindkassering" money collection card coupon, likely used within Thorshavn. It was received at the addressee post office on 30 May 1941 and was sent back to the originating post office on 10 June (a day after the use of the blank-value handstamps ended). There is no postmark on the backside, thus the originating post office is not known, but this very likely originated at Thorshavn (otherwise it would be a "rare" and costly item). VF++ quality strike and excellent overall condition. A very useful article about Franco Betalt provisional handstamps and the different types of cards/coupons is included with this item.

The Type I overprint was issued 2 May 1941 (the second printing was issued 28 May 1941). Type I has 12 mm spacing between the 20s, measured from right side to right side of the "0" numerals in the overprint (Type II has 13 mm spacing). The Type II stamps are scarcer. Completely NH and absolutely no defects, but offered at a very low price because of the centering. For comparison, Type I NH VF would be $70!

Scott #2 Type I with HIGH OVERPRINT, Facit #4Iv3, Faroe Daka GF10 2017 #4B [1941 20 øre WWII Provisional Surcharge on 1 øre Numeral] Used with VF-XF centering and with a very neat, partial (THORS)HAVN cancellation. The high overprint variety is not just a random shift; it is a major variety listed in all the specialized catalogs. The overprint is positioned with the "20" numerals on top of "DANMARK". The catalogs indicate that about 600 examples were issued and are now quite difficult to find. This example of the variety is the first one in 53 years that I have encountered in a collection where it was not identified as being the variety. It is theoretically possible that it was used on a letter before collectors discovered that the variety existed and that I may have been the first person since 1941 to recognize it for what it is. A very handsome example!

Scott #3 [1941 20 øre WWII Provisional Surcharge on 5 øre Numeral] Used with VF centering and neat, partial starless (uds) FUND(ING) cancellation (Daka GF10 2017 #34.02). The DAKA value for just the cancellation is DKK 150 (6/2026 US$23) on ANY single stamp; it is scarcer on the surcharged stamps). This example has an OBVIOUS UNLISTED OVERPRINT VARIETY (even though similar varieties are listed on other of these stamps): "Right vertical bar shorter at bottom". The basic Used VF stamp without an interesting variety or a scarce cancellations sells for $32! Whether collected for the basic stamp, the overprint variety, or the cancellation, this is a very pretty example of this WWII-era stamp with a great price.

Scott #5 Type I [1940 50 øre overprint on 5 øre Wavy-lines Numeral; 1940 Overprint Type I] Used with VF centering and with a neat, correct type of cancellation in use at that time. A very attractive example of a scarcer stamp that is missing from many collections. (I guarantee that this stamp is genuine. It is not a stamp that normally requires a certificate, however, if you wish to have a certificate, for the reduced cost of only $20 I will supply a Jay Smith certificate with "Lifetime" Guarantee. Allow an extra week for processing.) Overprint Type I has 12.75 mm spacing, a crisp impression, and solid black numerals. Overprint Type II has 13+ mm spacing, a slightly doubled-looking impression, and partially UNfilled numerals. The measuring is done from the right edge of the left "0" the right edge of the right "0". This is great example of a stamp that can be quite hard to find with such nice appearance.

65 Olive COLOR ERROR [1981 10 oyru Rune Stone] NH VF single in Yellowish Olive Green instead of the normal Gray Green. Our late friend and Faroe modern-issues expert Art Quarles, who had many personal contacts inside the Faroe post office, was "absolutely sure" that this color difference existed when the Faroe post office received their supply from the stamp printer and that it was not a color changeling. I last had a few examples of this error back in 2007 and all very quickly sold for $250 each. Recently I obtained a few more examples, but I now have only one example still available.
