DRUMSÖ Shipping Company Stamp: Lape #28 [1914 10 penni multicolored]This ferry service, founded by businessman Julius Tallberg, served the island of Drumsö (now within greater Helsinki), from 1914 to 1936, with a purpose-built steam ferry also named Drumsö and pictured on the stamps. The ferry could travel in both directions without turning around. The stamps were used on letters (and parcels) May 3, 1914 through May 31, 1915 when a government mailbox was placed on the island; after that time the stamps could only be used for parcels. Used examples are rare. The stamps are all similar design, lithographed, perforated 11.5, and were printed in different sheet sizes for different issues. Imperforates or proofs exist of some (rare). Of all the Finnish shipping company stamps, the Drumsö stamps are certainly the most artistic and colorful. Perhaps because of the proximity to philatelic life in Helsinki, the Drumsö stamps are more available than most of the Finnish shipping company stamps, but can still be quite hard to find. The handbook by Connell states that this stamp was printed in sheets of ten (2x5), but based on my observations, either the sheet size was larger or there was more than on version of the lithograph plate (stone). Printing this 4-color stamp would have been a very complex process.SINGLE STAMP, NEVER HINGED with F-VF+ centering. Very fresh.

Based on my observation that all the sheets of this stamp that I have examined have identical plate varieties in the diagonally opposite stamps, these likely were printed with two strikes of a two-subject plate using a technique called "run and turn", thus creating the tete-beche result. Connell also stated that "It is clear that the 25 penni had several printings... [which can be] subdivided into ... smooth ... [vs] ... vertical streaking. Within the smooth (glassy) gum, I have recorded yellowish vs white paper and more and less intense color (which may or may not be a different printing).LOWER RIGHT CORNER, YELLOWISH PAPER, INTENSE COLOR, GLASSY GUM, SINGLE STAMP, NEVER HINGED with XF centering. DRUMSÖ Shipping Company Stamp: Lape #33 [1920 (?) 5 mark gray]This ferry service, founded by businessman Julius Tallberg, served the island of Drumsö (now within greater Helsinki), from 1914 to 1936, with a purpose-built steam ferry also named Drumsö and pictured on the stamps. The ferry could travel in both directions without turning around. Perhaps because of the proximity to philatelic life in Helsinki, the Drumsö stamps are more available than most of the Finnish shipping company stamps, but can still be quite hard to find. The handbook by Connell states that this stamp was printed in sheets of 25 (5x5). All examples of this stamp that I have observed are perforated all four sides; sheet margins present top and bottom (and probably on sides, but not observed). The Lape 2012 catalog states that these stamps are violet, but the Connell handbook states that they exist in Dull Gray and Dull Brownish Gray. I have never seen a violet example. Based on other situations in philately (such as Sweden Scott #15) that were printed in violet ink that was unstable and very quickly turned into gray, I believe that these either changed in a similar way or were originally printed in gray. Connell does not describe the paper; all the examples that I have seen are on yellowish paper. Connell does state that the gum is "streaky"; all the examples that I have seen have had vertical streaking due to how the gum was applied. As of July 2025, I have previously only seen one or two singles; I have now seen a few more examples, but I have never seen a sheet and I believe that even singles are "very scarce".YELLOWISH PAPER, DULL YELLOWISH-BROWNISH GRAY COLOR, STREAKY GUM, SINGLE STAMP, NEVER HINGED with XF centering. As of July 2025, I have previously only seen one or two singles; I have now seen a few more examples, but I have never seen a sheet and I believe that even singles are "very scarce".YELLOWISH PAPER, DULL YELLOWISH-BROWNISH GRAY COLOR, STREAKY GUM, TOP SHEET MARGIN SINGLE STAMP, NEVER HINGED with XF centering. Very fresh.

Mourning Stamp Facit Type I, Yellowish Paper (long serif on 1, shiny black not dull). NEVER HINGED with VF centering. Left sheet margin example with partial marginal text imprint in red -- this printing has white sheet margins (instead of black). The gum of the marginal tab is slightly aged, but the gum of the label itself is NOT aged. Based on the paper color visible in the front lettering of the label itself, this is the scarcer yellowish-paper version (which also has a slightly less-shiny black surface). This is a scarcer version.

213 [1937 2 mark Gustaf Mannerheim 70th birthday] with 4 June 1937 HANGÖ / HANKO cancellation, which is the first day of issue of this stamp. Black frame and text "1867-1937". Full paper size of 95 x 114 mm. A couple very light bends and a few spots. Some of the references that I have seen state that cancellation date on these cards were backdated (but it was made in the late 1930s or early 1940s). To my knowledge, it is the earliest Finnish souvenir card type item. Normally $14.

Label: 300th Anniversary of the founding of the city of Jakobstad / Pietarsaari (the Swedish vs Finnish spellings) by Ebba Brahe, with a portrait of Brahe. Extremely high quality engraving and printing; printed exactly like the postage stamps of the era and very likely produced in the same facility. Dark Brownish Red (perhaps almost Lake color) on white paper that appears to be identical to stamp paper of the era, with gumming also like stamps. Vertical format, perforated 14. While this label is sometimes found on 1952 covers related to the Jakobstad anniversary, I do not recall ever in 51 years being able to offer Mint examples. NEVER HINGED with Fine centering.

"Fredrika Runeberg 1807 - 1879" essay (proposed, but unaccepted, stamp design) prepared ca.1947. [Runeberg was a Finnish author, novelist, and one of the first female journalists in Finland. Wikipedia states Runeberg was the "first Finnish author to critically analyze the status of women, at home and in the society."] Brownish Red, engraved, on perforated, gummed stamp paper. Known to have been printed in sheets of 100. Exact date of "issue" not known to me, but this essay is very similar in style and printing to the issues of 1947-1952. I strongly suspect that this essay was printed by the Finnish stamp printer of the time. This subject and design was not accepted. NH VF single stamp.

1961 Europa (1960) Souvenir Card (looks more like a souvenir sheet). This souvenir card/sheet was distributed by Thomas De La Rue stamp printers at Stampex 1961 stamp show and pictures four proposed, unadopted designs (i.e. essays) for the 1960 Europa issue, along with an image of the approved design (lower right) in single-color gray (not one of the colors of the two issued bi-color stamps, thus making this design an essay as well). Designer names are in small text in the bottom margin of each stamp image. The approved design, by a Finnish designer, was used for all the Europa countries in 1960. Though it is gummed, this item was not valid for postage (the approved design has a thin white line through the denomination). The backside bears additional text and a serial number (different number on each). There was a time when these were regularly seen, but they are now only occasionally found. NH VF, perfect condition.

The Swedes often did not backstamp registered mail such as this, but the violet "Aviserad" postal stamps on the front indicates that the local Swedish post office notified the recipient that they had mail to pick up; the marking is actually very scarce. Nice round stamp dealer advertising label on reverse. I have only had a few examples of this scarce FDC in 43 years.

1944 Progressive Color Proof set of 8. Mint VF ungummed set of PAIRS. Scarce WWII-era issue; I do not recall previously having a PCP set of this issued. Listed by the Scandinavian Christmas Seal Catalog as the set of eight singles for DKK 80 = US$14 (thus $28 for pairs), but they seem to be a lot scarcer than that!

213 [1937 2 mark Gustaf Mannerheim 70th birthday] with 4 June 1937 HANGÖ / HANKO cancellation, which is the first day of issue of this stamp. Black frame and text "1867-1937". Full paper size 95 x 114 mm. Some of the references that I have seen state that cancellation date on these cards were backdated (but it was made in the late 1930s or early 1940s). To my knowledge, it is the earliest Finnish souvenir card type item.

1999 Finnish Roads officially issued combination postal cards / maximum cards set of four. Maximum card official #42-45. The maximum (picture) card side exists with either perforation 14 stamps or the very scarce perforation 12.75 stamps. The perforation 12.75 stamps were "accidentally" created by the stamp printer who was also the manufacturer of the first day covers, maximum cards, and other such philatelic products; they were not specified by the postal authorities -- the decision was made by the stamp printer. Because the vast majority of the perforation 12.75 stamps were used on canceled philatelic products, and were not generally sold in mint condition, they are very rare in mint. [The Scott catalog value for mint (or used) perforation 12.75 stamps is impossibly low; the 2012 Facit value is SEK 2400 (US$340) for mint set or pane or for a canceled complete pane -- even so, they are "impossible" to obtain.] To the best of my knowledge, virtually all the canceled single perforation 12.75 stamps come from FDCs or maximum cards -- supplies of those are extremely limited. When the maximum card sets were made, the set components were handled randomly, with the result that most sets seem to contain a MIX of perf 14 and perf 12.75 stamps. This MINT POSTAL CARD SET bears the perforation 12.75 Scott #1104a-1170b COMPLETE SET of single canceled stamps on the maximum card side. This is "rare" as a complete set.
