Finland: Perfins: Private
Though never seen by most collectors, Finland does have a few perfins. (Perfins are perforated initials punched into stamps for security and control purposes, usually to prevent stamp theft by employees.) The perfins used in Finland were all used by private companies; there are no official perfins from Finland. Finnish perfins have been at least discussed and listed, but not priced that I am aware of, from time to time in various catalogs and publications. For example, the 2010 LAPE Specialized catalog has an interesting 3-page discussion and listing of them. Unlike the perfins of many countries, Finnish perfins greatly increase the value of stamps upon which they are found. Most perfin designs can theoretically exist right- and wrong-reading (viewed from the front side or from the back side, depending upon custom) and/or upright or inverted. By design or positioning, perfins can also have vertically oriented lettering in four possible positions and diagonally oriented lettering (Finland has one of those, "TKT") in eight possible positions. All such possibilities are collectible differences. I am always interested in buying Finnish and all Scandinavian perfins, both on stamps and on covers. This listing is just a small sample; stock is changing all the time and they usually sell before I get time to list them. Please request approvals.

88 Orange [1918 20 penni "buff" M-17 Saarinen Lion, Unwatermarked] Used with VF centering and a 1919 cancellation, with "ASEA" PERFIN. Viewed from backside it is vertical, reading downward from the left. LAPE 2010 describes this as position IVb; that all 8 possible positions are known to exist. It was used by the huge Swedish company (which had a Finnish office in Helsinki and probably other places in Finland) ASEA, or "Allmänna Svenska Elektriska Aktiebolaget" (General Swedish Electrical Limited Company); and that as of 2010 was recorded in use from March 1914 through April 1937. From my own observations, it is known on many different stamps (including Swedish use on Swedish stamps), but even though it is the most common Finnish perfin pattern, they are still quite scarce.

88 Orange [1918 20 penni "buff" M-17 Saarinen Lion, Unwatermarked] Mint, without gum, VF centered, with "S." PERFIN. Viewed from backside it is sideways, reading upwards from the right. LAPE 2010 describes this as position IIb and that all 8 possible positions are known to exist. It was used by "Keskinäinen Vakuutusosakeyhtiö Sampo", located in Turku / Åbo (but likely used this perfin at multiple locations around the country) and as of 2010 was recorded in use from September 1913 through March 1926. From my own observations, it is known on many different stamps, but even though it is the second most common Finnish perfin pattern, they are still quite scarce. Uncanceled examples are especially scarce.
