Finland: Shipping Company Stamps: Various
These interesting stamps are often called Ship Letter Stamps. They were sold by the agents of ship operators and paid the postage on letters and/or parcels carried by commercial ships (mostly inland and coastal steamers), usually when government mail service was not available. They are usually listed by the specialized editions of the Finnish catalogs Lape and Norma. The primary handbook reference (which is in English) is available from me and is in stock available here. These scarce stamps seldom make it to my website or price lists and are usually only available via approvals. Please be sure to let me know of your interests.

DRUMSÖ Shipping Company Stamp: Lape #28 [1914 10 penni multicolored] This ferry service, founded by businessman Julius Tallberg, served the island of Drumsö (now within greater Helsinki), from 1914 to 1936, with a purpose-built steam ferry also named Drumsö and pictured on the stamps. The ferry could travel in both directions without turning around. The stamps were used on letters (and parcels) May 3, 1914 through May 31, 1915 when a government mailbox was placed on the island; after that time the stamps could only be used for parcels. Used examples are rare. The stamps are all similar design, lithographed, perforated 11.5, and were printed in different sheet sizes for different issues. Imperforates or proofs exist of some (rare). Of all the Finnish shipping company stamps, the Drumsö stamps are certainly the most artistic and colorful. Perhaps because of the proximity to philatelic life in Helsinki, the Drumsö stamps are more available than most of the Finnish shipping company stamps, but can still be quite hard to find. The handbook by Connell states that this stamp was printed in sheets of ten (2x5), but based on my observations, either the sheet size was larger or there was more than on version of the lithograph plate (stone). Printing this 4-color stamp would have been a very complex process. SINGLE STAMP, NEVER HINGED with F-VF centering. Very fresh.

DRUMSÖ Shipping Company Stamp: Lape #30 [1915 (?) 25 penni red/vermilion] This ferry service, founded by businessman Julius Tallberg, served the island of Drumsö (now within greater Helsinki), from 1914 to 1936, with a purpose-built steam ferry also named Drumsö and pictured on the stamps. The ferry could travel in both directions without turning around. Perhaps because of the proximity to philatelic life in Helsinki, the Drumsö stamps are more available than most of the Finnish shipping company stamps, but can still be quite hard to find. The handbook by Connell states that this stamp was printed in sheets of four (2x2) with the rows tete-beche relative to each other (JSA: the two rows are always head-to-head). Based on my observation that all the sheets of this stamp that I have examined have identical plate varieties in the diagonally opposite stamps, these likely were printed with two strikes of a two-subject plate using a technique called "run and turn", thus creating the tete-beche result. Connell also stated that "It is clear that the 25 penni had several printings... [which can be] subdivided into ... smooth ... [vs] ... vertical streaking. Within the smooth (glassy) gum, I have recorded yellowish vs white paper and more and less intense color (which may or may not be a different printing). LOWER RIGHT CORNER, YELLOWISH PAPER, INTENSE COLOR, GLASSY GUM, SINGLE STAMP, NEVER HINGED with XF centering. Very fresh.

DRUMSÖ Shipping Company Stamp: Lape #33 [1920 (?) 5 mark gray] This ferry service, founded by businessman Julius Tallberg, served the island of Drumsö (now within greater Helsinki), from 1914 to 1936, with a purpose-built steam ferry also named Drumsö and pictured on the stamps. The ferry could travel in both directions without turning around. The handbook by Connell states that this stamp was printed in sheets of 25 (5x5). All examples of this stamp that I have observed are perforated all four sides; sheet margins present top and bottom (and probably on sides, but not observed). The Lape 2012 catalog states that these stamps are violet, but the Connell handbook states that they exist in Dull Gray and Dull Brownish Gray. I have never seen a violet example. Based on other situations in philately (such as Sweden Scott #15) that were printed in violet ink that was unstable and very quickly turned into gray, I believe that these either changed in a similar way or were originally printed in gray. Connell does not describe the paper; all the examples that I have seen are on yellowish paper. Connell does state that the gum is "streaky"; all the examples that I have seen have had vertical streaking due to how the gum was applied. As of July 2025, I have previously only seen one or two singles; I have now seen a few more examples, but I have never seen a sheet and I believe that even singles are "very scarce". YELLOWISH PAPER, DULL YELLOWISH-BROWNISH GRAY COLOR, STREAKY GUM, SINGLE STAMP, NEVER HINGED with XF centering. Very fresh.
