226a INVERTED OVERPRINT [1996 4.25 overprint on 0.25 Queen; Slania-engraved underlying stamp]. NH example with XF centering (tremendously better than usual for this major error; about as good as they get) with top margin selvage showing a sheet-margin position dot which can locate this stamp position in the sheet. Accompanied by a 2024 Jay Smith color image certificate with "lifetime guarantee". These errors were first discovered by Thorkild Jakobsen who purchased error stamps at the post office in Ilulissat, Greenland. Approximately 750 total examples exist. Scott 2024 value $1100, Facit 2022 (most recent edition) value SEK 9000. It has now been almost 30 years since the time of issue and the existing examples have been widely distributed. Because most of the stamps only had F-VF or sometimes VF centering, it is challenging to a find such a nicely centered XF example. From the Margaret Morris collection. Beautiful and fresh!

Scott #10-18 [1945 "American Issue"] Complete set with red "SPECIMEN" overprint and punch hole. These Greenlandic stamps were ordered printed during WWII by the from the American Banknote Company in New York. The printing company maintained an extensive archive of their work. As was their custom, archived stamps were overprinted SPECIMEN and received a punch hole. When the company was dissolved, the stamp archives were sold at auction ca.1987-1990 by the Christies auction firm. Three sets of sheets (of 100) of this 1945 issue with SPECIMEN overprints were discovered in the archives, but one set was badly damaged, and parts of the others were not fully broken up, leaving around 200 sets on the market. The sets were quickly widely dispersed (I personally sold around 40 sets in the 1990s at $1200 per set) and quickly became extremely difficult to obtain. These specimen overprints (maximum 300 each, but more likely around 200 individual sets) are scarcer than the inverted overprints (of which there are not more than 400 each); and never hinged examples of those inverted overprints sell for around $800-1000 PER STAMP. This particular set is NEVER HINGED and in extraordinarily nice quality. The 7 øre and 5 kr are F-VF+ centered, while all the others are VF or XF or Superb. This set has come from the Margaret Morris collection. All are wonderfully fresh. Accompanied by a Jay Smith color image certificate with "lifetime guarantee".

Greenland 1938, 1950-1960, and 1963-1968 Definitive Issues on Exhibition Pages: Three exhibit pages from the Margaret Morris (of Scotland) exhibition collection. Ms. Morris certainly had one of the finest Greenland collections in Scotland prior to it being purchased by one of our clients who obtained it to acquire some of the key items in her collection. These pages are just too attractive for me to dismount the stamps, but they are priced (discounted) as the normal stamps; nothing extra for these pages. 1938: Scott #1-5,7,9 [there is enough space at the bottom of the page that you could add the #6 and #8 1946 stamps, but they were not originally on this page; 1950-1960 Scott #28-38 plus #31a; 1963-1986 Scott 48-65. The stamps are all hinged (appears to be just once), and have centering ranging from VF to F-VF with a couple Fine. The overall appearance is outstanding. The individual selling prices total $96. ALSO INCLUDED AT NO COST are similar pages (without stamps) for the American Issue without overprints, with overprints, and with wrong-color overprints (Scott #10-18, 19-27, and 22a-27a) ... again, that final group is just free pages, not with stamps). Also included at no extra cost are eight Mylar-type exhibition page protectors "British Library System / Frank Godden Ltd." Last sold in a Danish auction in 2016, this is the first such example I have seen or heard of in 49 years. This may be a proof for the "issued" reprint, or it may be a subsequent reprint also printed by Kent, or it may be something else. I do not see any aspects of this -- other than I have not previously seen it or any mention of it in the literature, but that is not unusual for such esoteric items -- which suggest that this is not a genuine Kent item. However, at the same time, while I believe this item to be genuine, I am not able to state unequivocally, that I know it to be genuine. If I could prove that this was printed by Kent, the price would be much higher!

35 [1950 50 øre Sail-Steam Ship Gustav Holm in front of Iceberg] NH with VF centering. With "colored line in lower right part of G of GRØN" plate variety, listed by Daka as #35x (sheet position 2 in every second sheet; every source agrees). AFA #33x, older Wowern #33 pos 2. The illustration in Daka suggests that it is a straight line, but the illustration in older Wowern catalogs is more accurate, the line is somewhat curved like a C. The catalogs illustrations suggest that the line is bold, but it is always faint, just like this example. This variety is very much sought after, but is very seldom offered. This stamp is the key value of the set (even without the variety). The AFA Specialized Catalog 2016 (most recent) assigns a value of DKK 1200, probably the highest value of any Greenland regular-stamp plate variety.

Otherwise would be $150 (without consideration of the plate variety) for this centering.

Avane #36 (Tugssak) in either black or light-violet-black, only Fine strike but the "36" is quite clear. Though light, is almost perfectly centered postal savings cancel on Scott #Q8a [1930 1 kr Pakke-Porto, Perforation 11.5] with F-VF centering. Additional blue crayon line as often seen in the savings books. The stamp has Wowern-listed "Ha" PLATE VARIETY: "italicized E in PAKKE" from sheet position 7. While this Avane number is not "rare", it is a little scarcer than some others, and it is much less often seen on the 1 kr stamp! This example is the only one I have recorded having with this cancellation color.

Postal Savings "fiscal" cancellation: "(Landsfoged)en i Nordgrønla(nd)" crown and straight-line in violet (Wowern "purple") VF strike on Scott #Q6 [20 øre Pakke-Porto, Perforation 11.5] Used with XF centering, with a full additional blue crayon "X" cancellation. Single strike of this large postmark, excellent to the extent that it can fit on a single stamp. Listed by Wowern in GF1 1988 on page 60. While not a numbered "Avane" cancellation, this served the same purpose and was mostly only used for the savings system. Wowern noted that the additional blue lines are typical with this cancellation. The Wowern 1988 value for this cancellation is 300, double the value of the most common Avane numeral cancellations. This cancellation is not often seen, and when it is seen, it is usually only a partial strike such as this one. An very nice example!

DAKA GF5 1999 states that these imperforate reprints appeared in 1995-96, but my database shows that I first obtained some in early 1993 (and they could have been available for some time before that). I recall that, at the time, Eric von Wowern indicated to me that they had been produced with supervision and knowledge of the Royal Greenland Trade Department (KGH) and for their benefit and/or charity fundraising. Other than what I purchased at the time, I have seen only a few sets of pairs, one set of 20-blocks (which quickly sold), and one set of sheets (which also quickly sold). They do not seem to have been distributed in large quantity or very widely. In my experience they are scarce. With VF full margins and in pristine condition!

Complete set, all with various parts of the "GRØLANDS POSTKONTOR / KØBENHAVN K" cancellation used at the Greenland office in København. This was a legitimate post office; while the cancel is often philatelically applied, one could mail letters and packages from Denmark to Greenland at this office and they would receive this postmark. Most of the canceled examples of this issue on the market bear cancellations from this office which were used all through the period of normal use. Q6 [1915 20 øre Pakke-Porto, Perforation 11.25; probably Print VI] Used VF+ with VF+ strike of 2-line "Udstedet / Kaerssut" village cancellation in black (Wowern 1981 GF1 #63.01) -- a scarcer postmark. The stamp has Wowern plate variety "Fe", flattened top frame line at left corner. Wonderful centering and very neat cancellation, but one minor blunted perforation tooth at left. Such nice strikes of village cancellations are scarce!

1939 Large-Numeral Postal Savings Stamp: 1 Krone Orange with VF and complete 2-line, violet "Handelstedet / Kutdligssat" village postal cancellation. Unique Greenland Collection 1938-1988 in Fifty Years Book: Using the Danish-language edition of the Greenland Post book "Greenland Seen Through 50 Years of Stamps 1938-1988", the previous collector created a unique collection by mounting the stamps in neat black mounts in the spaces / on the pictures in the book where intended. Though the text of the book is in Danish, there are pictures on almost every page and it is quite clear how the stamp(s) on that page relate to the book content. The book appears to be complete (have spaces for) the 50-year period; EVERY SPACE IS FILLED, except for the costly overprinted Scott #19-27. The stamps are either Mint (mostly NH) or Used. The scarce Scott #10-18 set is present Used VF, with genuine, typical postmarks of the Greenlandic postal office in København -- this set alone sells for $387. (Though I do not have a copy of the English-language edition to offer at this moment, one could eventually easily transfer the stamps to the English version if desired.) This very interesting approach really puts the stamps in their historical and cultural context. This is the only such collection / use of this book that I have seen -- very creative! The total individual retail value is over $750 and probably at least $850! Shipping cost is additional for this item.
