Scott #Q4 Plate Variety, Facit #P13, AFA#15, Daka #17, Wowern #40 Ld [1937 Schultz Printing 10 øre Pakke-Porto, Perforation 10.75] Mint, lightly hinged, with VF-XF centering. This 10 øre stamp (Scott #Q4) -- and its plate varieties -- are interesting because it is the only one of the four 1937 Schultz printing stamps (and the only Pakke-Porto stamp except for the revised design of Scott #Q10-11), for which new cliches (individual printing dies) were created, "based on a new drawing" [per Wowern]. All the other Pakke-Porto stamps used the originally-made dies (and thus have the same original plate varieties) that had been in use since each denomination was first printed. The Wowern GF1 catalog illustrates the different plate varieties that are known for this stamp vs the earlier 10 øre printings. This example is from sheet position 21 and has Wowern Plate variety Ld "small blue spot at left-base of right-most wave". Only 1000 sheets (25,000 stamps total) originally existed from this printing and of those only 1000 examples originally existed with this variety. Certainly far fewer still exist today! A handsome example.

Scott #Q1a, Facit #P1, AFA #1, Daka #1, Wowern #1 [1905 1 øre Pakke-Porto Perforation 12.25] Used with XF centering, but with some blunted perforation tips. The cancellation on this stamp is one that I do not recognize and that I cannot find in the literature; it may or may not be genuinely applied. It has the appearance of being circular or a mostly-circular oval shape, potentially with some features in reverse (white on black). It recalls the appearance of "government office handstamps" and/or wax letter seal stamps. Such a cancellation is theoretically possible; if it is genuine it would be very rare. I cannot render an opinion on the genuineness of the cancellation. Regardless, the overall appearance is nice and the price is very low for this scarce stamp! Scott 2025 value is $890 Used and $660 Mint; Facit 2024 value is SEK 9000 Used and SEK 6000 Mint. As a starting point, I have priced the stamp based on the lower of those values, adjusted for the quality of the perforations, etc.

Scott #Q1a, Facit #P1, AFA #1, Daka #1, Wowern #1 [1905 1 øre Pakke-Porto Perforation 12.25] Used with Superb centering, but with a couple shorter perforations and a thin spot at lower left. The cancellation is a wonderful, PERFECTLY CENTERED, violet, crown over 3 lines, "STYRELESEN / AF / KOLONIERE I GRØNLAN(D)" strike ("The Administration for the Colonies in Greenland"). It appears that the violet postmark ink ran slightly when the stamp was soaked, but the overall appearance is wonderful. The price is very low for this scarce stamp! Scott 2025 value is $890; Facit 2024 value is SEK 9000 Used! If not for the thin spot, etc., this example, with such a perfectly centered and 99% complete cancellation would sell for more than full catalog value.

Scott #Q3a Plate Variety, Facit #P2IIBv, AFA#2A1, Daka-Wowern #4b Cb [5 øre Pakke-Porto, Perforation 12.25, Printing II, 1910 Light Red Brown] Used with F-VF centering and three types of cancellations: 1) Blue crayon parcel marking; 2) "Crossed swords" strike of the violet, crown over 1 line, mixed-case "Administrationen for Kolonierne I Grønla(nd)" ("Administration for the Colonies in Greenland"); 3) Violet-blue single-line "Kolonien Egedes(minde); it is hard to read, but that colony name is the only possibility. This last cancellation is most interesting because a) the color transitions from violet to blue (different colors had accidentally been put on the stamp pad); b) it looks like it has a underline or frameline below it (or is the frame of the device); c) the text is with-serif (!!!) and not italic; d) if there is a crown above the text that belongs to this postmark, it is not visible; and e) the Wowern GF1 (1988; last edition) potentially listed but did not illustrate (which meant it was very rare) such a cancel but stated that it was in black and that it had a crown above it. This is only the second or third time in 51 years that I have found an example of a cancellation which I was positive was genuine, but which Wowern either did not know about or did not illustrate (because he did not have one to illustrate). In addition to the rarity of the cancellation, the significance of this Egedesminde cancellation is that this confirms scarce Greenlandic village use to Denmark (rather than for a package sent from Denmark to Greenland)! This stamp is from the 1910 second printing of the Perf 12.25 5 øre, which was in light red-brown, and which had imperforate sheet margins -- thus natural straight edges. This example, from position 24 on the bottom row of the sheet and "bears" the well-known and sought after "bear heading ball" (i.e. a soccer / football term) major plate variety (Wowern variety Cb). Only 375 sheets of this printing (with the imperforate margins and not officially reperforated) originally existed, thus only 375 examples of this stamp with the "bear heading ball" variety originally existed! Surely rather few examples remain extant today and many of those are not in very good quality. This example is very nice! The Facit 2024 value for the variety stamp (ignoring any additional value of the rare cancellation) is SEK 7000!

Scott #Q4c Plate Variety, Facit #P3Iv, AFA#3, Daka-Wowern #3 Dg [10 øre Pakke-Porto, Perforation 12.25, Printing I, 1905 Dark Ultramarine-Blue, Very Thick Yellowish Paper] Mint, original gum somewhat disturbed, with VF centering, but tear at bottom center. This stamp is from the 1905 first printing of the Perf 12.25 10 øre, which was in a distinctive dark ultramarine-blue on very thick yellowish paper. This example, is from either position 19 or 21 of the sheet (Wowern was accidentally not clear which) and shows BOTH the "center of top frame line curved upward" AND "drop in left-most wave" varieties. Both of these varieties also exist independently in two other positions, but in this one position they are both present (Wowern variety Dg). Only 400 sheets (10,000 stamps total) originally existed (and today far fewer still exist), thus only 400 examples of this rare variety originally existed -- certainly far fewer still exist today! It seems that the majority of the extant examples (both of normal stamps and this rare variety) have small quality problems, thus the quality of this example is somewhat typical. The Facit 2024 value is SEK 8500. This is a fairly nice looking example of a very scarce stamp, at a very low price. The Scott Classic 2025 Catalogue now lists this 1905 printing as #Q4c!

By deduction (it is a bottom sheet margin example with a natural straight edge and does not have the plate varieties that occur in the other two positions that could have this margin) this example is from position 23 of the sheet. Only 500 sheets (12,500 stamps total) originally existed from this printing and of those only 1500 examples originally existed with this bottom margin straight edge -- certainly far fewer still exist today! It seems that the majority of the extant examples have small quality problems, thus the quality of this example is unusual and outstanding! This stamp is from the 1910 second printing of the Perf 12.25 10 øre, which was in a lighter, more greenish blue color and is on whiter paper. This example is from position of the sheet with upper left straight edge sheet margins. Only 500 sheets (12,500 stamps total) originally existed from this printing and of those only 500 examples originally existed with this upper left corner margin straight edge -- certainly far fewer still exist today! It seems that the majority of the extant examples have small quality problems, thus the quality of this example is not unusual. Usual violet "crossed swords" crown-over-straight-line "Administrationen for Kolonierne I Grønland" ("The Administration of the Colonies in Greenland") cancellation. The Facit 2024 value is SEK 6000 for the normal corner-position stamp. This is a wonderful example of a scarce stamp.

This stamp is from the 1905 first printing of the Perf 12.25 10 øre, which was in a distinctive dark ultramarine-blue on very thick yellowish paper. Only 400 sheets (10,000 stamps total) originally existed (and today far fewer still exist). The majority of the extant examples (both of normal stamps and this rare variety) have small quality problems, thus the quality of this example is exceptionally nice without any defects! The Facit 2024 value is SEK 5500. This is wonderful example of a scarce stamp in exceptional quality. The Scott Classic 2025 Catalogue now lists this 1905 printing as #Q4c!

226a INVERTED OVERPRINT [1996 4.25 overprint on 0.25 Queen; Slania-engraved underlying stamp]. NH example with XF centering (tremendously better than usual for this major error; about as good as they get) with top margin selvage showing a sheet-margin position dot which can locate this stamp position in the sheet. Accompanied by a 2024 Jay Smith color image certificate with "lifetime guarantee". These errors were first discovered by Thorkild Jakobsen who purchased error stamps at the post office in Ilulissat, Greenland. Approximately 750 total examples exist. Scott 2024 value $1100, Facit 2022 (most recent edition) value SEK 9000. It has now been almost 30 years since the time of issue and the existing examples have been widely distributed. Because most of the stamps only had F-VF or sometimes VF centering, it is challenging to a find such a nicely centered XF example. From the Margaret Morris collection. Beautiful and fresh!

Greenland 1938, 1950-1960, and 1963-1968 Definitive Issues on Exhibition Pages: Three exhibit pages from the Margaret Morris (of Scotland) exhibition collection. Ms. Morris certainly had one of the finest Greenland collections in Scotland prior to it being purchased by one of our clients who obtained it to acquire some of the key items in her collection. These pages are just too attractive for me to dismount the stamps, but they are priced (discounted) as the normal stamps; nothing extra for these pages. 1938: Scott #1-5,7,9 [there is enough space at the bottom of the page that you could add the #6 and #8 1946 stamps, but they were not originally on this page; 1950-1960 Scott #28-38 plus #31a; 1963-1986 Scott 48-65. The stamps are all hinged (appears to be just once), and have centering ranging from VF to F-VF with a couple Fine. The overall appearance is outstanding. The individual selling prices total $96. With "colored line in lower right part of G of GRØN" plate variety, listed by Daka as #35x (sheet position 2 in every second sheet; every source agrees). AFA #33x, older Wowern #33 pos 2. The illustration in Daka suggests that it is a straight line, but the illustration in older Wowern catalogs is more accurate, the line is somewhat curved like a C. The catalogs illustrations suggest that the line is bold, but it is always faint, just like this example. This variety is very much sought after, but is very seldom offered. This stamp is the key value of the set (even without the variety). The AFA Specialized Catalog 2016 (most recent) assigns a value of DKK 1200, probably the highest value of any Greenland regular-stamp plate variety.

Though light, is almost perfectly centered postal savings cancel on Scott #Q8a [1930 1 kr Pakke-Porto, Perforation 11.5] with F-VF centering. Additional blue crayon line as often seen in the savings books. The stamp has Wowern-listed "Ha" PLATE VARIETY: "italicized E in PAKKE" from sheet position 7. While this Avane number is not "rare", it is a little scarcer than some others, and it is much less often seen on the 1 kr stamp! 10-18 [1945 "American Issue" without overprint] Used with VF to F-VF centering. Complete set, all with various parts of the "GRØLANDS POSTKONTOR / KØBENHAVN K" cancellation used at the Greenland office in København. This was a legitimate post office; while the cancel is often philatelically applied, one could mail letters and packages from Denmark to Greenland at this office and they would receive this postmark. Most of the canceled examples of this issue on the market bear cancellations from this office which were used all through the period of normal use. Used F-VF sets are normally $315 and Used VF normally $387.

Q1, Facit #P4IC2 [1915 1 øre, Perforation 11.5, OFFICIALLY REPERFORATED in 1918] Used VF but with moderate thin and tiny corner crease. Officially reperforated at right -- this printing was first made with imperforate sheet margins; 225 sheets had those margins officially reperforated to make them look more like other stamps. Only 675 of each side originally existed -- probably fewer than 300 of this right position remain today. Wonderful quality rarely seen on these officially reperforated issues. This is about as nice looking as these officially reperforated issues get, but at a very low price. Otherwise would be $200.

Unique Greenland Collection 1938-1988 in Fifty Years Book: Using the Danish-language edition of the Greenland Post book "Greenland Seen Through 50 Years of Stamps 1938-1988", the previous collector created a unique collection by mounting the stamps in neat black mounts in the spaces / on the pictures in the book where intended. Though the text of the book is in Danish, there are pictures on almost every page and it is quite clear how the stamp(s) on that page relate to the book content. The book appears to be complete (have spaces for) the 50-year period; EVERY SPACE IS FILLED, except for the costly overprinted Scott #19-27. The stamps are either Mint (mostly NH) or Used. The scarce Scott #10-18 set is present Used VF, with genuine, typical postmarks of the Greenlandic postal office in København -- this set alone sells for $387. (Though I do not have a copy of the English-language edition to offer at this moment, one could eventually easily transfer the stamps to the English version if desired.) This very interesting approach really puts the stamps in their historical and cultural context. This is the only such collection / use of this book that I have seen -- very creative! The total individual retail value is over $750 and probably at least $850! Shipping cost is additional for this item.
