Avane #28 (Satut) violet, VF centered postal savings cancel on VF centered Scott #Q6, also with typical savings-redeeming blue cancellation line. Some perforations on the left side are creased or missing, probably from being placed too close to the fold at the center of the savings book. There is some extra violet color around the cancellation which typically occurs when a savings book got damp and color from a cancellation on the facing page transferred. Without the problems, this cancellation would sell for $36.

Avane #9 (Akugdlit) violet, XF centered, well-struck postal savings cancel on VF centered Scott #Q6. The stamp is an earlier printing, indicated by the muted red color shade, with very thin paper, and slightly smaller margins. A wonderful example with remarkably nice quality in all respects.

Avane #31 (Nugatsiak) violet, Superb, well-struck and a little angled and off to one side, postal savings cancellation on Scott #Q8a [1930 1 kr Pakke-Porto, Perforation 11.5] with VF centering. While this Avane number is not "rare", it is much less often seen on the 1 kr stamp, and certainly seldom seen as such an attractive example.

Avane #36 (Tugssak) violet, Superbly centered strike, postal savings cancellation on Scott #Q8a [1930 1 kr Pakke-Porto, Perforation 11.5] with F-VF++ centering. With additional blue crayon line as often seen in the savings books; the line was often applied when the book was redeemed. The stamp has Wowern-listed "He" PLATE VARIETY: "white dot between tip of left-center gull and upper left of crown" from sheet position 18. However, the white dot is somewhat covered by the blue line. While this Avane number is not "rare", it is a little scarcer than some others, and it is much less often seen on the 1 kr stamp! This example is only the third example (and only the second example on a 1 kr stamp) of the #36 cancellation that I have recorded having since I started recording these around 2000 -- and it is by far the best struck and best centered example.

Avane #13 (Rhodebay) violet postal savings cancellations, VF to Superbly struck and centered, and with some additional diagonal strikes (perhaps instead of crayon lines for the purpose of canceling the redeemed savings book??). BLOCK OF FOUR of Scott #Q6 [Perf 11.5] with Superb centering and strong perforations. The upper left stamp has Wowern-listed "Fh" PLATE VARIETY: "white line below left side of left-center gull". Also, BOTH lower stamps in the block appear to have (it is always faint) the Wowern-listed "Ff" PLATE VARIETY: "dent in top of center of upper frame line". The juxtaposition of these varieties only occurs in the 1926 (i.e. third) printing, which would place this block in sheet positions 8-9/13-14. Such high-quality blocks of Avane-canceled stamps are very hard to find (because the layout of the savings book pages encouraged placement as single stamps). This is the only Avane-canceled 4-block that I have recording having since around 2000 and I do not recall having more than two or three others before that (going back to 1973).

[5 øre Pakke-Porto, 1918 Printing I, Light Red Brown, Medium to Thick Paper, Perforation 11.5] Mint, original gum, hinge remnant, with F-VF centering, but with toned spot on reverse (only visible from the reverse). One blunted perforation tooth, but otherwise excellent perforations. Mint examples of the 5 øre stamp, regardless of printing, are scarce, especially this thick paper printing. Scott #Q9, Facit #P12a, Wowern 35a, Daka 14A [1930 3 kroner Pakke-Porto, Thinner Paper] Mint, moderately hinged, with VF centering. This example has an obvious (under modest magnification) plate variety characteristic that is not documented by Wowern, but perhaps should have been: A near-vertical white plate-scratch-line in the right side of the background from the bottom of the right-side gulls down to the right-most wave tip. [If you can confirm the plate position, I welcome that information.] Since this plate variety is not catalog-listed, it does not increase the price, but it is much more interesting. Wonderful color, perfect perforations, and excellent centering.

Scott #Q1a, Facit #P1, AFA #1, Daka #1, Wowern #1 [1905 1 øre Pakke-Porto, Perforation 12.25] Used with F-VF+ centering. The cancellations are two typical substantially complete "crossed swords" strikes of the violet, crown over 1 line, mixed-case "Administrationen for Kolonierne I Grønlan(d)" strike ("Administration for the Colonies in Greenland"). Accompanied by a Lasse Nielsen color certificate. Scott 2026 value is $890; Facit 2024 value is SEK 9000 Used! It would be reasonable to say that this is the true "Greenland Number One"!

Scott #Q1a, Facit #P1, AFA #1, Daka #1, Wowern #1 [1905 1 øre Pakke-Porto, Perforation 12.25] Used with Superb centering and enormous margins, but the upper perforations are very slightly blunted. The cancellations are a VERY UNUSUAL substantially complete (as complete as possible on a single stamp) "crossed swords" strikes of the BLACK, NO-crown over 1 line, mixed-case "(Styrel)sen af Kolonierne i Grønlan(d)" strike ("The Administration for the Colonies in Greenland"). This cancellation is Wowern "#13.01a Black". Wowern normally assigned different catalog numbers for different colors (this also exists in violet), but in this case he did not follow his normal protocol. This cancellation has a premium value per Wowern and is remarkably seldom seen on Pakke-Porto stamps. However, because of the overwhelming value of the stamp itself, the cancellation does not actually add to the price. Scott 2026 value is $890; Facit 2024 value is SEK 9000 Used! If not for the slightly blunted perforations, this example would be at least $950! It would be reasonable to say that this is the true "Greenland Number One"!

Scott #Q4a Plate Variety, Facit #P3IIB, AFA#3A1, Daka-Wowern #5b Df [1910 10 øre Pakke-Porto, Perforation 12.25, Printing II, Blue, Medium-Thick White Paper] Starting in the 2025 edition, Scott extended the listing for #Q4a (1910 blue on medium-thick white paper) by adding #Q4c (1905 dark blue on thick yellowish paper). This is indeed Scott 2026 #Q4a, the 1910 printing, not the recently Scott listed #Q4c 1905 printing. Used with Superb centering and enormous margins, but very faint hint of 2 thin specks (only visible under 10x magnification) and a very faint crease in the top margin. This stamp is from the 1910 second printing of the Perf 12.25 10 øre, which was in a lighter, more greenish blue color and is on whiter paper. This example is from sheet position 22, bottom sheet margin example with a natural straight edge, and has Wowern Plate variety Df "gentle upward bend in center of top frame line, and without the drop in wave variety". The irregularly aligned top row of perforation holes is normal and correct for this plate position. Only 500 sheets (12,500 stamps total) originally existed from this printing and of those only 1500 examples originally existed with this bottom margin straight edge -- certainly far fewer still exist today! Furthermore, only 500 examples originally existed of this plate variety! The cancellation is an attractive violet "crossed swords" crown over 1 line cancellation, "(STYR)ELESEN / AF / KOLONIERE I GRØ(NLAND)", ("The Administration for the Colonies in Greenland"). It seems that the majority of the extant examples have small quality problems, thus the quality of this example is somewhat typical -- though this example is much better centered than usually seen! The Facit 2024 value is SEK 5000, and the Scott 2026 value is $575, for a normal example (without plate variety). This is a very nice looking example of a scarce stamp, at a very reasonable price.

This is indeed Scott 2026 #Q3a, the 1910 printing, not the recently Scott listed #Q3b 1905 printing. Used with VF centering on a small piece of parcel card (correct printing on the backside, etc.), but with right-side perforations clipped near bottom. This example is from sheet position 7, and thus has Wowern Plate variety Cd "small cut in right frame line near bottom." The Wowern "Cd" variety position description should also include the information "shallow, wide cut in left side of background above left-most wave"; and "curly white cut in bottom of left-most wave". The cancellations are nearly complete (in combination almost the entire text is present) "crossed swords" strikes of the violet, crown over 1 line, mixed-case "(Ad)minisrationen for Kolonierne I Grønland." ("Administration for the Colonies in Greenland"). Only 400 sheets (10,000 stamps total) originally existed from this printing and of those only 3600 examples originally existed perforated on all four sides -- certainly far fewer still exist today! Furthermore, only 400 examples originally existed of this plate variety! Scott #Q1b, Facit #P4IB, AFA #4AI, Daka #6IB, Wowern #6b [1915 1 øre Pakke-Porto, Perforation 11.5 Printing I] Top sheet margin imperforate (straight edge) example from sheet positions 2-4 (no distinctive plate varieties recorded). Used with F-VF centering, but with a thin. The cancellations are nearly complete (in combination almost the entire text is present) "crossed swords" strikes of the violet, crown (on one strike) over 1 line, upper-case "STYRELSEN AF KOLONIERNE I GRØNLAND" ("Administration for the Colonies in Greenland"). This cancellation seems to be unusual -- and potentially scarce (??) -- in that: a) Wowern GF1 does not list a cancellation with this text all in one line, all in upper case, with or without a crown above; and b) The (typical) two crossed strikes appear to show one strike with the crown and one strike without the crown, which suggests that two different canceling devices were employed.I have long wondered -- because two strikes is twice the work -- why the crossed-strike cancellations in this time period were so prevalent. This example, seemingly showing that two different devices, one with crown and one without crown, might have been used, suggests the possibility (??) that the two strikes were applied by two different workers in the KGH office, either to double-check the correctness of the franking or to confirm that an accounting or record-keeping task had also taken place. Though 400 sheets if the 1915 printing were originally printed, 225 of those had their outer margins officially reperforated in 1918. Thus only 175 sheets of this printing were left with their original imperforate outer margins, which results in only 525 stamps each originally existing with one imperforate margin on any particular side -- only 525 examples of this stamp imperforate on the top could possibly exist, but certainly far fewer still exist today in any condition or quality. Facit 2024 value is SEK 1500 and Scott 2026 value $145. These values are extremely low for such a scarce stamp! Despite the thin (only detectable on the backside), this is a very attractive example. The interesting cancellation potentially makes this a quite significant example of this stamp and cancellation.

Two XF strikes of BLUE double-oval, crown over text, "GRØNLANDS STYRELSE" ("Greenland Administration") cancellation, Wowern #21.01. The stamps are from plate positions 8-9/18-19. Scott #Q5a THICK PAPER, Facit #P8II, AFA #8I, Daka #10II, Wowern #20 [15 øre reddish violet Pakke-Porto, Perf 11.5, Thick Yellowish Paper, 1923 Printing II. (The overall size of the 15 øre Printing II stamps is larger than the other printings.)] Starting in the 2025 edition, Scott extended the listing for #Q5 (1928 grayish-white thin paper) by adding #Q5a (thick paper). Scott #Q5a encompasses both the 1915 medium-thick white paper Printing I and the 1923 yellowish thick paper Printing II. This is indeed Scott 2026 #Q5a and is an example of the 1923 printing in reddish violet on thick yellowish paper with larger overall stamp size. Used with VF centering and wonderful appearance. Huge, nicely balanced margins. Neat, POLAR BEAR CANCELLATION (bear in only crown-topped shield, no outer frame or oval). Some of the literature states that this cancellation was only "properly" used in the 1905-1908 period (this stamp printing was released in 1923), and this cancellation has not (yet?) been found on later parcel cards. However this cancellation is occasionally found, such as this example, on loose later-period stamps. I cannot prove that this example was properly postally used, however, I have seen both well-struck examples which seem very likely to have been philatelically canceled at a later time and I have seen a few examples such as this one which are not well-struck and which many people might not even realize is a BEAR cancellation. I think that examples that appear to be like this one may very well have been properly used. The fact that the KGH still had the cancellation device on hand (we know that because of the philatelic cancels applied somewhat later) does allow for the possibility that the cancellation device was occasionally properly used as late as the mid-1920s. If one were to apply this cancel on a stamp specifically for a collector, I think they would make a better-looking example. While well-struck CTO examples certainly do exist, the fact we cannot yet prove properly dated later use does NOT logically completely exclude the possibility of such proper use. Very fresh and attractive. A very scarce stamp that is missing from most collections; most European-printed albums have a space for this thick-paper version. On this stamp, the price of the stamp is not currently increased by the bear cancellation (but if proper use as late as 1923 can ever be proven, this will have significantly greater value). Scott 2026 value $270 and Facit 2024 value SEK 2600, not taking the cancellation into account.

A wonderful, with fully readable text and a clearly visible bear, and "rare" strike of the violet, vertical double-oval "bear in shield" "Kolonien Sukkertoppen" (Sugar Top, now Maniitsoq) village cancellation (Wowern #24.06). This style of cancellation -- from any village -- is "rare". Furthermore, any village cancellation on the 1937 Perf 10.75 (Schultz Printing) stamps is at least "scarce" and most are "rare". The stain on the reverse and the sideways position of the cancellation suggest that this may be a genuine, non-philatelic use. While this may have been a philatelically inspired cancellation strike, it is rarely seen in any context. This stamp is from position 21 in the sheet with Wowern-listed Plate Variety Ld "small color spot on right side of right-most wave". Superb, violet, complete, crown over 2-line "KOLONIEN UPERNAVIK" (Wowern #69.10) cancellation. This is a "scarce" cancellation on any Pakke-Porto stamp, however ANY village cancellation on the 1937 Perf 10.75 (Schultz Printing) stamps is at least "scarce" and most are "rare". Though the cancellation is "perfect" in appearance, it was clearly struck before being soaked off paper and thus strongly suggests that this is a genuine use, probably from a savings book. Supporting that theory is that while Upernavik was assigned savings system (Avane) cancellation #34, as of 1988 Wowern had not been able to record an example of the Avane #34 cancellation. Perhaps the Avane #34 device had been lost or destroyed and thus this postal cancellation was used instead (but it is still quite scarce on any Pakke-Porto stamp). An attractive and important example.

Scott #Q6 "Officially Reperforated", Facit #P9IC2v, Wowern #15a [1915 20 øre Pakke-Porto, First Printing, Officially Reperforated in 1918. Dull/Light Red on Medium-Thick White Paper (this is not the "thick paper")] Used with F-VF+ centering and very neat cancellation. Wonderful color -- very distinctive for this printing -- and perfect perforations. However, there is a small, faint thin spot in the hinge area. SCARCE Plate Variety: "Snakebite" on nose of the right 2, Wowern variety #Fa and Facit #v; in this printing, this variety only occurs in position 2 in the sheet of 25 stamps. This printing was originally only of 400 sheets which were imperforate around the outer sheet margins, but 250 of those sheets were officially "reperforated" around the outside margins to make them look more "normal" -- this example is from one of those officially "reperforated" sheets, thus only 250 examples of this officially reperforated variety originally existed. The official reperforation usually left distinct straight edges on the perforation tips of the "reperforated" side(s). Because this stamp is from sheet position 2 and it does not have a straight edge at top, it has to be from one of the "reperforated" sheets. However, only a few of the top perforation teeth slightly show the straight edge of the top teeth. Sometimes enough outer sheet margin remained after the "reperforation" of the narrow imperforate sheet margin that collectors removed that excess not realizing that it should be left as is. A very attractive example of a very scarce stamp -- I doubt that more than 75-100 Used examples of this printing, with this variety, still exist today! The Facit 2024 value is SEK 1800! If not for the faint small thin, this would be $145.

Postal Savings "fiscal" cancellation: "(Landsfogeden) i Nordgrønland" crown and straight-line in violet (Wowern "purple") VF strike on Scott #Q6 [20 øre Pakke-Porto, Perforation 11.5] Used with XF centering, with a additional blue crayon horizontal line cancellation. Single strike of this large postmark, excellent to the extent that it can fit on a single stamp. Listed by Wowern in GF1 1988 on page 60. While not a numbered "Avane" cancellation, this served the same purpose and was mostly only used for the savings system. Wowern noted that additional blue lines are typical with this cancellation. The Wowern 1988 value for this cancellation is 300, double the value of the most common Avane numeral cancellations. This cancellation is not often seen, and when it is seen, it is usually only a partial strike such as this one. An very nice example!

This postal seal, which was used for sealing parcels, postal sacks, and any documents which required sealing, bears only the text "JULIANEHAAB" at top and below that an ornate crowned coat of arms with a POLAR BEAR in the center. The seal is quite thick and strong, thus has survived in SUPERB quality. The seal was originally applied to a piece of thick card stock which was later cut to shape around the seal. The piece of card stock was subsequently mounted (I do not know when or by whom) on a piece of similar-colored brownish heavy paper. Though this particular letter seal device has NOT (to my knowledge) been recorded used as a canceler, examples of a couple other seals, from other villages, used as cancelers, have been recorded (and are "extremely scarce"). In 52 years, I have never had an example of any Greenlandic postal seal that was used for sealing parcels, etc. The previous owner of this seal had placed it in his collection alongside an example of the 2 øre Pakke-Porto stamp (Scott Classic #Q2b [the printing on brownish-gray paper]) bearing an impression of the similar-design RED CANCELLATION (not a seal impression) picturing a Polar Bear, with the text "KOLONIEN JULIANEHAAB" (in RED is Wowern 1988 cancellation #01.08). The stamp has a crease, but has Superb centering. The 1988 Wowern value has a DKK 700 premium for this cancellation (plus the value of the stamp), but I do not have a record of ever (in 52 years) having an example of this cancellation. A remarkable and very attractive pair of items.

Scott #Q1a, Facit #P1, AFA #1, Daka #1, Wowern #1 [1905 1 øre Pakke-Porto Perforation 12.25] Used with Superb centering, but with a couple shorter perforations and a thin spot at lower left. The cancellation is a wonderful, PERFECTLY CENTERED, violet, crown over 3 lines, "STYRELESEN / AF / KOLONIERE I GRØNLAN(D)" strike ("The Administration for the Colonies in Greenland"). It appears that the violet postmark ink ran slightly when the stamp was soaked, but the overall appearance is wonderful. The price is very low for this scarce stamp! Scott 2025 value is $890; Facit 2024 value is SEK 9000 Used! If not for the thin spot, etc., this example, with such a perfectly centered and 99% complete cancellation would sell for more than full catalog value.

Neat "crossed swords" strike of the violet, crown over 1 line, mixed-case "Administrationen for Kolonierne I Grønland" ("Administration for the Colonies in Greenland") cancellation. Scott #Q4a, Facit #P3IIB, AFA#3A1, Daka-Wowern #5b [10 øre Pakke-Porto, Perforation 12.25, Printing II, 1910 Blue] Used with Superb centering, but faint corner crease at lower right (only visible from the reverse). This stamp is from the 1910 second printing of the Perf 12.25 10 øre, which was in a lighter, more greenish blue color and is on whiter paper. By deduction (it is a top sheet margin example with a natural straight edge and does not have the plate varieties that occur in the other two positions that could have this margin) this example is from position 2 of the sheet. Only 500 sheets (12,500 stamps total) originally existed from this printing and of those only 1500 examples originally existed with this top margin straight edge -- certainly far fewer still exist today! It seems that the majority of the extant examples have small quality problems, thus the quality of this example is somewhat typical, but this one has much better centering. The Facit 2024 value is SEK 5000. This is a wonderful looking example of a scarce stamp, at a very reasonable price.

This is from sheet position 4, top sheet margin example with a natural straight edge, and has Wowern Plate variety Da "cut in bottom frame line below E of ØRE". Only 500 sheets (12,500 stamps total) originally existed from this printing and of those only 1500 examples originally existed with this top margin straight edge -- certainly far fewer still exist today! Furthermore, only 500 examples originally existed of this plate variety! The cancellation is a wonderful, PERFECTLY CENTERED, black, crown over 3 lines, "STYRELESEN / AF / KOLONIERE I GRØNLAN(D)" strike ("The Administration for the Colonies in Greenland"). It seems that the majority of the extant examples have small quality problems, thus the quality of this example is somewhat typical. This stamp is from the 1910 second printing of the Perf 12.25 10 øre, which was in a lighter, more greenish blue color and is on whiter paper. Only 500 sheets (12,500 stamps total) originally existed from this printing and of those only 1500 examples originally existed with this bottom margin straight edge -- certainly far fewer still exist today! This stamp is from the 1910 second printing of the Perf 12.25 10 øre, which was in a lighter, more greenish blue color and is on whiter paper. This is from sheet position 24, bottom sheet margin example with a natural straight edge, and has Wowern Plate variety Dc "inward bend of right frame line at bottom AND drop in left-most wave". Only 500 sheets (12,500 stamps total) originally existed from this printing and of those only 1500 examples originally existed with this bottom margin straight edge -- certainly far fewer still exist today! This cancellation was only used on the early issues and is fairly scarce; such nice looking examples are seldom seen. This stamp is from the 1910 second printing of the Perf 12.25 10 øre, which was in a lighter, more greenish blue color and is on whiter paper. This example is from position of the sheet with upper left straight edge sheet margins. Only 500 sheets (12,500 stamps total) originally existed from this printing and of those only 500 examples originally existed with this upper left corner margin straight edge -- certainly far fewer still exist today! 226a INVERTED OVERPRINT [1996 4.25 overprint on 0.25 Queen; Slania-engraved underlying stamp]. NH example with XF centering (tremendously better than usual for this major error; about as good as they get) with top margin selvage showing a sheet-margin position dot which can locate this stamp position in the sheet. Accompanied by a 2024 Jay Smith color image certificate with "lifetime guarantee". These errors were first discovered by Thorkild Jakobsen who purchased error stamps at the post office in Ilulissat, Greenland. Approximately 750 total examples exist. Scott 2024 value $1100, Facit 2022 (most recent edition) value SEK 9000. It has now been almost 30 years since the time of issue and the existing examples have been widely distributed. Because most of the stamps only had F-VF or sometimes VF centering, it is challenging to a find such a nicely centered XF example. From the Margaret Morris collection. Beautiful and fresh!

Greenland 1938, 1950-1960, and 1963-1968 Definitive Issues on Exhibition Pages: Three exhibit pages from the Margaret Morris (of Scotland) exhibition collection. Ms. Morris certainly had one of the finest Greenland collections in Scotland prior to it being purchased by one of our clients who obtained it to acquire some of the key items in her collection. These pages are just too attractive for me to dismount the stamps, but they are priced (discounted) as the normal stamps; nothing extra for these pages. 1938: Scott #1-5,7,9 [there is enough space at the bottom of the page that you could add the #6 and #8 1946 stamps, but they were not originally on this page; 1950-1960 Scott #28-38 plus #31a; 1963-1986 Scott 48-65. The stamps are all hinged (appears to be just once), and have centering ranging from VF to F-VF with a couple Fine. The overall appearance is outstanding. The individual selling prices total $96. ALSO INCLUDED AT NO COST are similar pages (without stamps) for the American Issue without overprints, with overprints, and with wrong-color overprints (Scott #10-18, 19-27, and 22a-27a) ... again, that final group is just free pages, not with stamps). Also included at no extra cost are eight Mylar-type exhibition page protectors "British Library System / Frank Godden Ltd." (to hold pages 220 x 260 mm; overall size 221mm x 266mm) -- now available from www.dauwalders.co.uk at 57.95 Pounds per 50, plus costly shipping. Shipping cost is additional for this item.

With "colored line in lower right part of G of GRØN" plate variety, listed by Daka as #35x (sheet position 2 in every second sheet; every source agrees). AFA #33x, older Wowern #33 pos 2. The illustration in Daka suggests that it is a straight line, but the illustration in older Wowern catalogs is more accurate, the line is somewhat curved like a C. The catalogs illustrations suggest that the line is bold, but it is always faint, just like this example. This variety is very much sought after, but is very seldom offered. This stamp is the key value of the set (even without the variety). The AFA Specialized Catalog 2016 (most recent) assigns a value of DKK 1200, probably the highest value of any Greenland regular-stamp plate variety.

Thule Local Post complete set of 5 IMPERFORATE REPRINTS in compact pairs (vertical pairs of the horizontal format stamps; horizontal pairs of the vertical format stamps). Ungummed, as issued, on bright white paper. These reprints were printed by typography (as were the originals) using original cliches. The cliches had been located in the Royal Greenland Trade Department (KGH) archives while the 1979 Red Cross Thule souvenir sheets and Thule souvenir cards were being developed (both also included reprints using original cliches). DAKA GF5 1999 states that these imperforate reprints appeared in 1995-96, but my database shows that I first obtained some in early 1993 (and they could have been available for some time before that). I recall that, at the time, Eric von Wowern indicated to me that they had been produced with supervision and knowledge of the Royal Greenland Trade Department (KGH) and for their benefit and/or charity fundraising. Other than what I purchased at the time, I have seen only a few sets of pairs, one set of 20-blocks (which quickly sold), and one set of sheets (which also quickly sold). They do not seem to have been distributed in large quantity or very widely. In my experience they are scarce. With VF full margins and in pristine condition!

They do not seem to have been distributed in large quantity or very widely. In my experience they are scarce. With VF full margins and in pristine condition!

Thule Local Post complete set of 5 IMPERFORATE REPRINTS in corner margin 4-blocks (vertical stamps with lower right corners, horizontal stamps with upper left corners), with full sheet margins. Scott #Q5 THICK PAPER, Facit #P8II, AFA #8I, Daka #10II, Wowern #20 [1915 15 øre Pakke-Porto (parcel post), 1923 Thick Paper printing] Used with VF centering. Huge, balanced margins and neat, light, correct cancellation: violet crown-over-straight-line "GRØNLANDS STYR(ELSE)". Faint, press-out crease at upper left corner (not mentioned by the certificate and only visible under magnification). Very fresh and attractive. A very scarce stamp missing from most collections; most European-printed albums have a space for this thick-paper version. Accompanied by Wowern 1980 certificate stating [translated] "... used shortly after 1925" [based on the cancel] ... "stamp and cancellation are genuine". Otherwise would be $320!

10-18 [1945 "American Issue" without overprint] Used with VF to F-VF centering. Complete set, all with various parts of the "GRØLANDS POSTKONTOR / KØBENHAVN K" cancellation used at the Greenland office in København. This was a legitimate post office; while the cancel is often philatelically applied, one could mail letters and packages from Denmark to Greenland at this office and they would receive this postmark. Most of the canceled examples of this issue on the market bear cancellations from this office which were used all through the period of normal use. Used F-VF sets are normally $315 and Used VF normally $387.

The stamp has Wowern plate variety "Fe", flattened top frame line at left corner. Wonderful centering and very neat cancellation, but one minor blunted perforation tooth at left. Unique Greenland Collection 1938-1988 in Fifty Years Book: Using the Danish-language edition of the Greenland Post book "Greenland Seen Through 50 Years of Stamps 1938-1988", the previous collector created a unique collection by mounting the stamps in neat black mounts in the spaces / on the pictures in the book where intended. Though the text of the book is in Danish, there are pictures on almost every page and it is quite clear how the stamp(s) on that page relate to the book content. The book appears to be complete (have spaces for) the 50-year period; EVERY SPACE IS FILLED, except for the costly overprinted Scott #19-27. The stamps are either Mint (mostly NH) or Used. The scarce Scott #10-18 set is present Used VF, with genuine, typical postmarks of the Greenlandic postal office in København -- this set alone sells for $387. (Though I do not have a copy of the English-language edition to offer at this moment, one could eventually easily transfer the stamps to the English version if desired.) This very interesting approach really puts the stamps in their historical and cultural context. This is the only such collection / use of this book that I have seen -- very creative! The total individual retail value is over $750 and probably at least $850! Shipping cost is additional for this item.
