1945-1955 Special Fee Stamp created using a special cancellation on postage stamp Scott #2 [5 øre King]. Only this postage stamp was used for this purpose, with a straight-line cancellation or an oval cancellation. Of straight-line cancellations, I have only recorded "GODTHAAB", though perhaps other towns exist. An extremely nice example, Stamp Type I, F-VF+ centered stamp, with nearly complete "GODTHAA(B)" well-placed on the stamp. Examples of this "special stamp" are seldom offered. Because the stamps were applied to payment transfer forms (similar to postal money orders), when the forms were redeemed for cash, the forms, with the stamps attached, were normally retained by the post office as their receipt for the completed transaction... thus examples of these specially canceled stamps are quite scarce.

Scott #10-18 [1945 "American Issue"] Complete set with red "SPECIMEN" overprint and punch hole. These Greenlandic stamps were ordered printed during WWII by the from the American Banknote Company in New York. The printing company maintained an extensive archive of their work. As was their custom, archived stamps were overprinted SPECIMEN and received a punch hole. When the company was dissolved, the stamp archives were sold at auction ca.1987-1990 by the Christies auction firm. Three sets of sheets (of 100) of this 1945 issue with SPECIMEN overprints were discovered in the archives, but one set was badly damaged, and parts of the others were not fully broken up, leaving around 200 sets on the market. The sets were quickly widely dispersed (I personally sold around 40 sets in the 1990s at $1200 per set) and quickly became extremely difficult to obtain. These specimen overprints (maximum 300 each, but more likely around 200 individual sets) are scarcer than the inverted overprints (of which there are not more than 400 each); and never hinged examples of those inverted overprints sell for around $800-1000 PER STAMP. This particular set is NEVER HINGED and in extraordinarily nice quality. The 7 øre and 5 kr are F-VF+ centered, while all the others are VF or XF or Superb. This set has come from the Margaret Morris collection. All are wonderfully fresh. Accompanied by a Jay Smith color image certificate with "lifetime guarantee".

Wonderfully fresh appearance. For some reason the 15 øre is particularly scarce with nice centering! The break-up value of this block is $177 (3 x $54 and 1x $15). Blocks are scarce!

35 [1950 50 øre Sail-Steam Ship Gustav Holm in front of Iceberg] NH with VF centering. With "colored line in lower right part of G of GRØN" plate variety, listed by Daka as #35x (sheet position 2 in every second sheet; every source agrees). AFA #33x, older Wowern #33 pos 2. The illustration in Daka suggests that it is a straight line, but the illustration in older Wowern catalogs is more accurate, the line is somewhat curved like a C. The catalogs illustrations suggest that the line is bold, but it is always faint, just like this example. This variety is very much sought after, but is very seldom offered. This stamp is the key value of the set (even without the variety). The AFA Specialized Catalog 2016 (most recent) assigns a value of DKK 1200, probably the highest value of any Greenland regular-stamp plate variety.

With "re-entry / doubling of bottom frame line at right, and D area -- and colored spot in top margin above I of LIG" plate variety, listed by Daka as #37x. (sheet position 3; in every second sheet according to Wowern and AFA but Daka does not specify). AFA #35, older Wowern #35 pos 3. This variety, caused by an error when making the plate -- not a scratch on the plate -- is rarely offered.
