Iceland: First Day Covers: Early Issues
The website Icelandic FDC listings focus on Early FDCs and on Officially Cacheted FDCs starting with the Republic in 1944, up through around 2015. However, that is only a small part of my Iceland FDC stock and, even in those categories, I have not had time to list everything. I have a strong stock of Icelandic FDCs from the 1930s up through around 2015, including... a) Both official and private cachets (as well as uncacheted covers to which you can apply your own cachet if you wish). b) Sets as sets on single cover, Sets as singles on multiple covers, 4-blocks, etc. c) Different types (postmark size, typestyle of text, typestyle of date) of the Official FD Cancellations exist at least up into the 1960s, but, to my knowledge, which different postmark types or their relative scarcity have never been cataloged; I often have multiple versions available. d) Non-Official FD town cancellations on FDCs. There is never enough time to put everything on the website, so please let me know what you are seeking. All are available on approval. Scott Catalogue numbers have been used. All FDCs are VF unless otherwise stated. The prices for Unaddressed vs Addressed FDCs are in different price columns; see the price column headers.

Scott #199-201 [1937 Christian X 25th Anniversary] (VF, with some slight gum soak on perforation tips) Complete set on attractive FDC, with neat typed address, to Wein (Vienna) Austria, with REYKJAVIK 14 V 37 (14 May 1937) cancellations. No markings on reverse of cover. The gum soak on some perforation tips is fairly typical with on-cover stamps of this issue due to the porous stamp paper. As nice an example of this scarce FDC as I have ever had. Based on my recording (which started in 2000) of what I have had of early Iceland FDCs, this is one of only two examples I have had since 2000; I had perhaps one other example from 1973-1999. Facit 2024 value SEK 3300!

Scott #203, 204, 205 [1 April 1938 15, 20, 35 aur Geysir] (VF) FDC bearing three of the four denominations issued on this day; the fourth stamp was the 50 aur, which is "virtually always" on a separate cover because its face value was high enough to pay the postage on its own. (I have never recorded even seeing a cover bearing all four stamps.) With CACHET picturing Geysir, printed in blue, with English text. This is one of the earliest Icelandic CACHETED FDCs that I have seen; other early "cachets" have only "rubberstamped" text and even then are quite unusual. The English text, the style of the writing, and the size of the envelope strongly suggest that this cacheted envelope was produced in the U.S. and sent to Iceland for making FDCs. Neat "typed" address, sent by REGISTERED MAIL, to Wein (Vienna) Austria, with REYKJAVIK 1 IV 38 (1 April 1938) cancellations. With German transit postmark and Austrian receiving postmark on reverse of cover. A wonderfully fresh example of this scarce FDC. Based on my recording (which started in 2000) of what I have had of early Iceland FDCs, this is one of only two examples I have had since 2000; I had perhaps two other examples during 1973-1999 but they may not have been cacheted. A beautiful item for either an Iceland collection or a topical collection.

Scott #209-11 [1 Dec 1938 University set/3] (VF, F-VF) FDC bearing the complete set of three stamps. I have so far (12/2025) recorded the post-office-applied boxed 2-line / 2-language handstamped cachet: with sharp text and sharp corners, in dark black (JSA#1), in violet (JSA#2), and in greenish blue (JSA#3); and with flared-out corners and worn text, in grayish black (JSA#4). I have also recorded an unboxed 3-line / 3-language cachet handstamp, in violet (JSA#5). This cover has the JSA#1 type handstamp. I have so far (12/2025) recorded the REYKJAVIK 1 December 1938 cancellations in three different styles: JSA#1) Cancel type B1d (full-bridge, date with Roman month, with time indicator), 31 mm thus larger lettering. JSA#2) Cancel type B1d (full-bridge, date with Roman month, with time indicator), 28 mm thus smaller lettering. JSA#3) Cancel type B5a ("bottom bridge", date with Arabic month, no time indicator), 27 mm. This cover has Superb strikes of the JSA#1 cancellation. Neat handwritten address, to the U.S., no markings on reverse. A wonderfully fresh example of this scarce FDC. Priced at only about the value of the Used stamps.

Scott #209-11 [1 Dec 1938 University set/3] (F-VF, but with some perf toning) FDC bearing the complete set of three stamps. This cover has NO handstamp. This cover has faint strikes of the JSA#3 cancellation. Neatly handwritten address, sent by REGISTERED MAIL to the famous cover dealer Francis J. Field, in England, with receiving postmark on reverse. A very interesting looking FDC that looks more like a non-philatelic cover than most FDCs of the period. Priced at only about the value of the Used stamps, taking the toning spots into account.

Scott #258, 259, 261, 263, 264, 266, 267, 268 [1950 Icelandic Scenes: 10, 20, 60, 90 aur and 1, 1.50, 2, and 5 kronur] (VF or better) on 12 October 1950 registered FDC to Denmark, with official FD cancellation. This is the complete 8-stamp set that was issued on that day. (More than one type of FD cancellation may have been used for this date / issue, compare with your collection.) No markings on the back of the cover; that is normal to Denmark. The Scott #261 [60 aur] denomination is XF centered and is the KEY USED STAMP OF THE SET, with a Used Scott value of $24 and if removed from the cover would sell for even more than that in XF centering. A very attractive example of this FDC, with an especially nice 60 aur stamp.
