Norway: Essays: 1938 Tourism
All items are available for viewing on approval. I have a constantly changing stock of Norwegian and all Scandinavian essays, proofs, reprints, and test stamps. Most of such items sell before they get to the website or price lists. What are you seeking?
The 1938 Tourism stamps (Scott #181-186) were the result of a design competition which also yielded some other designs that still exist in the form of essays. The German company Goebel produced two designs (girl blowing a horn overlooking valley; waterfalls). The Norwegian firm of Emil Moestue used the opportunity to showcase its new photogravure equipment with several designs, each in multiple colors: Svalbard (Spitzbergen) map; Reindeer; North Cape (Nordkap); and King Håkon.

The Svalbard / Spitzbergen Map exists in Sepia Brown and Blue. Paul Jensen once told me that the "issued" quantities (just one sheet of 50 stamps each; fewer than that may actually have reached the market) were equal, but in my experience, the Blue is rarely seen.

The Reindeer exists in Orange, Green, Sepia Brown, Blue, Violet, and Rose. Paul Jensen once told me that the "issued" quantities (just two 50-stamp sheets of each color; fewer than that may actually have reached the market) were equal, but in my experience, the Rose seen less often than the others.

King Haakon VII  Shopping Cart: Review or Check Out   Top
The 1938 King Haakon VII essay design is the least "touristy" of the 1938 Tourism essays. This design was perhaps being suggested as successor for the Haakon set of four that was issued in 1937-1938, but the war years intervened. This design is confirmed to be known perforated, however, I have also seen at least a couple imperforate examples (but I did not record the colors or retain images back then before 2000), but it is theoretically possible that modest-margined singles could have been cut out of a perforated examples. The known perforated colors are Red Brown (this color), Green, Dark Blue, and Violet. Only 50 or fewer perforated examples are believed to have reached the market; they are very seldom offered. Over the years 1973-2024, I have had not more than three each of the perforated colors (and of one or two colors I have had only one each) and not more than three total imperforate examples (of any colors).

1938 King Haakon VII essay for 1938 Tourism issue. Red Brown. Imperforate and gummed, NH VF. The least "touristy" of the 1938 Tourism essays, this design was perhaps being suggested as successor for the Haakon set of four that was issued in 1937-1938, but the war years intervened. This design is confirmed to be known perforated. However I have also seen three or less imperforate examples (but I did not record the colors) in addition to this one, but it is theoretically possible that a modest-margined single example such as this one could have been cut out of a perforated example. The known perforated colors are Red Brown (this color), Green, Dark Blue, and Violet. Only 50 or fewer perforated examples are believed to have reached the market; they are very seldom offered. The other 1938 designs sell from $165 to $250 each, but they have designs with much greater topical interest (though they are believed to exist in the same quantities).
