| Though never seen by most collectors, Norway does have perfins. (Perfins are perforated initials punched into stamps for security and control purposes, usually to prevent stamp theft by employees.) Unlike most countries, Norway had official perfins in addition to the usual private / commercial perfins. Various government departments used official perfins in the 1898-1933 period -- they are listed by the Norgeskatalogen (NK) immediately preceeding the official stamp section; minimum prices are given for each issuer and the known stamps are listed. References for the more familiar private / commercial perfins are hard to find, but philatelically inspired perfins have been cataloged in Little Library of Norwegian Philately - Volume 2 - 2005. Books are available from me. Unlike the perfins of many countries, Norwegian perfins greatly increase the value of stamps upon which they are found. Most perfin designs can theoretically exist right- and wrong-reading (viewed from the front side) and/or upright or inverted. By design or positioning, perfins can also have vertically oriented lettering in four possible positions and diagonally oriented lettering in eight possible positions.
