Sweden: Blackprints: Proof Prints: Black Prints, Color Prints, and Test Stamps

All are NH, VF and fresh as officially issued.

Since 1974, or perhaps earlier (?), Sweden has issued a surprising number of "proof prints" commonly called "black prints", "color prints", or in some cases referred to by the post office as, "test stamps".

These items are officially produced by the post office for a number of uses and generally find their way to collectors, though usually in very limited distribution. Often they are only available one-to-a-person or are included in a larger, more costly item such as a year book and thus one has to buy the entire year book just to get this special item.

In most cases, the "proof prints" from Sweden have been made using the engraved portions of issued stamps. They are usually imperforate, printed in one color (different than the issued stamp), and often do not include any denomination or country name. Many of these "proof prints" are of Slania-engraved issues.

Most items are only available in very limited numbers. If you know of items that are not included in this listing, please share the information with me. (I am also a buyer of this type of material.)

Normally philatelists consider "test stamps" to be the result of actual testing of the printing presses, inks, papers, etc., usually using a non-issued stamp-like design. These post-1987 issues that the post office, in some cases, calls "test stamps" are really more along the line of black prints or color prints which some generally refer to as "proof prints". (This page is not intended to be a listing of actual "test stamps"; that is a completely different project.)

Recently a client challenged me to make a listing of the known Swedish "proof prints". I thought that it would be easy and only take a few minutes -- was I ever wrong! There is very little proper philatelic documentation of these issues and most of them are quite difficult to obtain. Most collectors of Sweden will have never seen or heard of 75% of these items! Their cost ranges from just a few dollars to as much as $100; the more costly items are costly because they were included in year books which are themselves costly. I have a special interest in such material and over the years I have made a point of documenting them and attempting to keep them in stock.

If you collect Sweden or Slania-engraved stamps or by topic, you will surely find some items in this listing that will be of interest to you. If you see something of interest, order it quickly; when such material sells out, it sometimes takes me years to find more examples.

1978 Stamp Day: 1903 Stockholm General Post Office (Scott #66) in blue on heavy cream-colored paper, with all-over-printed grayish-blue background; all printing by offset in the form of halftone dots but very accurate image of stamp. Imperforate; overall measurement 105 x 150 mm. Backside of stamp with black "FRIMÄRKETS / DAG / 1976". Watermarked vertically (base of lettering to the right side when viewed from the front) in large outline lettering "NORMAL 1 ... UK" / "SVEN...". [I have only ever seen (or heard of) one example which I found in 2022, nor have I found any images of this item on the Internet. Other than being a production of the annual Stamp Day events, which were organized and produced by the post office, I do not have any further information about this item. 1992 Baltic Sea Birds issue (Mare Balticum). Scott #1975-8. Imperforate, engraved blackprint "souvenir sheet" of the four stamps (same as the issued souvenir sheet) with just the four birds (no text). This stamp issue was prepared by the Swedish post office as a joint issue with and in donation to the newly free Baltic countries of Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania -- the stamps of all four countries were the same except for the text and denominations. This blackprint is thus a blackprint for any of the four countries. One stamp is engraved by Slania. Difficult to obtain.

1994 Man on the Moon issue. Scott #2083. Blackprint offset printed (lithographed) on souvenir card with first day canceled stamp. (The FD postmark also pictures a soccer / fötball / football design because the Moon stamp was issued on the same FDC as a Soccer World Cup stamp.) Souvenir card with text "SVENSK TEKNIK PÅ MÅHAN" ["Swedish technology on the moon", referring to the Hasselblad camera included in the stamp design.] This card was released through the Swedish stamp agency in North America, apparently one to a subscriber. To the best of my knowledge, it was not distributed in Sweden or overseas. Thus, it is unusually scarce for such an item. Slania engraved stamp.

1995 Film issue and 1920-28 definitive designs; blackprints in 1995 book. Scott #2138-43 and #115, #116 Type II, and #168 Type II.

In 1995 the Swedish Postal Museum published an article reprint the form of a 40-page book: Postens Frimärks Trykeri Under 75 år 1920-1995 (75 Years of Post Office Stamp Printing 1920-1995). This covers the time from installation of the first Swedish rotary stamp printing press (a U.S.-made Stickney press). Only a small quantity of the books were printed and distribution seems to have been very limited -- I am a member of the Museum Friends organization and I did not even know the Film blackprint or the book contains existed until around 2000 or that the book was the source of the blackprint until 2003 and it was not until 2006 that I learned that the book also contains proofs of the 1920-28 issues. The book and the blackprint / proof items it contains are extremely scarce.

The book contains a blackprint of the engraved portion of the 1995 Film stamps (Scott #2138-43), which includes designs ENGRAVED BY SLANIA, SJÖÖBLOM, and NASZARKOWSKI.

The book also contains blackprints / proofs of three 1920-28 issues (Scott #115, 116 Type II, and #168 Type II).

The book states that both blackprint / proof items are printed from the ORIGINAL ENGRAVINGS, thus not from secondary transfers or plates. The result is prints of incredibly clarity and detail; the 1920-28 stamp designs especially are unbelievably sharp and detailed.

While the existence of the Film and 1920-28 blackprints is known to some in the Slania collecting community, though few have ever seen an example, they are virtually unknown to collectors of Sweden including collectors in Sweden. The existence of the 1920-28 items is seemingly virtually unknown to all; as of 2009 I have never seen any press reports or documentation that these 1920-28 items exist.

The book itself (Swedish text only) discusses stamp printing, including much that is relevant for collectors of engraved stamps.

2000 Slania 1000th Stamp issue. Scott #2374. For his thousandth stamp, Slania chose to engrave a stamp for Sweden that would also supposedly be the largest regular postal stamp in the world. The stamp design is the center of the David Kloker Ehrenstral ceiling painting "Great Deeds by Swedish Kings". The blackprint of this wonderful issue was only offered in a folder / pack that also contains the mint stamp (souvenir sheet) and the official first day cover. The pack bears a portrait of Slania and an image of a larger area of the ceiling painting. A very nice item! The complete pack.

Two "panes" of engraved, imperforate blackprints of only the engraved portions of the designs. The two "panes" are bound into the book, but have roulettes to aid in removing them if desired. The two coil stamp designs are engraved by Naszarkowski and the two booklet design stamps are engraved by Lars Sjööblom. The book is a beautiful production with great photographs and interesting text, all of which is fully in Swedish, German, and English. The book also includes the issued 2007 Linne stamps and is encased in a dust cover. The book sold out quickly and is virtually impossible to obtain.

2008 Gerfalcon (Gyrfalcon, Jaktfalk) 50 kr blue-print with defaced denomination, IN FOLDER. Issued in 1981, this stamp design was replaced in 2007. To celebrate the stamp and Slania, the engraver, Sweden Post issued a special folder containing a proof impression with defaced denomination, printed on a numbered "souvenir sheet" in dark blue. The folder also contains a NH VF stamp in a clear mount and specially-canceled stamp. Only 6000 were printed. The folder text is fully in Swedish, German, and English and pictures Slania, the master engraver.

2008 Gerfalcon (Gyrfalcon, Jaktfalk) 50 kr blue-print with defaced denomination, BLUE-PRINT ONLY. Issued in 1981, this stamp design was replaced in 2007. To celebrate the stamp and Slania, the engraver, Sweden Post issued a special folder containing a proof impression with defaced denomination, printed on a numbered "souvenir sheet" in dark blue. This item is only the blue-print (no folder).

2008 Ingmar Bergman officially issued book containing the issued, perforated souvenir sheet, plus THREE IMPERFORATE PROOF SHEETS: Engraved portion only; 3-color offset portion only; and the combination of the two (which is a identical to the issued item except it is missing perforations). These three imperforate items were only available in this book. Packed with wonderful photos and with text in Swedish and English; chapters discuss five important Bergman films. Engraved by Martin Mörck. Especially the imperforate complete print will become an important (and scarce) item, with ONLY 4000 ISSUED!
