Scott #E1 [1885 10c blue Messenger Running, all text straight] Right interior margin example, with straight edge at right, from the right-most column of the left pane of 50 from the printer sheet of 100. Used with Fine+ centering and a typical "blob" cancellation that leaves the right-side text fully clear. There are no defects or repairs. An attractive example with strong blue color -- without the more usual greenish tint -- with a crisp and detailed printing impression. The printer sheets of 100 (10 x 10) were vertically divided (straight edges), between columns 5 and 6, into panes of 50 (5 x 10). The top and bottom sheet margins had full perforated selvage margins, thus there are no horizontal straight edge stamps. 10 stamps of each 50-pane had a straight edge on the left or right side, thus 20 out of every 100 stamps (20%) had a straight edge. The examples and images of #E1 that I have observed do not have any guidelines, either vertical or horizontal. However, all the top and bottom stamps at the right or left straight edge position terminate at the sheet selvage with an arrow in the sheet selvage; examples with shifted centering that are showing the point of the arrow on the stamp paper are "extremely scarce". (Most straight edge stamps were used for postage rather than going into collections; and of those that remained, many have been reperforated to remove the straight edge or have been discarded.) I think that collecting the guideline and straight-edge positions is quite challenging and rewarding. The Scott U.S. Specialized Catalogue 2026 value is $80. Examples showing the straight edges are "remarkably scarce", with most that initially survived likely having been since reperforated. This is a nice example.
