Danish West Indies: Bargains: Stamps Scott #5-15
These bargain-priced stamps are attractive, but most have hidden flaws. You can save a tremendous amount of money when you add such stamps to your collection. Each stamp is one of a kind, so please let me know if I may substitute a different example (that looks as good or better, for the same cost) if the stamp you order has sold. If you have any doubts, all are available for approval viewing. If you are seeking stamps of this quality and price level from any of the Scandinavian countries, just send along your want list -- I will be happy to send bargains on approval. Scott numbers have been used unless otherwise stated.

5a, Facit #5a First Printing: Emerald Green and Violet (Purple) on Thin Paper [1873 1 cent Bicolor, Perf 14 x 13.5, Normal Frame] Mint, with full original gum (scarce), hinged, and Fine centering, but with one rounded corner perf (typical). Brilliant true colors, with the characteristic "checkerboard" pattern in the violet (under magnification) of this printing -- that make this an excellent example for a color comparison set. Scott Standard Catalogue lists only four colors/papers for this stamp though there are nine printings, thus nine colors/papers; Scott #5a comes the closest (because it is the listing for thin paper). An attractive example of a scarce stamp with great color, at a very low price.

Scott Classic #5b Print 4, Facit #5d, AFA 5.4. Light Green and Red Violet on Medium Paper [1873 (1880 printing) 1 cent Bicolor, Perf 14 x 13.5, Normal Frame] Mint F-VF, without gum. Wonderfully fresh appearance with great color and excellent perforations. Examples, with or without gum, with such nice color are hard to find. All the printings that fall under Scott Classic #5b are scarce with gum. Facit 2022 value is SEK 500 with gum.

7 [1873 (1878 printing) 4 cent Bicolor, Perf 14 x 13.5, Normal Frame] Mint, very lightly hinged, with XF centering. However, has an inclusion in the gum (in the top margin) that appears to be "natural" in the gum at the time of application. When the stamp is on a light background, from the front you can just barely see the inclusion. However, when the stamp is on a dark background, such as in a black stamp mount, the inclusion is NOT visible from the front. This example has exceptionally nice centering and perforations. Nice looking mint examples of this workhorse stamp are quite hard to find. Very low price for this wonderful appearance; this would otherwise be $38 for this quality.

9a [1874 (first printing) 7 cent Lilac and Dark Yellow Bicolor, Perf 14 x 13.5, Normal Frame] Used with typical Average centering, but one shorter perforation tooth and faint corner crease. Neat, light 5-ring-dot cancellation, and faint part of blue transit cancel (usually only seen on covers transiting the French-area mail systems). This example has strong color for this issue. This stamp normally has poor centering, but this is a nice looking example. A very inexpensive example. (Scott 2024 $130.)

9b [1874 (1878 Print 2) 7 cent Red Lilac and Orange Bicolor, INVERTED FRAME] Used with Just-Fine centering and very light, neat, proper, partial (FREDERI)KSTED cancellation. There are some slightly blunted perforation tips, but the color is very strong and the cancellation is very light. This stamp was printed on extremely thin paper, thus undamaged examples -- especially of the inverted frame positions an most especially in USED condition -- are quite hard to find. A very nice looking example at a low price. Facit 2024 value is SEK 2700!

11 [1877 (1878 Printing) 12 cent Bicolor, Red Lilac and Yellow Green, Perf 14 x 13.5] Used with Fine centering, nice looking, but with small defects (corner perforation, tiny thin spot, small "hidden" tear). A nice looking example at a very low price. Scott 2024 value is $170 and a Used Fine example without defects, with this centering, would otherwise sell for $120!

11a [1877 12 cent Bicolor, First Printing, Lilac and Deep Green, Perf 14 x 13.5] Used with F-VF centering, but rounded lower right corner perforation and heavy cancellations. 13a, Facit #13b, AFA 13 Print 2 [1879 (1885 printing) 50 cent GRAY VIOLET, thick paper, Bicolor, Perf 14 x 13.5] Mint, no gum, with XF-Superb centering. A beautiful example with perfect perforation and excellent, correct color -- just missing its gum. [Some suggest that intentionally removing the gum may help to preserve the stamp.] The Facit 2022 value is SEK 3000, but examples that look this nice are seldom seen! A very scarce stamp that is seldom offered, but when #13a is offered in the general marketplace, it is often misidentified and is really a faded example of #13. This example is a correct #13a!
