ca.1940 Essay for Overprint for the 1940 Provisional 15 øre overprint on 40 øre Engraved Caravel (ship design) stamps. Imperforate block of four (of the overprints only) on ungummed thin yellowish paper, with very large margins all around (indicating that the overprint plate for this essay was only four stamps large). The essay shows four different possible designs (all very strange in my opinion) for the lines to obscure the old denomination. Because of the nature of the provisional overprints, it is reasonable to assume that this essay was created by the post office printers and not by private individuals making a proposal. This is the only example of this essay that I can recall seeing, however I do know that this example was known to both Ray Petersen and William Benfield (both of whom were major collectors of Danish essays) and that it came from at least one of their collections; it is possible that this example serially resided in both of their collections.
