Faroe: Shipping Company Freight Stamps: Machine Imprint Uses
When such stamps had been issued in other regions in earlier eras, they were often called Ship Letter Stamps. However, these stamps were intended to pay for freight shipments between the islands, particularly agricultural goods such as milk, butter, and even animals, along with all the other types of freight and parcels needed to supply dailiy life. The stamps were apparently not sold to the public, but were applied by the shipping company to the bill of lading at the time of shipment. Despite the primary use on freight, the earlier issues are known used on envelopes; in such cases, that may have been the quickest way to get messages or business papers transmitted. During the WWII era the Faroe government took over freight operations; later all operations were consolidated under government control, thus the post-WWII issues are "government issued parcel stamps", not privately issued! As such they should start to receive much more respect than they have in the past These stamps have been listed in Wowern GF14 catalogs and they are now listed in the Daka GF10 (21st edition, 2010) Catalog, which is available from me. THE CATALOG NUMBERS HAVE CHANGED FROM CATALOG TO CATALOG; THE CURRENT NUMBERS (WHICH I HAVE USED IN THIS LISTING ARE DIFFERENT FROM PAST NUMBERING SYSTEMS. Please confirm that the numbers correlate to the stamps you actually need. These stamps rarely make it to my website or price lists and are usually only available via approvals. Please be sure to let me know of your interests; a good selection is usually available.
Starting in the mid-to-late 1970s and continuing until at least the mid-1980s, one or more machines were placed into use to imprint the shipping cost, instead of using adhesive stamps. I assume that this use was mostly at one or more major shipping company offices. Along side this, stamps were still used, probably by smaller offices and/or on the ships and at harborside. Because these uses do not look like much more than business invoices, most seem to have been discarded; while they are not costly, complete documents are quite scarce.
I am sorry, all of the items offered on this page have been sold (or the page is still in the process of being created and filled). I will be filling/refilling this page soon, but if there is something you are seeking, please email me to let me know about your interest.
