1907 Royal Visit to Seyðisfirði (Seyðisfjörður), Iceland. Lithographed (?) from a photograph, with typographed text, picturing King Frederik VIII stepping off his shore boat at Seyðisfirði, with his Royal Yacht in the background. Though the photo was taken at some distance, it is remarkably crisp. Frederik VIII ascended the throne as King of Denmark and Iceland on 29 January 1906, but his reign was short, dying 14 May 1912. [Because of his short reign, any picture post cards picturing Frederik VIII are "unusual", but such Icelandic cards are "very scarce". This was his only visit as King to Iceland.] This card was PUBLISHED IN ICELAND. This card is in pristine condition, apparently having been kept as a souvenir. In 1909 it was then used to send a message (either hand carried or as an enclosure) outside of the mail. Actually-mailed 1907 Royal Visit cards are "extremely scarce". I have had less then ten 1907 Iceland Royal Visit picture post cards in the last 50 years; I believe only two of them had been mailed. I found 2023 auction sales records for two other (each different) 1907 Royal Visit picture post cards (both also not mailed): One sold for ISK 26,000 (4/2024 $185) and the other for ISK 22,000 (4/2024 $155) -- both received many bids, but neither had the appeal of this nautical scene including the Royal Yacht. A wonderful item in perfect condition. |

Lithographed (?) from a photograph, with text by same method, picturing King Frederik VIII visiting Akureyrar, with people from "miles around" observing. Though the photo was taken at some distance, it is remarkably crisp, with many individual faces quite clear. Frederik VIII ascended the throne as King of Denmark and Iceland on 29 January 1906, but his reign was short, dying 14 May 1912. 121 [1921 25 aur red Christian X] (VF) solo use on 7 July 1922 picture postcard from REYKJAVÍK (machine cancel) to the U.S. Nice locally printed card picturing part of Reykjavík "Skólavarðan við Reykjavík", with insignificant tear at top. This stamp was issued 18 April 1921 for this worldwide (outside Scandinavia) 25 aur post card rate: 1 April 1921 - 30 September 1925 (inclusive). This stamp is quite scarce on cover/card: Facit 2022 value is SEK 1600 (about $180 3/2022). An attractive example, made even nicer by the nice locally produced postcard. |
